Could You Live With Just 100 Things?
2007-09-21 04:06:00
I’ve been seeing a lot of posts recently about people trying to pare their “stuff” down to just 100 things. I first saw it over on Stuck in Stuff, and then again on Zen Habits (which also talked about The Rucksack Life, a blog I hadn’t yet heard of). I’ve been considering paring down my “stuff” ...

Calling America: Looking for Stories of the Real America
2007-09-18 13:51:00
Calling America is a new project being done by a couple of British guys that are looking to find out what the U.S. is really like, not just what Hollywood portrays. Calling America hopes to make a small contribution to exploring the development of culture through new Internet media. In a broad sense Calling America is ...

100 Things You Can Make Yourself
2007-08-22 13:45:00
Simply Thrifty has a great list of 100 things you can make yourself. While some of them are a bit obvious (spaghetti sauce, applesauce and most of the other food items), there are some that you might be less likely to think of as a DIY project, like a camera or solar power generator. I’ll add ...

My Take on Five Controversial Productivity Ideas
2007-08-18 15:50:00
Lifehack just put up “Five Prod uctivity Ideas I’m Not Buying (Yet?)“. It’s an interesting read, but I have to say that I don’t necessarily agree. Mind Mapping tops the list. I think that mind mapping can be an effective tool for some circumstances. When trying to brainstorm ideas or solutions, mind mapping can be useful. If I’m trying to come up with 100 new topics for blog posts, I’ll sometimes start a mind map. But, I don’t break out the colored pencils, I don’t spend hours making it “pretty”, and I generally turn it into a list when I’m finished. If I feel like being creative, I might take a highlighter to it when I’m finished to make certain parts stand out. Overall, mind mapping is great for creativity, not so much for productivity. The 80/20 Rule is next. This is one that I have to say I disagree with Lifehack. The 80/20 rule is all about eliminating the majority of things so that you can focus on t...

Habit Tracking Made Easy
2007-08-10 00:13:00
I hate adding recurring daily tasks to my daily to-do list. I like to keep my to-do list kinda short, and try to only put things on that are really necessary for that day. But, at the same time, I’d like to be able to track how often I’m actually getting all those recurring tasks ...

Embracing the IKEA Culture
2007-07-28 14:09:00
So, we’re taking a trip to IKEA today with my niece and her boyfriend. This will be their first time to IKEA (this will be an eye-opening experience), and our third trip (but the first to the store we’re going to). For anyone who hasn’t been to IKEA, it is a completely different experience than virtually ...

2007-07-28 13:55:00
I currently keep the RSS feeds I read on a daily basis on my iGoogle homepage. I organize them with tabs. I have a blogging tab, a real estate tab, a lifestyle & productivity tab, and a business tab. I thought I would share the lifestyle & productivity tab with my readers, as there may ...

A Really Great Web 2.0 Directory
2007-07-17 01:23:00
I love the whole Web 2.0 phenomenon (and the Web 3.0 fantasy, which will hopefully become reality sooner rather than later) and am always on the lookout for new Web 2.0 sites, apps and other interesting bits online. Simple Spark (”Cool Stuff for Your Life Online”) is a great directory of Web 2.0 apps. There are ...

Tame your to-do list
2007-07-06 15:17:00
Some days when I get in to the office, I take one look at my to-do list and shudder. Sometimes there may be 10-20 things that I need to get done in a day. While there are many out there who say that you should simply whittle your list down to the three most important ...

Quiet your mind
2007-06-29 13:26:00
Life is complex, stressful, and tough sometimes (okay, most of the time). Often we don’t even know what’s wrong, because there are so many possible culprits. The stress that builds up is often released in unproductive and often harmful ways. Often, you need to quiet your mind so that you can get to the bottom of ...

The Original Structured Procrastination
2007-06-22 02:44:00
I came across a very interesting essay the other day written in 1949 by Robert Benchley entitled How to Get Things Done. The essay basically focuses on the art of structured procrastination. The breakdown of this technique is pretty simple. 1. Make a list on Monday morning of the things you need to get done during the ...

Is Goal Setting Necessary?
2007-06-21 03:36:00
A lot is said nowadays about setting goals. You have to have goals in order to get ahead in life, and if you don’t have goals you’ll never amount to anything. But, are goals really necessary? If you don’t set specific goals, will your life simply stagnate where it is now? Will you ever get ahead? The ...

The power of saying ?thank you?
2007-06-02 16:18:00
A lot of manners and basic etiquette in this country seem to be long forgotten. No one sends “thank you” notes anymore (hell, no one even shoots off a quick email to say thank you most of the time). People don’t say “please”, they don’t say “excuse me”, and they generally ignore everyone around them. ...

Why college might not be the best idea for you
2007-05-31 01:47:00
College is not for everyone, and often traditional college can do more harm than good depending on what your overall goals are. Think long and hard about why you want to go to college. Going to college straight out of high school is usually a good idea. The overall college experience can be a valuable ...

Applying Buddhist Principles to Business - The Noble Eight-Fold Path
2007-05-23 03:02:00
The Noble Eight Fold Path is a Buddhist philosophy that aims to direct the lives of it’s followers. As implied, there are eight parts to the path, and each concept can be applied to how you do business. 1. Right speech. Right speech means to only speak truth, and to speak in a nonharmful, unexagerated manner. This ...

My Productivity System
2007-05-19 15:51:00
I’m not one for Getting Things Done. The system is completely overkill for what I do, and pretty much any system that is that complicated (ie, you need to read an entire book about it) just isn’t worth the time to learn it unless you REALLY need it. But, with all of the hype about it, ...

6 Ways to Make Your Cell Phone Work FOR You
2007-05-17 03:27:00
Cell phones are the best, worst invention of the 20th century. In 1990, very very few people had cell phones and coverage was pretty iffy even in metropolitan areas. In 1996, my parents bought a bag phone for use when my dad would travel (mostly hunting trips). He would have to drive to the top ...

Ultimate productivity - getting paid to do things you already do
2007-05-14 04:42:00
Nothing could be better than getting paid for doing something you already do. Agloco is a new company that is going to pay members for surfing the internet. The only catch is that you have to download their “viewbar” (a little sidebar that sits at the bottom of your browser) that displays ads. It’s not spyware, ...

2007-05-13 08:13:00
Ah, the zone. Everyone’s got one. It’s that place you go where you reach peak productivity and creativity. Where ideas just flow from your head, and you can accomplish insane amounts of work in next to no time. I’m one of those people who has a hard time getting into the zone, but once I’m ...

Top 5 Group Writing Project from Problogger - My Favorites
2007-05-12 03:58:00
Problogger has been running a group writing project this week for “Top 5″ lists (here’s day 1, day 2, day 3 and day 4). It’s been really interesting, and almost 900 entries were submitted (that’s a huge number, and unfortunately I wasn’t able to look through all of them, so these are mostly just one’s ...

Head to Head between Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, and Hotmail
2007-05-12 00:58:00
Web Worker Daily has a head to head post comparing Yahoo ! Mail , Gmail and Hotmail. Pretty interesting… I’ve never really used Yahoo! Mail, so I can’t really comment on that (although I’ve heard that it’s in their terms of service that they sell your information to other companies — if someone could confirm that would be ...

Top 5 ways to spark your creativity
2007-05-11 05:07:00
Creativity can be really challenging especially when you’re trying to force it. It generally needs to flow from somewhere unknown, and until you get into a certain rythm, it’s virtually impossible to come up with any kind of creative idea that you’re actually happy with. Here are my top 5 ways to get my own creative ...
