I'M AN ADDICT!!!
2007-11-13 15:13:00 Sadly, it's true. I am an addict. Ever since Thanksgiving, my student and I have been hardcore working out. There are a few gyms on the Island, but we're so busy that I don't have time to commute to and from the gym. I have been doing Slim in 6 and Turbo Jam on and off for the past few years. They're excellent workouts, but I needed something new. I had received Yoga Booty Ballet and Hip Hop Abs with my Turbo Jam order, but never even thought of opening them. Here are some promotional photos of Yoga Booty Ballet and Hip Hop Abs. It's not as easy as it looks, people! For some reason, I had the urge to see what it was all about. I think I was turned off because I am by no means a ballet dancer. I'm not graceful enough and I am in serious lack of poise. My mother enrolled me in jazz ballet when I was a kid. I took one lesson and then decided it wasn't for me. I'm not a girlie girl by any means. I'm also not very coor... More About: Addict

2007-11-12 06:05:00 Orchids and origami, of course! What else where you thinking of?My aunt and uncle in Montreal are the most amazing gardeners I have ever encountered. Their garden is magical! Visitors often feel as though they are in a tropical haven with all the lush foliage that surround them. My aunt and uncle even have a secret garden within their huge garden (which is divided by pagodas and climbing plants) and a beautiful fish pond with the biggest koi I have ever seen!I love plants and flowers as well, so my uncle brings me some of his special prizes whenever he visits us on the Island. His last gift to me was this spectacular chocolate orchid! Yes, people! This orchid makes the house smell like a mixture of sweet vanilla and chocolate! I absolutely love, love, love this orchid! Its flowers are plentiful and every time I walk by them and get a whiff of that yummy chocolate scent, I just have to soak it all in! Can you tell that I'm a chocolate lover? The tiny white and chocolate flowers just...
11/11,11
2007-11-11 15:52:00 At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, Canada observes Remembrance Day. I remember as a child, in school we had a moment of silence to honour those who fought and died in WWI and WWII. As elementary school students, we also had to recite the poem In Flanders Fields. To this day, I can still remember the words of the poem. Now, as an adult, I still take a moment to commemorate the fallen soldiers. In high school and college, for my part-time job, I worked with senior citizens after school and on weekends. One of the ladies I took care of used to tell me stories about her life. She mentioned how the war had a tremendous impact on everyone's lives. I used to listen intently, as this sort of thing seemed so foreign to me. Living in the generation we live in now, everything she said just seemed so distant and something I couldn't relate to. It was so very interesting.I have friends who serve in the military (in the U.S. and in Canada) and every time they are dep...
It's Never Too Late
2007-11-10 14:43:00 It's been nearly five weeks since my friend, British Lion returned to the UK and I'm only now getting around to posting about his visit to the Island.BL spent nearly a month with us and we got to do a lot of sightseeing when I wasn't teaching. He also got to help Hubby on the farm (mending fences that the cattle seem to like to go through) and splitting/piling/loading firewood. Here are some photos of an interesting tree we saw. I had to take a photo of this tree! When I was a kid, I used to imagine that there were magical little wood nymphs living in tree trunks that look like this! I know...I had a very vivid imagination as a child! Here we have British Lion and my student on our visit to the Bridal Veil Falls in Kagawong. They were standing behind the falls. At this time of the year it was more of a light trickle than a powerful rush. It was still pretty though. In the bottom photo, we were taking a walk on the trail at the falls. It's a really lovely trail. It's a very peace... More About: Late
We've Created a Monster!
2007-11-09 14:03:00 A very cute monster, that is!I always find it interesting to see the expressions on the faces of our ESL students when they discover new things and see cultural differences between their country and ours. A few weeks ago, we had some Japanese girls here and one of them was talking about S'mores. When I told them that the word "S'more" meant "some more" and that if you eat one, you always want "some more", all the students laughed and thought it was really neat. Our Korean student was so fascinated by S'mores, so I decided to teach her how to make the classic campfire treat. Now she's addicted! Oh boy!On our recent trip to Montreal, my student had "the best coffee ever" at my aunt's house. That's what she said! She just had to find that coffee and buy it. She did find it on the Island and she did buy it. When she got to our house, she was surprised to see that it wasn't "instant" coffee. I thought she knew that it was a blend of finely ground coffee beans and that she needed t... More About: Monster , Mons
Throwback Thursday #17
2007-11-08 06:00:00 I've been slipping on my Throwback Thursday posts for the past while. Things have gotten crazy busy and if I didn't have enough to do, I decided to do NaBloPoMo! Thank goodness the lovely ladies at Pinks and Blues have come up with Throwback Thursdays! This way, I have NaBloPoMo material even when I'm uninspired! :) Oh, and I get to take a walk down memory lane (and take you guys along with me for the ride)! This week's Throwback is not about me. It's about Baby Bro. I really, really miss Baby Bro. With him being in university (in Kingston), I don't get to see him often. When we do see each other, it's never for long enough! I'd go to Kingston for a few days or he'd come to the Island for a few days. It's never long enough. I miss him.I love to reminisce and look at old photos of Baby Bro. He had the rosiest cheeks ever and he was such a little drool monster! Everyone who met him said that he had "smiling eyes". There was just something about the twinkle in his eyes that ma...
