A Neat Little Gem
2008-06-04 20:56:00
Nestled amongst some eye-catching gift shops and places to stay in South Baymouth, stands a wonderful little pizzeria. People often ask me where they can eat when they're visiting the Island. I always recommend the places that I've been to and love. Last week was the first time I had eaten at this quaint little pizza place. Hubby decided that I needed a rest from cooking and he took me out for a 'date'.Hubby has always raved about this pizza place and I have passed by it on many occasions, but have never had a chance to try it out. Usually when I'm in South Baymouth, it's to see off friends or family who are taking the ferry across to Tobermory or I'm there when I'm taking students on day trips. The pizzeria is conveniently located right beside the WigWam Gift Shop & Motel and across from the ferry terminal. Those of you who have been reading my blog for a while know that I'm not much of a meat fan and I don't really like pizza. *gasp* I know...I'm sorry! We eat a lo...
Letting the cat out of the bag...
2008-06-03 14:47:00
This is something I have seen a lot of in the blog world recently. Some of my bloggy friends have posted the contents of their handbags and it has been something I have been meaning to do for ages now. I've just been too busy preoccupied lazy to take a photo of the contents of my bag. It's really interesting to see what kind of stuff one carries around! I couldn't believe just how much stuff I could cram into my bag! Crazy! In my bag, you will see:2 packages of Kleenex tissues1 heart shaped Post-It pad1 elastic hair tie2 pens (I used to carry around 5 or 6 because I'm paranoid that when I need a pen I won't have one or if one doesn't work at least I'll have extra...and if I someone asks me if they can borrow a pen, I don't really want it back because of germs and I end up telling them to keep it. I know. I am a freak!)4 photos (of Chance when he was a few weeks old, my nephew when he was newly born, Baby Bro's grad photo and a photo and obituary of my late aunt who died a ...

Sex and the City
2008-06-02 02:23:00
I have to confess that I haven't had a chance to see Sex and the City at the movie theater yet. To be honest, the only reason I haven't seen the movie yet is because the nearest movie theater to the Island is two hours away!!!I am really looking forward to seeing it and have heard rave reviews about the movie. If I were still living in Toronto, I know just which of my girl friends I'd love to have seen the movie with!I suppose the main reason I've enjoyed watching Sex and the City on TV is because I was just blown away by the honesty and intimacy Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda shared in their friendship. The four characters are all funny, flawed, and human. The discussions between the friends was something I could sort of relate to with my friends. Of course, not exactly the same as in the show!! My girl friends would sit over coffee and talk about "man problems". We'd stay up late and eat apple pie together and just listen if one of us went through a break-up. My girl...

My bloggy gal pals and I were laughing about the "Little Asian Girl Haircut" (A.K.A. The Bowl Cut) that we all sported when we were kids. Growing up the 1970's and 1980's, it seemed almost everyone had the same hairstyle. I never knew why it was called "the bowl cut" until I saw my Mom actually put a bowl on my brother's head and cut around it!!! Ha! Ha! Ha! I still laugh every time I picture her doing that.*sigh* I was so skinny back then!!In the last photo, I'm the one on the right. I'm the only girl, yet we all have the same haircut!!Oh, don't think for one minute that Baby Bro was spared from Mom's wielding scissors and most detested "bowl cut" bowl! Though an entire decade passed between Baby Bro, Middle Bro and me, that didn't stop Mom's bowl cut! I think I was ten or eleven when I begged her to take me to the hairdresser's to get my hair cut! When I have kids, I am going to leave the haircutting to the professionals!

This post is actually two months late, since my little nephew turned a year old in March. I am always amazed at how quickly time flies. It seems that not too long ago, we were still anticipating his arrival. Now he's a year old, talking (sort of) and walking running all over the place.**If you've been reading my blog for the past year, you may have seen some or all of these photos already.**Dear Kenny,It is hard to believe that we didn't even know that you were on your way when this photo was taken. Your Mom and Dad had no idea that they were expecting you when they were at our wedding on the Island! When your Mom and Dad found out and told us the good news, everyone was so excited! You are the first grandchild on both sides of your family. Your Mom looked so radiant when she was pregnant with you. You should know that you've got a wonderful Mom and Dad! They are so very blessed that you came into their lives.I remember after you were born, I went down to spend a week with you an...

