Just some facts about RODEO abuse
2007-07-17 23:31:00
Rodeo: Cruelty for a Buck Rodeos are promoted as rough-and-tough exercises of human skill and courage in conquering the fierce, untamed beasts of the Wild West. In reality, rodeos are nothing more than manipulative displays of human domination over animals, thinly disguised as entertainment. What began in the 1800s as a skill contest among cowboys has become a show motivated by greed and big profits.(1) The StuntsStandard rodeo events include calf roping, steer wrestling, bareback horse and bull riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, steer roping, and barrel racing.(2) The animals used in rodeos are captive performers. Most are relatively tame but understandably distrustful of humans because of the harsh treatment that they have received. Many of these animals are not aggressive by nature; they are physically provoked into displaying “wild” behavior in order to make the cowboys look brave. Tools of TormentElectric prods, spurs, and bucking straps are used to ...

Dogs Used as Shark Bait on French Island
2007-07-10 07:12:00
By Maryann Mottfor National Geographic NewsOctober 19, 2005 Live and dead dogs and cats are being used as shark bait by amateur fishers on the French -controlled island of Réunion, according to animal-welfare organizations and local authorities. The small volcanic island off Africa's east coast is bursting with stray dogs—upward of 150,000, says Reha Hutin, president of the Paris-based Fondation 30 Millions d'Amis (the Thirty Million Friends Foundation). Hutin sent a film crew to Réunion this summer to obtain proof that live animals were being used as shark bait. The goal was to expose the practice on the animal rights group's weekly television show.It didn't take long for the film crew to find three separate cases, she said.A videotape and photographs show the dogs with multiple hooks sunk deep into their paws and snouts. "From then on everyone started to take the whole story seriously and realized it was true," Hutin said. Photographic Eviden...

Emergency Care for Baby Birds
2007-06-01 09:58:00
If you discover abandoned baby birds (lacking feathers and unable to hop), the first and most important thing to do is make sure the birds are warm. Birds that have fallen out of the nest chill very quickly and are susceptible to pneumonia. You can warm up a small songbird easily by holding it in your hands. Next, you should identify the species of the abandoned nestling. The two most common species are the House Sparrow and the European Starling. House Sparrow Clear chirp similar to that of an adult Orange gape inside the mouth Rather small nestling Starling Noisy squawking bird with a slurred chirp Large, bright yellow bill phlanges (mouth flaps), which can be as large as 1/8 inch wideOrange gape inside mouthLarger nestling If the nestling does not fit the above descriptions, it is probably a bird that cannot be kept legally. You should contact a licensed wildlife rehabiltator, w...

2007-05-26 10:39:00
May 24, 2007A lovely Palomino mare, an adorable pinto buckskin stallion and a handsome black Tennessee Walker gelding are among a lucky group of equines that were seized and rehabilitated as the result of a cruelty investigation in Pike County, Ga. in February 2007.About 60 of the now-healthy horses, donkeys and burros will be available for purchase at the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Equine Auction scheduled for noon on June 2 at the agency's Equine Facility in Mansfield, Ga."These horses have been through quite an ordeal over the last few months. We are glad they've fully recovered and will have a second chance to find a loving owner who can give them the proper care they deserve", said Keith Dane, director of Equine Protection for The Humane Society of the United States.  The animals are part of a group of 99 equines that were seized from the property of Roger Prater and Bobbie Allison in Pike County, Ga. earlier this year, when it was disc...

CPR for Pets
2007-05-18 09:47:00
Listed below are the steps to follow in conducting animal CPR from the "Pet First Aid" book by the American Red Cross and the Humane Society of the United States. This method is used to treat an animal who is not breathing or has no heartbeat. You must follow the ABC (airway, breathing, circulation) order when attempting CPR. A=Airway Does the animal have an open airway? (The airway is the passage the animal breathes through. Check to see if the throat and mouth are clear of foreign objects.) If the answer is YES, go to Breathing. If the answer in NO, you need to open the airway. Do the following: 1. Lay the animal down, on either side. 2. Gently tilt the head slightly back to extend the neck and head. 3. Pull the tongue between the front teeth. 4. Use your finger to check for and remove any foreign material or vomit from the mouth. B=Breathing Is the animal breathing? If the ans...

