I thought Sydney was under a terrorist attack!
2008-05-11 22:02:00 I'm still shaking as I write this. It's just gone past 6am here in Sydney , and I am thinking back to just how scary it is to be awoken by a huge booming sound at 5:40 in the morning.I really should be used to it by now. The big crashing sound that woke me long before sparrow-fart this morning wasn't an explosion - it was just my ever-considerate Sydney City Council doing it's regular (3 to 4 days a week) task of waking up long before sunrise what is probably the most densely populated residential street in Sydney.Redfern-Waterloo (often referred to as Red-Water) is Sydney's major public housing area. At the far end of my street we have three enormous tower blocks housing well over 1,000 elderly, disabled and sick people, and I live in one of a string of 3-storey "walk-up" blocks of units, housing probably another 500-plus residents. There is no commercial activity at all in my street (aside from a couple of small corner stores). But someone in Sydney City Council decided a year ... More About: Thought , Terrorist
A bitter old man wreaks his revenge on democracy
2008-03-07 05:03:00 It looks like Australia's former Prime Minister, a man so despised by the population that he wasn't just thrown out of office at the last election - he was also thrown out of Parliament, has spent the past 3 months planning his revenge on the people of Australia who used the democratic process to oust him. And he has chosen the lowest of low methods - running down his country while on overseas speaking tours.Mr Howard, in his first public speech since being booted out of office last November, chose a right-wing extremist think-tank in the USA to vent his spleen against the people of Australia. He criticised many of the new Labor government's policies, and strongly suggested that Australia will experience higher unemployment now that his extreme anti-worker industrial relations laws will be overturned. Worse still, he said that businesses will have a lot more industrial relations problems. And that was only a small part of a bitter speech that ran for an hour - goodness knows what ... 2008-02-18 03:24:00 You know you're Australian if ...1. You know the meaning of the word 'girt'.2. You believe that stubbies can be either drunk or worn.3. You think it's normal to have a leader called Kevin.4. You waddle when you walk due to the 53 expired petrol discount vouchers stuffed in your wallet or purse.5. You've made a bong out of your garden hose rather than use it for something illegal such as watering the garden.6. You believe it is appropriate to put a rubber in your son's pencil case when he first attends school.7. When you hear that an American 'roots for his team' you wonder how often and with whom.8. You understand that the phrase 'a group of women wearing black thongs' refers to footwear and may be less alluring than it sounds.9. You pronounce Melbourne as 'Mel-bin'.10. You pronounce Penrith as 'Pen-riff'.11. You believe the 'l' in the word 'Australia' is optional.12. You can translate: 'Dazza and Shazza played Acca Dacca on the way to Maccas.'13. You believe it ...
Australia formally apologises to the Stolen Generation
2008-02-13 02:04:00 I have literally been in tears of both happiness and sadness this morning. What Kevin Rudd did today in our national Parliament marks a momentous day in Australia 's history. A formal, unequivocal apology to our indigenous population for 70 years of harsh, racist national policies which included the forced removal of children from their families for no other reason than the fact they were black. These forced removals occurred all the way up to the 1970's - and many, many of this nation's proud indigenous people have suffered greatly.I count myself very fortunate to have been born white in Australia. Although my childhood was a struggle, and my family was dysfunctional, us children never feared being taken away from our parents who loved us greatly. If I was an Aborigine, the story would be completely different. For the traditional owners of this vast continent, family love and good parenting was not enough to keep your children. If you were black, your children were taken away to ... More About: Stolen
Back to blogging.....
