Its getting HOT in here... so take off all your clothes!
2007-06-06 13:26:00
For those of you that dont know that song, its Nelly "Hot in Here". Well everytime I think about how damn hot this place is, that song comes into my mind. If only it were that easy! If I could just take off some of my clothes, Id be happy. Im from Phoenix, AZ so I'm used to the heat, but my God its a different beast here. Back home this time of year I'd be wearing sandals, shorts and a t-shirt. Probably wouldn't be outside durring the middle of the afternoon unless I had to. Well out here, I HAVE to! Not to mention I HAVE to wear boots, pants, an undershirt, long sleeve jacket, and then throw on 50 or so pounds of gear. Yeah, lets just say that it sucks enough just sitting in the truck with the A/C going (though be it the A/C is not that good). I think Im going to try to find one of those things for my page that displays the current tempature here. We'll see.So today I have decided is probably one of the days that I've never been more hot. I can't really think of ...

Well it is official. In light of the article that was written about my blog, as well as its appearance in the Stars & Stripes MiddleEast edition (which we recieve here in Iraq) I've ended up speaking with many people about my blog. I've discussed things about what should and shouldn't be said as well as other just useful information about just simply portraying the right image. I've gotten word from several in my chain of command that it is ok that I continue my blog, and some have even encouraged me. For that I'm greatful. So I've decided that I will do just that. My old posts will still be inaccessable for now. I'm going to have people review ones that Id like to keep up to make sure they are ok to put on and if there's any corrections that need to be made. Give me time because this is going to take some work. But I should be back to posting regularly here in a few days. Thanks to everyone for the emails and the words of encouragement. Its been great to hear from ev...

Stay tuned as more developes on this....*UPDATE 3 June 2007*I'll include a link to an article written by an excellent writer with many great articles under his belt, Robert Weller (AP Denver). Thank you Robert for this article and even the consideration to write such a thing. I must admit that through conversations with Robert, Matt Burden, as well as others, that I have decided to pursue continuing my blog. Just give me time as I work out the details.http://www.armytimes.com/news/200 7/06/ap_militaryblogs_070602/

Well I just wanted to let everyone know that I will no longer be post blogs on my site anymore and have made my old posts inaccessable. It has come to my attention from others in positions where they have more knowledge on this subject than I, that I was saying things that needed not and should not have been said. For this I am deeply troubled for I never meant for ever such a thing.I began this project simply as a way to keep track of everything that I did while here in Iraq, so that I would have a detailed account of my deployment here. As word spread and people began coming to my site to check things out and with the positive responses I recieved, this project turned from a personal thing to one in which I hoped so allow people a view through a tiny window into the world of the American soldiers fighting a war for peace in a country halfway across the globe. My intention was never to give any information that may be used inadvertantly by anyone, even including our ever more comput...

Just wanted to let yall know that this is probably the last post that I am going to be making for a short little while. I will be heading out to do a mission that will keep me away from computer and internet access for a little bit, so don't worry if Im not posting for a while. I'm not being shut down, and Im definatly OK! :)I will be keeping a brief log while Im gone, so as soon as I get back I will make sure and throw up some posts of anything exciting, or dull, that happened while I was gone. Again I want to thank everyone who reads my blog, and especially those that check in and follow the story of my deployment on a regular basis. I greately appreciate you all taking the time out to even visit my site, yet alone comment on post and send emails of encouragement like many have. Thank you.If you do leave a comment or email while I am gone, I know the comments will not show until I moderate them, so when I return I will add them all to the post/s. BAPD, BPD, I dont know what the acronymn would be, but that is how I feel here sometimes. Especially lately. At most times I certinly don't feel like Im fighting a war. I used to, back in the day where almost a daily occurance of fighting was going on between us and the insurgents. But now, not so much anymore, and I truely feel like an out of place, over powered police force. Not that Im knocking what we're doing, because for the most part, most of what we are doing is nessicary. Its just.... different.Yesterday we ended up going on another raid. We were looking for 3 or 4 particular individuals, one of which was a local militia leader. We had some intel on where these guys might be and we decided to act on it fast. My squad was to be the backup for going inside the building in case they needed more people to go in than what were origionally assigned. They didnt end up needing us, and we were tasked with securing the immediate area around the building and preventing peo...