Only on the Island
2007-11-07 14:25:00 A few weeks ago, when one of my friends from the UK was here, I lost my camera case. We were off touring the Island , doing touristy things and when I pulled over on the side of the road for him to take photos, my camera case must have fallen out of the car. Now, I know it's silly to get upset over losing something material. A camera case is just a camera case. Life goes on. However, I'm the type of person who likes to know where everything is. It really annoys me if I lose things. We backtracked and checked out all the places we had been to that day. We went to the Bridal Veil Falls, the Manitoulin Chocolate Works, a few places in Mindemoya and stopped at several spots on HWY 542 to take photos of the glorious Fall colours. We couldn't find my camera case. My poor digital camera would be naked and open to scratches and fingerprints until I got a new case.Did I mention how I hate having to buy something to replace something I've lost? I find it such a waste of money and oftentimes...
A New Restaurant in Town
2007-11-06 15:34:00 Just kidding! The new 'restaurant' is none other than our home. The cook? Yours truly. What else is new? ;)When our ESL students come to Canada, it's not unlikely for them to go through the stages of homesickness and culture shock. One of the ways to help them through this is for us to offer them a little bit of home far away from home. The student we have now hasn't gone through culture shock or homesickness yet, but I wanted her to be aware of the possibility of experiencing it.When we have Japanese or Mexican students, it's fun to cook food from those countries. I decided to give my student something a little Korean by cooking my version of Bibimbap. She calls it Canadian Bibimbap.Bibimbap is a rice dish with lots of vegetables and some meat (if you wish) and some spicy red pepper paste. Yum!You will need:-a carrot (or two), shredded (but not finely shredded)-cucumber, julienned-an onion, chopped-a Tbsp of garlic, minced-2 Tbsp sesame oil-steamed rice (amount depends on how... 2007-11-05 13:54:00 I write about my thoughts, my life, the things that matter to me, the things that bother me and sometimes I even write about the most trivial things ever. I write to keep in touch with friends, family and students. I write to express myself. I write sometimes just to vent.I asked this question last year, and I'll ask it again this year. I'm just curious. Who on earth reads this blog? Drop me a note or leave me a comment to let me know who you are. Whether you are a regular visitor/commenter or a lurker, I'd love to know who reads this silly 'ol blog I've got here. More About: Erin
Confessions
2007-11-04 15:55:00 I am spoiledWell, I'm not really spoiled. I'm occasionally spoiled!A) Hubby cooked supper last night. He is the king of the grill! He does this really nice potato/onion/mushroom with spices thing on the BBQ. Very nice! I cook 99% of our meals, so it's nice to get a break every once in a blue moon.B) My student told me, "Spend some time with your husband", and off she went to my mother-in-law's house to give our youngest niece a piano lesson. She's so sweet. Hubby ended up on the phone doing business stuff for a while, and I ended up correcting journals and homework. Then we watched CSI Las Vegas. Exciting? Not really. At least we got to spend some time together though!I've been really horrible at keeping house this weekA) I still haven't taken down our Halloween decorations and the stores are already putting up the Christmas stuff!B) I always separate our laundry into whites/lights, darks, coloured, delicate and handwash. Don't tell anyone, but this morning I was so tired th... More About: Confessions , Fess
Oh, Baby!
2007-11-03 13:08:00 Perhaps thinking about fears and phobias (from yesterday's post) has had my brain going on overdrive last night. I had some pretty strange dreams. Beachmama's fear of leaving her children with no parents was something that I couldn't get out of my mind last night. I know quite a few parents who have felt that way. I have a friend who didn't want to leave her baby girl with a babysitter or even with Grams and Gramps! This friend's fear of getting into an accident and leaving her daughter with no parents was so strong that she couldn't even go to work.My dream last night was like that, only in real life, Hubby and I don't have any kids of our own yet. Well, not of the human kind! We've got canine, feline and bovine babies though!Anyway, the topic of children and starting a family has come up several times. We've been married for a year and five months, so the idea of babies is definitely out there. This isn't a phobia or a fear. It's more of a worry. I worry about how we'r... More About: Baby
What are you afraid of?
