What we are doing today...

Guess where we are going today...Trinity's very first riding lesson!Trinity had a difficult time back in the hospital with the physical therapy. I remember it being the most difficult thing we had to do, because it was really uncomfortable for her to use her hand after the accident. Regardless, I knew that if we didn't do the rehab she wouldn't regain full mobility, and she had to do the exercises to stretch the skin while it grew back. A couple of the streches we did were...Pick up the ball, and making a tent stretches. Every day she had to use the hand more and more until it worked normally. One day, when she was having a hard time with therapy, I remembered that she has a fascination with horses, and if she were ever going to ride one, she would have to be able to use both hands. I reminded her that if her hands were going to get better so she could ride, she had to work for it. It kept her going.Today , we get to see how we did. I am excited for her, and I promised her I'd ta...

Trinity Modeling...
2007-12-17 19:12:00
Apparently, Trinity wants to become a runway model.Right... This recent career choice influence was brought on by watching about ten minutes of Americas Next Top Model. My mistake. Not that Trin isn't "model" material, but I think with the scars she would probably be better off shooting photography than posing. I told her she should take photography classes if she wants to get into the field. What do you think? What would you encourage her to do?She has a disturbing fascination with striking a pose.

Today, I realized that Trinity has gotten a heck of a lot of support from y'all, and I am so glad she had you thinking of her.I couldn't have lived through this stuff without her strength either, but it was really her attitude that kept me going.A couple nights ago at the dinner table, Donny prayed for the poor to have food, and clothes, and a car, and a house, etc. (He's six now, so the world has gotten a little bigger.)And Trinity said thank you to God for her hand healing. She started talking about how awful it was, and then she said, "But it's okay, because good things are happening too."So I took the bait, and asked her "Like what?"She said, "Getting burned made it easier for me to talk to God."Blew me away.I guess she figures it's good to pray for others now, since everyone prayed for her.You should see the kind of things she comes up with too. Turkeys for the homeless on Thanksgiving, or for her friends to get good grades, or people in India to make more money. How does sh...

Article hereI am amazed to see how many people go to great lengths to avoid having scars on their skin. I understand the reason, after the incident back in February with the rude lady and Trin..."She actually stuck her head down at Trinity's arm level and stared at her for a few seconds. Then she picked her head up and exclaimed to the woman with her, "I was just looking at that little girls hand!" She made a disgusted face and walked away."Things like that make people hate the way the look. It's not that they are different, we all have scars. Just the fact that it is easy for people to be jerks about it 'cause of the eww factor. That's stupid.Next time you see someone who looks different, just say "hi" if they catch you staring on accident. Really it's ok to just be nice. Smiles are universal.

I thought it was about time that I jump back on here and give you all an update.Trinity is good.A lot has happened, but the most important thing I have to say is...It healed. How cool is that? She still has a scar on her wrist, but other than that everything looks 100% again. The whole palm of her hand grew back, the skin on her arm grew back, and it looks just fine.Everyone kept telling us it was just a matter of time until it healed, and we are finally there.Thank you for your prayers. I know they helped, as well as the gifts sent to Trinity. She had no idea how many wonderful people there are out there. It wasn't easy getting her through all of this, but for all the blessings we have, we thank God.

Chocolate makes you sick!

The kids got their easter baskets this year, and they were filled with goodies.Donny ate all of his candy on Easter Day.He felt awful.I love my son, but this time around, I had to let him learn why its not a good idea to eat so much candy. I didn't say anything, so he ate the whole basketful. We had dinner on Tuesday night (two days later), and when I told him "We've got MandMs for desert." He cringed. Then he said politely, "No, thank you."It was SO cool!

Nightmares?
2007-04-05 20:24:00
I know for sure Trin is having problems sleeping, since there have been times she is still awake at 11 o' clock at night. A couple days ago, when I asked her why she was still up, she said it was because she "was scared." I asked her why she would be scared, and she said "I don't wanna get burned." She was half awake, so I don't know if its dreams, or anxiety in general.Judging by her actions, I think she is developing some insecurity about the world around her. (Could it be post traumatic stress... finally?)I think she has mostly healed physically, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's time to cope mostly with her emotions now. That's usually how it goes in my experience.I think the insomnia is stemming from her worrying too much about what could happen to her, and I was hoping someone out there might know of a good routine I can borrow to help her relax at night? I know thinking about things is not helping her get the rest she needs.Several of the readers on this blog that have...

FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH BURNS
2007-04-03 23:38:00
This article is from MADD online. I found it helpful, and I hope you will too:"The love a parent has for their child is special. Parents want to care for their child, to solace them, and to help them find happiness. Parents feel their child's joy and find it almost intolerable to see a child in pain yet be unable to help. In no other relationship is the protective urge as intense or compelling as in the parent/child relationship. When a child sustains a burn injury, it is not uncommon for parents to feel extremely guilty for what has happened. Feelings of guilt, sadness, anger, and rage are all to be expected. However, if parents harbor inappropriate feeling of guilt, they may inadvertently encourage helplessness and dependence in their child. When a child experiences a traumatic event, he or she is likely to regress or exhibit other undesired behaviors. When parents establish limits while offering love and support, the child burn victim/survivor is empowered to thrive, in spite of ...

Pink and Blue Compression Gloves!
2007-03-30 20:43:00
Dave took Trin to get her new compression gloves this morning. They are really cool. She has a light pink one, and a bright blue one, and they fit her perfectly. The representative fitted her for them a few weeks ago, and it looks like they did well. She chose to wear the pink one first, (no, surprise there) but its really cool, because they even have a little zipper on the top of the hand so we can get them on properly. She will have to wear them for about a year, so it's really important that she likes them. She hated the temporary glove, because in order to get the finger size right they had to give her a smaller glove, and it partially cut off the circulation to her fingers a couple times and made her fingers turn blue. It was scary, but she had to wear it.She hasn't complained about itching, so the regular applications of lotion is working. (She is really good about putting it on.) The skin isn't flaking off anymore, I know that was weird for her too. She complained about it ...

I caught Trinity singing again, only this time, she was playing guitar too. I am convinced she is a natural born performer. Anyone know how to get her an audition with Disney? She wants to be like Hillary Duff, and have her own T.V. show. The sad part is... I believe she could do it.So, I suppose I ought to get her some singing lessons soon. Or at least a better guitar now that I have heard her playing the cheap one she has.

It's me again. I just wanted to say that I have been moderating this blog for a couple months now, and It occurred to me that I never really talk about myself. So, rather than wasting space on here, I have returned to blogging on my personal blog again, (in addition to this) and encourage you to take a peek if you want to see what I am planning on publishing this year.jewelciappio.blogspot.comJewel's Blog explains all of the things I went through as a kid, and why I have no choice but to be supportive of Trinity. I require myself to give all I have, because I won't live my life knowing I could have done more. If I knew this back then, I'd have been there for myself too. J/K.

Trinity's Birthday
2007-03-20 18:36:00
Things have been kinda busy, so I haven't had the chance to write about Saturday, so here it goes...Friday night, Donny made Trinity ' cake. It was strawberry inside, and had white frosting, with her name in pink. He loves food, so I figured it made sense for him to be the honorary cake baker. We ate the cake on Saturday, and Trinity danced around the house for a while in her new gypsy costume, and then we went to the reniassance festival. Trinity got a bow and three arrows. Donny got a dagger and a tabbard, and we drank lots and lots of fluids because it was 100 degrees outside. Trinity went on the jousting ride. She rode the pink pony, and I think she had a pretty good day. She opened all her presents from everyone. Thank you to everyone who sent her gifts, I had no idea we have so many friends, you all are so wonderful. Also, Trin didn't really even notice her hand at all. She was so wrapped up in her gypsiness, I don't think she had time.

How cute are they? This was taken at the last Nero day event. If you look closely you can see the compression glove Trin's wearing. It didn't seem to bother her much to be out and about with friends. She even snuck into the tavern, (in game) and stole most of the players weapons before someone caught her. (Photo courtesy of Lindsey.)

Gifted testing
2007-03-14 17:13:00
Yesterday when Trinity came home from school, she gave us (Dave and I) a recommendation form from her teacher to be tested for the "gifted" program at her school. We are inclined to let her participate in this because as far as we know a gifted teacher will be giving her an opportunity to learn in ways that she wouldn't have been able to in her regular class. Trinity has always been above average in everything for her grade. I just hope I can continue to challenge her so she doesn't get tired of learning the same old stuff.

Gish
2007-03-13 23:51:00
I had the fortune of meeting Edmund Mcmillen in High School. I must say, he was a fantastic artist, even back then. Lately, the animated game he developed has been getting plenty of publicity, but in case you haven't heard about it yet, I thought I'd put up a quick link. You can get it at Chronic Logic here or at Garage Games here and it won't cost you nearly as much as it is worth. The graphics are awesome, and the character is oddly endearing. I'm sure it will occupy your enertainment lust for at least a week. Also you are required to take a look at the recent artwork he has done. Follow this link: Cerebral Discharge to his personal art blog. I command you!Gametunnel.com says: Rating - 10/10"Without a doubt Gish is one of the best games that has come out in a long time and it easily becomes the first game of 2004 that we award a 10."How cool is that?

