More Political Double Talk
2007-05-17 15:49:00
Or whatever you call it when politicians aren't being on the level with you. Just read an article in the Guelph Mercury about the new IT center. From it:"In Guelph, our energy and telecommunications needs are met; those two things make the city an ideal location," Phillips said.Is it just me, or does that statement reek of "We've got nothing"? With regards to energy, the only possible reason I could see moving to Guelph would be for the Guelph Dam. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, the electricity generated there is part of a Micro-Hydro Demonstration Project. I doubt that it produces a significant amount, or that it's even wired into the grid. (Trust me, if you saw the Guelph Dam, you'd have the same doubts as well).

Update: Guelph IT Center
2007-05-17 15:16:00
Well, not really. An "update" would imply that I have new data. But, everyone involved is remaining amazingly tight-lipped. Since I first read about the new provincial IT center that's being built in Guelph, I've tried contacting the parties involved: mainly, the 2 people listed as contacts on the Ministry of Government Services press release. I have yet to hear back from them, even though I've left multiple voice-mails. I've also tried contact Liz Sandals, the local MPP. She (that is, her admin. assistant) was nice enough to forward my request to the MGS.Today I fired off an email to to the parties involved on the Guelph side of the transaction. Transcript below:Date: Thu, 17 May 2007 09:15:41 -0400To: mayor@guelph.ca, peter.cartwright@guelph.ca,jim.mairs@guel ph.caSubject: Due Dilligence re: Guelph's new IT center.Hello -I'm hoping that one of you will be able to help(as I've tried contacting the Ministry of Government Services to no avail). Is there any due diligence ...

You Mean The TV Does That?
2007-05-17 04:04:00
My mother-in-law has been visiting for the past week and a half. It's like we've discovered that there's more on the TV than Gears of War and Treehouse. It's been turned on more in the evenings over the past week than it's been on in the previous 2 months. At the same time, I'm remembering shows like American Idol and Dancing With The Stars. Didn't want those memories back.

Guelph, Center Of The World!
2007-05-15 21:47:00
Not really. But, apparently the Ontario government will be building a new information technology center in Guelph. Now, this blog hasn't been around very long, so I haven't had enough time to seriously bitch about Guelph. Suffice to say, if "good things" were Column A, and "bad things" were Column B, a description of Guelph would be comprised of mainly Column B items.I'm currently waiting for a response from GovOnt, as the reasons listed on their web page are confusing:access to hydro infrastructureaccess to telecommunications infrastructurean ability to meet the government’s information technology needshome to a diverse range of corporate leaders in the fields of advanced manufacturing, the life sciences sector and government and educational spheresThe reasons themselves make sense - BUT THEY CAN BE APPLIED TO ANY CITY! Hell, why build in Guelph when Kitchener (home of Research In Motion, and one of the best universities for a CompSci degree) is only half an hour away? Or, ...