Growing up, our family was never really exposed to rhubarb. It just wasn't something that we ate. It's not common in either of my parents' cultures, so it wasn't used in any of the cooking.I remember living in a small suburb of Montreal called Roxboro, where our neighbours' houses were so close to each other. Naturally, we became friendly with our immediate neighbours on either side of our house. Two doors down, there was another family we became friends with. The girl was about the age of Middle Bro (a year and a half younger than me). This was long before Baby Bro was born. The girl was an only child (she had a sister born the same year as Baby Bro--when Middle Bro was nine and I was eleven). She, Middle Bro and I used to hang out a lot. Her mother would look after us after school while we waited for our parents to come home from work. We'd do our homework, do some arts and crafts, play outside and just be kids.We learned a lot from that family. They sometimes took us to thei...

Little Miracles...and a Hairy Butt!!!
2008-05-27 05:20:00
I haven't written a Thankful Tuesday post in a while. I think I started writing Thankful Thursday posts, but Thursdays became Throwback Thursdays once Pinks & Blues invented those wonderful weekly specials.Anyway, today I am thankful for:* a husband who is so very supportive of me and who believes enough in me so that I can have my own business doing what I love (teaching ESL). Thank you, Hubby! :)* being able to live on such a beautiful island.* living a few minutes away from my parents so that I am able to have supper with them once a week! :)* being able to witness little miracles each and every day.* blue skies and sunny days!Okay, I promise that my next post will not be about the barn kittens, my dog, the cattle or the farm. I realize I've been going just a tad overboard with all the cute animal photos here! I just can't help it though!I am just so amazed at how tiny the kittens were when they were born and how quickly they grow! They are much more active and mobile now...

I've always been called a "bleeding heart". Ever since I was a little girl I was dubbed a "bleeding heart". Some have said in the past that I am "overly sympathetic to the plight of others" and when discussing topics like Darfur, Tibet, Burma, or China, I get the "who cares if people in other countries are suffering? People should just take care of themselves." If being a bleeding heart is a bad thing, then I guess it's something I'm going to have to deal with. That's just who I am. I'll do what I can to help out others who are in need and who are not as able as most to help themselves. These bleeding hearts in the photo are located in front of our house next to the tulips. They're very special to Hubby, as his family used to have bleeding hearts when they lived down south (before they moved to the Island).Around here, I've been known to come up with some pretty wacky recipes. This particular one is a spin-off of my aunt's zucchini pie. We just love her zucchini pie! Instead ...
Farming 101
2008-05-22 17:48:00
Alternate title for this post = City Girl's Guide to Life on the Farm!Sometimes I feel so stupid. After nearly two years of being married to a farmer, I am only now learning some of the lingo used around here. Remember the time I thought that "a cow dropped" meant that she had cardiac arrest and just collapsed in the field and died? Hubby had to tell me that it meant that the cow gave birth to a calf. Sheeesh! There are some expressions that just aren't natural or don't make sense to city folk like me.I'm pleased to say that I have learned what "seeding" means. It does not mean when a man goes around and "spreads his seed". I've learned that "first cut" and "second cut" aren't expressions used only in the movie/film business. I've learned that "baling" is an agricultural term used when a farmer "bales" hay (or whatever else is in his crop). I've also learned that "wrapping" refers to wrapping bales with plastic and not wrapping presents for your wife! ;)I know what baler twi...