2008-02-13 00:27:00 Sorry I haven't been blogging lately - I've been preoccupied with building my new website (50,000 FREE WALLPAPERS) over the past few weeks. It's been a lot of hard work, but I wanted to make a "real" site, not just a bunch of messy HTML pages, and I think I've very much achieved that. If you are after some nice backgrounds for your PC's desktop, please stop by & check the site out.Now the hard work is over and it's just a half hour or so each day to update the site, so I'm going back to doing something I haven't been doing much of (if any of) lately - putting my opinions on the 'Net. And today is the perfect day to do it - a new era in history has just been written into Australia's history. Read about it in my next post.--If man could be crossed with the cat, it would improve man but deteriorate the cat - Mark Twain AuctionAds Pays You To Display eBay Auctions On Your Site Monetize Your Site With Text Link Ads More About: Blogging , Back
2 free ways to massively increase your site hits
2008-01-27 19:47:00 It's frustrating isn't it? You have a fantastic site that you know people will want to visit, but you just can't seem to get the traffic you think it deserves. Of course, you could pay to advertise it, but why pay when you can get lots of hits to your site for free? Here are 2 free methods I am using to get more visitors to my site. The first is adgridwork - Free Online Advertising. adgridwork is a free reciprocal advertising network. You display ads from other member sites on your site, and your ads will be displayed on other sites. You get displayed on more sites if people click the ads shown on your site, so it is best to have them displayed in a prominent location (I've got them displayed on the home page of 50,000 FREE WALLPAPERS, so every visitor sees them). adgridwork is very reliable, you can have multiple sites, it has site categories, and for those with raunchy sites it also has an adult sites section. I've received a lot of hits to my sites via adgridwork over the pas... More About: Site
50,000 Free Wallpapers is now open!
2008-01-18 18:05:00 Okay folks - if you have been reading my previous posts, you would know that I am having no end of trouble with the hosting of my 20,000 Free Wallpapers site on Blogger. Their computers a couple of weeks ago decided to flag the blog as spam due to the large number of image thumbnail links on it, and despite 2 requests to Blogger customer service I still cannot post any updates to it. It had been reviewed 6 months ago by Blogger and given the green light, so I don't know why their computers flagged it again, since it is obviously not a spam site. (post continues below)Click here to visit my new site: 50,000 FREE WALLPAPERSAccording to Blogger's resumption request page, my locked blog should have been reviewed by a human and resumed within 4 business days. After a week of no action the screen then told me I had to request a review for a second time, and that would take only 2 days. A week after that second request I still don't have access to post to my wallpapers blog (though - fo... More About: Open
Has Blogger lost the plot? Is there an alternative?
2008-01-11 07:53:00 Put your hand up if you have been a long-time Blogger /Blogspot user. Do you think that the service has deteriorated markedly over the past year or so, and the Blogger Team has lost it's focus?I've been with Blogger for about 4 years now, but I am seriously considering changing to another blog hosting platform, because I am sick of Blogger's stuff-ups with my sites, and their extraordinarily slow or useless responses when it comes to responding to customer concerns or problems. So far in the past 2 months I have had one popular wallpaper images blog suspended (sight-unseen) by Blogger's computers (for having too many links). It took them 2 entire weeks to look at my blog, confirm it was perfectly legitimate, and re-activate it. Then last week their computer suspended posting to my most popular wallpapers site, because it also had too many outgoing links (duh! they are thumbnail links to full-sized images). I could still view my blog - I just could not post to it.Here's part of wh... More About: Lost , Alternative , Plot
Sydney brings in 2008 with a bang
2007-12-31 15:46:00 It really great living in the most beautiful city in the world. And New Years Eve makes it even more special. It's now an hour since Sydney welcomed the New Year, and (as usual) the fireworks were mind-blowing.It started with a "prelude" at 9pm, which was mainly for the kids who can't stay up until midnight. But even the 9pm sweetener would have outdone the fireworks displays in most cities around the world. A 10 minute display of amazing pyrotechnics - the kids certainly would not have been disappointed. I think it went close to matching last year's midnight big-bang!Over the past few days I had thought about wondering down to the harbour to have a look at the midnight fireworks display, but I'm a bit averse to crowds, and it was estimated that well over 1 million people would be packing every vantage point along the shoreline. Getting home would have been a hassle too - either an hour or so's walk back to Redfern (which is on the end of the CBD furthest from the harbour), or ... More About: Bang , 2008
