The Logo Quiz
2007-11-03 12:00:00
I usually don’t post stuff like this, but it was hard to pass up this one. The test is simple, you just have to name the logo. I’m sure you’ve seen them around during your daily commute or online forays so it’s all going to be a matter of recall. I found it a ...

UPM E - semifinalists, UP Intervarsities 2007 Since I’m a med student from some med school in the Philippines, I’m constantly pestered with questions regarding why I continue to compete as a debater and remain active in the collegiate debating scene. Some of them even go as far as asking why I didn’t pursue ...

The PMA Nationals Experience Through Pictures
2007-10-31 05:17:00
As expected, days at the Philippine Milit ary Academy start early in the morning. B reakfast was distributed  as soon as contingents were shuttled to Fort Gregorio del Pilar.   UP Manila has always been a happy conting ent outside of the rounds. In this shot, (2nd row) you’ll see debate dinosaurs Robin Lucas, Adrian Rabe with current org Prime Minister Ciacia Fa ctor and upstart Robert Totanes. Foreground: Aya Bautista and my teammate  James Salisi.   Sometimes, bad rounds are just too much t o bear. Here, I share an emo moment with  UPM D (Aya and Justin Rivera). Notice the Ahmadinejad-inspired getup?   Meet Mr. Star! James drew this on his han d after round 5 as a lucky charm. Haha. I t sure worked!   UPM A- UP Manila’s top breaking tea m at thirteenth spot with  14 points. Hi Poyt~!   One half of UPM D and one half of UPM B - both made it to the breaks. Congrats Aya!  More break night fun!   More pictures soon! :) Take care.   Here’...

The Post Mortem: The PMA National Debate Championships
2007-10-30 10:33:00
I wanted to blog everyday during the tournament, but as luck would have it, there was just not enough time to log on at the end of the long days of competition. The Philippine Military Academy put together what could easily be the best competition the local debate community has seen in terms of logistics. ...

National Debate Championship [Day 0]
2007-10-22 18:08:00
We’re now at Baguio City! The UP Manila contingent is currently billeted at the Inn Rocio, a not-so-cozy but not-so-ghetto hotel. There’s free WiFi. Tsk. I didn’t bring my laptop. I’m currently using Myke’s tablet. That’s all for now. I’ll be posting tweets as the tournament progresses. Take care. Reason above all. Benj of Atheista.net ...

2007-10-18 16:17:00
The Philippine Blogging Community has successfully transformed a vibrant network of webpages and journals into even livelier off-line blogger meetups and events. You can’t really compete with parties. The once faceless bloggers get a chance to pick their best shirt and make a strong and hopefully positive impression with the other once mysterious personas ...

It’s always fun to go to parties and just socialize with the other guests. It’s quite easy to make people leave their couches and beds on any given weekend if they’re promised a good meal, freebies and few drinks. It’s not a no-brainer really - most bloggers work and go to school for five ...
Do You Have A Psychiatric Condition?
2007-10-12 06:56:00
There is no substitute for an actual consult with a psychiatrist, but your index of suspicion for yourself is high, you may use the criteria that most (if not all) psychiatrists adhere to - the DSM-IV criteria. If we were to draw a line to separate the bloggers in this corner of the Philippine mainstream journals, the division would be made based on what content the author offer to their readers. Let Them Take Offense!
2007-10-05 17:19:00
Seriously, I’m tired of reading posts by know-it-alls who claim that people don’t have the right to feel insulted, hurt and slighted. There’s a reason why the concept of feelings came into existence. It’s all relative and it varies from person to person. One person has no right to tell another that what he ...
Dismal And Sound Logic: Reactions Regarding The Desperate Housewives Contro
2007-10-03 21:32:00
I’m a medical student. Yes, for the past few years, I’ve been studying to be - in the words of Teri Hatcher’s character in “Desperate Housewives ” - a graduate of some Philippine Med School. Of course, I do know that that line isn’t really something that the entire nation should be riled up about. After ...

