CNN Just Doesn't Understand
2008-03-16 14:13:00 From an article about the space station:"The Canadian-built robot, named Dextre, will stand 12 feet and have a mass of 3,400 pounds when it's fully assembled."If I'm remembering my high school physics correctly (and it could be that I'm not - there's been a lot of booze between then & now), the mass of an object is a measurement of how much is there - it should be measured in kilograms. The weight of an objects is how much a particular mass weighs under acceleration (ie: gravity), and should be measured in pounds.Running the calculations, the Dextre will have a mass of approx. 1542 kg (assuming that it weighs 3400 pounds on the surface of the Earth). In space, it will weigh 0 lbs.(Here's some backup for the 1542 figure)"But, semantics is all I have to quibble about!" More About: Understand
Please Read: My Lawyer May Be Homeless Soon!
2008-03-13 15:07:00 As I've mentioned before, my former lawyer has recently been informed that he's going to be laid off in the middle of the summer. Now, as funny as that may be (after all, there are some comics floating around about the situation), there is a serious consequence to this. My lawyer and his wife (who are trying to start a family), need to sell their condo pronto.. Otherwise, they run the risk of defaulting on their mortgage when his job runs out. Please, visit the mls page (and check out the photos on flickr).. If you're looking for a condo in downtown Toronto, this is one that's worth looking at!For kicks, here are the comics again: More About: Lawyer , Read , Homeless
Alone
2008-03-12 15:12:00 It's the March Break, so my wife took all the kids back to Guelph so they can visit with their friends/family. I am coming to realize that this house is too large for 1 person to live.. And, that I have been converted to a social being - that is, I miss my family. Here is a video of a creepy japanese robot called the CB2. The noise that it makes is fucked up.

Gary Gygax Is Dead
2008-03-04 20:58:00 Sadly, Gary Gygax passed away today. It's hard to imagine someone who has had a larger effect on a genre (role playing) than he.. Every time I play Oblivion (or any RPG for that matter), I inevitably think of Dungeons & Dragons. Which leads to me thinking about the first copy I borrowed from the library. Which I promptly photocopied at school at the tender age of 10 (once a pirate, always a pirate). As someone on digg commented, "We all have to fail the Saving Throw Vs. Death some time" More About: Dead

Life At Piss End
2008-02-25 15:46:00 My former lawyer has been given notice that he MAY be laid off around the mid-summer time frame. To "celebrate" the mood of impending doom, I'm going to create a series of comics for him (in Get Yo' War On style). Here's the first strip: More About: Life , Piss
Letter To Toronto Star Editor
2008-02-15 17:46:00 In regards to this article - http://www.thestar.com/News/Ontario/artic le/303897:I guess it won't be long before the majority of the Hell's Angels (and other biker gangs) convert to Sikhism. Then they'll have the best of both worlds - no motorcycle helmets, and be allowed to carry knives.I can appreciate Mr. Badesha's desire to remain true to his faith. However, in a society with publicly funded safety net (I'm talking about our health care system), we are all our brother's keepers. While Mr. Badesha is willing to "take the risk to follow his Sikh tenets", the question remains: who's going to pay for his health care (and disability benefits) if and when he is in a serious accident? Finally, his point about people dying in car accidents is nonsensical. Yes, fatalities occur in automobiles. However, the number of deaths would vastly increase if people didn't follow the proper safety measures - which is why people are ticketed for not wearing seat belts, speeding, etc.I th... Goodbye Nathan Bridger
2008-02-11 05:28:00 Roy Scheider is dead. Since I've never seen Jaws, my main exposure to him was through the sci-fi show Seaquest DSV - also know as "underwater Star Trek" - where he played Captain Nathan Bridger. So sad. More About: Goodbye

WoW Guilds
2008-02-07 06:00:00 It's strange how you can make friendships in something as silly as an online game.. For the past half a year I've been a member of the Warcraft guild The Crusaders.. Unfortunately, it was disbanded a couple hours ago.. Absolute bummer.

2008-02-04 15:21:00 CNN is running this article about Iran firing (or attempting to fire) a rocket into space. Along with it, they attached this photo of Ahmadinejad:C'mon.. He's wearing fricking 3-d goggles! You can't be evil if you wear them!
Remember, Remember the 31st of January...
2008-01-31 18:06:00 Make has a post about how some artists have put up LEDs all over Boston. Awesome!I guess a better "V For Vendetta" style rhyme would be:Be wary, Be waryIt's the 31st of January The Boston Bomb ScareArrested for a hoaxThey treated it as a jokeAnd answered with "70s hair"
"That's not a hair question. I'm sorry."
2008-01-31 04:57:00 Now, I know I said that today's entry would be about 1970s hairstyles.. But it wouldn't feel right if I didn't link to the CNN article about the incident that started it all.So: during the 1970s, the majority of people used a hairstyle known as the 'afro'. The main idea behind this style was to let your hair grow in a manner that can only be described as 'pouffy'. My attorney used to have an afro. Then he sobered up. Here are some pictures of afros. Those that did not have afros were bald.People who still sport afros are either drug addicts or "retros". In both cases, they are to be avoided. Volcano Vs. Lucite
2008-01-30 16:41:00 I've always told members of my family that I wanted my body thrown into lava when I died.. But recently I've been rethinking that idea. Having my corpse encased in lucite is a very appealing idea. I could be like a modern day Lenin! I'd just have to hope that I wasn't placed in a demeaning pose. The largest problem is how to go about it. I've not been able to find any businesses that would do something like this.. The only thing I've found out is that you can by cans of clear polymer resin at Michaels.. Except, by my calculations, my family would need 441 32oz jars to completely encase my remains. And, they'd actually have to handle my body..Tomorrow is the 1 year anniversary of the Boston Mooninite Scare. In honor of that, tomorrows post will be about 70's hairstyles. More About: Volcano

ANONYMOUS vs Scientology
2008-01-25 16:30:00 Recently, a group on the Information Superhighway known as ANONYMOUS has decided to destroy the dangerous cult of Scientology . They are getting a lot of coverage from major news networks. It makes me feel like we're starting to live in some sort of cyberpunk/Gibson-y era.. Self-organizing groups of malcontents waging subversive information wars against evil empires..This weekend I am building a work bench in my garage. I have begun to amass a massive collection of tools. I need a place to use/store them. More About: Anonymous , Anon
Goddamn Crazy Billionaires
2008-01-24 18:17:00 I forget how I found it (probably reading through the MAKE zine blog), but I've spent a bit of time reading about the Light Sharpener - a giant mirrored parabolic dish. At one point, some guy toasts a copy of Action Comics #1 (for those not in the know, it's the issue where Superman makes his debut). Crazy ! More About: Billionaires
Modified Milk Ingredients
2008-01-24 15:47:00 No posts in a long time.. I need to get my slacker ass in gear. Was reading the ingredients of some snack last night.. Said it contained "Modified Milk Ingredients ".. For a while I was puzzled about this: what are the ingredients of milk? Do companies have gigantic machines to break milk down into it's component parts? How are these parts modified? Then my wife pointed out that it was likely meant powdered milk, and the universe resumed normality.
