John Edwards channel dominates YouTube among candidates
2007-03-15 03:23:00 During my visit in Washington DC in US I visited a campaign-meeting today with John Edwards , who is running a campaign for the Democratic nominee for the presidential election. Some say he is the candidate of the unions, because no one of the other candidates has that clearly taken stance for the unions and the workers right to collective agreement. He spoke about that today and about the health care. He is the only candidate talking for a system where everyone should be included. He is very interesting of a lot of reasons. He is outspoken about the climatethreat and about the war in Iraq. His campaign is really represented on the Internet. In YouTube John Edwards' channel has the most subscribers of any presidential candidate. Some facts about him from Wikipedia:Johnny Reid "John" Edwards (born June 10, 1953) was the Democratic nominee for Vice President in 2004, and a one-term U.S. Senator from North Carolina. Myself, I had to rush today to the bank before it closes at 3 pm.Is it just in Sweden the banks close that early every day? I had to rush there because my oldest son (he is 17) had booked tickets to the concert with Arcade Fire in Circus in Stockholm next week. Their new album - Neon Bible - seems to be liked of everyone. Grinderman - be sure it is noisy
2007-03-11 20:52:00 Nick Cave has created a new album together with three of his men from Bad Seeds: Martyn P. Casey, Jim Sclavunos och Warren Ellis. They call themselves Grin d erman and the album has the same title: Grinderman. One of the tracks is Get it on - which I think is also released as a single.Listen to it at the myspace-place of Grinderman. I am not sure wether Washington Post likes it or not:No, your earbuds aren't broken. That's just the sound of Nick Cave strangling a guitar and dragging his mangled riffs across across 2 1/2 minutes of broken-glass songcraft. The racket he's making with his new troupe here might be the harshest since his days with the Birthday Party. Anyhow, the Swedish music reporters seem to like it. Foul-mouthed, noisy, hairy, and damn well old enough to know better: Here is another noisy one. My definitive sign for springtime
2007-03-10 09:28:00 In the newspaper I read about people who have noticed cranes and people start to queuing for reparation of bicycles. Thats signs for the arrival of spring. Spring is a very special event for us in this northern part of the world. The winter was very long to mild. That gave us a strange feeling, that the threat of the climate really is a serious threat. But then the winter gave a bite of real coldness, and we forgot the climatechanges.(If you understand Swedish you can read about that here.) Well, I am aware that we have to do something around the world if we want to protect the earth for coming generations. But today I anyhow enjoy the wonderful arrival of the spring. The sun shines, the heaven is blue and it is not varm yet, but not cold any longer. And I went for the first walk in the forest this year. We have a special track in the forest outside. I walk along this path three-four times every week during spring and summer. It is still some snow there, but it is melting a... More About: Time , Springtime , Ring , Sign
Women trade unionists are under threat around the world
2007-03-09 22:43:00 Women trade unionists are under threat around the world, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. It is not easy being a woman trade unionist and a human rights defender in many parts of the world. Homepage for the British union Unison has an article about women in trade unions, struggling against the odds.Ask Leonora Castaño, president of a group promoting women's land and human rights in Colombia, or Dita Indah Sari, an Indonesian workers' rights activist. Their experiences are rarely reported in depth, but violence and human right abuse has a disproportionate impact on women and girls - in places like Colombia, Sudan, Congo, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe. In Zimbabwe, for example, activists like Thabita Khumalo constantly face the threat of violence when carrying out their union activities. Khumalo, the secretary of the women's advisory council of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union s, has been assaulted at all four ZCTU general council meetings this year. On 9 July this year, a g... Special coverage of women workers today
2007-03-08 07:05:00 Thursday, 8 March 2007 is International Women 's Day and we're delighted to take this opportunity to announce the launch of LabourStart's special coverage of women workers. Today you can read about -- * UK: Unions have warned that local councils may have to cut jobs as they struggle to meet a deadline to bring in equal pay -- including back pay for many thousands of women. * Australia: According to a new report issued this week by the Brussels-based International Trade Union Confederation, thanks to the Howard government's labour laws, not only is Australia at the bottom of the OECD countries in terms of workers' rights, but women workers are hardest hit. Since the introduction of anti-union legislation, women's wages have actually fallen by some two percent. * Turkey: Thousands of women marched -- supported by, among others, the petroleum workers union -- demanding peace and equality. Australia at the Bottom of the OECD on Workers’ Rights
2007-03-06 20:37:00 With the World Trade Organisation General Council assessing Australia ’s trade policies this week in Geneva, a new ITUC report highlights the negative impacts on the country’s workforce of the Government’s industrial relations laws, which impose heavy restrictions on internationally-recognised labour standards. From Homepage of International Trade Union Confederation. The report strongly criticises the Australian Government’s industrial relations laws (“Work Choices” Act), which makes Australia the only developed country where employers can refuse to negotiate with a union even when employees are union members and want their union to represent them. The report documents the severe legal limits that are imposed on the basic rights of Australian workers to organise in trade unions and the strict restrictions the laws place on the items that can be included in collective bargaining, in violation of International Labour Organisation standards which Australia has ratified. The fu... Patrick Wolf - The magic position - Impossible to categorise
2007-03-03 17:53:00 Patrick Wolf - how can this musician be categorized? Impossible. Popmusic, with eletronic and a lot of other influences, innovative indiepop. He is born 1983 and plays many instruments including harp, harpsichord, guitar, piano, autoharp, organ, theremin, ukulele, viola and violin. Already in the age of eleven did he record songs. His third album - Magic position - is newly released. BBC has a presentation of Patrick Wolf with a photo of him with his red hair (on the records before his hair had other colours, he seems to change colour of his hair with every new record).Commuting life into music since he was 12, Wolf sees composition as a “best friend”, a cathartic coping mechanism. “Instead of writing a diary or going to see a counsellor or taking anti-depressants, I’d write songs.” On forthcoming album, The Magic Position, he is joined by kindred spirits Marianne Faithful and Edward Larrikin for a gloriously overblown rumination on love in its spiritual, platonic, roman... Live forever - Magnus Carlsson - most sold right now
2007-02-28 20:13:01 Magnus Carl sson was supposed to be one of the artists in the finale round of the Swedish trial for Eurovision Song Contest. His song - Live forever - is a very typical Eurovision Song Contest-song in the Swedish way.I think the reason why people did vote for other songs is that a lot of us are bored of the glamourish style and we want more rocksongs, even in this ESC. In the tabloids they wrote a lot about how angry and disappointed Magnus Carlsson was that he did not go to the finale round. In tv some days after I heard some of his musiciancollegues that they had not seen him that angry. It was just the journalists who saw that, they said. By the way, he has got some sort of revenge: Today this song is the most bought and downloaded song in the Swedish iTunes-store. Australian workes call for help to win a collective agreement

It is operating under the new anti-union legislation recently passed in Australia, where individual contracts are favoured over collective bargaining. At certain major sites employees have been told that the company will not re-negotiate collective agreements with them. At other sites the company is seeking to weaken collective bargaining arrangements or is stalling negotiations.I read that on the homepage for Australian Manufacturing Work ers Union.Thales has pledged support for the United Nations' Global Compact, which includes a commitment to the "effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining".
