Wubi
2008-05-12 05:41:00
Since my last update on the new computer and Ubuntu, I have done nothing about it except download and burn the new Ubuntu version Hardy Heron. Since getting the new computer might actually take some time, I am thinking of installing Ubuntu in the existing computer itself. This can be accomplished using Wubi - about which I have blogged before. What Wubi does is install Ubuntu on your hard drive, on an existing partition, just like you would any Windows software. The only downside being that disk usage would be high and accessing files would be a tad bit slower. But I think thats a sacrifice you can make for using some great bit of software!!. I also see that the new Ubuntu version has this bundled with it. You can actually install Ubuntu Hardy Heron directly onto the existing Windows partition. In fact, I am going to try that today. Lets see how the disk usage is going to be. Err, I also read that this type of filesystem is more vulnerable to power-shortages. Thats like pulling the ...
Working Class Hero
2008-05-08 01:40:00
I just love this song and think its the best song that John Lennon had written. Bleeding irony and filled with angst!! Beautiful...Parts I love are in bold.As soon as you're born they make you feel smallBy giving you no time instead of it allTill the pain is so big you feel nothing at allA working class hero is something to beA working class hero is something to beThey hurt you at home and they hit you at schoolThey hate you if you're clever and they despise a foolTill you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rulesA working class hero is something to beA working class hero is something to beWhen they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd yearsThen they expect you to pick a careerWhen you can't really function you're so full of fearA working class hero is something to beA working class hero is something to beKeep you doped with religion and sex and TVAnd you think you're so clever and class less and freeBut you're still fucking peasants as far as I can seeA working...

Blu-Ray still selling poorly...
2008-05-02 00:32:00
The Tech Report tells us that Blu-Ray players are still selling poorly even after HD-DVDs demise recently. I mean, there has to come a time when the paying public stop buying new technology or the market forces them to do so. Think that time is now!!Well, lets see...

Imagine
2008-04-28 22:33:00
Me and Manu were discussing this amazing movie - "Once Upon A Time In The West" which stars Charles Bronson as Harmonica. Beautiful movie. It was followed only later by "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly". Love this movie and we are trying to get the soundtrack. Well, Manu has this to say and I totall agree!!Imagine ...A big carpeted room with 2 split ACs (like Renie's Ngl room), a couple of bean bags, sitting on a monday afternoon when the whole world is working, sipping ice cold beer and watching western classics in a 42inch plasma TV with surround speakers....Wouldnt that be something...
Ubuntu and a new computer
2008-04-24 08:14:00
Have been looking to get a new computer for quite some time. Due to some foreseen circumstances ( no money), I have been putting it off for some time. Now I think I can afford one. As usual, my CPU will be an AMD. Read up on the new Phenom processors and don't think they are that great a set of processors. Anyway, too costly. So am settling for the older Athlon core processors. Checking on the net, I also see that I can get a neat 19" Viewsonic LCD monitor for around 9000 bucks. Thats cool. Also saw that the prices of 250 GB Seagate hard drives are amazingly low. And the RAM - drool! drool! as cheap as 1000 bucks for 1GB and at 800MHz speeds. Awesome!!! So thats the basic stuff I need. Oh yeah and most important - the Motherboard. Planning to get an ATX MSI motherboard for close to 6K. Cool. Lets see if I can get it this weekend. And the best for last - install Ubuntu !!! Hardy Heron more specifically. Have already placed the order at ShipIt.Update on the Ubuntu installation - have ...

How can we improve the traffic condition in our city?
2008-04-22 08:14:00
Ok, I should have blogged about this on the 20th as the topic for the day in the ongoing Blogathon. Didn't get time and thought I'd write now. Right now.I have written about traffic problems before on my caustic look at Educated fools. I am writing about traffic problems now. I will be writing about traffic problems in the future. Cause it is going to be PERENNIAL!!. Unless we change our mindset about a lot of things, we cannot really change the traffic problems. In fact, I believe that the roads are not the only problem. Its the attitude. But hey, what isn't?But its quite insane when you look to see that a distance of just 8 kms sometimes can take you an hour!!. I travel by company cab and my drivers are either Schumachers or guys who should be driving bullock carts on dusty dry roads in some village somewhere. There is this particular driver who sits without his back touching the seat, haunched and ready to run!!. He literally takes turns like one does when in a go-kart. I real...

