fatigué: adjective meaning 'tired'.My team and I won a difficult legal wrangle today. The law suit was about something I had put my sweat and blood and tears into. I was about to give up hope but the court's ruling arrived just before it would have been too late. That and a few other things were the reason for the sabbatical. The blogging holiday will sadly continue because there is still a lot

Having unexpectedly got a day off today I couldn't resist posting this meme from Terra Shield's page who in turn stole it from Sunday Stealing. It brought back loads of memories from the days I started my only blog ever.1. How did you come up with your blog title OR what does it mean?Google's English-to-Hindi translator calls it 'Pagal Razai'! I wanted it to be like a crazy quilt - colorful,

Community Altar...Dia de MuertosOriginally uploaded by faerybootsI sometimes wonder what will happen when I will be gone and all my music frozen in the voids of time. How would I be remembered? And by whom? I have known people who attend funerals and condolence meetings because it gets them brownie points. And some others who care neither for the bereaved nor the dead but go because they can't

X Marks the Spot

Since I am fond of reading and it's the third time I got tagged with this one, the earlier two instances being on Facebook, I thought I might as well do this book meme. (At least it'll keep up the frequency of posting.) It is apparently a list drawn up by the BBC. The alliterative Silver Sabre of the six strings and the sketchpads tagged me with it.Here are the rules:1) Look at the list and put

Tongues In a Knot
2009-03-02 13:27:00
Let me clarify without any ado that by 'tongues' I mean languages. I often find myself tripping over them.A seminar on custom made chopper motorbikes was once held during the annual technical festival of my college. I was told that the speaker was from one Verdencci Motorcycle Company located near Mumbai. I wondered why an Italian company would make choppers over here. Soon I learnt that owner

Photoshop- challenged and design challenged moi has modified the template you had been seeing on this blog for almost two and half years. It works great in Firefox but doesn't look very good in IE. The only major visible change is the color scheme used on the page. Apart from that, the sidebars have been restructured. When I returned from a long blogging hiatus last month, I found this place swarming with dead links and spam. That's when I decided the blog needed some spring cleaning and a fresh coat of paintColorschemedesigner.com is where I could determine that mera wala Red (a la Asian paints) was '78101E' in HTML. I had decided the color that would go best go with the Crazy Quilt picture in the header and the rest of the color scheme was generated by the tool. You can even create your own shades. For example, I darkened and saturated the color used in the sidebars to get the font color. That's pretty neat considering I managed to barely clear drawing and painting exams in sc...

5 Minute Meme
2009-02-19 21:07:00
Rajtilak who writes the romantic, poetic, and technological The Chronicles of R has tagged me with this meme that threatens to give out way too much about me. Pshaw!1. If your lover betrayed you, what would your reaction be?That's a scary thought. I’d be devastated. I'd say goodbye but would want to know why he did it.2. If you can have a dream come true, what it would be?Eco-friendly technology coming to the underprivileged, to those living in far-flung places and to everyone in general - the way it was done here.Personally speaking, I have lots of dreams. I want all of them to come true.3. Whose butt would you love to kick?Nobody's. For now.4. What would you do with a billion dollars?Save some of it for a rainy day and invest some more. With the rest I'd buy a lot of books and satisfy all my wanderlust. Venice, Galapagos, Hampi, Benaras, Macchu Pichhu, Barcelona, Trafalgar Square, the Vatican...5. Will you fall in love with your best friend?Nyet. A partner can definitely be...

My Very First Hate Comment! Yoohoo!
2009-02-15 15:15:00
As much as I had announced that I'll be away, I found in my mailbox this gem engraved on my blog on Friday the thirteenth. And it was too good to ignore, delete or put off for another time.Immature fucking bitch. Maybe a screw from your dog will put sense into your fucked skull.Check it out in the comments on this post. Sadly I'll never know who the spout of this sublime wisdom is. The comment is anonymous. It had me cracked up. Getting screwed by dogs makes one sensible! Rotfl.I had always felt sorry about the fact that in three full years of blogging I had never encountered criticism here, constructive or otherwise. All my blogger friends and readers have always appreciated me. A lot of them have crossed over into my life and I don't consider them 'virtual friends'. No one ever said I was great but I never heard anything negative about myself. I was bored of all the sweetness and mutual admiration. I can't thank you enough, Mr/Ms Anonymous for giving me my first hate comment...

