Weird Cake - Treats from a Bipolar Mind
Welcome to a daily view of life from a bipolar brain. I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder Type II in 2001 and like to share about my Witch Doctor visits, meds, work, politics, football, and whatever the hell else is on my twisted mind...enjoy!!!

January 2008 Mood Chart
2008-02-01 04:56:00
After slacking off on the whole concept of mood charting since August 2007, January 's mood chart (made with the free online tools available at Mood Tracker.com) is presented below; fuck, it's so stable as to be almost boring, eh? ;-)Pink area: Zoloft 50 mg and Abilify 5 mg.(Everything else is as referenced previously...)

2008-01-30 04:26:00
Yup, none other than fucking John McCain.I found out moments ago that this withered old fart (I mean, REALLY: do we need someone THAT OLD in the White House?) won the Florida primary. What the fuck?!?This news was, of course, only amplified in toxicity by the fact that, apparently, tomorrow Rudy Giuliani is going to bow out of the race and throw his support to Mr. Life Support System. What a load of crap! I think I'm going to demand that his feeding tube be removed.Fuck it; I'm going to have a glass of wine and chill out for a bit but will check back later!

My ass should be in bed!

However, obviously it's not. ;-)So many thoughts about everything and nothing at all are going through my mind this evening that I find the thought of sleep to be difficult at best.My life? Things couldn't be better, actually, and I don't think that's what's keeping me up (although I must confess that I spend more than a few random moments reflecting on the week's upcoming experiments): in fact, I haven't been happier with a research environment since the days back in San Diego that E.J. and I pursued our postdoctoral studies together.Life in general? That's another story...and doesn't necessarily concern my own life directly, but rather the state of humanity in the United States. From the ongoing (with no visible end) war to the ever-collapsing economy, what is to become of this fucking place? I certainly have no answers, but the collection of idiots running for the Presidential office certainly offer me no solace that things will improve anytime soon. The only serious c...

Penny decided shortly ago that it is simply his duty to lie atop the mouse (yes, the mousepad is buried beneath his huge body) and flick his tail incessantly across the keyboard as I try to type this. Frustrating? Yes. Adorable as all hell? Even more so. :-)
It never ceases to amaze me...

...that people STILL remain clueless about the function of StatCounter. SistahP, if you really give a shit about what's going on in my life (which is, to put it mildly, much more detailed than what I post to the blog), why don't you sprout the balls to give me a call? I just don't know of any more direct way to put it. ;-)
Sea Monkeys, second try
2008-01-28 01:09:00
Yesterday I added the "Instant Live Eggs" (which is bullshit, because they do NOT hatch instantly!) packet to my water purifier-treated Magic Castle tank. I now have about 5 babies swimming around happily! At least, I HOPE they are happy. If any of y'all out there reading this happen to have any experience whatsoever with Sea Monkeys , please leave me a pointer or two regarding what I could have done wrong last time to end their little lives tragically after only a week, m'kay?
Mixing with the locals
2008-01-28 00:06:00
The other night, I was invited by my boss's wife to attend a dinner party held at a house here in Abilene. As non-social as I tend to be, I was a bit apprehensive about going until I heard that a couple of other folks from work had been invited as well. Mind you, I'm not anti-social (which I tend to associate with being completely uninvolved in social events) because, once I get out, I tend to really enjoy myself: for me, it's just a matter of getting motivated enough to get my ass out into the world and socialize in the first place. :-)Things were quite terrific there, with enough good food and conversation to please everyone. I met some really good people, from all walks of life, and found myself even more attracted to just how nice everyone in this town has been so far. That is, until I met Mr. Mouth (obviously not his real name).Mr. Mouth, his wife, and 5-month-old son were assigned to sit at my table during the dinner, and you may recognize the type of individual so deserv...
So tired...
2008-01-26 09:04:00
...yet I feel compelled to leave a post nonetheless. :-)I just got out of a most delicious hot bath and am sipping a glass of wine (with my beloved kitty Penny curled up on my lap) before I crawl off in the general direction of my bed. Things surely have been crazy with my work hours lately (this has definitely been an interesting change!), as I'm sure my friends who I used to keep in better contact with via online chat and telephone calls can attest to.Fortunately I only need to go in to work one day this weekend (Sunday), so I get a day away from it. All the better for giving me time to kill (errr, I mean start) a new batch of Sea Monkeys! Indeed, I received a new packet of eggs in the mail today: I added the water purifier to the tank today and will let it sit overnight before adding eggs on Saturday evening. Please, if anyone has helpful tidbits for keeping these critters alive, I'm all ears!I'll get around to writing more at some point tomorrow; in the meantime, be well an...

