i fell into radio broadcasting by accident, and it was all because of irma.a glib comment to my then newly-acquainted "hot mummer" friend about being mentioned once on the radio, for which she volunteers, back when i was in high school inevitably saw me joining her in the radio booth about to embark on my first ever broadcasting stint. it was a nerve-wracking experience which saw my voice crack several times on air and my face remaining the colour of fuschia for the whole show. but boy, it was heaps of fun.more than a year later, and i'm still having an absolute blast, and still getting those flutters in the stomach just before air-time. my voice doesn't crack anymore, though. if anything, i probably talk too much.below is my latest article in the philippine times newspaper, which profiles the sunday program, pinoy kampus radio, and the broadcasters that make up the show. The Bungisngisan Hour:Giggles with the Pinoy Kampus Radio CrewRyan PerdioIt takes a certain kind of individual ...

"the boy has grown."says a nearby patron as we all expectantly look up to see eran james enter the room. i pause between mouthfuls of my delicate seafood pasta to observe the soul and blues crooner make his way across the candlelit space, past the dining area to the stage. he's taller, broadly shouldered, with light stubble covering his face. a body more like a man than an eighteen-year old. he doesn't walk but saunters."is that him?," asks jenni, pointing discretely with her eyes."yep, the one and only."it's late wednesday evening and the two of us are enjoying wine with a generous degustation dinner in the the cool intimate interiors of the manchester lane bar. away from the warm confines of home, braving what must be the coldest night of the year, we aren't the only ones to do so. many others are seated around the room, some still snugly bundled up in their typically melbourne black winter woolies. they're here to hear eran sing.it's the boy's final show in one of the city...

i can't seem to play the sleep deprivation game very well anymore. i just don't bounce back as well as i used to. it's now monday night and i'm still recovering from a very long weekend.why is it that you actually feel fine waking up from only four hours sleep but a hell of a lot worse when you've had the proper eight-hour stretch the night afterwards? i felt like a truck had run me over when i woke up this morning.my friends keep saying it's because i'm getting old. mind you, they're actually much older than i am. in their 40s. ancient.but i guess there are some truths in what they say. i am closer to thirty than twenty. in fact, i'm closer to being thirty than being twenty-five! i find that somewhat scary.drinksit all happened on saturday when i had to get up very early to go to work's long-overdue first aid training refresher.8am. never mind saving someone's life. get me coffee, stat.training then turned to real work and before i knew it, twelve hours have passed. over...

tanks fly, helicopters fall from the sky, booming explosions and metal on metal carnage. so opens the much-anticipated big screen adaptation of every 80s child favourite afternoon cartoon, transformers: the movie.and even before this hardware technophile's wet dream reaches the end of its exciting teaser opening, the audience is already sold on three things: one, the wait has been worth it; two, this is going to be one hell of a ride; and three, that this is quite positively, the year's best blockbuster film. the plot is simple: the eternal battle between two robotic clans, the heroic autobots and the evil decepticons, re-erupts on earth leaving the fate of mankind hanging in the balance. a classic storyline of good versus evil that the script thankfully sticks faithfully to, deviating only slightly to bring it up to the present. and how funny! a pleasant surprise, this is one witty script with the laughs as plenty as the action sequences.blockbuster-meister, michael bay, has been...

2007-07-13 01:34:00
here's the thing: you know you're on a sure winner with a harry potter movie, just as it is guaranteed that everyone will go out and see it. it's money you can take to the bank. but there's just something about this chapter of the boy wizard's ongoing fantastical saga that makes it noticeably different - and not in the most positive of ways - when stacked up against the rest in the series.and how? because of one simple, albeit fundamental, reason: the brevity in adaptation.making harry jump from the printed page up on the big screen will always be a huge challenge, and whilst previous directors have had varying degrees of success in their respective attempts, david yates makes short work of the fifth instalment. literally. clocking in at just under 140 minutes, harry potter and the order of the phoenix is by no big stretch, the shortest of all movies, despite of the book being the longest out of all that are currently published.in this chapter, harry must not only face the evil...

ne regrette rien (do not regret anything)

if the measure of a movie can be judged by the immediate reaction of its viewers, then a fellow patron summed it best with a single word: wow!the man's loud proclamation to the otherwise quiet and dimly lit cinema, being bathed in the glow of the rolling end credits on screen, was in response to la môme, the french biographical film based on edith piaf.piaf was france's greatest torch song chanteuse. an incomparable artiste, she lived her life with as much passion as she did when singing her evocative music, world-renowed signature songs such as la vie en rose and non, je ne regrette rien. in this movie, her tumultuous and fascinating life is explored on screen from her days as a forgotten child of a struggling street singer, living in her grandmother's brothel when she was barely ten years old, to the early beginnings of her career as a songstress and inevitable rise as one of modern times' enduring diva.spanning from 1915 to her death in 1963, piaf's tale is told in a non-lin...

but have you got kids yet?
2007-07-07 09:35:00
last night, braving the chilly weather and with my mum in tow, i headed into town to attend a promotional event being run in association with the radio station i broadcast for.sitti navarro, a relatively unknown (at least locally) female artist from the philippines, crossed the eight hour divide to entertain the masses with her bossa nova stylings. the mid-20s beauty was delightfully entertaining and engaging as she sang her way through a gamut of cool-as-jazz standards and hot-and-wild samba tunes. her style of music, new to my ears, was well received by a crowd usually deprived of such delights. so inclusive was her appeal that the age of the punters spanned from the bagets (the young'ns) to the forgets (the young at hearts). the latter, though, outnumbering the former by a big margin.before the start of the evening entertainment, during the more-than-usually loud pre-event mingling and shoulder rubbing, my mum spotted a couple of familiar faces. standing near us were two acquain...

melbourne bloggers meet, episode 4: a new hope
2007-07-05 08:57:00
although the third one was a bit of a fizzer - okay, a total flop - like the sleazy guy you keep knocking back at the bar, the melbourne bloggers meet is back for another go.now on for the fourth time, the humble blog-and-meet is going international. with similar events happening in sydney, brisbane, and even in the u.k., this one is being touted as a competition between melbourne and sydney. seems dup and nssg have the need to work something out of their systems. frustrated much? kidding.seriously, this is simply the perfect opportunity to meet the bloggers you've had the pleasure of reading and knowing only in print, and, of course, a great excuse to drink and get suitably lubricated. it's all good.here are the details:where: melbourne central lion hotellevel 3, right near the escalators, next to hoyts box officewhen: sunday, 29th julytime: from 3pmhow to spot the group: look out for the logoso, if you are interested in joining what is sure to be an enjoyable and interesting su...

he ain't heavy, he's my little brother (1)
2007-07-05 03:39:00
i make no apologies for the philosophical and idealised tone of this post. this is dedicated to rj.* * *just as cain was about to strike down his brother, abel, i wonder whether the anger that consumed him was momentarily eclipsed by the love and respect that he had once shared with his sibling. no one would ever know, i guess, but i'd like to think that he did, even for the briefest of moment, before things became so violently ugly.in a far less dramatic fashion, i have been thinking about the tumultuous relationship i've had with my own brother.rj is nine years younger than i am, and growing up, the considerable age gap between the two of us had often ensured that our interaction was that of older sibling to a younger one. in fact, when not playing the role of his kuya (older brother), i was a de facto parent.from a stinky crying baby to a headstrong teenager, i watched him grow. i took care of him when our parents were too busy to do so. changed his nappies, fed him and even ba...
