Are your bikes taking up your living space?
2007-09-09 12:02:00
With so much focus on the environment, climate change and emissions these days, it's no wonder that many people are starting to reduce their carbon output in their quest to make the world a better place for future generations. One great way to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions, and keep yourself fit at the same time, is to dump the car and starting riding a bicycle.Of course, when you are not riding your bikes, you need to safely store them somewhere - preferably out of the way where you won't be tripping over them or finding them taking up half of your living space. When I was a youngster, a bike rack was usually a very basic home-made device cobbled together by the neighbourhood handyman, and probably twice as big and heavy as it needed to be. Fortunately, things have moved on since then, and there are some really cool, practical bike racks that can easily be ordered online at a decent price.I've just been having a look at these bike racks from the Car Guy Garage. Some of them ...

Dickhead Of The Day
2007-09-09 09:39:00
Although I do believe that the unprecedented security levels at this week's APEC meeting here in Sydney were way over-the-top, and heavily infringed on peoples' civil rights, I really don't have any sympathy for the following turkey.I saw the footage on TV. This idiot, Greg McLeay, was told repeatedly by police to wait until an official APEC motorcade had passed by before he crossed the road. He was told this very clearly and very firmly by heavily armed police who obviously meant business. There is no way he could have misheard their instructions. In a situation like this 999 out of 1,000 people would obey the police instructions. But Mr McLeay decided to be a complete dickhead and use the APEC World Leaders Summit to assert his civil right to jaywalk through a speeding motorcade and cause general mayhem. And he got arrested and thrown in gaol for his troubles. What is really unforgivable about Greg McLeay's behaviour in deciding to be a complete dickhead and get arrested in a vi...
How did America ever elect this fool?
2007-09-08 10:07:00
Although it is never difficult to find reasons to be critical of George W. Bush, he really has surpassed his usual high-degree of ineptness while at the current APEC Summit here in Sydney, Australia. God this man is an embarrassment for the USA.Not only did he get the name of the conference incorrect in a major speech, calling it OPEC instead of APEC (maybe he's got oil on the brain), but he can't even get the name of the host country where he is currently staying right. Please Dubya - don't ever decide to bomb Austria (in Europe). Us poor people from Australia (a different continent in the South Pacific) don't want you sending the B-52s et al to unload their destructive cargo on us because you can't get the simple name of a country correct. It seriously does make me wonder about Bush's mental capacity (and I am being serious). We all know that he was an extremely heavy drinker in his younger years. I can relate to that because I was too. But I have also been diagnosed with bra...

Osama Bin Laden arrested at Sydney APEC conference!
2007-09-06 09:41:00
Well, it looks like we can start bringing the troops home from Afghanistan now. Today the most wanted man in the world, Osama Bin Laden , was arrested just 10 metres (30 feet) from the Sydney hotel George W. Bush is staying at during the current APEC leaders' conference. And if you believe the previous sentence to be the truth, then you obviously don't watch the best satire show in Australia (and the world), The Chaser's War on Everything. Last night's episode had me laughing so hard I nearly fell off my chair.Anyway, back to today's big news story. What an embarrassment for the state and federal security forces! Hundreds of millions of dollars spent on fencing-off Sydney, water cannons, riot police and intelligence gathering, and yet a group of comedians can drive straight into the security-zone just by putting some Canadian flags on hire cars. Before they reached the US president's hotel they were apparently waved through not just one, but two police checkpoints.Obviously the...

Ever wondered what George eats for lunch?
2007-09-05 07:58:00
It looks like the US prez might need to be referred to a healthy lifestyle dietician if what he had on his plate at today's APEC lunch is any indication of his regular diet:The contents: a large steak, two sausages, at least four prawns, a sliver of carrot and small piece of corn.Obviously he takes after his father, who famously quipped back in 1990:"I do not like broccoli," he said in 1990, when questioned about a broccoli ban on Air Force One."And I haven't liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I'm President of the United States, and I'm not going to eat any more broccoli."I do recall that the US broccoli farmers at the time were outraged.Article source: Meat and greet - all the president's lunch - Sydney Morning Herald--Well now you never did see such a terrible thingAs was seen last night on T.V.Maybe if we're lucky, they will show it againSuch a terrible thing to see - ohBut there's nothing you can do when you're next in lineYou've got to ...