2007-11-02 05:13:00 A few weeks ago, I went on a road trip with my student and my friends (K from Montreal and British Lion from the UK). We sang hits from the 80's and 90's, talked and talked some more. We were on an eight hour ride in the car, so we had lots of time to discuss a wide range of topics from dating, marriage, culture differences, British vs. Canadian English, etc.One of the questions British Lion asked me was if I had any phobias. I used to think I was a rather well-adjusted person, but after our conversation, I realized that I've got a lot of fears! I'm not talking about things like the fear of losing my wonderful husband or a loved one, or the fear of letting people down. I'm talking phobias here... Serious, irrational, persistent fears of a situation, person, place or thing.I'm really afraid of:1) Clowns. I absolutely, positively hate clowns! They just creep me out. The way they look so sinister underneath all that make up...They just scare me. Perhaps it was because I watched t... More About: Raid

2007-11-01 13:26:00 Halloween has come and gone. All the excitement and hype building up for this one day in the year and it's over so soon. This scary skeleton greeted the kids at the door. The trick or treaters were so cute in their costumes. It's so nice to see all the neighbourhood kids! We live in a small community, so almost everyone knows each other. The thing I like about living in the country is that we actually know all the kids who come to our house to trick or treat. It's also really nice to see how much they've grown in a year! One of the kids was just a baby when I moved up to the Island, and now he's walking and talking already! His older brother was only 8 or 9 years old (and tiny) when I moved up here and now he's taller than me!!! I may seem like a goofy kid at heart, but I just love getting dressed up for Halloween. The kids are always surprised to see Hubby and me in costume. They get a kick out of how crazy the two of us are. Our nieces think we're just a bunch of big kids! G...
Happy Halloween!!!
2007-10-31 19:17:00 Hoping everyone has a safe and happy Halloween ! MUAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHA!!!What's everyone giving their trick or treaters tonight? We're giving out some chocolates (nut free) and chips (nut and gluten free), as well as Halloween pencils and erasers. I love Halloween!!! I love seeing all the costumes! In case you're wondering why we can give out pencils, erasers and lots of goodies to our trick or treaters, this is why...We only get about a dozen or so kids in our neighbourhood!! It's a far cry from the 300 and something kids we always had in the city!!! Hubby doesn't mind. This way he gets to have all the goodies that weren't given out! More About: Happy , Allo
Ooooooohhh...Alfie!!!
2007-10-30 19:31:00 Okay, maybe you were thinking more along the lines of Alfie , the British womanizer/limousine driver in NY who spends his time having one night stands. This dish is even more divine than Jude Law (Alfie 2004) and Michael Caine (in the original 'Alfie' in 1966) put together. I'm talkin' Fettuccine Alfredo here. You will need:*1 cup heavy cream (I don't have heavy cream in our house, so I substitute it with milk)*4 Tbsp. butter*4 Tbsp. flour (to thicken)*1 1/2 cups grated Parmesan cheese*1 cup grated Mozzarella cheese (or any other Italian cheese. We just always have Mozzarella in the fridge, so this is what I use)*4 cloves of garlic, crushed (I love garlic, so I usually put quite a bit of it)*1/4 cup white wine*1 cup chicken broth*parsley, a handful (chopped)*black pepper to taste (the original recipe calls for salt too, but with the broth and the cheeses, I find it's already salty enough)First, melt the butter in a saucepan and add the flour. Stir constantly for a few minutes t...

2007-10-29 05:20:00 Karen at A Day in the Life awarded me with the BFF award. Karen's a wonderful writer, she's super funny, has a really great attitude and is just a wonderful person to know. Thank you, Karen!!! I 'met' Karen through some friends of mine in Toronto. Gavie's Gal and Nathanial's Mom were my friends and roomies when I lived in TO. They know Karen from a Mommy group they belong to. Now we're all blogging and I even got to meet Karen in person at NM's house a few weeks ago. There are so many blogs that I read and enjoy. It's come to the point where I actually try not to discover new blogs because I get so wrapped up in the ones I already frequent! I would like to pass this award onto some of my BFFs:Ms.Mamma, Jane, Audrey and Sharon, Louann, NZ Links, Canine, Jimmy and Lotus.Karen already passed the award to Curiosity Killer, Fancy Pantsy, Gavie's Gal, Nathanial's Mom, Beachmama and Cherry Extract. For Canine
2007-10-28 22:13:00 Canine Cologne and I were chatting about some of the dolls I collected, growing up in the 80's. I am a true product of the 80's. I still remember all the words to Michael Jackson's tunes and I remember wearing fluorescent clothes like Cyndi Lauper did! Tight 'almost painted on your skin' jeans were 'in', and blue eye liner and fire engine red lipstick were 'cool'. Madonna was my idol and I once thought I'd marry Jon Bon Jovi (or even Richie Sambora). The Slippery When Wet album was the very first album I bought with my own money. I had it on cassette and vinyl!!! I even thought Boy George was cool once upon a time.Anyway, Canine didn't remember Sea Wees or Charmkins at all. This post is just for you, Canine! Oh, and I don't think you missed too much not knowing that these things existed!I'm embarrassed to say that I collected:Sea Wees, Charmkins, Starwberry Shortcake, and My Little Pony figures. I honestly don't think it was by choice though. I was never a girlie girl,...

