Chile: Protest murder of forestry worker
2007-05-11 18:07:00 The Building and Woodworkers International (BWI) has received shocking news from its affiliated trade union, the Chile Forest ry Workers Federation (CTF). Rodrigo Alexis Cisternas, a 26-year-old subcontracted forestry worker, was shot dead by police on Thursday night (3 May) whilse taking part in the ongoing forestry strike in Concepción. The CTF reports that more than 7,000 subcontracted workers of Bosques Arauco have been on strike since early May after their demand for a monthly raise of US$38 was rejected. Most forestry workers in Chile have basic salaries of under US$100 a month. Around 2,000 workers from the wood/pulp-processing plant blocked traffic on the main road on Thursday night. The police attacked using tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets in an attempt to intimidate and disperse the striking workers. 2007-05-10 19:44:00 Three new album are just downloaded in my iPod for listening. The first is Baby 81 with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club . I like this band and listened a lot on their last album. But after listened a lot I got sort of bored of their style so I pick them away from my iTunes. The new album seem to be very heavy, with speedy songs. I suppose I should not have read any reviews before I listened to it. In most of the Swedish newspapers this album - Baby 81 - got the mark 3, and that is somewhere in the middle.The musicwriter in Svenska Dagbladet says they are to ambitious. And tell who: who can resist a band with the name Manic Street Preachers and an album tiht the title: Send away the tigers? I could not. In one Swedish newspaper the musicwriter said this album is alright but the soloalbum last year with James Dean Bradfield, the singer, was so much better. Comparisons are made with previous reports made in 1988, 1993, 1998 and 2002. The possibility to take five minutes’ rest from work without asking for permission is a matter of course for many employees. But almost a third of the LO women cannot do that compared to only six per cent of the TCO men (white-collar workers) and SACO men (academics). Only 28 per cent of the LO women and 41 per cent of the LO men are allowed leave of absence for one hour without having the wage deducted while more than 65 per cent of the TCO and SACO men have that privilege. Only 18 per cent of the LO women have health care free of charge while around 40 per cent of the other groups have this privilege. 2007-04-09 15:38:00 Living two adults and two teenagers in an apartment: after some years there are a lot of stuff. This Easter my husband, my sons and I have rearranged the furniture. It started with a new tv, we bought a week ago. Thats a wonderful tv: widescreen and thin. Suddenly the old way we placed the furniture did not fit at all. It has been as a sort of zen practise, a meditation to sort out things we dont use and make more free spaces in the rooms. Now, after, it feels as having cleaned the area there I live and as have got more cleas sight. As a very practical meditation in real life. After two very busy days I am rather exhausted, so I lay down some hours and enjoyed our new tv. I was to exhausted for looking at a film so I have the music-channel VH1 on. Now I found out more information about this band from The Independent: Morrissey may have hogged the headlines since the Smiths split in 1987 but this week Johnny Marr is celebrating a triumph that his former bandmate has never savoured. Working with his new band, the indie rockers Modest Mouse, the guitarist has gone straight to the top of the America n album charts with We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. It is the first time Marr has had a No 1 record in the States and We Were Dead... has also topped the iTunes download chart and the Amazon chart. The album will be released in the UK next week. 2007-03-21 20:29:00 ETUC, European Trade Union Confederation, launches a petition on public services.For a number of years, the European Commission has pursued a policy of market-opening to create competition and a free market. Often, liberalisation has had the effect of replacing single, public monopolies with a large group of private quasi-monopolies. Furthermore, such liberalisation has reduced the accessibility and sometimes the quality of public services, and has not benefited consumers. For example, the Commission has adopted a series of measures to bring about the progressive liberalisation of postal services. It has just taken a further step towards total liberalisation, opening these services up to free competition from 1 January 2009, without bothering to safeguard a universal service, accessible to all.