A Counter Culture of Courage
2008-04-08 01:26:00
I read this article on Desicritics.org about a Madhavi Kapoor who wanted to sell her flat in Pune and found that her efforts were being thwarted because her buyer was a Muslim. You can read the whole article here. From this article, I came to know about a poem by Martin Neimoller which goes thus :They came first for the Communists and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a CommunistThen they came for the Jews and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a JewThen they came for the Trade Unionists and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Trade UnionistThen they came for the Catholics and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a CatholicThen they came for me and by that time, there was no one left to speak up!!

April post
2008-04-03 23:21:00
I have been blogging from December 2004 and have posted every month hence! The rates at which I "conjure" up posts is not very steady and I have posted most in the months September and August 2007. Hmm, makes me think why. Rarely, I get this fear that I will not post some month and the blog archive link on my page will be broken! Why do I mention all this? Cause I don't have to worry about this month now!! :)

Henry David Thoreau
2008-03-18 06:57:00
Some of the best lines that I have read in a long time. These are off Walden by Henry David Thoreau ."Say what you have to say, not what you ought." He criticizes conformity: "If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away. By doing these things, men may find happiness and self-fulfillment."

Early morning ride
2008-03-10 23:57:00
Finish night shift. Home 26 kms away from workplace. Early morning chill. Open roads. No traffic Bangalore. Freezing air. Riding jacket to prevent freezing to death. Gloves Anwin gave long back. Open Mysore road. KR Market elevated highway. Dim sunrise. One Royal Enfield Thunderbird. 100 kmph. Speeding away from lazy morning drivers. Heaven!Nothing and I say nothing can be more fun!

My favourite uncle passed away recently. I had come to office on the bike of all days since I was attending a seperate ITIL session on my off day. But it turned out to be a good thing cause I could borrow some money from a friend in office and take the bike directly to Majestic. I knew that I would not get a ticket on any of the private buses so I decided to leave the bike in Majestic and take the SETC transport to Nagercoil. I reached there at around 4:30 and very apprehensively, parked my bike without even the headlock on amongst a gaggle of lesser vehicles. They all looked dusty and old, like bikes parked at the local police station. Seeing my apprehension, the guy assured me that the bike would be fine and that I can even leave my helmet there for a Rs.20 fee. Seeing that I had no other choice, I took up the offer and paid Rs.20 for the bike too. He asked when I would be back and I said on the second morning. I guess he has seen a lot of people like that and said nothing.Getting...

Asko Parpola
2008-03-04 20:36:00
Yesterday's The Hindu had an interesting interview with Asko Parpola, who is an eminent Indologist. In this article, he explains why he thinks that ‘I do not believe in a full decipherment’ of the Indus script. Of something that has been of debate very recently after a certain political party came into power, he has this to say - "I have always found it most unfortunate that the past is politicised and used for other than scholarly purposes. As far as the Aryan-Dravidian dichotomy is concerned, it must be remembered that ‘Aryan’ and ‘Dravidian’ are linguistic and not racial terms". This is actually a very interesting line to take. Instead of lambasting the people who used the Aryan Invasion fact/theory for political mileage, he answers - "There is no pure race, and Aryan and Dravidian speakers have been in contact with each other in South Asia from the start of their encounter. Ever since the Aryan speakers came to India from Central Asia, this militarily powerful minor...
Indiblogger Banglore Bloggers meet
2008-02-18 18:35:00
Wow, the Indiblogger Bangalore Blogger meet was awesome. We had a good turnout and the meeting was just too cool - method and madness combined as Sandil of Mutiny has put it. Renie and Anwin prepared well for this meet and I had fun doing the skit and trying to let people know what Indiblogger was about. Good going guys. Was good to see us all turn up in numbers and it was good to have Siva, Jacinth also in, along with the rest of the gang. Nice going guys and hope we have more in the future. This is just a general post, I am hoping to post a more in depth review soon.

I never seem to get enough of this song....I have posted the lyrics before...here it is againMy victims are rich or poor, young or old, strong or weakI 'cause millions of accidents, I am cancer in your bonesI fathered the lie, twist what you say, speak not the truthI am insidious impartial, deep inside your chromosomesI take what you love and leave you in tearsI imprison your soul, your hopes are my gamesI strip you of pride, my promise is in vainWhile you burn at the stake, I dance with the flamesI bring poverty sickness and deathA worthless handshake, the slickest thief, I steal your wealthI answer your prayers for greed and lustMore than evil I laugh at your trustI am more powerful than all the armies of the worldI am more violent than violence, more deadly than deathI have destroyed more men than all the nation's warsI am relentless, unpredictable waiting for your last breathMore evil than violenceMore violent than deathMore deadly than manYeah yeah, I'm evil, I amMy kingdom ...

