Winter and Spring
2008-04-18 05:08:00
There's a worldwide rice shortage, a result of half-a-decade of drought. With global warming here, I figure I might as well record the change of seasons while there still is a change in seasons.Upstate New York: a photo-study of abackyard in a commuter suburb.

Fit for News

My friend, one of my bestest friends actually, almost always have some news to share with me. Sometimes exciting, sometimes simply surprising, sometimes disturbing, sometimes depressing, but always so intimate; in that a select few, myself fortunately included, are made privy too.Today she sends me an email. She's become an avid cyclist, with a scheduled bike tour to boot. She hasn't gotten around to naming the thing yet, but I'm pretty sure I can convince her to go with "Big Bright Blue" (not to mention "Bicycle").

Barred Owl

She was rescued by some people. She was found on the road, had probably been hit by a car. Brought to the vet's office and received much-needed care she began to recover. But upon the day of her release, the vet noticed something odd: she didn't take flight. He surmised that the accident caused her to be blind and thus unable to hunt for herself in the wild. Reluctant to euthanize her, he's training her to be hand-fed and hopes that a bird sanctuary or private owners will take her in and care for her.
Pet Shoppe
2008-01-21 18:02:00
A friend, captivated by these two beauties, captured them in digital film. The turtles grew up in a pet store; used to being around humans, they didn't mind a petting scratch on their heads or under their chins. Don't be fooled though, they're massive in size and weight.
34th Street Penn Station
2008-01-11 21:30:00
I missed my train home yesterday, just as rush hour began to wane. Stupid me, I stood behind a pillar and missed the alert displaying the departure track. But at least good music abound. This band I think was named Jet and Ret or Jed and Rhet...not quite sure. But they sported really long, gravity-defying hair and even better music.Once I was passing through the celestial and chandeliered halls of 42nd Street /Grand Central Station while the NY Transit was holding auditions for the subway's slew of singers and performers; and I was amazed at the queue: a punk-rock teen Japanese band, a string quartet, and a patient guy with a harmonica.Kudos NY Transit on the auditory quality control. I was displeased at missing my train, but was duly pacified and lulled by the band.

Greenhouse Effect
2008-01-11 20:47:00
Even with abnormally high temperatures this winter, most flowers still have the good sense to stay underground and wait for true spring. But this sign of intrinsic, natural intelligence deprives one of the scent and scene of a garden in colorful bloom. Missing the sight, I started creating a garden indoors, where the temperature is temperate all year round and rain pours consistently out of a watering can.*The digital portraits of the African violets are currently MIA, I can't seem to capture them in decent enough light.

Black Fur and a Can of Tuna
2008-01-02 05:33:00
This black cat has frequented our house since my family moved here two years ago. The first year she came with a small kitten, a daughter who in the next year visited with her own litter of three. This past summer, I remember seeing her for the first time in a long while. She looked emaciated and tired; thinning areas on her back showed white against the black of her fur. I worried she had fought a fight, with either feline or canine, she could not win.Fortunately my parents, for an unknown reason, always have in stock cans of tuna. Tuna , I believe, replenishes a cat's nine lives. The potent elixir did her much good, and soon she began to put on weight and gradually her ebony coat grew back.A keen huntress, I had seen her crouch in wait and spring in surprise attack at the backyard squirrels and birds. She's managed to survive as a stray in a forest of houses, cars, and pavement. I hope I did enough to assure she lives out her remaining lives.

About a month ago, can't quite remember when, on a grey afternoon just after work, I went to the Museum of American Illustration on East 63rd Street. It was a wonderful experience: artful and playful...lively renditions of the world of childhood.

An Autumn Wedding
2007-12-26 21:17:00
This past October, we attended a friend's wedding in Lynchburgh, Virginia. Actually, the ceremony was held in one Rustburgh, Virginia. Never been that far South, this Northerner looked forward to the culture clash. Either I stayed in too much, or most of the people I talked with at the wedding were Yankees to be begin with. So fortunately, and uninterestingly, there wasn't much to note concerning human interactions. The Blue Ridge Mountains more than made up for it though.

Columbus Square looks like a Circle
2007-09-24 02:29:00
'Tis Columbus Square on 59th Street West Side, where Central Park starts its 800-acre sprawl. Here I am enjoying the sights like a regular tourist, aboard an uptown bus.The subway is awfully efficient in speed and stations, but buses, if one has the time, offer the most in visual interest. This Square after sunset is a favorite tryst spot of couples. We came one warm night to enjoy the fountains and light. But it's hard to relax when two people a mere seat away from you are both trying really hard to suck each others mouths off.Ah well, amour.

A Toe Tells the World To F* Off

That's my friend. Well, the owner of the exposed toe is my friend. The toe, well I guess we're friends, since I'm friend with the possessor of said toe. There it is. Solely exposed, its other mates snug inside socks and padded well by slippers.A well-manicured toe, expressing its friggin' displeasure with the world.

Ladies who Brunch
2007-09-24 01:24:00
Lo-res captures of Bethesda Fountain in Central Park. The Lake lies quietly behind it, a thoroughfare for row boats lazily passing by. Just right across the street from Bethesda Fountain is The Mall and Literary Walk. When we passed by this Saturday, there was an international peace rally. The rain that hounded much of the morning pit-pattered to a stop; just enough time for my friend and I to make a determined dash for the West Side 72nd St. subway station.Of course, in central park, a magical place, the rat race simmers down to a slow, ambling pace.Saturday plans had included brunch at The Boathouse then renting bikes for a self-led park tour. The day dawned at 9:30 for us, groggy inside our heads and cloudy outside. But warm and sunny enough that we convinced ourselves out of carrying an umbrella.C train dropped us off at 72nd Central Park West.On the way to the Boathouse we passed by "the" guy arranging flowers around John Lennon's Imagine; sat on benches and admired a Japanese ...