Grant Robert Mugabe an amnesty? No bloody way!!!
2007-08-30 13:39:00
I won't be condescending to the people of Zimbabwe by saying I can imagine the hell they must go through every day under the rule of cruel tyrant Robert Mugabe . I don't think anyone who is living what can be considered a relative life of luxury could really understand the horrible suffering imposed on Zimbabwe's citizens. This truly evil, demented, poor excuse for a human being is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands (probably millions) of his people. In his 27 years of rule by iron fist he has destroyed the country that used to be the breadbasket of Africa. It's people are starving, inflation is around 1,000,000% and still rising, innocent citizens are taken by the security police and tortured, often to never be seen again. Women are regularly raped by the police, who are supposed to protect them. The place is just an absolute mess.We all want to send the end of the Mugabe regime - the sooner the better. But I still cannot agree with the following:Amnesty only way...

The Ugly Australian
2007-08-29 17:50:00
I can never get my head around racist, selfish people. I've had an interesting experience over the past couple of days after meeting a true-blue example of "the ugly Australian " online.A couple of days ago a new member posted a discussion article in BUMPzee's Australian Blogs Community. The topic? A call to end all Muslim immigration and preserve "the Australian way of life". The discussion's been deleted I'm afraid - I'll explain why I think this action was taken later.Anyway, this person has set up a blog called " AUSTRALIA, LETS PRESERVE OUR WAY OF LIFE " (I won't link to it - I don't believe in sending traffic to racist &/or hate-filled sites). The main text of the single post on the blog is:No longer can you call Australia a christian country. One of the main issues that concern me, is that there are people who are born in Australia that hold absolutely no allegiance to the country of its way of life. I remember a time when Aussies where about bbq's and the beach an...

Thank you to our brave emergency services
2007-06-09 10:48:00
I'm not sure how much of this has been covered by the international media, but my state of New South Wales has just experienced a "once in a lifetime" storm. I saw the predictions the other day when the weather bureau warned of 2 weather fronts about to collide near the coast and thought it was going to be bad. Think of the movie "The Perfect Storm" and that will give you some idea of what we have just experienced here on the East coast of Australia (well - maybe not that horrendous, but still pretty bad).My city of Sydney has been fairly hard-hit, with hundreds of thousands of homes without power and trees down everywhere. Fortunately my area near the inner-city seems to have taken it fairly well (but we copped it 8 years ago when a massive hailstorm caused billions of dollars worth of damage). The worst hit area is the Hunter Region which is to the north of Sydney. At least six people have died after being washed away by flash-floods. A family of five was killed when a section of ...

Paris Hilton - why prison will be good for her
2007-06-09 09:30:00
I'm not going to write a long post about Paris ' tearful return to prison since it's been wall-to-wall coverage by the media. Just a few of my own, deep thoughts about her situation. She was all eager to do her time a few days ago, and yet three days into her sentence she's released back to her mansion for house arrest. The judge didn't like that decision by the sheriff and rightly sent her back to prison. So there she was, crying her eyes out in court and screaming for her mother.Less than a week without her luxurious, spoilt brat lifestyle, and she's on the edge of a nervous breakdown. Crikey! She has obviously had too much of the good life (and I'm not referring to her TV series). It should be noted that she is not in any physical danger in prison. She has been kept in an area reserved for high-profile people and segregated from the general prison population. The only inconveniences she has to suffer are no partying, early bedtime, not much of a menu to choose from, and bored...

An interesting article about torture
2007-06-09 07:24:00
I was reading this article and thought it might be worth posting. The treatment these prisoners received is shocking. Here's a small extract providing graphic descriptions of the conditions under which they were held:".....prisoners being kept naked for weeks, sometimes attached to a "shackling ring" in cells. Buckets served as toilets. Masked guards who never spoke were the only contact for those consigned to four-month isolation regimes....."".....Cells were cramped and kept extremely hot or cold, the report said. Prisoners had to listen to irritating noises, including "torture music,"........."Who would you guess the captors to be? Are the prisoners victims of Zimbabwe's evil dictator Robert Mugabe? Or is the above a description of conditions for prisoners in Iraq during the reign of Saddam Hussein? Maybe it's an old report from the days Romania was ruled over by the evil tyrant Nicolae Ceausescu? You would be partly right if you picked Romania under Ceausescu. But you would be...