Throwback Thursday #27
2008-05-22 15:03:00
I know I'm way behind in posting my Throwback Thursday posts. Again, no excuse other than it's been crazy busy around here. Haven't we all heard that one before? ;) Though I've been really bad terrible horrible at keeping up with my TT posts, I'm glad that the Pinks & Blues Girls came up with this fun idea of taking some time to walk down memory lane. When I do actually get around to posting, I always enjoy reminiscing. This set of photos is from my not so distant past. The photos were taken on June 1, 2001. I was twenty-five years old, living in Toronto, enjoying my life as an ESL teacher at a really good ESL school and just loving my time with my friends. Here I am with some of the other teachers I worked with. Oh, we weren't always allowed to wear casual clothes! Only on Fridays! Plus, we were taking our students to Canada's Wonderland via bus and subway that day. My beautiful friend, Gavie's Gal is posing in the top photo with me. Gosh! Look how young we were in...
An ex is an ex for a reason
2008-05-20 18:05:00
That is what my wonderful friend, Gavie's Gal told me many, many years ago in our lovely yet over-priced rented Elmhurst Avenue house. In her infinite wisdom, or possibly just to soothe my aching heart at the time, Gavie's Gal told me that "an ex is an ex for a reason" and that sometimes people just aren't right for each other no matter how much they want things to work out.Fast forward a few years, and Gavie's Gal's words rang true. I finally did get over "The Ex" and eventually I learned to let go and move on. When I least expected it, I met Hubby (he wasn't known as "Hubby" back then yet). I never realized how wonderful life would be when with the "right" person. Of course, one always hopes and dreams of finding the right person, but actually finding that person is a dream come true.I recall having a serious conversation with my friend, Mr. WhomAllTheGirlsSwoonOver in his artsy High Park apartment one summer night after we had graduated from university. We were working on ...

Blog Facelift
2008-05-18 22:13:00
I was over at Starshine's blog and fell in love with her new blog template. For quite some time now, I have been contemplating a new look for the blog. I've become quite bored with the look and wanted to spruce things up a bit. I told you blogging was addictive! If I'm not reading blogs, replying to comments, commenting, researching, I'm looking for new ways to play with HTML codes and such. Errrrr...Uhhhh...That's when I'm not teaching, working, helping Hubby on the farm or anything! ;)I have to admit that I was a little bit apprehensive at first. You see, I tried before to change my template and ended up losing everything! All that hard work with links, layouts, fonts, etc...all gone. Unless you've spent lots of time labouring over HTML codes and all things related to your blog, I don't know if you'd realize just how frustrating it is to have to start from scratch! *sigh* All those links I've acquired in the past three years...down the drain (or better yet, lost in cyber...

Love at First Blog
2008-05-18 01:22:00
Hi! My name is C, and I'm a blogaholic.I never imagined that I'd have a blog of my own. A few years ago, a friend introduced me to the wonderful world of blogging. I started to read hers and then a few others. All of a sudden, I found myself writing my own blog. I didn't think I'd have time to blog. Most of the time, I really have no idea of what to write about. Oftentimes, I don't even think what I have to say is interesting! This said, I still find myself taking mental notes of things to put on the blog while I'm teaching a lesson, doing chores or driving my car. I take photos in restaurants and when the wait staff and other diners shoot over odd looks, I keep saying, "It's for the blog!" Middle Bro once commented on my Facebook and said, "Why do you take so many photos of food?" The answer is simple. It's for the blog!Yes, I am indeed addicted to blogging. This blog contains snippets of my new life as a sort of newly married woman living on an island I had never known exi...

Edible Wilds
2008-05-16 22:40:00
My Dad is a very wise man. When I was a little girl, my parents used to take our family on annual camping trips. We lived in the city, so they wanted to expose us to nature and just spend some quality time with us kids. We used to camp in Gatineau, Algonquin, New Brunswick, and even Virginia Beach! My brothers were far more interested in fishing and catching frogs and snakes than they were in identifying the different flora and fauna. Dad taught the boys how to fish, but he took me on walking tours through the woods and showed me all sorts of wonderful edible plants! I really cherish those special times with Dad. I remember listening to his infinite wisdom. He always seemed to have such a strong connection to nature and understood the delicate relationships between all living organisms. My Dad once told me "if you're out in the wilderness you will never starve". He's right! If you are stuck in the wild and you know what to look for, you will not go hungry. When I was in the bush mo...