If You See a Turtle in the Road
2007-05-16 03:01:00
Have you ever been driving down the road when that tire fragment in the distance begins to move? As you get closer, you realize that the tire fragment is actually a turtle, slowly attempting to cross the highway. Turtle s often make this perilous journey to get to a good, sunny location with loose soil in which to lay eggs, and to return back to familiar territory—be it a woodland, pond or desert burrow. It is in just this situation that so many turtles lose their status as wild animals and are consigned to an unnatural, and unnaturally short, life in a back yard. By all means, help that turtle cross the road in the direction she (or he) was heading, if you can do so safely. But then leave her in the wild where she belongs. The collection of turtles by passersby seriously contributes to the ongoing population declines in many species. Turtles and tortoises are particularly vulnerable to collecting, since they ...

Brush Piles 101
2007-05-16 02:53:00
That autumnal chill in the air means one thing for many homeowners: the season of leaf raking is at hand. Thoughts naturally turn to cleaning up the yard in that annual ritual of outdoor orderliness. But before you pile a season's worth of leaves, tree limbs, and garden debris by the curb, consider the year-round needs of your wild neighbors. You can make a difference in restoring and preserving wildlife habitat in your communities, and creating a brush-pile shelter for wild animals is a simple way to start. Throughout the year, wild animals need dense cover in which to hide from predators, rest, nest, and seek shelter from severe weather. When deciduous trees and shrubs lose their foliage, permanent sources of cover become even more important. Creating a brush pile is an inexpensive and easy way to provide critical shelter and cover for ground-nesting birds, reptiles and amphibians, chipmunks, rabbits, and other small ...

Why Animals Do Not Make Good Gifts
2007-04-22 11:10:00
Animals are not toys. They are sentient beings who, like us, require love and proper care to flourish. Although people who give animals as gifts invariably have good intentions, it is unfair to give an animal to anyone unless you are absolutely certain that the person wants that particular animal as a companion and is willing and able to give a lifetime of proper care. Children Can Be CruelIntentionally or not, sometimes children are cruel to animals. Puppies, kittens, bunnies, chicks, baby ducks, and other young animals are especially vulnerable. Small children may unintentionally torment and/or harm animals, even breaking their fragile bones or causing other fatal injuries. Adoration may turn to indifference or even hostility when a child loses interest in an animal, who may then go without necessary care. The child’s parents or the adult who gave the child the animal may become impatient and try to “solve” the problem by turning the animal over to a shelter or ...

Veterinary Malpractice and Grooming Accidents
2007-04-22 10:57:00
The difficulty of coping with an animal companion’s injury or death is compounded when you suspect that a veterinarian’s negligence or abuse may be to blame. You can help protect your animal before tragedy strikes by looking for a skilled and caring veterinarian (ask for references from trusted friends and humane organizations, and call the local Better Business Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, and State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners to check for complaints); seeking a second or third opinion about your animal’s diagnosis before proceeding with surgery or treatment; and carefully monitoring your animal’s stay and treatment at veterinary clinics. Never hesitate to ask questions about your animal companion’s treatment, and never leave your animal overnight at a veterinary hospital unless you are convinced that it is necessary to do so. If your animal companion becomes sick or injured at a veterinary clinic, immediately take him or her to another veter...

Super Supplements for your Cat
2007-04-22 10:36:00
Although manufacturers of commercial cat food are constantly improving and fortifying chow, cats don’t always get the right amount of necessary vitamins and minerals. You can put the shine back in your cat’s coat, fend off itchy skin, or assist muscle and joint function with supplements. Before you start using supplements, discuss your cat’s specific needs with a holistic veterinarian. You can locate a holistic vet in your area by contacting the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association at 410/569-0795 or through its Web site at www.altvetmed.com. Here are some popular supplements that can keep your cat in optimal health Acidophilus. This "good" bacteria detoxifies and fortifies the digestive tract and aids in the absorption of nutrients. Count on this supplement to treat diarrhea, gas, bad breath, and foul-smelling feces. Amino acids. It may surprise you, but the biggest deficiencies in cat diets are amino acids. If you remember your high school...