Life support - who should have the final say?
2007-06-09 03:25:00
I just came across this interesting discussion at Helium about whether a suffering patient or his/her loved ones should have the final say on whether to continue with life support. It is my strong belief that if the patient is able to make a reasoned decision, then the patient should have the final say. I could imagine nothing worse than being hooked up to life support equipment for the rest of my life and being told that there is no chance that I will be able to continue life without that support.Life is more than just having a pulse and breathing. Life is "living". Being able to do the things you want to do. Achieving things and setting goals. Having relationships and friendships. Being able to communicate with others. If I wasn't able to do those things, I don't think I would want to go on living.Down here there is an ongoing debate about voluntary euthanasia. I am a strong supporter of peoples' right to choose. If a person can see no reason to go on living, and it is more than...

Julie Amero granted a retrial - great news
2007-06-07 14:03:00
It looks like common sense has finally won the day in Connecticut. Julie Amero is the substitute teacher who was facing a sentence of up to 40 years in prison after the computer in her classroom started popping up indecent pictures which children were able to see.Every indication showed that the computer was infected with spyware & malware. Ms Amero panicked at the time as she had been told earlier not switch the computer off. Instead of switching off the monitor she ran from the classroom trying to find someone who could stop the porn from popping up on the computer screen. She has confirmed that she was fairly computer illiterate. The travesty of justice was that an expert witness was not allowed to testify about spyware present on the computer. If he had been allowed to testify, the case surely would have been dismissed, or at worst Ms Amero would have received a slap on the wrist for not switching off the monitor at the time.  The school principal where the incident ...

Make easy money by sharing your pictures online

Visitors to this blog and my wallpapers blog may have noticed that I use Share-a-pic to host most of my picture galleries. Whale Watching
2007-06-05 15:44:00
Last week Japan very much spat the dummy when the International Whaling Commission voted to continue the ban on commercial whaling. However, due to a loophole Japan continues to kill whales in the name of "scientific research" although very few, if any, scientific papers have actually been published by Japan to justify it's continuation of the slaughter of whales. The whalers are allowed to sell the whale meat produced as a by-product of their scientific research, and most people know that "scientific research" is just a back-door way to get around the commercial whaling ban. This year Japan has announced that it will, for the first time in many years, kill 50 humpback whales in the name of scientific research. This has alarmed many countries which want to see these beautiful creatures of the deep protected and flourishing. It has especially outraged countries such as Australia and New Zealand which have strong Whale watching tourist industries.I can recall that, in 1994 when I live...

PayPerPost Launches PayPerPost Direct
2007-06-05 05:23:00
I'm sure many of you will have heard about PayPerPost, which pays bloggers to write sponsored posts about web sites, products, services, and companies. Well now PayPerPost has introduced a new service that enables advertisers to place blog ads by negotiating directly with the blogger without going through the middleman.PayPerPost Dire ct lets bloggers put a badge on their blog which advertisers can click to negotiate directly with the blogger, instead of placing blog ads in the marketplace and waiting for bloggers to take up the opportunity. And where competitors like ReviewMe charge a 50-100% markup and keep up to half your money,PerPerPost Direct charges only a 10% fee, 5% of which goes to transaction fees for PayPal and credit card processing. Here's an example: you might have two badges on your site - one for PerPerPost Direct and one for a competitor. Both badges are for $200.An advertiser clicks on the competitor's badge and you make $100 and the competitor makes $100. But if ...

Big changes coming in Firefox 3
2007-06-03 06:53:00
Personally, I felt a bit of disappointment when I upgraded to Firefox 2. There really wasn't much difference between it and Firefox 1.5. In fact, some of my favourite features (such as the pop-up search box) had been removed. But it looks like Firefox 3 is really going to have some major changes to everything from bookmarks to the location bar. I really am looking forward to when the final release comes out.You can read about and view pictures of some of the planned features at the following article:The User Interface of Firefox 3: FeaturesFirefox 3 is going to provide a wide range of improvements to performance, stability, and security, and it’s also going to present several new user facing features. Here is a quick recap of design work that’s been going on in the Mozilla community over the past few weeks for Firefox 3, along with information about how you can help contribute, by providing feedback on these designs, or creating your own UI mockups. In case you are wondering how ...

