WoOt...tall buildings, mostly white ppl and lots and lots of food!
2008-06-04 06:40:00
I arrived safe in NY and I've been here now for a day and a half and I am loving it. Took the subway and went to Manhattan today, walked around snapping pictures and doing a little shopping. I have met one of my brothers for the first time and was almost stiffened by the tightest hug and the most kisses I've ever gotten by my sister I've not seen in 8 years. lots of fun so far, it's late though and I can't think straight to type much...i'm soo tired...check out my favourite picture from today. Going to the US on "vacation"
2008-05-30 20:11:00
Last month I posted about my plans for a trip overseas. Almost everything has now been decided and I will be leaving for New York on Monday (June 2nd) and returning on Saturday (June 28th). This trip was being planned for a long time and through various ups and downs it’s finally going through. Things are not as good as I want it to be (for one I have very little…or should I say…no money) but although a bit nervous I am looking forward to the experience and meeting a few family members for the first time and seeing others I have not seen for a long while. I am still not certain how a steady connection will work out or if I’ll have the time to spend my usual 10 hours a day in front a computer working or idling on the internet. It will be interesting to see how I manage without my addiction. Right now I am miserable on my last day a work for a while and making notes for a long weekend doing last minute preparations. Bringing Anime and Japanese with me :P I’ll be “borrowing” my sis...

No Surprise, Japan is one of the safest countries in the World
2008-05-29 00:09:00
The Global Peace Index or GPI is a yearly ranking of countries via various peace indicators. The list is compiled by Visionofhumanity.org and ranks grades countries on everything from yearly murder rate to relations with neighboring countries and even military expenditure as a percentage of a countries gross domestic product. Japan is ranked as the fifth most peaceful country in the world right behind Iceland, Denmark, Norway and New Zealand and is followed by Ireland, Portugal, Finland, Luxembourg and Austria - which completes the top 10. Where is Jamaica on the list? Out of the 140 countries ranked in 2008 Jamaica is all the way down at number 96, I'll be honest no surprise there. The surprise though came when I realized that we are ranked higher that the United States and Caribbean neighbors Trinidad and Tobago who are grappling with a series of child murders recently - the most recent being an 8 year old...very very sad.

One Love Jamaica Festival 2008 - Yoyogi Park, Tokyo
2008-05-25 20:52:00
From the pictures and write up in the Jamaica Observer last year's One Love Jamaica festival was a success. While browsing through a few Japan related blogs I realized that it was time again for the One Love Jamaica festival this year and it was on the 17th and 18th of May. Fellow Nintendo fan Sid aka Electric Pig attended at wrote about the event on his blog. Mallocup of irubyourbrog also blogged about the event and from reading your posts I can tell it was a success. image source Electric Pig Post Exerpt A section of Sids post made me laugh out loud after reading it. I thought I'd share it with you. Walking through the stalls, we stopped at the hilarious "Speak like a Jamaican" stand, organised by the Jamaican Embassy people. Here, an "authentic" Jamaican was teaching Japanese people how to speak Jamaican. It was brilliant, like a wierd version of one of my lesson's, with all the embarrassment factor of when one of the elderly teachers asks you to teach the kids "somethin...

Jamaica's Prime Minister Interviewed on HARDtalk
2008-05-20 23:19:00
I just watched an interview with Prime Minister Bruce Golding on HARDtalk, an interview talkshow on the BBC. Just watching the program alone took me through various types of emotions and I would even say mental states. Why is it that certain programs always dig at the negative news and information only? It is for that same reason I started a website called Jamaicapage.com even before I started this blog to focus more of the POSITIVE news and information that happens in Jamaica. I am sure I have referred to posts there in the past. Prime Minister of Jamaica - Bruce Golding Mr golding handled himself well and I must comment him for standing up the the tough questions related to the economic situation in Jamaica, crime and violence and human rights. It's not a matter of political affiliation as I have never voted before and I consider myself politically neutral. I have always admired Mr Golding's ability to keep his composure and tone, speaking clearly while getting his point acros...

Japanese make it 'Jam'-aica - Jamaica Gleaner article
2008-05-12 07:00:00
I am still trying to do my best to highlight any Japan related news items in Jamaica 's local media. About a week ago I made a post about Masaya Hayashi - a music store owner from Japan with a keen interest in our vintage music. Recently I saw another interesting article in the newspaper that talks about why many Japanese nationals are interesting in Jamaica and provides some good statistics and information related to the "Jamaica" scene in Japan. It's not surprising that it's our music and culture is what attract many young Japanese here. My Japanese teacher is featured in the article so check out excerpts from the article below and click the link to read the full version. Article excerpts Taking a musical pilgrimage each year, many Japanese nationals travel to Jamaica, the motherland of reggae and dancehall. With an almost fanatical interest in the culture Japanese visitors eat, sleep and drink in everything Jamaican. In the last 15 years, according to the website of the Emba...