Shareapic dumps AdSense - a big loss for Google
2007-12-29 02:55:00 Well, Google should have seen this one coming. Obviously the people in charge of the "Internet Gestapo" don't do much blog reading in their spare time - otherwise they would have seen the growing dissatisfaction with the way AdSense treats it's publishers. Now, AdSense has lost a site that was probably giving more than 10 million page impressions per month. To me that must hurt Google's advertisers.Basically, the story as I can ascertain is:1. On or around the 22nd of December, Google AdSense stopped serving ads to Shareapic. AdSense then closed up shop and went on holidays.2. As Shareapic allows it's 50,000+ members to use their own AdSense publisher code on their image galleries (and get paid for the hits), it was the members who first noticed that they were no longer getting AdSense page impressions on their Shareapic galleries. Personally, I was getting more than 4,000 AdSense impressions per day via Shareapic - now it has dropped to just a few dozen from the couple of little... More About: Adsense , Loss
I hope you all had a great Christmas
2007-12-25 13:42:00 While my readership in the USA are just starting to open their presents on Christmas morning, here in Australia we're just about to go to bed after what has been long day of celebration.I had a very nice Christmas today. It can be a difficult time of year in some ways, as my parents are divorced and it is a bit of a juggling act. Last year I spent Christmas with Mum and saw Dad on New Year's Eve. This year I had Dad over for Christmas and will be seeing Mum tomorrow (Boxing Day). It works out pretty well, though the benefit of having Christmas with Mum is that she likes to do all of the cooking. When Dad stays with me, I get to practice all of my culinary skills, so the day is one that is more work than relaxation :lol:This year I really had to do Christmas dinner on a tight budget - around $60 or so. Sometimes I think that, with all of the welfare the Australian government gives middle and high-income earners, it would be really nice if maybe it could advance needy pensioners $10... Brighten up your Firefox for Christmas
2007-12-23 06:13:00 If you want to add a great Christmas look to your Firefox browser for the festive season, why not brighten it up by using a Christmas theme? They are free to download & easy to install (all you do is click on the "Install Now" button on the page & Firefox will do the rest). Here are 3 nice Christmas themes that really will give a festive look to your desktop while you surf the Net.The first (and I'm using this one at the moment) is Tinseltown. I think it is the best of the three - it has a great Christmas look, with icons that animate as the page loads. It just looks fantastic - click on the thumbnail below for a full-sized screen-shot of it on my PC:The next theme is X-Mas. This one is a bit lighter in colour, but it does have an animated background with snow falling. Unfortunately for me, it is not available for Linux, but Windows users certainly won't have any problems installing it.The third theme is a "lite" version of Xmas - X-Mas (Light). It still has many of the fea...
Camden - Australia's national shame
2007-12-20 14:39:00 Did you see the news on TV tonight? For a moment I thought I had mysteriously been transported out of Australia to some backward place inhabited by bigoted people of extremely low intelligence. Then the TV reporter confirmed my fears. We have a large enclave of brainless, racist idiots living in a town outside of my beautiful Sydney. It's a place called Camden , and today it has shown itself to be a source of national shame.Apparently, the people of Camden want to retain their lifestyle of ignorance and bigotry, and they made it very clear that a school for (shock, horror) Muslims is not welcome in their area. I don't recall any previous protests about proposals to build secular, Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Buddhist or any other types of schools. What a bunch of ignorant arseholes! I was almost crying with shame that my fellow Australians could be so disgusting. They turned up to the local council meeting with the horrifically racist signs, chanting openly racist slogans, and wors... More About: National , Shame
Should I feel sorry for this woman?