PLEASE don't leave us hanging this time, Brett!
2008-01-25 02:28:00
You know the end of the football season is near when the annual wait to see whether or not Green Bay's Brett Favre will return for yet another season begins. Though you are already a living legend, Brett, just think about how much you will miss the game should you retire: football is in your blood, and I'm sure you get as much out of playing as we do watching you!

Ruben Navarette Jr. deserves a pie in the face
2008-01-24 09:34:00
There, I said it and I feel much better for having done so.Ruben sucks, ladies and gentlemen. As far as I have been able to discern, he spends the majority of his time doing nothing more than inciting flames betwixt illegal aliens (yes, they ARE here in the United States against the law, hence I like to use the old terminology, thank you very much!) and anyone who opposes their presence. I just wonder how many other people think Ruben is a desperate fuckwad in need of getting laid to get his agenda straightened out?

Sleepless in Abilene
2008-01-24 09:19:00
It is WELL past my bedtime, but for some strange reason I find myself somewhat hyper at the moment. I am just so damn happy with my new job and the life that I have found in the midst of a small west Texas town that I'm not exactly sure how to describe it! I can tell you, however, that for the moment I am jamming out to Phish singing "Bouncing Around The Room" (which I previously posted the lyrics to). It describes the jittery feeling in my soul at the moment like nothing else can.I do have apologies however to Bradley, whom I know HATES Phish (and whom incidentally I thank for a photo he emailed me yesterday...no explanation necessary). ;-)
Long day, but not too bad :-)

YO, homeboys and homegirls...it is the infamous (or perhaps I flatter myself too much) ariadneK with a brief audio post for the day! So how is your seek going? Mine is flying by so quickly that I almost literally do not know which end is up. I love this job, but the fact that I feel like spending every possible moment tending to it just may be the death of me. Oh well, at least I'll die with a cheesy-assed grin etched upon my face!

Weird Cake Blog of the Week #40: "The Rude Pundit"
2008-01-22 06:50:00
So after dragging my ass home from work at 10:00pm (yeah, fucking LATE, yet I managed to generate some good data and am thus quite happy at the moment), the first thing I usually do is jump online to check out news headlines...and after that it's off to this week's Weird Cake honours recipient, "The Rude Pundit", to get a more unique spin on events of note. Seriously, it's not just everywhere that you'll see someone write on MLK Day that "Martin Luther King Would Fuck Bush's Shit Up". :-) Priceless, indeed! That doesn't quite float your boat? Then try either "Why Bill O'Reilly Ought to Be Sodomized with a Microphone" or "Evidence That Jesus Doesn't Give a Sandy Shit About Gay Marriage" on for size.

Ex-NFL star Herschel Walker reveals in upcoming book he has multiple person
2008-01-19 21:37:00
ATLANTA (AP) -- Georgia football great Herschel Walker has multiple personalities -- a revelation in an upcoming book that surprises the man who coached the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner."That's all news to me," former Georgia coach Vince Dooley said in Friday editions of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "All I know is whatever personality he had when he had the football was the one I liked.""Breaking Free" will chronicle Walker's life with multiple personality disorder, according to Shida Carr, a publicist at Simon & Schuster.Carr said the book will be published in August, but gave no other details and declined to provide excerpts. In three seasons at Georgia, Walker led the Bulldogs to a 33-3-1 record, three straight Southeastern Conference championships and the 1980 national title. He won the Heisman as a junior, then left school a year early to sign with the now-defunct U.S. Football League.Walker played for the Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles and New Y...

WOW!!!
2008-01-19 08:05:00
I just spent the last hour speaking on the phone with a friend that, until now, I have only know via internet chat for the past 4-5 years. The verdict? It was fantastic!!! I am seriously of the thought that the longer you know someone (be it online or otherwise) the more serious of a friend that they really are. Anyway, we chatted about things both personal and otherwise, and I felt nothing but comfortable in either case. How may of you have dared venture into such uncharted waters? I sincerely advise doing so at least once: firstly, you never know what you might chance encountering, and secondly, it's always worth trying anything at least a single moment, you know? ;-)
HealthLat: Healthcare experience exchange
2008-01-19 02:05:00
What do y'all think about this HealthLat stuff? Check it out and let me know your opinions...it was brought to my attention by a comment made to one of my recent posts, and from what I have checked out so far, it looks rather interesting: you basically can report negative side effects to various meds, and the comments are then stored in a searchable database. Perhaps I'm being a bit optimistic in saying this, but the concept is really quite cool considering that PATIENTS KNOW BEST when it comes to reporting such things first-hand. Fuck, it gets tiring being a guinea pig slave to only the side effects reported in scientific studies (which are fudged at best), so I found this to be refreshing in that I can vent my personal experiences somewhere. The reporting consists of simple drop-down menu selections of side effects and whatnot, so everything is fairly quick and painless to deal with. In any case, I just thought I'd pass the link along to anyone interested in participating.