Alright well for the past few months we have been being worked beyond what one would expect to be worked over here. There have been many occasions where I was a walking (or sitting if in the truck) zombie, due to sleep deprevation and to loss of food intake. It had been taking a toll on us, and even the guys that had come here on the first Iraq deployment, said the schedule now is far worse than what they had back in the earlier days of the war. How is that possible? Especially now when we are SURGING troops into Baghdad and Iraq. Shouldn't that help lighten the load we have to carry?!?Well a couple weeks ago there was a survey that came around electronically that we had to fill out. It was basically a sensing survey to see where the moral of the troops were, what they thought and felt about people and situations. Basically so the people that sit in the cushy chairs and air conditioned offices that never leave the wire can get a feel for what we are experiencing instead of just com...

SGT Norman Lane Tollet6 May 1976 - 28 Apr 2007Well its been a few days since I've made a post, but its also been a few days since I've been able to get online. The past 2 days there has been a communications blackout. Those of you who have been deployed know what this is. Basically the reason our base goes under a communication blackout is because someone from the base has died and the military wants to make sure they are the ones to contact the family of the deceased before word gets out from soldiers over the internet or phones. Well I was sitting in here on the computer getting ready to post some stupid blog about how boering life is now when they came in and told me we were under comm blackout and had to get off.I remeber feeling bad at the time because I hate to have to hear about soldiers dying here, but when theres a comm blackout it really hits close to home. This base I stay at is not very big and so theres really not that many soldiers here. When one of them dies, it rea...

The 'Asset'
2007-04-25 11:26:00
So your probably wondering.... "What the hell is the 'asset'?" right? Well let me explain to you the importance and significance of the 'Asset '. Basically it some something that is so sensitive to our security and our information gathering and collection that I really should kill you for telling you about it. In the event that the 'Asset' should come into enemy hands, it has already been decided that it will be destroyed at all costs. In fact we keep an incindeary gernade (one used to burn sensitive equipment into non-existance) right next to it for just that purpose. Hopefully though, this item of equipment never falls into the hands of the enemy. The repurcussions could be very serious. The 'Asset' is truely amazing. It has helped guide us along our voyage here in Iraq. It will let us know which route is the safest/least traffic bogged. It will let us know wheter we are at the right location for a raid that we must conduct. It is also a great tool for alerting us to potenti...
Going out with a BANG! or 2 or three...
2007-04-21 22:16:00
Alright well the title of this blog is in reference to yesterday, a sad day for myself and all the guys that I work with. I've written many times about this bad area that we go into and almost everytime we are there, something goes down. Now Im sure most people in my shoes would be like, "Hey GREAT! No more getting shot at all the time!" and in that regards, I guess in a way it is a good thing. But what most people dont and cant comprehend is that as an Infantry soldier, my job is close within the enemy and to kill or capture them. If Im not doing that, then Im just sitting on the sidelines. Well, basically what has happened is just that. Our battallions area has changed slightly, and 90% of the bad area, to include the REALLY bad area has been handed over to another company, who until the other day (working with us) had never been shot at or anything. My company will still maintain a small slice, which makes us slightly optimistic. If anything goes down, we will always be right th...

Well yesterday was one hell of a day. We started out the day before when we headed out to go pull overwatch over that shitty area Im always talking about. Pretty uneventful because my squad stayed back to guard the trucks, while the dismounts set in. Not that Im complaining tho because overwatch usually involves a tall building and a lot of stairs, and with all the equipment that we have on us, we have to weight in the neighborhood of 50-60 extra lbs. But yeah, I ended up just sleeping in the truck all night, which sucked because I could not get comfortable for the life of me and mesquitoes were chowing down on me like I was some full course meal!!Well the next morning we went out and did a little dismounted patrol around the area we were staying in. Nothing exciting. Just a lot of walking and not really anything to show for it. When we got back we got a call to head out to the towers that we just built in the bad area. Apparently the IA (Iraqi Army) took a couple days to come occup...

Well if you havent read my post on this before go check it out, entitled "Gernade!!" and you might understand a little more of what Im talking about.Today we went out into the bad area to provide security while some Iraqi Army guard towers got built in that area. I was the TC (Truck Commander) of my vechicle and we were providing secutiry down an alley nearby. I was using my platoon leaders truck which has 2 radios and was tasked with monitoring radio traffic for my platoon and my company at the same time. A very headpounding task listening to 2 different frequencys.Well almost immediatly after getting there a small firefight erupted about 200 meters behind my truck. It was between the Iraqi army and some insurgents, but it was very close and we were all on edge. Of course everyone and they're mother was trying to find out what was going down and wanted information and I was the closest to it and having 2 radios, I was having a hell of a time talking to everyone and relaying...