2007-10-28 07:50:00 If there's one thing in the world I can't stand, it's IGNORANCE. I have some pretty strong opinions and I don't mind standing up for things that matter to me. I just cannot stand stupid people. I don't mean people who are unintelligent. I mean people who are just ridiculously closed minded and just plain oblivious that there's a world outside of the one they know. Tonight, we had an AMAZING time. It was a girls' night out. I don't usually go out anymore, since I'm married and don't really enjoy going out late and frequenting bars, nightclubs or pubs anymore. That's just me. It's not that I'm boring or that I'm an old married woman. It's not that. I don't know. I just don't have the desire or stamina to be out so late. I've got things to do in the morning and can't sleep in.My student has never experienced Halloween before, as they don't celebrate it in her country. A girlfriend suggested going to a few Halloween parties tonight to show my student some "Canadian" ...
Throwback Thursday #16
2007-10-26 01:22:00 I'm a bit behind on my Throwback Thursday posts since I've been away from home the past two weeks. I just love the Pinks and Blues Girls' Throwback posts so much, that I enjoy posting my own whenever I can. Back in the day, Middle Bro and I used to be inseparable. We used to hang out together and play together. We thoroughly enjoyed each other's company...until adolescence hit and then we were didn't hang out together so much. This pic is one of my faves. I love how cute Middle Bro is here. He was always the sweetest, kindest, most generous and gentle kid ever. I wasn't the nicest older sister. I wish I had more patience and understanding back then. I miss those days where Middle Bro and I used to be really close. Little Kenny (Middle Bro's son) has the same adorable cheeks as Middle Bro had when he was little. Kenny's also got Middle Bro's quiet disposition, curiosity and agreeable personality. This photo was taken in the mid 1980's in Lachute, Quebec. Our neighbour's gra...

Toronto-Kingston-Ottawa-Montreal: Part Deux
2007-10-23 21:31:00 Toronto, Ontario: We kicked off our trip with our first stop being in Toronto. We did a little shopping and spent the rest of our time visiting with friends and family. I had a chance to see Nathanial's Mommy and her newest addition to her family. I can't believe Nathanial's Mommy's little girl is already a month old! I also spent some time with KarenMEG and Gavie's Girl.I noticed that while in Toronto, I started wheezing and I even had an asthma attack. I haven't had an asthma attack since I was thirteen years old!!! Is it possible for a person to be allergic to the city??? Perhaps it's the change in air quality or the smog and car fumes (though Toronto isn't that polluted). I don't know. It's just odd that I reacted the way I did, considering I used to live in Toronto! We also spent some time with some good friends from college and university. It was great hanging out again.Montreal , Quebec: I cannot stress how much I love Montreal! Walking along the cobblestone streets o... More About: Toronto , Part , Kingston , Ottawa

2007-10-23 05:16:00 Ottawa, Ontario: A must see for my student from South Korea. Ottawa's our nation's capital, there are lots of beautiful buildings, you can go on a tour of the parliament buildings, it's a really pretty city. Yadda, yadda, yadda.Okay, I'm certain I'm not doing Ottawa much justice here. Ottawa was actually our last city on our whirlwind tour. We just thought it would be a great idea to show my student our capital since we were in the area. It wasn't scheduled on our itinerary. All of my friends from Ottawa who are reading this, please know that I do love Ottawa and that I know that there are a lot of wonderful shops, art galleries, museums, and neat places to check out. I was just being cranky because it was day 11 of our trip and I was really eager to just get home to Hubby :)Kingston , Ontario: Our nation's first capital city. Where to Eat in Montreal
2007-10-22 19:02:00 Before I write a proper post and upload photos of our Toronto-Kingston-Mont real -Ottawa trip, I must share some of my cool new Montreal finds! Some may say I'm a Montreal snob since I refuse to eat bagels, smoked meat or poutine if they're not from Montreal. I can't help it. Montreal...C'est ma ville! CK makes a point of listing her fave restaurants, giving food reviews and uploading photos from these restaurants. CK, this is for you :)Montreal is such a wonderful city. It's full of history, rich in culture and the arts...and it home to so many different types of restaurants, bistros, cafes...You name it and Montreal has it!Segafredo Zanetti is by far one of the coolest places to hang out with friends over an espresso and a mouthwatering dessert. On the Road Again
