Much Ado About Nothing......
2007-05-26 01:59:00 I nearly sprayed my coffee over the computer screen when I read the following article. Obviously some people are very jittery after the Virginia Tech and other recent shootings.Prosthetic leg prompts lock down - Yahoo! NewsBELLINGHAM, Wash. - The woman suspected foul play was afoot; she just had no idea what it was. Police barricaded streets near a branch of St. Joseph Hospital after that woman called to report a man with an assault rifle walking into a medical office building. The assault rifle turned out to be a prosthetic leg, Bellingham Police Deputy Chief David Doll said.Police searched the building floor by floor. When no suspect was found, police evacuated the building and the woman who reported the incident spotted the office worker who had carried the leg, The Bellingham Herald reported."Everyone did everything right," Doll said. "Like we hoped, it turned out to be a good situation today."The scare brought a response from several agencies, including the Whatcom County Sheri... More About: Thing , Much Ado About Nothing
Silverchair - Straight Lines
2007-05-25 23:55:00 This must be one of the best songs released this year. Silverchair, if you haven't heard of them, are an awesome Aussie rock band. They just put out hit after hit. If you haven't heard it already, try to get your hands on a copy of their latest one, Stra ight Line s. Exercise for the over 40s
2007-04-21 04:12:00 I just came across this exercise suggested for the over 40s to build muscle strength in the arms and shoulders. It seems so easy so I thought that I'd pass it on to my friends. The article suggested doing it three days a week.1. Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 2kg potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, then relax.2. Each day, you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 5kg potato sacks. Then 25kg potato sacks and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 50kg potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute 3. After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the sacks.--Things People Said - Courtroom Quotations:Accused, Defending His Own Case: "Did you get a good look at my face when I took your purse?"... Aussie wetlands may be drained to provide water for drought-relief
2007-04-21 02:06:00 In my last post I talked about the plight of our farmers and the effect the drought will have on food production. But it's a lot more than that. It will have enormous environmental consequences too. Some of our biggest wetlands are in the Murray-Darling Basin. As well as providing refuge for native wildlife, they are also home for bird species which have migrated from the Northern Hemisphere at the onset of Winter. Now it looks like the wetlands may have to be drained to provide water for drought-stricken townships. This is going to have a massive impact on wildlife and the local ecology, but there isn't much that can be done about it. After all, the only alternative would be to evacuate hundreds of thousands of people from the inland to the coast, but that is obviously impractical. This report is worth reading:Drain wetlands to save townsEIGHT wetlands face being drained to free up water along the Murray-Darling as John Howard warns that Australia may have to import more food to co... Australia's food production may be more than halved this year
2007-04-20 14:24:00 This is very scary. If we don't get rain within the next 6 weeks or so, then much of our prime agricultural land will not be able to draw any water for irrigation for this year's crops. The Murray-Darling Basin is Australia's breadbasket, and well over 50% of our food is grown there. We are now looking at our relatively inexpensive meat, vegetables and fruit doubling or more in price. That is really going to have a knock-on effect on our economy as people will be less able to afford the non-necessities of life.Sadly, the outlook is that we may have to accept this as being a permanent situation due to global climate changes. Because our nation is so flat it is not conducive to rain, so many believe that Australia may be the early warning sign of what could happen to the rest of the world if the climate continues to change. Our leaders have to make brave political decisions - and soon. There are 3 real choices. The first is to sit on their hands and hope (pray) that the drought will ... More About: Food , This , Production , More , Stra
Six year study shows teen abstinence programs are useless
2007-04-17 13:06:00 I've always been of the belief that teenage hormones will usually win out in the end when the opportunity to have passionate sex arises. Instead of wasting money on silly programs such as pledging abstinence and ceremonies where good little girls promise their daddies that they will be virgins until they marry, the money and time should be spent on teaching teenagers about the choices available to them.Sex outside of marriage should not be seen as an evil sin that will bring shame upon the participants and their families. Teens should be taught about important things such as sexually transmitted diseases, how to have safe sex, contraception, how to say no when they don't want to, and that if they do succumb to temptation and it is what they wanted to do, they should not feel guilty about it.Prog rams pledging abstinence cause divisions and secrecy in families. If a girl has pledged to her parents that she will abstain, and then she falls in love with a boy and wants to break that p... More About: Study , Abstinence , Program
How many leaf blowers does it take to blow a leaf?