Friday the 13th will never be the same...
2007-04-13 10:39:00
Friday the 13th, a day that is known to be a day of bad luck. Well it definatly was for a man that I encountered on this day.Basically, I ended up killing a man today. My bullets and my bullets alone were the only ones fired at him. He was about 30 meters from me and I watched as he droped to the ground as my bullets passed through his body. Im not going to share the details of this one, because Im sure you all dont want to really know them, nor do I think I want to really share them. But not only did I kill him, but I had to check his body, move him to be transported away and was his blood off of the transport vechicle. A little more contact with him than I would of wanted, but whatever. Its kind of crazy because Ive always wondered about the act of killing. I read a great book called "On Killing" which talkes about the psycology behind killing, training people to kill and the effects of killing. I think he hit it pretty well on the head with his understanding and study of...

Ok first I'll post the news article and then fill you in on some details.-----U.S. says 20 gunmen killed in Baghdad battleBy Ross ColvinBAGHDAD (Reuters) - At least 20 suspected gunmen were killed in a fierce day-long battle between U.S. and Iraqi troops in central Baghdad on Tuesday in which 16 U.S. soldiers were also wounded, the U.S. military said on Wednesday.Residents of Fadhil district, a violent Sunni insurgent stronghold on the east bank of the Tigris River and the scene of Tuesday's fighting, held funeral processions to bury the bodies of 15 men at the nearby Adhamiya cemeteryThe U.S. military said the battle erupted after gunmen fired on U.S. and Iraqi troops during a routine search operation. The fighting quickly escalated and two U.S. helicopters were hit by ground fire and had to return to base.It was the worst outbreak of violence since U.S. and Iraqi forces launched a major security crackdown in the capital two months ago aimed at curbing rampant sectarian violence ...

al-Sadr calls for attacks on U.S. troopsBy SAAD ABDUL KADIR, Associated Press WriterBAGHDAD - The renegade cleric Muqtada al-Sadr urged Iraqi forces to stop cooperating with the United States and told his guerrilla fighters to concentrate their attacks on American troops rather than Iraqis, according to a statement issued Sunday. The statement, stamped with al-Sadr's official seal, was distributed in the Shiite holy city of Najaf on Sunday ? a day before a large demonstration there, called for by al-Sadr, to mark the fourth anniversary of the fall of Baghdad."You, the Iraqi army and police forces, don't walk alongside the occupiers, because they are your archenemy," the statement said. Its authenticity could not be verified. In the statement, al-Sadr ? who commands an enormous following among Iraq's majority Shiites and has close allies in the Shiite-dominated government ? also encouraged his followers to attack only American forces, not fellow Iraqis."God has ordered you to be pat...

... the mortars that is. Its been almost a month and a half since the almost daily mortars hitting our FOB ended. Such a peaceful month, at least on base.Well this morning when I got back in for this training it was about 6am and I decided to swing by the chowhall to get some good food and to have breakfast which I havent had in a while. I had just got my food and sat down and taken a couple bites of my sandwhich. I poked the straw through my OJ and took a couple more bites of my sandwhich when I heard the explosion. It had been so long that I just figured it was outgoing, but it definatly sounded different and you could see it in everyones faces in the chowhall. Just then someone ran from outside in to the chowhall and yelled "ITS INCOMING!!". God damnit! The chowhall is not sturdy enough to withstand a mortar shell so immediatly everyone gets up and runs to the bunker. I semi-quickly grab what food and drink I can carry and make my way out there. Of course when I get out...

Well for the next 2 weeks my platoon will be out living somewhere doing some special mission, that in all honesty I think is a waste of time and I have no faith in it. Oh well. What can I do right? The nice thing is we actually will have a set schedule over there and a good amount of down time. Basically we pull guard, do patrols, QRF (Quick Reaction Force) and sleep. But the schedule allows for a good amount of down time. We left to go there 2 days ago and its not that bad. The only real bad part is a) no showers and b) no good food. Have to eat either MREs (little packaged meals made by the army but taste awful) or eat the Hajji food, which is alright. I just got lucky and got to head back here to base for some 3 day training Im going to, but then when its done back out I go!But the first night I was there my squad went out on our patrol. We had 4 Iraqi Army guys with us, and so I had 2 of them with me and my team. Kind of interesting considering I dont speak Arabic and...