2007-12-19 05:52:00 I had an interesting experience at the shopping mall today, and it really made me wonder if I should feel sympathy or contempt for someone. One of my errands was to pick up a prescription from the pharmacy, and there was a lady in front of me at the counter who was experiencing some problems with paying. Although I normally don't eavesdrop, I couldn't really avoid it in this case. What started out as me thinking "the poor woman" became a case of "what a silly, irresponsible person".She wasn't buying an expensive item - it was only $15 or so. But she was trying to use her credit card, which she did not have on her. Apparently it had been misplaced last week. She had reported it to the issuer, and was being sent a new one, but hadn't received it yet. However, she had been given the card number and expiry date over the phone by the issuer. The pharmacist was concerned (understandably - how could she know that the card number was actually the customer's & not a stolen number), re... Improving your web browsing with bookmarklets
2007-12-19 05:19:00 I have recently written a few posts on improving your web browsing experience by using Firefox and it's awesome free add-ons. But there is another free way to improve your web browsing enjoyment, and the best thing about it is that you do not need any specific brand of browser. It works on Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Sea Monkey, Konqueror and any other browser that allows javascript. You don't need to install anything either - all it requires is adding the link to your bookmarks/favorites.What I am talking about is bookmarklets. Bookmarklets are free tools that help with repetitive or otherwise impossible tasks in your web browser. They can do a myriad of things, such as changing page and link colours, removing redirects, zapping unwanted items such as Flash or GIF animations, opening pop-up search boxes, forcing links to open in the same window instead of a new one - the options with bookmarklets are endless. The procedure to use a bookmarklet is very simple. I found a great... More About: Browsing
Firefox Add-On Of The Day - Flashblock
2007-12-14 07:54:00 If you're like me when surfing the web, you probably want your pages to load as quickly as possible. Some of the biggest irritations I find on a lot of sites are huge Flash animations. They can be slow to load, chew up bandwidth, and are often pretty well useless. Some blogs also post a lot of videos from places like YouTube, and it can be a real pain to have several of them on the same page all opening at the same time.Wouldn't it be great if you could choose when you want a Flash animation on a page to play? Well - you can. Just install Firefox 's Flashblock add-on.Flashblock blocks Flash animations from loading automatically. Instead, it puts a place-holder where the animation is that you can click on when you want the animation to load.Flashblock allows you to white-list certain sites, so that Flash animations will play automatically when those pages load. It also has a toolbar button that enables you to disable/enable Flashblock with just one click.I've found Flashblock to b...
John Howard's gone - what will his legacy be?
2007-12-12 14:44:00 It's been two weeks since the government-changing Australian federal election, and today the Electoral Commission finally confirmed what everybody has been wondering - will John Howard become the first Prime Minister in more than 80 years to be voted out of his seat in parliament? Well, he has. The Labor candidate, former journalist Maxine McKew, has claimed the seat of Bennelong by 44,685 votes to Mr Howard's 42,251.John Howard will now go in history as not just Australia's second-longest serving Prime Minister (after Sir Robert Menzies), but also only the second incumbent PM to not just be voted out of office, but also out of parliament. He is now just John Citizen (with a few more perks than the rest of us - and a mighty big pension).Anyway, I was thinking today - John Howard was Prime Minister for 11 years, but what will his legacy be? What has he done over the past decade that has made a permanent change to Australia? I look to some former PM's, and it's easy to think of s...
Has Blogger closed down it's customer service?
2007-12-11 00:20:00 I'm posting this here because I have had no response at all from Blogger /Google, despite 1 email and 2 online automated requests for a very simple action to be done nearly 2 weeks ago.I've been very concerned about the direction Blogger has been going in under the direction of Google recently. Editorial and advertising freedom on Blogger (aka Blogspot) blogs seems to have disappeared, with blogs having their page-rankings massively down-graded if they link to too many other sites. Do you have links to friends on your site? It could be costing you a big Google page-rank penalty, and you might no longer be appearing in Google search results because of your links to friends. Now Google/Blogger have taken to arbitrarily suspending - without notice - blogs with (what Google's computers consider) too many outgoing links. No human review is done at all. One day the blog is there, the next day it is gone. This has affected a massive number of legitimate sites, especially news and picture b... Maxine died yesterday
2007-12-10 12:25:00 A couple of months ago I wrote about my next-door neighbour, Maxine, who had been very ill and it was suspected at the time that she may have cancer. Yesterday , I got the news that she had died in the morning.I still can't believe it happened so fast. Just 8 weeks ago she was walking to the local shops daily. But she started going downhill very rapidly. Apparently she had tried to shield the people she cared about from too much worry, and didn't tell us anywhere near the full story about what was wrong with her. Only 4 weeks ago she told me it was some benign spots that could be easily treated, though she raised my suspicions when she mentioned a round of chemo &/or radiotherapy - they are only rarely used for benign cancers. In reality she had a tumour on her shoulder, was riddled with lung cancer, and had secondary cancers in her liver, kidneys, and spinal column. Not a well lady at all. Before she went to hospital she got quite ill and was almost bedridden. I was helping her ...