Naruto Shippuuden the Movie Review
2008-05-08 22:00:00
The first Naruto movie which takes place in the Shippuuden timeline when Naruto has gotten older after training with Jiraiya for a while came out in theatres in Japan last year but was recently released on DVD and subbed. It's been a long wait for this movie and it ended in disappointment. The movie follows Naruto, Lee, Neji and Sakura as they are assigned by the fifth hokage Tsunade to protect a priestess from the demon country after a group of evil doers intentionally awake an ancient evil spirit who soon after awakening seek to restore it's full power by acquiring it's body sealed away in a temple far away and then (you guessed it) rule the world. The priestess being protected by the gang from Konoha is the only one that can defeat the demon and so she needs to be escorted to the temple to prevent the demon from reuniting with it's body. There are brief split second appearances from other characters in the Naruto universe. It my opinion this movie is bullshit held togethe...

Tokyo has Secret Underground Warehouses
2008-05-05 18:52:00
Tokyo is more than just a city it is a metropolis. Every thought what would happen if some natural disaster such as an earthquake were to strike Tokyo with close to 13 million people about the place. Check out this video as camera crew follows a city official to a trapdoor hidden in a Tokyo sidewalk, which opens to a narrow stairway leading to a giant underground warehouse stocked with emergency supplies. The underground warehouse in this video is connected to an unnamed station on the Oedo line, Tokyo’s deepest subway. Apparently, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government maintains more than one of these warehouses, but the locations are kept secret. How cool is that? Masaya Hayashi of Japan Keeps coming to Jamaica for good music
2008-05-01 21:47:00
I read an interesting article in a local newspaper recently about a Japan ese record shop and production company owner from Osaka, Japan who has been traveling to Jamaica for the past 18 years to find and buy vintage Jamaican music. It's interesting because there are so many things we here in Jamaica fail to appreciate and promote properly. Instead we now have a mostly crappy local local music scene and a very bad image throughout the world. Article excerpts When his friend called Carpenter came to Jamaica and brought back some vintage music he recalls: "Me shocked, so I save some money and come to Jamaica to buy some good, original tune." Hayashi, who had been a bass player in a reggae band, said he was tired of playing because the artistes always wanted the same rhythm, "like a Sleng Teng". So, in searching for something with a difference, he said: "I came to Jamaica and started listening to some vintage records." Hayashi has invited the likes of Alton Ellis, Prince Buster, Ech...

Beijing Summer Olympics 100 Days away - The TVs you wish you could watch it
2008-04-29 14:22:00
All the top television manufacturers in Japan are busy promotion or putting the finishing touches on brand new models for television in time for the 2008 summer Olympic games and there are a few things they all have in common; they are all supper flat, super light, displayed at trade shows alongside beautiful Asian women, cost a small fortune and only available in Japan. The two main contenders in the slim and sexy line of TVs are the Wooo UT series from Hitachi (Panasonic) and the Aqous X series from Sharp both of which are 3.5 centimeters thick or less. Other industry players like Sony, Matsushita, Toshiba and Mitsubishi Electric are busy working on improving their screens, whether it be colour display improvements, power conservation, or afterimage effects reduction. I wonder how long before these televisions make it to the west and how much will they cost? I am looking to treat myself hopefully later this year with a big plasma screen, I doubt it will be one of these cutting...

New Spring 2008 Anime I will be watching
2008-04-28 22:26:00
Last year was a good year for anime. I enjoyed anime like Seirei no Moribito and Claymore that premiered last spring, Naruto returned with Shippuuden and Gundam 00's first season got better with each episode. It's spring again and as usual brand new anime are premiering and a few are enjoying a continuation of their stories. After looking at write ups, previews, trailers and checking out at least one episode of most of the series that have started so far these are the three series I am most looking forward to: The Tower of Druaga: Aegis of Uruk It has demons, references to gods, great animation, art style, costume design and a somewhat interesting story (at least on paper). I've checked out only one episode so far and althought not overly impressed I'll be sticking around for a few more. Amatsuki This series was recommended by a friend from Japan and I am mostly watching it for "educational purposes"as it is set at the end of the Edo period of Japanese history when Japan w...

Japanese Language related entries recap
2008-04-23 22:52:00
Since my "I shall tame the beast called the Japanese language" post I have been hard at work in my free time putting draft posts together to continue posting about and practicing Japanese through my blog. I have put all my Japanese language study material together in a area of my room and one or both of my recently purchased books are almost always with me at all times. Before I continue on with new posts I thought it would be recap everything for those readers who may not have seen a couple poss and will want to follow when I post more entries related to me (and hopefully you) studying Japanese. brushed up on my hiragana after forgetting a few I used to study Japanese with a very good teacher at least 2 times a week and then only on a Saturday, but this stopped a few months ago when my workload kept increasing, many of my classmates dropped out and the cost for the lessons got more and more expensive. These classes and exams did well to formally introduce me to the language, I m...