Moral Victory For The Non-Champion
2007-09-29 15:26:00
According to this speaker tabs list, I was the best speaker for the Manila Inter-varsities held at St. Paul last Thursday. Though it’s great to be acknowledged as an individual, I would have really preferred to have fought tooth and nail for the championship. Unfortunately, my team was a victim of a confluence ...

Art: The Best Play? EVAR!
2007-09-29 12:25:00
Last weekend, Gibbs Cadiz was once again generous enough to give me two tickets to a one-night-only performance of Art. This is the third time I went to the theater due to Gibbs’ kindness - the first two occasions being for the comedy ZsaZsa Zaturnah and Batang Rizal. Going in to the event, ...

The Ten Blogs I Always Look Forward To Reading
2007-09-24 19:27:00
Last week, the now-thin and die-hard fan of the [read: Christianity’s] Only Begotten Son, Ganns Deen, listed the ten blogs that he looks forward to reading. Of course, the fact that my blog was one of the choices doesn’t come as a surprise. Haha. Ganns, I commend you for your impeccable taste and eye for ...

UPRHS Alumni: Ma?am Advincula Needs Our Help
2007-09-20 22:02:00
Two days ago, I visited my third year Filipino teacher. Word quickly spread that she was confined somewhere in Manila due to her long-standing heart condition. The pathology was first diagnosed back in 2000 after consulting her physician due to easy fatiguability and slight dyspnea (difficulty in breathing). Apparently, it wasn’t an acute disease process. ...

It’s always interesting and exciting to deal with intelligent young people in high schools - especially those who are vocal and very willing to fight for what they believe in with much gusto and of course, logical substantiation. I received an email with an attached article. The sender has expressed his/her intent to remain ...

While I was browsing some other atheist blogs last night (here, here and here), I was able to see a long list that was scrolling in one of the sidebars. Apparently, Mojoey has been steadily building a strong and formidable listing of blogs that follow an Atheist or Agnostic leaning. I signed up immediately and ...
Volunteering At The Cancer Institute
2007-09-19 17:46:00
My current rotation in Family Medicine has proved to be a bit more benign (in UP Manila speak, not that taxing), so I impulsively went to “volunteer” for night duty at Philippine General Hospital’s Cancer Institute . From 8 PM to 1 AM, I helped out in monitoring patients’ vital signs and carrying out orders (blood ...

How To Do Your Own Floor Wax At Home
2007-09-07 20:00:00
If you’re a penny pincher, you’ve probably agonized about spending 5 pesos for a box of floor wax. If you have a bit more money to spare for the goal of lustrous floors, a few more pesos could help you afford the pricier liquid variants. Unfortunately, not all of us are rich and some just ...

I?m Going To The World Championships!
2007-09-07 13:27:00
I guess this more or less makes it official. Adrian just made the deposit to transfer our World s Universities Debate Champion ship registration fee to the organizers at Assumption University in Thailand. Square Off Update: UP Manila Bows To Ateneo De Zamboanga
2007-09-06 07:08:00
It’s probably the most contentious round since the very first octofinal, but the adjudicators have spoken and they have decided to award it to the underdogs - Ateneo de Zamboanga. I personally feel that the discussions of UP Manila were more nuanced and based in principle, but oh well, people have their reasons. By being ...

A Boy Is Dead
2007-09-05 20:53:00
This boy is now dead. A boy not even out of his teens has met his untimely and utterly premature demise. He. Is. Dead . Sometimes, the death of strangers often  trigger the appearance of an echo chamber. We forget the finality of the death at the cessation of life. Cris Mendez’ time is now up. He has been ...
Utopian Chains
2007-09-04 17:05:00
Utopian Chains is the latest in the series of original compositions that I’ve co-wrote for my band, Implement Project. I’m very fortunate that I’m bandmates who are excellent in their instruments and it’s also great that I can write lyrics very quickly - almost simultaneous with their eureka moments while the riffs of a song ...