Just another day on the farm
2008-05-16 04:46:00
Now that J-Boy has left and I am in between students, I can focus on getting things around the house done and help Hubby with work that he needs to get done. You'd think that now that I've got "free time" since I'm waiting for the next batch of students, I'd be able to relax. Right? Wrong! Definitely wrong!Today started out bright and early with a load of laundry to be washed and hung outside to dry. After that, Chance needed to be groomed...desperately! Next, weed the garden, pick asparagus and rhubarb. Clean and cut rhubarb, and then put them into freezer bags to freeze for later use.Hubby and I were supposed t0 fix fences and move cattle from one field to another. After that, we were supposed to fix a tractor that had broken down. We started to move cattle right after lunch and by the time we finished, it was 6:30! Nothing ever goes as planned when you live on a farm! Now I understand why we can't just make out a schedule and follow it. Something always goes wrong, things fa...

It's been a very busy few weeks and I've got some things to share with you.1. These photos are of our Mother's Day celebration on the weekend.Jimbo, I thought you'd like to see another photo of the ice cream cake! Here's a cross section shot for you.My beautiful 88 year old grandmother...and her famous leche flan. This is what I'm going to need to do a lot of after our day of celebrating!2. Hubby and I went to the Island Singers concert last night. If any of you are ever visiting the Island when there's an Island Singers concert, please go and listen! You will be blown away! I can't even tell you how beautiful the music is. I'm not just saying this because my mother-in-law and a good friend of mine are in the Island Singers. I'm saying this because it's true. Last night, Hubby, my SIL, Niece2 and I were sitting in the front row and some of the songs were just so moving that they brought me to tears. Yes, I'm a cry baby and I cry when I watch Tim Horton's commercials and...

2008-05-10 16:14:00
Happy Mother's Day (tomorrow) to all my mommy friends out there! Hope your day is filled with love and lots of pampering :)I'm not a mom...yet. Since I'm not yet a mommy, I decided that this year I will celebrate and honour some of the very special mommies in my life. We've got family from Montreal (including one of my favourite aunts), my grandmother is here from the Philippines, and of course we've got my mom, my mother-in-law and my sister-in-law who lives right around the corner from us.Au lieu of taking all the moms to a restaurant, I decided that Mother's Day would be at our house. It was going to be on Sunday, but my mother-in-law is singing in the Island Singers concert and my cousin, Super Boy is returning to Montreal since he has to work on Monday. There will be fourteen dinner guests tonight and I've been cooking since 8:30 this morning.Remember how I said that Baby Bro taught me how to work under pressure? This is what I'm talking about. The old me would never pl...

2008-05-08 19:47:00
I always look forward to Baby Bro's visits. His visits are never long enough and even when he's here, I feel like I miss him. Does that even make sense? If you've been reading my blog for a while, you'll know that Baby Bro is my youngest brother (I've got two brothers) and he is the apple of my eye. I know it sounds weird, but he's very special to me because he's so much younger than I am and I was his second mom. I used to take him to baseball practices and drive him to his games. I used to bring him to his acting lessons on Saturday mornings and drive his friends home after parties. Instead of reading him Dr. Seuss books, I used to read him works by Shakespeare, Orwell, the Brothers Grimm, Dickens, etc.Baby Bro was supposed to come to the Island for a few days to spend Mother's Day with us. He was going to bring his amazing girlfriend (I love that girl!), his best friend and his best friend's girlfriend. Unfortunately, Baby Bro's work scheduled him in for the weekend eve...