A Meeting of Trees
2007-09-21 06:41:00
The nice thing about any well-planned cosmopolitan city is just that...a metropolis of options available conveniently. In a space of an island and a few hours I completed an appointment, bought groceries, finished homework, clothes-shopped, cooked, went out to help choose pinot noir, and stopped by to get milk for tea.I've been to a few places now, scattered around the globe, and very few offer the range a major city can.NYC isn't perfect by far, but it comes pretty close when it comes to choices...well, materialistic at least.I was standing on the platform at 42nd and Times Square, waiting for 1 train uptown, and I smell H2o mist in the air. I tuned my senses and heard the hiss of high-pressured water forced down on cement. I caught, for the very first time, actual cleaning of the subway; I mean, I've managed to stay out late enough to know that garbage trains putter along the tracks early, early AM to collect the trash the New York's mass humanity can generate within daytime ho...

An Arc in the Sky

So here I am shutter-happy recording every strand, it ought to last me during the gloom of winter.Seasonal depression aside, autumn garbs herself splendid , pulling an arsenal of hues a pop-diva/aristo/goddess would envy.

Strangely Out of Place
2007-09-15 02:00:00
Thursday was too good to be true. First a restful sleep, then a slow wake to mid-morning; the sky a penultimate summer blue with the autumn wind doing much to soothe the sun's overly cheerful stare.Drove to the airport, crossed the security checkpoint, which involved the unavoidable "take-off your shoes" mandate, then jet-propelled into the aforementioned sky; all normal for a day of travel. The scheduled 50 odd minutes from PIT to JFK airports, a promised mere blink in modern transportation. The dark and light green delineations on the brown earth marked farms, houses mere dots on a real-time map, the veins of paved roadways goose-bumped with slow-moving cars; feet firmly on the ground, an apt statement for one's awareness of reality and the boundaries of terra firma, accepting the limitations that one cannot fall out of the world, it having no end.But at 31 odd thousand feet above ground, one becomes suddenly aware that yes, even in a sphere, it is possible to reach an end and fa...

a re-established New Yorker visits Pittsburgh
2007-09-10 17:22:00
Back in Pittsburg h for a week-long visit. When I was here last, Spring had just begun. The Steelers had not made a dent in the football season. I had left for good.My Jet Blue flight involved an empty seat to my left, a window to my right, and beyond the window hung the clouds: white and serene, looking down the green grey haze below. The XM satellite video channels weren't working, so I audio-browsed; but I soon gave up as frequent, ear-splitting announcements broke through the headphones: "thank you for flying Jet Blue"..."a snack of crackers and a choice of soda or water will soon be served. thank you for choosing to fly Jet Blue"..."the seat-belt sign will soon be turned off as soon as our captain reaches the altitude of 26,000 feet. we hope you enjoy the flight, please remain seated until the sign is turned off. and thank you for flying Jet Blue"A mere hour of flight from JFK in NY to Pittsburgh Airport. It would have taken about 9 hours driving by car or riding the Amtrak trai...

a New York frame of mind

It's a unique view of the Manhattan skyline via the Long Island Expressway near exit 15 to Queensboro Bridge.Hidden among the glitz and glamour and under the dirt and grime of New York City, are the people: New Yorkers, the apple-core of this cosmopolitan city.Bon voyage to D & A who, as I type, are on their way to a two-week back-packing tour of Europe.

a Cat counts her Nine lives
2007-08-11 18:42:00
This summer lazes on, although Wednesday got off on the wrong foot and Papa found himself rerouting on parkways and highways, desperately maneuvering his way back home. The rain caused havoc on the daily commute; commuter tracks were delayed or whole lines canceled altogether, and flooding caused roadway shutdowns.Unless memory served you right, you would have doubted such a day ever occurred when Thursday rolled in; all bright sun, blue skies, and pleasant breeze. A hammock strung between two oak trees in the backyard dispelled the grey of yesterday. A late lunch of whole wheat pasta and homemade meatball tomato sauce, toasted artisan bread with goat cheese, and chilled sweetened milk tea sat weighed down our bellies.Friday came cloudy and rain-laden. Three of us braved the chill and drizzle and headed off to shop for clothing bargains and checked off the grocery list. We came away with $11-$15 pants that originally cost $60-$80, and T-shirts for 3 dollars. We made like robbers, gr...

A Month at Least
2007-08-04 02:04:00
It's been over a month since my last post, and I swear I have better excuses than procrastination and laziness. Nothing's coming to mind at the moment.A month's quite a long time, even in the grand scheme of universal happenings. Human measurements are bound and limited in our finite imagination and mortality; the passage of time hanging on to every hurried breath.Let's see: went to Dorney Park in a rickety van and had a rambunctious time: lost half of our friends for about two hours, went to almost all the scary rides, had loads of unhealthy, overpriced food, and saw someone get arrested, saw someone that should have been arrested, and witnessed a woman in hysterics after losing her young children and then finding out nearly 15 minutes later that they were next to her all this time enjoying the merry go round.Saw Harry Potter the Order of the Phoenix in Times Square after a late dinner at Hell's Kitchen's mouth-watering hole, Island Burger. Enjoyed grilling our own meats at...