2007-04-17 05:57:00 I'm sitting here slowly going crazy at the moment. I'm trying to listen to an important political speech on TV, and it's "leaf-blowing day".An hour ago a council employee came wandering slowly down the street with a noisy leaf-blower that seemed to go on forever (well, about 10 minutes of it). He then wandered off, and a few minutes another employee blowing away leaves came along the street behind my place. He then walked down the path that runs beside my block of units (blowing leaves all the way), and proceeded to blow away the leaves on the same stretch of footpath that the other employee had done 10 minutes earlier. Finally the noise of his machinery faded as he disappeared down the street, and peace and tranquility returned at last (or so I thought). But then the contractor employed by the owner of my block came along with his leaf blower, and proceeded to blow all of the leaves in the front yard out onto the footpath that had just been cleared of leaves by the two council emp... Study rates chocolate better than kisses
2007-04-17 02:13:00 I don't know about these Brits, but I know what I would definitely prefer. A good long pash beats chocolate hands down.Study rates chocolate better than kissesBritish researchers say they are stunned to discover people get more of a buzz from eating chocolate than passionately kissing their lovers."These results really surprised and intrigued us," psychologist Dr David Lewis said after leading a study that recorded brain activity and heart rate from volunteers who tasted pieces of dark chocolate or kissed their partners."There is no doubt that chocolate beats kissing hands down when it comes to providing a long-lasting body and brain buzz - a buzz that, in many cases, lasted four times as long as the most passionate kiss." The study found that at the point chocolate melts in the mouth, all areas of the brain are stimulated far more intensely and for longer than from from kissing. The study found chocolate also made the heart beat faster.Read the full article at: Study rates chocolat... The Importance Of Walking
2007-04-16 18:39:00 Thanks Dad for sending me this one:The Import ance Of Walk ing Walking can add minutes to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $5000 per month. My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. Now she's 97 years old and we don't know where the hell she is.The only reason I would take up exercising is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks. Haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to go thereI have to exercise early in the morning before my brain figures out what I'm doing.I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.I have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them. The advantage of exercising every day is that you die healthier. If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country. .............And last but not least,You could run this over to your friends but why not just e-mail it to them... Announcing my new free wallpapers site
2007-04-14 20:27:00 This post is to announce the opening of my new site: Sea Eagle's Free Wall papers .Why did I set up my wallpapers site? Well, for two years my ISP-provided website has been sitting in construction mode (in fact the front page still is - sort of). So it had me searching for a way I could utilise that site. This week I had look at my wallpapers changing every 10 minutes, and I thought "why don't I do something more practical with the thousands of wallpapers I have on my hard drive?" It took me a lot of time and effort searching and surfing around various sites over the past few years to find the ones I wanted to save. So why keep all of them to myself? If I can upload them and make it easier for other people to find the wallpapers they want, it makes me feel good. So, please enjoy your time on my site. If you like KISS, here's 66 great wallpapers of them
2007-04-12 15:26:00 I've been a fan of the rock band Kiss for nearly 30 years now. When it comes to stage shows, they would have to be rated right up with the best acts of all time. And their concert with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 2003 was absolutely brilliant (I didn't go to it, but I bought the DVD). If you want to see a rock band really working well with a symphony, you definitely have to get the KISS Symphony DVD or CD. Many other bands have tried performing with an orchestra, but only KISS has really pulled it off.Anyway, a band as loud and colourful as KISS deserves to have lots of wallpapers made in its honour, and I've just uploaded 66 of the ones I have collected over the past few years to my Kiss Wall papers Share-a-Pic gallery. All of them are good quality with a resolution of 1024x768.Here's a few thumbnails of them. Red Cross says Iraqis face 'immense' suffering