Huge amounts of thank you's go out to Iron Leige for holding a raffle for Trinity. Greg is a true artist, and friend. It's not too late to get in on the raffle, and have a chance to win one of these truly amazing designs. The sword pictured here is an example of the kind of detail they put into each and every design. Please check out www.IronLeige.com to see other incredible latex weapons that Greg and his team design and create by hand.We at NERO have been using the Iron Leige weapons for our NPCs, and they have greatly added to the ambiance of the game for our players. They have been in use at our chapter for over 2 years now, and have retained their integrity better than any other weapons I have seen. The Iron Leige weapons look very realistic, and are very comfortable to carry.(Trinity played with one of these all day at the campout because she can carry them around so easily.)*All proceeds of the raffle (weapons were kindly donated) are going to pay for Trinity's recovery. Medical supplies

I never really kept exam gloves around the house prior to the campfire accident, but I would recommend it now. You never know when something is going to be gross enough that you don't want to touch it, or if someone will need a bandage prepared, it usually comes without warning. (Plus, I like to inflate them, and make roosters, and elephants for the kids.) You can pick up a lot of medical related items at rockbottomprices.com. These gloves are only $3.83 with a club membership. I recommend signing up for a membership all the time, because I have searched their prices, and they really do offer their products for a lot less. If you are thinking about signing up, use the rockbottom link on my page and they will donate money for Trinity's burn camp trip. They sponsor this site too, if you are interested in sponsorship. Really good people.

Compression glove
2007-03-08 17:49:00
In order for Trinity to have less scaring from the burn, we have to make her wear a compression glove. It's kind of like a thick nylon stocking that slips over the fingers, hand, and forearm. It's meant to hold the skin in place to reduce the raised scars that often form after a bad burn. She hates it. She said she would rather live with the scars, (but then again, she is only six) The skin is peeling off right now, like it does when you have a bad sunburn that is healed, and the flakes of skin make her itch like crazy. I'm starting to worry about it, because she isn't getting enough sleep at night between the itching and falling asleep on her arm on accident.

Burn Unit
2007-03-06 23:58:00
This book is available at rockbottomprices.com for $10.17. It talks about a lot of the things people go through when experiencing a severe burn. I really hope we never have to do this again, but it might be a good thing to keep around for people who want to know how difficult the process of being burned is. A lot of people don't understand that when you get burned you go through stages. It initially gets worse and worse as the minutes pass, and days later starts to heal. The people at the burn unit here in Phoenix were awesome. I strongly recommend looking for charity work at your local hospital. Even you will benefit emotionally from helping out where you can. Ask your local hospital if you can contribute in anyway. Teach people how to write songs and sing them, or even sew some quilts for the babies there. The things people did for us will never be forgotten, and neither will the help you can give to others.

Trinity goes back to school
2007-03-05 23:27:00
Trinity went to school today. She finally gets to start living a normal life again. She wrote down a list of things she's afraid of. Here was the conversation I had with her at midnight last night after seeing her list."What if people are afraid of my hand, and won't play with me?" She said."What are you afraid they will say?""Your hand looks funny." She said."What can you tell them?""Well, I could say... "you have funky hair, but I still play with YOU."I explained to her that she doesn't care if other people are different, so she shouldn't have to worry so much about how she looks. Good friends don't care what you look like, they like you for you. We'll see how she does today.

God, you are always with us, and although you give us knowledge, and hope, sometimes we have a little difficulty learning how to receive what you are saying. Please help us keep our eyes, and our ears, and most importantly, our hearts, open to the love and the guidance you offer for all of us.Please let the works you have planned for us inspire others to come to you, for strength and courage. Please be with the lost, help them find their way back as soon as they are ready. And tell all everyone we know in heaven, that we still have a little work to do, but we will see them when we are done.Amen.

Good Grief!
2007-03-02 08:20:00
We removed all the dead skin cells from Trinity's fingernails tonight. They look a lot better now. I am hoping that the doctor says she can go back to school soon. She was really upset tonight (threw a tantrum) because she wants to see her friends again. She kept crying about how things are too different now, and I let her be upset for about a half hour before having a serious conversation with her about her feelings. I told her that it's always her right to be upset if she wants to, but if she spends too much time feeling sorry for herself, then she going to miss out on the good stuff in life. We spent some time staring at her hand before I wrapped it back up, and I finally convinced her that its her hand, and she should stop treating it like it's not a part of her anymore, because even the the feelings she has about what it looks like are her feelings. It's time to take care of all of her now... including the sad parts.