2007-10-11 07:04:00 No matter how wonderful home is, sometimes it's nice to get away and do some road trippin'. Great tunes, the open highway, and good company can make any road trip into a memorable adventure. Don't forget your digital camera, because you never know what you'll come across! It's a great way to capture funny moments, crazy mishaps, and to just document your trip so you can be reminded of all the fun you had.I'm leaving Hubby for 10 days and heading to Toronto, Kingston and Montreal with my friend from Montreal, my friend from England and my student from South Korea. It will be a whirlwind tour with many people and places to visit in such a short time. This will be the longest time Hubby and I will have spent apart. What a bad wife I am. It's Hubby's birthday on Friday and I'll be out of town :( Good thing I had a surprise party for him tonight with two (yes, TWO) birthday cakes!I'm excited because:1) I'm going to see my friends Gavie's Gal, Nathanial's Mommy, and KarenMEG.... 2007-10-09 05:13:00 On Thanksgiving, we have a tradition of having each person at the dinner table say something that they are thankful for. I am thankful for many things and among them are the following:1) I'm thankful for having such a wonderful, caring, loving, understanding, patient, hardworking husband.2) I'm thankful for having an amazing family.3) I'm thankful for having fantastic friends (some of whom have traveled a long way to spend Thanksgiving weekend with us).4) I'm thankful for great students and having the opportunity to teach some brilliant, talented, warm, and inquisitive students.5) I'm thankful for my pup, Chance. He'll be turning 5 yrs old on Saturday (Hubby's b-day is on Friday).6) I'm thankful for being able to live on a beautiful island.7) I'm thankful for having a roof over our heads and food on our plates.8) Most of all, I'm just thankful to be happy and healthy and able to enjoy the life that I have :) More About: Today , Hank

2007-10-05 22:25:00 To all my Canadian friends out there, have a Happy Thanksgiving weekend!!!This will be my first time hosting Thanksgiving dinner on my own. Usually, we go over to my mom's, Hubby's mom's, one of my aunts' houses or Hubby's sister's. This year, since I've got a lot of visitors and students, I'll be hosting Thanksgiving. Phew! I knew it was a lot of work since I've always helped out in the preparations, but I didn't know hosting the dinner would be such a huge undertaking! I'm excited and hope all turns out well!On the menu:*Turkey (of course!) with stuffing on the side and homemade cranberry sauce* Sweet potato casserole* Zucchini pie* Cucumber salad* Ham (my mom's making this dish--especially for my husband. He likes it with pineapple and marachino cherries)*Fruit salad (my mom's making this too)*Cherry pie*Pumpkin pie (if I get ambitious)Well, I guess I'd better stop blogging and start preparing for Thanksgiving supper for tomorrow! Throwback Thursday #15
2007-10-04 19:16:00 I'm a little late in posting this week's Throwback Thursday . Better late than never, right? The Pride Parade was an anual event for us. There were two things that the girls did together every year: Go to the Pride Parade and go on an all girls camping trip. The reason I love this photo is because it rem...
Some things I've learned
2007-10-03 04:21:00 1) An old couch on your front lawn looks really "redneck".2) An old door on your front lawn also looks totally redneck!3) Both #'s 1 and 2 aren't that bad (only left out on the lawn temporarily) if Hubby is going to replace the front door with a brand spankin' new 9-lite door! Yes, I have been meaning to put a few coats of stain on our outside walls. Hubby likes the 'rustic' look. He says it looks and feels very 'country'. I think a new stain would be nice though :)4) A kitchen island is always a handy thing to have. 5) I love the smell of clothes when they've dried outside on the clothesline. It saves money from throwing your laundry in the dryer, and the sun is great for removing stains. Plus, I love the look of clothes drying on the clothesline! 6) Once all the fruits and veggies have been harvested, a lot of pickling and canning must be done. I freeze some of the produce and use some immediately (there's nothing better than fresh fruits and veggies). I've learned to ma... More About: Things , Learned , Some