...early, no less!) and curled up with a tasty glass of Pinot grigio on my lips and a happily purring kitty on my lap...could life get any finer than this? :-) Seriously, it's been a good though busy week, and the little things in life strike me as amazingly pleasant this evening.Uh...all is terrific, I should add, with the exception of The Great Sea Monkey Mystery: all of my beautiful little babies have managed to DIE sometime between Wednesday evening and tonight! Little bastards. I just must suck something fierce at cultivating them, 'cause the same thing happened a few years ago when I attempted to do so. Oh well, I guess it's time to order more eggs, eh?I'll post more later, but I just wanted to check in and give a quick shout-out now to all of my online buddies. I hope that y'all had fantastic weeks as well and that the weekend will smile many pleasantries upon you.(((Hugs!)))ariK

Cpl. Cesar Laurean: hunt him down like the dog he is!
2008-01-17 05:07:00
This bastard should be the current poster child for the death penalty, and I seriously mean it. Of course he's "innocent": an individual accused of rape by someone who then winds up burned and buried in his backyard (along with an 8-month-old fetus presumably fathered by "guess who") OBVIOUSLY is just a victim of bizarre, coincidental circumstance, right? Fuck NO!!! Mr. Laurean, you deserve to die a slow, painful death: of course you're probably hiding out with relatives in Mexico right now (how convenient for you), but when U.S. law enforcement catches up with you, I wouldn't mind seeing you miss your day in court as a result of fatal police brutality in the process of apprehending you. You truly suck, and it's a shame that you've already managed to spread your seed in this world and produce a child in addition to the one you grilled alive inside Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach.

Many unfavorable drug studies aren’t published
2008-01-17 04:06:00
BOSTON - Nearly a third of antidepressant drug studies are never published in the medical literature and nearly all happen to show that the drug being tested did not work, researchers reported on Wednesday. And in some of the studies that are published, unfavorable results have been recast to make the medicine appear more effective than it really is, said the research team led by Erick Turner of the Oregon Health & Science University.Even if not deliberate, this can be bad news for patients, they wrote in their report, published in the New England Journal of Medicine."Selective publication can lead doctors to make inappropriate prescribing decisions that may not be in the best interest of their patients and, thus, the public health," they wrote. The idea that unfavorable test results get quietly tucked away so nobody will see them -- sometimes call the "file drawer effect" — has been around for years. The Turner team was able to study the question because the U.S. Food and Drug A...

Hey y'all, sorry for the extreme lack of posts lately...I have been traveling (yet again) and otherwise dealing with work stuff that, as of tomorrow, will take on a different meaning than it has now. ...from a random hotel room in Bethesda, Maryland! I am tired as shit in the wake of my travels so far but hanging in quite fine. Though I have a hefty day ahead of me tomorrow, I'm relaxing this evening with football and wine (how 'bout that amazing Brett Favre tossing his 420th career touchdown earlier in the Green Bay victory over San Diego?). :-) Now THAT'S what I'm talking about! While I fill in some paperwork that I have to hand in bright and early in the morning, you can count on the fact that I'll be tuned in to the Sunday night game to see how Dallas fares against Chicago.Yesterday in Minneapolis went quite well, though flying back and forth in a single day left me exhausted (especially knowing that although I dragged home at midnight I had this morning's flight to "look forward to"...yeah right!). Just in case anyone might be wondering, I DID get the opportunity to see the collapsed bridge there in Minneapolis during my visit, and I was once again wined and dined nic...

Hehe...I always loved that old Beatles song, but for now...I'll just say that it legitimately captures what's going on in my life for the time being. I just got through spending Wednesday and Thursday in Abilene, Texas...but that's not the end of my travels: bright and early tomorrow morning I fly off to Minneapolis, Minnesota for the day (I return to Albuquerque around midnight), following which I head out to Bethesda, Maryland on Sunday morning. Will this madness ever end?!? I certainly hope so...but rest assured that I am in a better mood lately than I have been in in a long time. I'll explain the craziness in the near future, but for now, just roll with it. ;-)
Vote on the fate of Barry Bonds' 756th home run ball!
2007-09-18 04:52:00
Something brilliant is afoot...in the form of Marc Ecko's decision to let the public vote on what should become of Barry Bonds ' 756th home run ball. Ecko purchased the ball for $752,467 on Saturday (unfortunately, the kid that caught the ball was forced to sell his prize due to not being able to pay the taxes required in order to keep it) and has set up a website here where you can vote to have the ball either: (A) sent to the Hall of Fame, (B) branded with an asterisk, or (C) launched into space. I personally voted for the asterisk-branding. Why not drop by and vote yourself? The poll is open through midnight on Sept. 25th.