2007-04-12 01:18:00 A fat lot of good our invasion of Iraq did. Sure - we deposed an evil dictator, but in his place we have placed even more burden and suffering on the people of Iraq. A day or so ago I read the following assessment from an Iraqi official who has done a report on the status of post-war Iraq. It is not exactly complimentary to the USA and its allies:"The corroded and corrupt state of Saddam was replaced by the corroded, inefficient, incompetent and corrupt state of the new order," Ali A. Allawi concludes in "The Occupation of Iraq," newly published by Yale University Press. (source: Insider: Missteps Soured Iraqis on U.S. | The Huffington Post). Now the International Red Cross has released a report on the situation of Iraqi civilians, and it makes for sad reading:The International Committee of the Red Cross says the situation for ordinary Iraqis is getting steadily worse.Four years after the US-led invasion, the ICRC says the conflict is inflicting immense suffering, and calls for great... The world's riskiest Internet sites
2007-04-11 22:39:00 I found this really interesting. Researchers at McAfee have compiled a detailed list of the most dangerous domains when it comes to exploits and malware. It is broken down into various groups such as top-level domain (such as .com, .au or .info). Also listed are the most dangerous countries and a lot of other useful information. It just goes to show why using Intern et security programs such as anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-malware are so important.Mapping the Mal WebIntroductionOnline safety risks are a truly global issue. Survey shows technology is encroaching on family time
2007-04-11 21:55:00 Do you feel that computers and video games are having a negative impact on the amount of quality time family members spend with each other? Well it looks like you are not alone. A recent Australian survey now confirms that many parents believe they are spending less time interacting with their children these days due to the distractions of modern technology.I find it sort of sad really. Parents really enjoy hearing about how their child's day at school went.Down here our government is actually looking into scrapping school homework, because children are becoming overloaded with it. When I was at school (graduated in 1983), my homework was only an hour or two each day. But nowadays some children have 3 or 4 hours of homework each day (and that's for 9th graders). Teachers setting homework don't seem to be interacting with other teachers to ensure they do not pile too much on the poor kids. When I got home from school, the first thing I did (depending on the weather) was get changed... Who would you beep for - Christ or Satan?
2007-04-08 07:46:00 I think this is quite funny. One person puts a "Beep for Chris t " sign outside her business, so a neighbour puts a "Honk Twice for Satan " sign outside his business (although he is not a Satan-worshipper). One good thing is that both of the shop-owners have shown tolerance for each other. Neither has requested the other to remove their sign. It would be interesting to know who is getting the most honks!Neighboring businesses in Jesus vs. Satan spatSome might call them "signs" of the Last Days. Two neighboring businesses that share a parking lot are locked in a dispute pitting Jesus and Satan against each other, with each posting streetside signs asking passers-by to honk for their favorite. The first shot in the spiritual warfare now underway in a small shopping plaza in Naugatauck, Conn., began when Claudette Soden, a devout Christian and owner of Photos Onto DVD, posted a sign at the front of the parking lot proclaiming, "Easter: Beep for Christ."Read the rest at: WorldNetDaily: Neigh... Flying car may be available as soon as 2009
2007-03-21 10:51:00 It looks like the flying cars seen in The Jetsons & other cartoons or sci-fi shows may soon be a reality. A Dutch company (PAL-V) is hoping to have a wheeled vehicle available as soon as 2009. The car is like a 3-wheeled gyrocopter. It's blades fold into the roof, and it has a U-shaped tail & propeller on the back (see picture below). When on the road, it will lean into turns, go from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds, and travel 340 miles on one tank of gas. It will fly below 4,000 feet (so it's out of commercial airspace), have a maximum airspeed of 195 km/h (120 mph), and will take off in less than 50 metres (165 feet). Specs are below the main picture. Click for full size It really looks quite exciting. 2007-03-08 09:01:00 Definitely a case of "Oh my God - what have I done?" - especially since it was not the owner driving it.Man prangs £830k Bugatti Veyron An unknown driver trashed an £830,000 ($1,604,639) Bugatti Veyron on Sunday in what UK tabloid The Sun is calling "the world's costliest road crash".The 253mph beast crashed in pouring rain on a 40mph stretch of the B375 near Chertsey, Surrey, while allegedly doing 100mph. More articles from this author:2006-12-02 06:24:00 Do you find there are certain sites you visit with Firefox /Mozilla /SeaMonkey where the links won't change colour after you visit them? It can be a real nuisance, especially on sites where there are lots of links that you may visit over several browsing sessions. Although Firefox does have an option to set your own link colours, it can be irritating as it also changes the colours of unvisited links (this can be a problem on sites which have set the background colour to be the same colour you chose for unvisited links), and still doesn't work on every site.Well, it's very easy to set your browser up to change the colour of visited links only.
