What was supposed to be a normal day yesterday started out with some heartbreaking news. I always try not to read the news when I start my day, but a headline caught my eye as I was logging in to check my mail: Bernama TV cameraman shot dead in Somalia. PETALING JAYA: Bernama TV cameraman ...

Saudis Tweet: Be Kind to Foreign Workers
2011-09-05 15:38:00
This is an excerpt from Arabnews, an English language daily paper from Saudi Arabia: JAZAN: A number of Saudis have launched a campaign on Twitter asking their compatriots to be kind to the foreign manpower living with them and to spread awareness in society about humanitarian treatment to foreign laborers. They also tweeted that Saudis ...

The night was young and the cool spring breeze sent a chill down my spine as I wrapped my arms around myself and exited the warmth of the mosque. Isha prayer had just finished and I thought of my evening plans as I tried to locate my sandals among the heap of shoes and slippers ...

It was a quiet summer evening in the village and it had stopped raining a few hours ago. A nice cool breeze laden with the sweet smell of forest just blew across my face. You could almost taste the smell of palm trees and the river in the distance. You could hear the relaxing sounds ...

Back in the Eastern Province
2011-04-14 18:28:00
I was hoping I would catch a little bit of winter this year, as I’ve only been visiting Saudi Arabia during summers for the last three years. I really miss winter for many reasons. I miss being able to play basketball or soccer at the beach during any time of the day. I really miss ...

Once Again?
2010-11-05 21:05:00
Once again, tectonic plates must have shifted since the last time I’ve written anything here. It’s sad to see that a few bloggers whose posts I loved reading, a great portion of them Somali bloggers, decided to call it quits and throw in the towel if you may. The Somali blogger community has simply disappeared, ...

“It’s been a while” would be the understatement of the millenium. Nearly two years; it’s a wonder I still remembered the password to my account. Anyways, I’m back in sandbox for a while. It’ll take a few days to sort this blog out and publish the drafts I’ve saved up. First things first though; I ...

That up there, ladies and gentlemen, is the first stop light upon entering my city back home; which I will pass through in the next few days Insha’Allah. That will leave me with a few days to taste the Ramadan spirit back in Saudi Arabia; the food, the evenings, the prayers, the whole atmosphere; did ...

30 Days?
2007-09-12 02:08:00
I’ve noticed a trend in some Muslims living in Western nations during Ramadan. Come the holy month, one can observe that they’re afraid to show their religion openly and some even go to lengths to hide their fasting. I’ve observed in some, and heard it from others, and this desire to hide Islam does not ...

Car of the Moment: Lamborghini Reventon
2007-09-11 13:35:00
Anyone who knows me understands that I’ve been into cars ever since I was 5. Although not my only hobby, it is by far the one I’m most passionate about. Most of my pocket money since my freshman year at high school was spent on fuel. I was and still am as much an addict ...

Glaciers must have melted since my last post. Two, nearly three month hiatus. In case you don’t have your abacus with you, that’s nearly 100 days, which is quite remarkable for me. One would be inclined, even expected to give some sort of reason or excuse for being away for so long; but let’s ...

Killer Roads

Resembles your average commute on a Saudi freeway - minus the decals A recent Arabnews article brought back certain memories. It’s been a long one since I’ve last had time to blog. It’s partly due to exam season now being in full swing. Due to that, I won’t be posting much until exams are over. Till then, I leave you with a question. Every night I sleep with a new hope for a peaceful Darfur, with the ...

Chillin?
2007-04-04 06:54:00
Just came back to Kuala Lumpur a couple of days back to meet some friends and pick up my cousin from the airport. There’s a lot going around lately, especially the various races that will take place at the Sepang Intl’ Circuit from 6-8 April, which I hopefully won’t miss. Lots of rubber, lots ...

Aston Martin Sedan?
2007-03-15 11:48:00
Alright. When Maserati ventured into the sedan category, I didn’t care much since I’m not a big Maserati fan. But now Aston Mart in has come up with the Aston Martin Rapide, a 6.0 Liter V12 sedan. Doesn’t appeal to me. I don’t know…it’s like seeing a Lamborghini pick-up or a Ferrari SUV.

After 35 Years
2007-02-23 11:23:03
“I’m done paying the bills and I’m just leaving the bank,” I told my dad. He asked me to wait while he stopped the car to talk; he has a thing about driving in Dammam while talking on the cell; and he’s right about that. While I waited, I watched another customer leave the bank and proceed toward his Caprice SS. He came to a halt just outside the driver window and whatever he saw on the reflection must have not appealed to him and decided this was a good time to adust his ghutra. While in the process, his cellphone rang and once done adjusting his head piece, he decided to put that 50 Cent ringtone out of its misery and answer the phone. I hope he wasn’t thinking of driving off while talking on the phone.  The bank is located in the downtown area and it was noon; so this wouldn’t exactly be the best time to drive around unless you can handle bumper-to-bumper traffic and weavers trying to knock you off the road. You can forget about trying to...