Wednesday Already!?!? (and ways to TOTALLY annoy your husband)
2008-05-07 20:58:00
Where on earth did the week go? I just noticed that my last post was on Saturday and today's Wednesday already!?!My grandma's here visiting and we've got a Japanese boy here for another two weeks. My cousin, Super Boy is here until Sunday and more family will be coming up from Montreal tomorrow. Between getting the house ready for our guests, getting things organized for the next batch of students, trying to figure out what I'm going to cook for Mother's Day (I'm hosting supper at our house on Sunday), running errands around the Island and Stinky-nola for my mother and grandmother...I seem to have lost track of time and what day it is! In case you were wondering what Stinky-nola is, that's what Hubby used to call Espanola when he was a kid. If you've ever gone through Espanola, you'll know why!I took J-Boy on a tour around the Island. We went to the Manitoulin Soap Factory, Little Current, M'Chigeeng, Kagawong, the Bridal Veil Falls, Gore Bay, Spring Bay (to see the windm...

I'm a Creep
2008-05-04 00:37:00
*sigh*Karen, I know you'll appreciate this one. Remember my habit of occasionally misunderstanding lyrics for certain songs? You know..."You make me feel like a man should a woman" and "I'm your (insert name of male anatomy that rhymes with 'Venus' here), I'm your fire, your desire". Okay, so I'm a bit off sometimes. Anyway, I love Radiohead but always thought that the lyrics were: "I'm a freak" and not "creep".I've been feeling like a freak/creep lately. Ever since I broke that blood vessel in my eye from coughing (I mean, who does that?!?!) I have been feeling very, very self-conscious. My eye is hideous and I'm bummed that it will take weeks to look normal again. I should have known. I'm the type of person who falls into holes in the middle of downtown Toronto traffic while walking on the sidewalk. There can be absolutely no potholes around, but I'll find one...and fall in it. I'm the person who trips and sprains her ankle while walking on completely flat surfaces. I...

Some of you have been with me since the birth of this blog and you've watched as I prepared for my wedding day. You were there to share in our special day...The day I became the farmer's wife! You saw that becoming a farmer's wife has had some ups and downs. It's definitely not an easy life! However, it certainly is rewarding. I'm a city girl, but I don't think I can ever live in the city ever again. I return to the city quite often to visit friends and family and to do whatever shopping I need to do. I have discovered that the Island is just too beautiful for me to ever want to live elsewhere.Fellow bloggers (and non-bloggers), you were there throughout all of our family gatherings and celebrations. You watched as Hubby was initiated into the family. You helped us welcome the new additions to our family (new additions of the human, feline and bovine kind). By now, you know how important my family and my roots are to me. You even offered words of comfort during some difficul...

Throwback Thursday #26
2008-05-01 20:08:00
It's been a while quite some time a long time AGES since I last posted a Throwback Thursday post. I'm really glad the girls at Pinks and Blues came up with the Throwback idea. It's always fun to rifle through old photos and relive fond memories. This particular Throwback Thursday brings us back to the Summer of 2001. My girlfriends (roommates at the time) and I lived in Toronto and decided to go to Montreal for Canada Day. There's nothing more fun than a road trip with your girlfriends! When I think about us driving to Montreal for Canada Day, it makes me laugh. Going to Quebec for Canada Day??My two lovely girlfriends (Gavie's Gal and Nathanial's Mommy) and I had a blast. We went to le festival de Jazz, strolled through le Vieux Port and Vieux Montreal, went to the Casino de Montreal, and revisited some of my old college and university hang outs.We got to see Nelly Furtado perform live for the Canada Day festivities. I remember people in the crowd kept booing Nelly off stage. ...