Firefox Add-On Of The Day - UnPlug
2007-12-09 16:33:00 Do you like viewing videos on sites such as YouTube, or ones embedded on blogs and other personal sites? Do you also find it to be a nuisance when you love the video, but there is no link to download the video to your hard-drive? Well, here's a Firefox add-on that will get you the download links for most embedded videos so you can save them for later viewing.UnPlug is a video download tool which scans web pages and tells you where media players are getting their data from. UnPlug will then display an HTML link to the file, which you can then save to your PC just as you would any other file. The thing I really like about UnPlug is that it really tries hard to find the right download file. If there are a few possible source locations, it will present a list to you, including a recommendation of which ones are the most likely.I'm finding that I can now download more than 90% of the videos I find on web pages - before I was lucky to be able to find the download link for half of them.U...
Bush: “I hear nothing, I see nothing, I know nothing!”
2007-12-08 09:08:00 George W. Bush is already well known for his childish impersonations of movie and television characters such as Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers movies. Who would imagine Bush impersonating a crazy madman who wants to rule the world?Well, it looks like he has added one more character to his cast of hilarities. Before I explain who (though you may already have guessed from the post title), let me present you with a hypothetical situation:Just say a major car manufacturer releases a new model of car onto the market. But there's a fault the public and authorities don't now about. Apparently, during final-testing, the fuel tanks on a couple of the cars ignited and blew up, setting the cars ablaze. This was all captured on film by the company department doing the testing. However, after panicked discussions, it was decided to destroy the tapes and release the car onto the market, as the cost of re-engineering the design and modifying the cars already built so they could not explode woul... Firefox Add-On Of The Day - Compact Menu 2
2007-12-07 17:41:00 Is your Firefox menu bar getting a bit congested? Maybe you have lots of add-ons and they are causing a bit of a space problem. Obviously, you most likely don't want to have to remove the icons for your useful add-ons from where they are easily accessed, but there is a great alternative way to clear up your menu bar. And that is to install the Compact Menu 2 add-on.Compact Menu 2 changes your menu options (File, Edit, View, Bookmarks, Tools, Help etc) from a line across the menu bar into a drop-down list easily accessed from one button. I've been using it for a couple of years now, and it really has freed up a lot of space on my menu bar.So if you are finding that you are running out of space on your Firefox menu bar, or just want to tidy it up by removing the text menu items from it while still having them easily accessible, then Compact Menu 2 is the perfect add-on to do the job.**The latest version of Firefox is v2.0.0.11. Firefox Add-On Of The Day - Organize Status Bar
2007-12-05 08:35:00 Okay folks. If you're keen user of Firefox Add-ons and have more than a couple of dozen installed, then you may be finding that your status bar (that's the one at the bottom of the browser) is starting to look a little cluttered. Mine reached the stage where I had so many icons in the status bar that I could not even see the address of links when I hovered over them! I desperately needed a way to tidy up my status bar and get rid of some of the icons for those add-ons that I prefer to work in the background, and I found something that does the job perfectly.Today's Firefox Add-on Of The Day is Organize Status Bar.Organize Status Bar is a simple little add-on that you open via the "Tools" menu. When opened, a window will pop up showing all of the elements, both showing and hidden, in your status bar:Your status bar will also show every element while Organize Status Bar is open, and highlight the one currently selected. All you then need to do is choose to show or hide each element...