Life....
2008-02-02 21:00:00
I've gone through some weird shit these past few months and I really believe that I have come out of it all a stronger and much harder man. Stronger, yes good. But I am kinda sad that I am a harder man at the end of it all. Things that I used to care about don't bother me anymore. Happenings around me that nearly used to move me to tears I don't even notice anymore. I just don't give a FUCK anymore. But today, I met someone who really made me think. I met one of J's friends from office. She is a nice, pyt. Just all of atleast 4 years younger to me. She takes life as it comes. She downloads movies. Makes music. Parties. Deep down even, she is strong. She's got less than 5 years left to live. But she believes that there is more to life than just to carry bad baggage around and feel bad about it. I feel good to have met someone like her!!.

Force India
2008-02-02 04:38:00
Damn, I don't give a damn about this Force India team. A team that is named so, but without an Indian driver for it!!. I don't see any reason why Mallya decided not to have Narain race for him. Some internal wrangling perhaps. Even his manager, Mark Perkins said - "He is the best available racer in the country and Mallya helped him when Narain began his career. But I don't know why he is not considering his countryman now". Its kinda sad to see one Indian with so much of a passion for the sport being sidelined by his own country-man. Reportedly Narain even said that he didn't mind not racing for Force India but felt bad that he was not even given a chance of a test ride!!!. This at a time when Ralf was given a chance. Now you know where I place Ralf when it comes to F1 driving!!.But there has been a change in the way another team is thinking. It looks like there will be a Super Aguri with another Indian consortium for a possible investment. The Indian consortium is led by the Sp...

Rock concerts
2008-01-28 03:49:00
Well, well. Iron Maiden were here last year for the first time and we all had an amazing time preparing ourselves and to herald the coming of the rock gods. They are back this time, but only to Mumbai and they are kicking off their world tour from there. Even better, they will be playing only their old songs. But hell, I can't make it even though all my friends are going. Damn!! But have fun guys and rock on!!!But a small consolation, planning to make it to the "Rock In India" festival featuring Megadeth and Machine Head.

Reliance Wimax Broadband
2008-01-20 14:47:00
Well, a lot of blogs and sites have trashed Reliance 's Wimax service and there have been a lot of comments on these sites from existing users pouring out their woes. But since this is the only option I had to get an internet connection from, I opted for the same and applied. All they needed was an address proof (original copy. I gave my mobile bill), Identity card copy and a local cheque for 500 bucks. I had also checked whether my area was covered and was told it was. A little skeptic, I gave the documents to the guy and also was told that it would take 2 weeks since their equipment was out of stock. I didn't mind and said that was fine. But you gotta appreciate them, I got the equipment in a week and it was fixed the same day. And I checked the connection. Damn, beautiful I must say. Neat speeds and a very steady connection. I get a normal speed of 40KB/sec, which is even better than Airtel I must say.I have always been a little skeptic of Reliance all these years. I think this ...

Third ride with RTMC
2008-01-13 13:36:00
Damn, finally made another ride with the RTMC (Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Club). I think I actually went on my first ride with the RTMC close to a year back. I did go another time but was unable to ride with them since then due to some problems. So finally decided to join them on the announce ride ( a ride that they organize to someplace closeby, mainly for noobs). The place was Machinebelli, a dam/reservoir some 50 kms away from Bangalore. The group was sizeable with some old hands thrown in. But what I really liked this time was the way everyone rode this time. Not like noobs at all. Neat hard ride, at the end of which we had our usual introduction session. Ride back was neat and reached home around 2 in the afternoon. Good ride. Pics up soon.
A Cricketer and a Gentleman
2008-01-13 13:30:00
The big fight between the Australian and Indian cricket teams may be drawing to a close with Ricky Ponting actually being surprised by the number of people unhappy with their ugly tactics - even back home!. Looks like the Aussies have received a lot of bad press about their dirty behaviour from all over the world!. I kinda think its time that they got some too. I mean, all these years I never liked the Aussies only cause of the way they played their game. McGrath was one of my most hated players cause of his tendency to shoot off his mouth after every delivery. And the point of the whole thing is that no one ever brought a complaint against them about sledging and the ICC also has done nothing about it. But in the middle of this mud-slinging test series, I think one man has earned my respect - Anil Kumble. In his article in the "Hindustan Times", he tells of how he has decided to call off an agreement he had made with Ricky Ponting. In this agreement, they had decided that whatever ...