One of my new favourite blogs is Rowing and Sowing. I had first heard of Rowing and Sowing via Jimmy's blog. Rowing and Sowing is a beautiful blog with stunning photographs and the most thoughtful writing.Another website I think you should visit is my friend, Josh's site. Josh and I taught in Japan together almost a decade ago. He is a fantastic artist and is full of creativity. His website highlights the art of Joshua Best. Check it out :)Josh isn't the only multi-talented person in his family. His mother, Sherry is a singer/songwriter. When I was living and working in Japan, my grandfather died and then one of my uncles died. I was so far from Canada, home, family and friends, that I began to get a little homesick. Other things happened that made me miss home, but Josh gave me a copy of his mom's CD and the songs on her CD somehow helped me through some tough times.Sherry Lawson (photo from Google Images)Sherry's lyrics and beautiful voice are very special. I'm not one to complain a lot, but this is ridiculous. Remember how sick I've been for the past week? Just when I thought I was getting better, things suddenly got worse!!!I ended up in the emergency room at the hospital today (thanks, Mom for dragging me even though I didn't think I needed to go). You see, I sort of knocked myself out from one of those relentless coughing fits. It was non-stop coughing and I couldn't breathe. Oh, it gets even better than this. Not only was I coughing up a lung and unable to breathe, but I had a Fisherman's Friend in my mouth and started choking!!!Yeah. Right after that I ended up knocking myself out and giving myself a beautiful little bump on the back of my head. Nice. Try telling the attending doctor that you knocked your head on the floor and ended up with a bump on your head because you started choking on a Fisherman's Friend!!! Ummm...Not only do I have a bump on the back of my head, but now I also have the most horrific red eye ever!!! ...

You followed me home sometime last week and you don't seem to want to leave me alone! You're making me miserable. Sleepless nights, tossing and turning, painful coughing fits, the chills, cold sweats, and broken blood vessels around my eyes from coughing are only some of the many fine presents you gave me.First, I tried my *cider vinegar potion. It usually does the trick. Nope. Not this time. Then I tried my *ginger tea recipe. Despite the horrible taste, you still stuck around!I tried orange juice and chicken noodle soup for a few days. Nothing. You're still here.I tried taking a hot bath and letting the steam clear up my chest. It worked for a while, but then you returned.I tried filling the sink with hot water and a few drops of eucalyptus oil and hovering over the sink with a towel over my head so I could breathe in the steam. That was only a temporary fix.I even slathered on the Vicks vapo rub and you still wouldn't leave!I don't like taking medicine, but since nothing seem...

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and Something Blue
2008-04-26 02:44:00
With quite a few of my friends and family members getting married soon, I've found myself rifling through my memory boxes for my own momentos. The day of my wedding was all a blur that I don't even remember what my something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue were! I think the something new was the gold necklace one of my Chinese great-aunts gave me. The something blue may have been the blue lace trim on my garter belt, but I'm not sure!Going through my boxes of memories (the same boxes that my drawings and paintings were tucked away in), I found this scrunched up piece of paper:I wrote this list on July 23, 2001. This was years before I'd meet Hubby. This was years before I found out the Island even existed! This was years before I'd realize what a real relationship was like and how a real boyfriend was supposed to treat me.On the list, I wrote a few things that were important to me when it came to "the right guy for me". This is something I carried with me...

Calling All Artists!!!
2008-04-25 16:31:00
Ever since I was a little girl, I've always wanted to help those who were not able to help themselves. From petitioning to save our rain forests and indigenous animals, to volunteering at the women's shelter, supporting World Vision and other charities, I always felt that if we are in a position to help the less fortunate or those who are unable to help themselves, then we should. It may sound strange, but when it comes to children and even animals, I feel the impulse to help out even more if I can. Why children and animals? They are defenseless compared to adults who can find ways to survive. I've always felt that children should be able to be children. They should be given the ability to go to school, play, eat healthy meals, and have a safe and comfortable place to sleep at night. My father always called me a Mother Theresa wannabe. I am not even half as devoted to the charities of my choice as my friend (and former colleague) Jen is to hers. Jen is the reason I'm writing thi...

I have been such a delinquent blogger (but not on purpose)! I've just returned to the Island from a few days in Montreal and haven't had time to read my favourite blogs, return e-mail or use the computer much. When we left the Island, I was complaining that the price of gas was really high at 117.6, but I was shocked that in Quebec gas is even more expensive! It was 134.4! CRAZY! I have a feeling the price of gas will be like this all summer. *sigh*Remember the Crème Brûlée that my husband loves so much? There's a delightful little place called Premiere Moisson in le Marche de l'Ouest. Premiere Moisson is a boulangerie, charcuterie, patisserie all in one. If you want proscuitto, patés, terrines, or sausages, you can find them there.
