2007-12-09 19:26:00
The 24th Southeast Asian Games started four days ago and as expected, host Thailand has been dominating the field. As of December 10 (1:42 AM), the Thais have amassed an impressive total of 66 gold medals, 58 silver medals and 41 bronze medals. I personally don’t believe in looking at the tallies ...

The TriNoMa Bloggers Pig Out
2007-12-06 10:23:00
It would’ve sounded more apt - not to mention ten times cooler — to have called an upcoming event a bloggers pig out, but due to anti-gluttony and high brow brains behind this upcoming event, the name Trinoma Bloggers Food Tour would have to stay. Yehey! in association with the snazzy new Triangle North ...
Can You Beat A Geography Geek At His Own Game?
2007-12-03 19:05:00
If you’ve been reading this blog religiously, you might have already chanced upon my minor episodes of self-promotion. I’m a big geography geek and I’ve been one for as long as I can remember (try age seven). That’s why when I found about Travelpod’s nifty Traveler IQ application on Facebook, I was very excited to pit my cartographic memory against the best that the world could offer.   The game basically challenges you to pin point particular locales on the nearly featureless world map. Of course, it can be prone to cheating so it’s a good thing that there’s a 10-second time limit.  The closer you are to the actual location, the higher the score. You also get bonus points for being quick. Just like any other game, it starts of easy and the locations are places that most people could point to on a globe. The game requires you to achieve a certain number of points per stage (the game has 12 stages) to proceed to the next one. To my disapp...

Die Skycable! Die!
2007-12-02 16:54:00
In one of the best kept secrets since Clark Kent’s secret identity, cable provider SkyCable can be treating its thousands of subscribers to a surprises that none of them are expecting. The prank’s magnitude is so vast that it’s going to be akin to a grand April Fools’ Day joke. The only difference is that a) it’s not funny and b) it’s never a good thing to start the year on a sour note. Starting January 1, 2008, SkyCable will no longer carry BTV, Solar Sports, ETC, 2nd Avenue, Crime/Suspense and JackTV. Yes. Isn’t it crazy that with just less than a month to go before a drastic change in their channel roster, a lot of people are still in the dark regarding this inevitability? Let’s put this into perspective. Clearly, people (like me) who are basketball crazy would lose their minds on the prospect of not having Basketball TV. BTV shows NBA games on a daily basis. No matter what time of day it is, you will see something basketball-relat...
Ateneo de Manila Victorious In Square Off Debate Championships
2007-12-02 13:37:00
With barely a  month  to go before the 28th Worlds Universities Debate Championship in Bangkok, Thailand, one team just got a very generous prize of an all-expense paid trip to the tournament. Ateneo de Manila University’s Sharmila Paramanand and Charrisse Borromeo won the Square Off Debate Championship after besting Ateneo de Zamboanga’s Alzhoheir Hajim and Henry Segovia. Ateneo de Manila reached the finals after beating Western Mindanao State University (octofinals), San Beda College (quarterfinals) and De Lasalle University (semifinals). The debaters from Loyola entered the tournament as the top seeds by virtue of having the best performance during the 2006 Philippine Inter-collegiate Debate Championship. Ateneo de Zamboanga was seeded 11th coming in, but they worked up the ladder by winning rounds against the University of the Philippines Manila (octofinals), Polytechnic University of the Philippines (quarterfinals) and the University of the Philippines Diliman (se...

24 Days To Go!
2007-12-02 08:52:00
Am I the only one surprised to know that that tall and imposing structure in the photo above is actually a dormitory? The participants to the 28th Worlds Universities Debate Championship (hosted by Assumption University - Bangkok, Thailand) will be staying in nice dormitory-type rooms that is reminiscent of what a three-star hotel would look like. As you can see, there are also basketball courts in the middle! cool! I’d definitely want to shoot some hoops before and after the round. Good thing my teammate also plays. The rooms are actually student dormitories for the students of the university. I don’t think any school in the country has dormitories comparable to what Assumption offers to its students. Each room comes with: Two 3.5′ x 6.5′ size beds including a mattress and a pillow. Students should bring their own bed sheets, pillow cases, and blankets; or they can be purchased at the book store. Two c...

Should Children Who Neglect Their Elderly Parents Be Criminally Liable?
2007-11-05 11:00:00
This was the motion (i.e. the proposition - the thing that is to be debated on) for the octofinals of the National Debate Championship. It’s quite interesting and very relevant regardless of which country you set it. In the United States, the Baby Boomer generation is aging and they will need to be taken ...

Let Them Take Offense!
2007-10-05 17:19:00
Seriously, I’m tired of reading posts by know-it-alls who claim that people don’t have the right to feel insulted, hurt and slighted. There’s a reason why the concept of feelings came into existence. It’s all relative and it varies from person to person. One person has no right to tell another that what he ...

UPRHS Alumni: Ma?am Advincula Needs Our Help

Two days ago, I visited my third year Filipino teacher. Word quickly spread that she was confined somewhere in Manila due to her long-standing heart condition. The pathology was first diagnosed back in 2000 after consulting her physician due to easy fatiguability and slight dyspnea (difficulty in breathing). Apparently, it wasn’t an acute disease process. ...