View From My Window
2009-02-03 23:05:00
I don't gaze out of my window any more simply because there is nothing to look at. Barely fifteen feet away from my second-storey apartment stands an imposing, officey high-rise covering the field of vision entirely. When I was a kid the view was different. Far into the distance I could see hills in varying shades of blue. That an atomic reactor stood in their midst only intrigued me further. Closer home, a solitary skyscraper broke the blue of the skyline. Not far behind it stood three identical administrative buildings in green and white. Over the years I saw Mumbai's biggest corporate and administrative hub rise around them. About a year ago a plot of land over there was sold for a hundred crores (that's 1 billion Indian rupees.) I now realize the change I had been witnessing wasn't just the one in the cityscape. In the immediate vicinity of my home were a few coconut palms, an illegal hutment, a shop that sold ground spices, a flour mill that filled sleepy afternoons with its...

Like a porcupine that had heard one jibe too many about its pricks, New Delhi Television shot its quills at a blogger. It served him a legal notice and got his 'offensive' and 'libelous' post taken down. The blogger has put up an apology on his site. The post comments on the its journalist's coverage of the hostage situation and terrorist attacks on Mumbai in November. As a blog-writer and reader I get the feeling that the post is just spontaneous and angry. His opinions and observations are apparently based on what was telecast on television and published in the newspapers an on the internet. (So is this post.) If he was trying to point out the reporter's gaffes he'd be only one of the many who have said similar things earlier - on ether, on blogs and in print. Some of the language in the post was strong but going by the rest of his posts I'd put it down to the shock and outrage of the goings-on at time it was published. There is much anger and indignation about the 'stifli...

Dear Diary - II
2009-01-24 19:36:00
The ways of fortune are fickle. One of my dearest and oldest friends has made his mark in Bollywood. I am so happy for him. For someone who couldn't afford school books, his story is amazing though not uncommon. Our friendship is special to me because he and I are so different we are like two different species. Yet we are thick friends. I wish I could get to see more of him. I often joke that he is my Halley's comet.Babugiri. Is what the University of Mumbai does. It's also the reason why I got my Diploma in Spanish last week 9 months after writing the exam for it. The results of the exam were held back because a major slip in the paperwork invalidated the course. M.U is mired in babudom, buried a few feet deep in bureaucracy, wrapped in cocoons of red tape. For the first few months all I got was assurances that things would be put right. Frustrated and not wanting to run from pillar to post, I shot off an email to the Vice Chancellor. I also approached the press. The VC took no...

Dear Diary - I
2009-01-23 20:21:00
Netagiri. That's what Mom calls it. Since a couple of months I have been unofficially involved with a relatively new political party, the rank and file of which is largely young and dynamic. What a refreshing change they are from the decrepit old men and women who run our country!I was wary of getting acquainted with them initially. The party is known for being intolerant and brute-force wielding. (In the party headquarters I overheard someone jokingly ask on the phone, "What jail are you in now?".)My brush with them makes me feel there is more to them than just nuisance value. There is a method to their madness. Their violence and vandalism, apparently spontaneous, are mostly calculated. Their use of brute force perhaps the only way to get results when time is short and resources few. Nobody takes notice unless you do something newsworthy like, say, burn a couple of buses. But to be civilised there must be at least two. That is, the other should appreciate that you don't burn bus...

Standing Tall
2008-12-15 17:30:00
Being young and single by choice in a country where the search for the search for a suitable boy or girl is a national pastime has its perils. One of them is encountering suggestions of a 'suitable match' from all and sundry. An acquaintance of my grandpa plays matchmaker and, to may consternation, calls is social service. He even maintains a database of the eligible men and women he knows in his little black diary and graying head. A few weeks ago he fired his first salvo at me."You see, he is a son of member of the Legislative Assembly. About to get his MBA. They are very rich. So, what do you think?"I'd have replied in irritation that I wasn't game for such arbitrary suggestions but my curiosity was piqued. With a little probing I discovered the 'eligibility criterion'."You see, he wants a short bride. He is just 5 feet 2 inches tall.""In that case I don't fit the bill", I replied with a sly grin, "I am five three, you see."