2007-04-03 04:37:00
Well its official. When I leave Iraq, and Im back home and I come across a dark alley or street at night.... I will NOT go down it. I can already tell. I fucking hate them now without a doubt. Obviously I dont have much control over that here, but I will make sure I never have to see another dark alley when I leave this hell hole. But I cant really talk about what happened and give you all the juicy details I know you want! ;) But what I can say is that we were strolling through the alley in the bad part of town. We hadn't been in there a while, so it was a good feeling walking around, basically saying "What the fuck now!?! We're back bitches!" hahah... Anywho, at some point in the night some stuff went down. Basically I ended up seeing a man get riddled full of bullets from only 10 feet away from me. Seeing him turn into a ragdoll was quite surreal. I must say, thats 2 guys now at a extremely close proximity that I've seen dropped by gunfire and wow, the movies have it ...

Quick termonolgy... Overwatch = Watching OverYeah leave it up to the Army to over simplify things. Another drastic over simplification is when we do radio checks. Someone somewhere some time ago came up with the phrase "Lima Charlie" meaning Loud and Clear. But to say Lima Charlie, it takes 4 syllables and Load and Clear is only 3. But yet, everyone always has to say Lima Charlie. Stupid .Anywho, yesterday was yet another day of boeringness, which is all it seems to be lately. We went to this one place to watch over this other place. Nothing exciting to report, sorry. Just lots of watching and a little bit of being cold. The only thing note worthy was when we were heading back from the place, we were going around in some of the back alleys. The way out was really jacked up and took us way out of the way because we dont want to be seen going to our place of choosing. Well on the way back we decided to try to find a shorter route. We did, but it involved climbing this big na...

No Iraqi should be allowed a weapon WHAT SO EVER!
2007-03-29 00:13:00
So yeah, thats pretty much how I feel after last nights "adventure". I've pretty much felt this way before, but now I am a firm believer is this! I think in the long run it would save more lives, Iraqi and American, if no Iraqi was allowed to have a weapon, and only the Army had them. Here's what happened. We went out to go to this one place and watch over the one area of town and see if anyone was placing IED's along this route that they have been showing up on quiet frequently. In fact the other day on my day off my platoon was out and our lead truck got hit by an IED, but thankfully it was a small one and it pretty much just did minor cosmetic damage to the truck. There was all sorts of little gun battles going on all around us that night and anywho, not everyone went to the place where we were to watch over things, and a few of us ended up going out on a dismounted patrol through the streets and alleys behind where everyone else was, at night. I was the team leader for ...

2007-03-24 13:38:00
Well today started off like any other day. Just a bit of normal patrol stuff. Our first stop was to check out this market area where a month or so ago 2 massive car bombs went off and killed like 100 people. The market is back up and running and we basically check in with the Iraqi Army who runs check points at the entrances to prevent such problems from reoccuring. So we were talking with the IA down at one end of the market when all of a sudden one of the IA pickup trucks comes flying by with this Iraqi soldiers hand that was almost shot off. We asked what happened and found out that it was a sniper. Then we started hearing sniper fire over and over down at the other check point so of course we roll out to check it out.We came up to the intersection where the sniper fire was coming from and I look over to see the civilians pointing up the road to the right. They will usually all point in the direction of Alibaba (bad guy) which helps us out. So I tell everyone, "Hey they're ...

Well today was quite the uneventful day for me. I went out on a normal patrol, and just before lunch they had to pick up some more people but didnt have room, so they dropped me, the other team leader from my squad and another guy at this one place. We were supposed to only be there 2 hours tops and they'd come back for us. Well while we were there we heard a huge long firefight going on just outside the place we were out. Come to find out another platoon from my company was rolling through the same bad area that everythings been going down, and they got in a huge hour long firefight. They estimated 12-15 guys and they were lobbing gernades at them too. They managed to damage 2 of their trucks, but thank god noone got hurt. Well anyways my platoon rolled out to help them out. They got there after everything was over but were out there FOREVER! The whole time we're just stuck chilling at this place. How fun!? So finally they come back and get us like 11 hours later and w...