Firefox Add-On Of The Day - Linkification
2007-12-02 15:28:00 Today's Firefox Add-on Of The Day is Linkification.I find it irritating when I visit a web page and it has links on it, but they are written in text instead of HTML and can't be clicked to open them. Normally the only way to open these text links is to copy and paste them into the address bar. But Linkification fixes this problem easily by turning these plain text links into clickable HTML links. You can have Linkification automatically scan and convert text links (including email addresses) when a page loads, or you can choose to have Linkification convert links only when you press the icon in the status-bar (useful for very large pages with lots of links on them).I've been using Linkification for several years now, and consider it to be a "must-have" Firefox Add-on. It really is a great little time-saver and shows just how much Firefox Add-ons can improve your Internet browsing experience.--The primary cause of failure in electrical appliances is an expired warranty. Firefox Add-On Of The Day - Uppity
2007-11-29 13:39:00 Okay folks - it's been a while since I've done this, but I've decided to bring back my reviews of my favourite Firefox add-ons (formerly known as "extensions). Hopefully I will be able to stick to a schedule of doing a review each day.I've been a user of what I consider to be the best Internet browser in the world, Firefox 2 (it's free and open-source) for about 5 years now, and I couldn't be happier with it. As well as being a very fast, reliable browser, it has something else that really sets it apart from the rest - Add-ons.Add-ons are small pieces of software that can add new features or tiny tweaks to your Firefox. They can add new search engines or dictionaries in other languages, change the look of Firefox with a new theme, or much more.I currently have 93 add-ons installed for my Firefox browser, and they really make life easier. They can do everything from providing a weather report to downloading YouTube videos to monitoring my eBay auctions. So I thought I might hel...
Disturbing video - Waiting For The Guards
2007-11-24 06:59:00 Although this video might disturb some viewers (especially those in the USA), and should not be viewed by those under 14, I consider it to be compulsory viewing.Waiting For The Guards is the first of 3 films commissioned by Amnesty to highlight the enhanced interrogation techniques used by the CIA in the “War on Terror”.The Directors approached the making of the film in a way that has never been done before, choosing to show the reality of Stress Positions in as authentic a way as possible. They filmed a person being put into Stress Positions over a 6 hour period. There is no acting on the part of the “prisoner” – his pain and anguish is for real. This powerful film shows without doubt that what the US administrations say is interrogation is in reality, torture and must be stopped.Amnesty released the film on the Internet before going to theatrical release in independent cinemas in early 2008. They believe this film is a great introduction to what the unsubscribe movement ... More About: Video , The G
Still not sure who to vote for?
2007-11-23 13:17:00 Are you voting in tomorrow's Australian federal election? Are you not sure which of the parties or candidates are most in line with your beliefs, or you just want to work out where your political affiliations lie? Then here's a couple of quizzes that might help you make sense of all the policies and dogma of the main parties and help you choose the candidate you think will best represent your views. The first quiz is at Oz Politics » Test your political inclinations. It's a very thorough quiz which will take you about 5 minutes to answer. I was gently surprised by my results. Although I know I lean to the left, I actually match up closest with the Australian Democrats, with the Greens a close second, and Labor third. The second test (and this will match you with the candidate in your electorate who best matches your views) is GetUp's Candidate Match. According to the results, my best choice would be the local Independent, with The Greens second and Labor again third. The good thi... More About: Vote
Food for thought before you vote
2007-11-23 11:55:00 After suffering 6 long weeks of relentless election campaigning, Australians decide tomorrow who will be leading their great nation for the next 3 years. It's a choice between the incumbent right-wing coalition government of John Howard, or the centre-left Labor Party led by Kevin Rudd. The opinion polls for the past 6 weeks have given Rudd a huge lead, but apparently the coalition has clawed back a lot of ground over the past 24 hours. While Howard has campaigned almost exclusively on the economy and a scare campaign about the opposition, Rudd has generally been positive by campaigning on social issues and his plan for the future of Australia, whilst also claiming to be economically responsible (strengthened by his outburst against the relentless government spending promises over the past few weeks). So here are the issues which have influenced my voting decision for tomorrow, and why I will be voting for either Labor or The Greens as my first preference:1) The war in Iraq. While I ...