Life Means?
2007-02-23 11:23:03
I gaze above at the black velvet sky, and without me knowing my eyes get locked onto to the sparkling stars, my mind gets lost into the twinkling shine, my soul doesn?t realize that it is breathing, and most of all I get lost into a world where I have never been. The darkness gets darker and the stars shine brighter as my soul and my mind meet as if they have never met before. All of a sudden the stars started to speak & they posed a question to me, ?What does life mean to you?? this was a question that I had never thought about, for which my mind had no answer to, but then my soul uttered in a low & freaky voice, ?I know!? and the all of a sudden the stars lost their sparkle and said, ?tell us!? at this very moment my soul began to travel in the vortexes of my heart and itself as I began a journey inside me? Humans no matter whom, what, or from where, have all sorts of ambitions, goals, aims or a reason to live, that reason is created or given birth from our understanding t...

Been a While
2007-02-23 11:23:03
Tectonic plates must have shifted since I last posted anything. It’s been a hectic few weeks and the powers that be have shown no mercy what so ever in the way they sorted out my semester schedule. Not only have I got bags under my eyes big enough to carry $50 worth of groceries, I’ve also lost contact with the rest of the world due to lack of free time to watch TV or surf the web. A week off for the Chinese New Year is exactly what I need to chill and get some much needed sleep to let my brain regenerate some badly needed cells to replace those that have been squeezed of their juices. My excuses for not updating put aside, I’ve decided to at least think of turning my sketching/design hobby into a small business, due to enormous pressure from friends and family (yea guys…I’m not stubborn). It will take some time to put the idea into work since I’ve got lots of school work, but with time things will slowly unwrap. I’ve already got a Flash sit...

A Breezy Morning
2007-02-23 11:23:03
Don’t you ever get tired of defending something when reality itself is working against you? It was a nice breezy morning; not too sunny and neither too cloudy. No classes that morning so traffic around the cafeteria was lighter than usual; a perfect atmosphere for a breakfast conversation with an elderly Chinese acquaintance. Mr. Kim is a self-made entrepreneur in the real estate business and we were meeting to discuss the possibility of me renting one of his houses. Mr. Kim hadn’t arrived yet so I ordered some tea to jump start my day. A few minutes later I hear some loud rap music blaring with full bass and no treble and a second later I realized that it was a bunch of Arab students playing with a car they’d just rented. Just as I was trying to make out who the rapper whose music was being abused was, their car swerved dangerously and came to a stop within inches of the sidewalk and a German luxury ride; they were lucky this time. All five guys got out of the Civ...

Gulf Final
2007-02-23 11:23:03
It was a tough match. Both teams had everything to lose. Both teams never came within arms length of the cup (although it’s Oman’s second time to make it to the finals). But as all finals; only one team would go home victors; only one nation would have its streets filed with crazed, patriotic fans racing and skidding and performing dangerous stunts; only one nation’s citizens would be dancing local dances and partying all night; and the other team would walk back to the lockers, all teary and depressed, feigning smiles as they shake hands with their opponents to show good sportsmanship. But screw sportsmanship. Although Gulf finals are rarely decent, some in the Emarati team sure displayed poor sportsmanship in their desperate attemp to take home the title and impress their leader who was watching from the VIP stand, obviously ready with thousands of Dirhams to pay the sole scorer and UAE goalkeeper for their job and the rest of the team. I rarely watch soccer matc...

Fun Facts About Jack
2007-02-23 11:23:03
The hit TV series 24 has certainly taken the world by storm. The only other show I equally love is Prison Break. Something tells me Jack Bauer is going to out-do James Bond as the world’s greatest licensed killer. Check out these fun facts about Bauer; if they don’t crack you up…you got some issues or you just haven’t watched enough episodes of the show. I’ve chosen a couple of my favorites: - Jack Bauer could strangle you with a cordless phone - Jack Bauer sleeps with a pillow under his gun - When a convicted terrorist was sentenced to face Jack Bauer, he appealed to have the sentence reduced to death

Sam?s Take On Malaysia
2007-02-23 11:23:03
It’s been a while since I’ve updated this joint and you can pick any guess as to what kept me from writing anything. Being in Mala y sia for two months now…I’ve been busy doing everything but sight seeing; pretty ironic huh… Aside from entering a university and renting a house, I’ve had to do a lot of traveling between KLIA, KL, Cyberjaya, Putrajaya, and Melaka (a somewhat historic city). Although cheap if your consider a couple of trips, taxis can make a huge dent in your wallet if your require several trips a day, so I had to rent a car for most of my stay here. Some might ask why not use the metro, but all this traveling is for newcomers, both family and friends, who are also applying for universities or want to start businesss here, or simply to enjoy a two week vacation; who want someone tey know to help them out. So the metro isn’t the best way to go about in such cases. KL isn’t as good as others have told me; due to a couple of f...