So yeah today was a pretty uneventful day with the exception to one single event that scared the ever living piss out of me! We had to do some kind of security for this important Iraqi Police guy and anyways we were chilling in this one part of Baghdad. We were just sitting there in the trucks and where my truck was the only thing I had to do was to look at a wall 4 feet away from me. Yeah I know, how exciting. Well I was pretty exhausted because we had been up since like 2am and well, I decided to catch a little powernap. So before I know it Im racked out, sleeping good. I cant remeber what I was dreaming about but next thing I know I hear a loud noise and everyone in the truck yelling GERNADE!!! at the top of their lungs. We've practiced for such an event over and over and basically you get the fuck out of the truck as quickly as possible. Well I snap out of my sleep and hear that and see everyone scrambling for their exits. HOLY SHIT!! Im thinking. Without a seconds hesi...

Staring death in the face...
2007-03-18 05:55:00
Well today was one hell of a day lemme tell you! :) It all started out as just another normal day, as usual. Nothing special really planned. We left really early in the morning, while it was still dark and our first thing to do was to do a little dismounted patrol recon through the back alleys in the bad area that we got into the firefight the other day.Well as we're rolling out of the FOB we get a call over the radio saying they have reports of a mob of 20-25 men armed with AK's preparing to attack this IP station just right up the road from where we are going. Another platoon from our company was there already but hadn't seen anything. So we roll up and relieve them and they head back to base. We dont see anything so we continue on and dismount for our patrol. I was a dismount today, btw.We take one alley way and take it to this one main street and then loop back in the other way on another alley. Its dark and we have our night vision on and moving quietly. Well we en...

Well today was the first of many things. It was a crazy, long day, but it was exciting at the same time. It all started with us heading out on our normal patrols like always. I decided to let my grenadier have a break from driving and be a dismount and I drove for him. Worst day to do that I later found out!!Anyways, we got reports of a group of militia that attacked a group of IA (Iraqi Army) so we headed out to go see if it was still going down. Of course when we got there everyone was gone and nothing was happening. We decided to poke our noses around to see what we could sturr up and we started hearing from the locals that there was a sniper and they knew where he was. Well of course we went to go get his ass. We sent our dismounts out to go check things out while those of us in the trucks rolled around with them for support. They never found the sniper, or a weapon but did find a bunch of sniper sized expended rounds. While they were still looking for this guy we hear...

Alright well yesterday was quite the day. Things went very well and very shitty all at the same time. We ended up being out just shy of 24 hours straight, but in a way it was worth it.So we started off our day with just normal patrols as usual. We stopped by some mosque to listen to a sermon, since it was a friday which is the holy day for muslims. While there some old fat dude with no pants on way laying by one of the trucks. I dont know why but at some point he rolled over and began playing with his asshole, right in front of all of us! WTF!! It was so disgusting. We also ened up in this neighborhood with a million kids. We dismount and they just would not leave us alone. My experiences here in Iraq are really making me not want to ever have kids! lolLater in the day we were just checking things out and heard about this University that the day prior some MPs had been chased out of by protestors. So we headed down there and loaded our shotguns full of the non-lethal rounds...

So today we went out and did our normal patrols and whatnot. I again was a TC, but nothing really special or noteworthy. Just the typical driving around and checking stuff out. Pretty uneventful until the drive back home...We were about 2-3 miles away from our base when all of a sudden I smell burning plastic. I didnt think much of it, because well Iraq just smells likes all sorts of nasty stuff, but then all of a sudden I looked down and saw that there was a crap ton of smoke around me! Oh shit, I thought and began to try to figure out what it was. Thats when it dawned on me that it was this piece of equipment we have on our truckLittle backbrief. This same piece of equipment we've had some trouble with and on another previous patrol when my squad leader was TC the thing started smoking. He turned it off and it was fine. We had it check out, supposedly "fixed" and then back on our way.Anyways, once I figured it was probably that, I turned off the equipment, had everyone ope...

2007-02-28 22:47:00
Well today started off like any other day. Just a patrol with some dismounted and mounted elements. Today I was to be a TC (Truck Commander) which was my 2nd time ever doing it. Basically as a TC im the one in charge of the truck and direct the driver and gunner. On top of that, I was the lead vechicle in the convoy so I was basically the one responsible with getting around using the proper routes and getting to where we needed to go. This is no easy task in Baghdad. Many roads are closed or you need to go to the other side to get places. Its complicated and to make it worse Im usually in the last vechicle and sit in back so all I have is a small side window to see where im going. Even with that I've managed to learn the streets pretty good.Well anyways, it was different but i was able to get around just fine, but the best part is the lead vechicle has this siren on it. Theres like 6 siren settings plus a lever that has a manual siren and this horn thing. But even better ...