My third personal hobby blog is in the works
2008-04-21 07:14:00
I recently launched my photography blog, with it's main purpose being to track my progress as I learn about digital photography properly while having a place to post my pictures and get feedback. Jamaipanese.com is my main blog and the topics cover my love to Japan and mixes in related topics and personal interests such as technology, anime, science, music, sports, Japanese language study, video games and more. The video gaming aspect of that list will soon get a home for itself soon, but don't worry I will still be making video game related posts here on Jamaipanese.com, just don't expect games unrelated to Japanese culture or happenings in anyway, so that means don't expect my FIFA 09 review here to follow up on my review of FIFA 08 or a review of the planned Bioshock sequel but games related Japan or with a heavy Japanese like my soon to be completed review of Folklore and games I am super excited about will be posted here as well. I play a lot of video games so I have alw...

Gundam 00 Season One Review
2008-04-19 19:36:00
The Gundam series is one of the most popular brands in anime with numerous spinoffs, alternate stories, video games, animated movies and a merchandising empire. Gundam 00 is the latest is the linage and with the first season spanning 25 episodes over, this is an overview of the show, my review and my expectations for season 2 without spoiling too much for those who haven’t seen the first season yet and follows up on my Gundam 00 first impressions post. Gundam 00 Series Overview Gundam 00 takes place 300 years in the future, the world is split into 3 main countries/confederacies and the main these of the entire anime is war…..war with giant robots wielding deadly weapons. The 3 main factions in Gundam 00 are the Advanced European Union (AUE) which is like a future Europe with all the current ongoing integration and in-fighting over and done with, the Human Reform League (HRL) which is a union of Russia, China, India, Mongolia and other nearby countries and the Free Nations Union ...

The Oldest Company in the World - *hint*.....it's Japanese
2008-04-15 22:52:00
During my daily browse of blogs related to my interests I ran into a blog post over at Kirainet.com of the oldest company in the world - Kongogumi. Kabushiki Gaisha Kongō Gumi (it's full Japanese name) was started in 578, yes you read right FIVE - SEVEN - EIGHT. What amazes me other than that the company is over 1400 years old is that the same thing the company started doing 1400 years ago it still does today and until a few years ago when it was liquidated and sold to Takamatsu Corporation the company belonged to the same family and it's descendants thought the years...eerr..um or should I say centuries/millennia. Maybe I can contract them to build me a temple some day ^_^, hey you never know :P, we aspiring evil overlords have to always plan for the future! Doing some further reading I found out that the second oldest business in the world is also Japanese and of the top 20 oldest businesses in the world 30% are Japanese *_*. The oldest Jamaican company I could find was t...

I'll be taking my first trip overseas in June
2008-04-10 23:33:00
It sucks that it will not be a trip to Japan but I look at this an important first step to realizing my aim of visiting Japan. As plans are now I will be in the United States in June . I'll be arriving in New Jersey and staying in the tristate area while trying to squeeze short visits to various friends and family members (my fathers side of the family) into my 4 week trip, there are chances I might be taking a fishing trip with an older brother I have yet to meet and only found out about 2 years ago all the way down south in Miami. I am really looking forward to that as I will get the opportunity to pass through various states and snap away with my camera, just hope while taking pictures of everything I'll be seen as an excited tourist and not acquiring intelligence for a terrorist attack :P. Uncle Sam! the first idea for an image to accompany this post ^_^ Speaking of terrorist attacks; my first plans for a trip to the states fell apart in 2002 because of the 9/11 attacks the y...

Japanese study material has arrived and I love 'em!
2008-04-08 17:58:00
I have tonnes of Japanese study material, all kinds of text books, notebooks, workbooks, print-outs, websites and audio CDs but with my busy life it's hard for me to find enough time to study and the little time I get I am tired or mentally drained and prefer my relaxing activities like photography, video games or watching anime. I have been thinking of ways to study more Japanese by making it more fun and I have come up with two ideas. One idea is to combine studying Japanese with other activities I love and the other is to teach the little Japanese I know to a couple of very interested friends and my younger sister. With those in mind I bought a couple Japanese study materials online 2 weeks ago. Japanese + Manga Japanese in ManaLand is a excellent book that teaches Japanese through manga stories, I also got the workbook that opens just like a manga would and has some excellent artwork that makes it fun to learn to read in Japanese. I also finally got some Kana flash cards to ...