Four easy ways to earn money from your website
2007-06-03 04:44:00
It's great having your own site, but isn't it even better to make some money from it as well? Here are four ways I am earning income from my 3 web sites.First off the block is Google AdSense. It has several great features:Number one is contextual advertising. AdSense for content automatically crawls the content of your pages and delivers ads (you can choose both text or image ads) that are relevant to your audience and your site content—ads so well-matched, in fact, that your readers will actually find them useful. You get paid for each click on an ad.The second feature is AdSense for search, which allows website publishers to provide Google web and site search to their visitors, and to earn money by displaying Google ads on the search results pages. And the third feature is the referral program, which allows you to earn even more money by referring visitors to useful products and services such as AdSense.I'm making good money from AdSense and really recommend it as a way of mon...

First candidate for the 2007 Worst Women Drivers Awards
2007-06-01 16:50:00
Earlier this year I posted a humorous post listing the worst women drivers of 2006 (see The 2006 Women Drivers Of The Year Awards ). Well I think we have found the first candidate for the 2007 awards:German drives down subway stairsA German woman in Dusseldorf blocked the entrance to an underground station when she mistook it for a subterranean car park, police said on Wednesday. The 52-year-old drove her Volkswagen Beetle across the pavement and into the entrance, where it came to a halt five steps down.Police estimated the damage to the station at around 1,500 euros (£1,000).The VW Beetle-Cabrio remained balanced on the fifth step and the woman was able to get out unaided and unharmed.Continues at: BBC NEWS | Europe | German drives down subway stairsI bet she feels extremely embarrassed!--Things People Said - School Excuse Letters:"Please excuse Gloria from Jim today. Optimising Firefox by using about:config
2007-05-30 14:18:00
Since I recently upgraded Firefox to version 2 and also got broadband last week, I have used a few "hacks" to get my Firefox running at it's best, including reducing the amount of system memory it uses, increasing the number of concurrent connections to sites, and a few other little tweaks. Because Firefox is open-source software, modifying it is extremely easy to do. Most modifications are done using the about:config feature (just type about:config into your address bar and you will see all of the options available to you). Here is a great article listing 20 about:config hacks which should make your Firefox run faster, and also improve some other things such as the find function.Hacking Firefox: The secrets of about:configEver since its debut, Firefox has garnered a reputation for being an enormously customizable program, both through its add-on architecture and its internal settings. If I was American, I would be so embarrassed
2007-05-28 12:52:00
This really comes from the odd-news vault. In America (in less than 4 hours time) a new museum will be opening. But this one is different, because it provides no educational purpose at all. In fact, what it teaches will damage the reputation of America all around the World (and make it a laughing stock). The Creation Museum in Kentucky is based on the Bible. It shows man co-existing with dinosaurs (which every bit of scientific evidence shows died out millions of years ago). It "proves" that the Grand Canyon was made in just a few days during the great flood. And it demonstrates how Noah fitted two of every one of the 1,250,000+ animal species (including the dinosaurs) on his ark. I wish he was around today - he could help me with my overflowing storage closet. It really saddens me that people are gullible enough to believe the claptrap that will be on display there. Apparently more than 50% of American s believe literally in the story of Genesis, including the Universe and Earth being...

Man wears same trousers to work every day for 2.5 years
2007-05-27 03:00:00
I don't think I would like to have to work with this bloke - especially towards the end of the working week. He would reek. I lived in Darwin (right at the top of Australia in the tropics) for 3 months during the wet season at the start of 1986. It was so hot and humid that I would be soaked in sweat within minutes once I left my air-conditioned home unit. This bloke would be sweating by the time he got to work, and then he would be sweating on the way home again. To wear the same trousers every day and wash them only on weekends is very odd, anti-social behaviour. And to cap things off, the man is actually proud of his record. It would be like boasting that you only wash your dirty dishes once a fortnight - definitely not something to be proud of. One thing the article doesn't mention is if he is single or has a partner - I would put my bets on the former:Darwin man wears same trousers for 2.5 yearsThe fashion police have been called in on a Darwin accountant who admits he has wor...