ApriPoko - Toshiba's Remote Controller Companion Robot
2008-04-03 21:50:00
If Toshiba has it's way in a few years we will all have cute remotes that will replace the increasingly complicated bricks we use today. As if reaching and occasionally searching for the remote was not enough it seems the remote will now sit and study how we watch TV, be able to distinguish between different members of a household and ask questions to be better able to serve it's function of being a replacement for the conventional remote controller. "Lil Remote Guy" The " lil remote guy" is what I am planning to name mine and in keeping with it's Japanese origins will be super cute and easy to use. Though still in the research and development stage in Toshiba's research centre in Japan the latest model comes equipped with multiple IR Transmitters for controlling various electronics as well as cameras for face recognition. Remote Fighting, Missile Launchers and Gundam! I wonder how it will go when two or more members of a household are fighting over the remote? Will they a...

Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations - Jamaica
2008-04-01 18:55:00
Anthony Bourdain is a chef, author and host of one of best programs on the travel channel. The program is called Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations and documents Antony's trips to various countries and cities worldwide to get a firsthand experience of the place, free of all the promotional hype. I like his program and although I don't watch every episode I remember watching his episode on Paris and Russia. A program recently aired that has Tony visiting Jamaica and Tanya from Talk Jamaican sent me a message telling me how interesting it was and that I should check it out, I did and liked it very much and I recommend that you guys give it a watch as well. Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations - Jamaica is one of the best travel related programs covering Jamaica ever, although there are a few errors here and there and I don't agree with the statements of one of the persons he interviewed I think it was overall a good program that displays a good representation of the culture and the ...

Bleach Anime Movie: Memories of Nobody
2008-03-30 09:00:00
Memories of Nobody is a movie based on the popular Bleach anime and manga. I recently started watching the bleach episodes in the right order and also decided to have a look at the movies released based on the anime. Memories of Nobody is the first Bleach movie and was released in December of 2006, first in Japan and then on DVD there the summer of last year. It was recently announced that the movie will be released in a limited amount of theatres in North America soon with the DVD following not long after. About the film Bleach: Memories of Nobody is headlined by the main hero in the series Kurosaki Ichigo and features popular characters from the series like Captain Hitsugaya, Rukia Kuchiki and my favourite character Kisuke Urahara. Unidentifiable blank spirits start to appear in Ichigo's home town and he and Rukia Kuchiki goes to investigate only to run into a very skilled but unknown soul reaper named Senna. The story follows Ichigo's investigation of Senna, the blank souls m...

Cosplay + English Classes = Cosplish
2008-03-26 21:48:00
There is a brand new English Language school in Tokyo Japan that caters to the needs of Japanese otaku who want to learn English but may refuse to to take regular English classes for fear of being too different and not fitting in. Teachers and students of the school are encouraged to wear costumes of their favourite anime, manga and video game characters and the costume playing is an important part of getting the lesson across and understood by the students. The school was started by Yohei Suzuki and in a recent interview with Reuters stated that "Otaku culture is taking over the world. Everybody reads manga now. So I thought Otaku people in Japan might be interested in Otaku culture outside Japan." Teaching English in Japan is a definite possibility in the future for me, being as big a geek as I am I still having trouble wrapping my mind around this idea...but, given the opportunity I'd at least try it ^_^. I am sure English Language students in Japan wouldn't mind being taugh...

Doraemon now an Official Anime Ambassador
2008-03-24 17:48:00
It's no secret that Japan is a powerhouse in the animation industry and has been the leader long before it created the first feature length anime in 1958. Anime is now a permanent part of Japanese culture with shows covering every conceivable genre and topic. The Japanese government supports anime and the latest showing of support is making Doraemon the first ever anime ambassador of Japan. Anime is used to get the attention of foreigners which will hopefully get them interested enough about the country that they would want to learn more or even visit. About Doraemon Doraemon is a robotic cat from the future who travels back in time to aid a young boy. Although being a comedy the anime has many underlying lessons for it's viewers such as the importance of being honest and from time to time it evens touches on important topics such as pollution and deforestation. Since first being created in 1969 Doraemon has been the recipient of many awards and has been most popular in Asian c...

Bought some Japanese study material
2008-03-22 01:14:00
I haven't been going to Japanese classes since January, I have been busy with work and too broke to pay for the classes. I have been studying and practicing more on my own though and although I try to post more about studying Japanese on my blog it's always hard and time consuming because I have to ensure everything is researched properly and there are no errors. I will be posting more though as I have a couple drafts completed that only need the final touches. After clearing my credit card bill for this month I decided that I needed some more Japanese study material, I went online to by a decent book and some flash cards before long I ended up buying 3 books some flash cards and a video game ^_^, yup a puzzle game to keep my brain exercised to I can memorize Japanese better...good excuse eh?...but I am serious. Flashcards will be useful for practicing with my friends I'll be posting about the books and studying Japanese once they arrive which I hope will be within two weeks. ...