Deskunking Your Dog
2007-04-22 10:29:00
If your dog is sprayed by a skunk, you are likely to look frantically in your kitchen cupboards for something that you can wash her with that will neutralize and remove the overpowering smell. Usually this happens in the middle of the night, of course, since skunks are nocturnal creatures. Some simple chemistry will help you choose the right ingredients! The old folk remedy for skunk smell removal is tomato juice. The reason this was passed down through the generations is that it worked! Skunk spray is alkaline, and acidic tomato juice will neutralize the alkaline odor. One of my dogs was once sprayed by a skunk in August when the garden was full of ripe tomatoes, and not having any tomato juice in the house, and it (of course) being midnight, I ran out and picked half a dozen tomatoes off the vine, cut them in half and rubbed them over the dog, who I had put in the bathtub. It worked! The only problem is that when she shook, tomato seeds and pulp flew all over the bathroom and it lo...

Officials: Pet Food Contamination May Have Been Intentional
2007-04-21 10:50:00
Friday , April 20, 2007Imported ingredients used in recalled pet food may have been intentionally spiked with an industrial chemical to boost their apparent protein content, U.S. federal officials said. That is one theory being pursued by the Food and Drug Administration as it investigates how the chemical, melamine, contaminated at least two ingredients used to make more than 100 brands of dog and cat foods. Click here for a list of some contaminated pet food brands. In California, state agriculture officials placed a hog farm under quarantine after melamine was found in pig urine there. Additional testing was under way to determine whether the chemical was present in the meat produced by American Hog Farm in Ceres since April 3, the state Department of Food and Agriculture said. So far, melamine has been found in both wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate imported from China. Media reports from South Africa suggest a third pet food ingredient, corn gluten, used in tha...

Living With Allergies to Animals
2007-04-20 10:48:00
People who suffer from allergies to cats, dogs, or other animals may be misguidedly advised to find new homes for their companion animals, but doctors are increasingly recognizing the importance of the human-animal bond. Besides, says one California allergist, “If the advice to give up their pets is handed down … most people change allergists rather than change pets.”(1) There are many ways to increase the chances that your allergies and your animal companion can peacefully coexist. What Causes Allergic Reactions?Allergy-causing substances (allergens) can be found in animals’ hair, dander, urine, feces, and saliva. They can be carried on clothes and can stay in carpets and furniture for months, even after an animal no longer lives there.(2) The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology reported that dog and cat allergens are detectable in 100 percent of U.S. homes.(3) Despite some claims, there are no allergen-free cats or dogs. Dr. Kerry Hancock, the princ...

Puppy Mills: Dogs Abused for the Pet Trade
2007-04-20 10:44:00
It can be hard to resist the cute puppies and kittens for sale in pet store windows. But a closer look into how these stores obtain animals reveals a system in which the high price that consumers pay for “that doggie in the window” pales in comparison to the cost paid by animals who are sold in pet stores or forced to produce them. That adorable little scamp in the store probably came from a “puppy mill,” a breeding kennel that raises dogs in cramped, crude, filthy conditions. The majority of these facilities are in the Midwest, but kennels can be found throughout the country, and some dealers even import puppies from other countries.(1) Constant confinement and a lack of adequate veterinary care and socialization often result in animals who are unhealthy and difficult to socialize. As a result, many are abandoned within weeks or months of their adoption by frustrated buyers—further exacerbating the tragic companion animal overpopulation crisis. Ca...

Doing What's Best for Our Companion Animals
2007-04-20 10:41:00
In a perfect world, animals would be free to live their lives to the fullest, raising their young and following their natural instincts in their native environments. Domesticated dogs and cats, however, cannot live “free” in our concrete jungles, so we are responsible for their care. People with the time, money, love, and patience to make a lifetime commitment to an animal can make an enormous difference by adopting an animal from a shelter or rescuing an animal from a perilous life on the streets. It is important, also, to keep our companion animals from reproducing, which perpetuates a class of animals who are forced to rely on humans to survive. Sadly, not everyone loves animals. Any animal control officer has stories about animals who are found bruised, bloodied, and emaciated; litters of puppies and kittens who are rescued from taped-up boxes along highways or from sealed plastic garbage bags that have been thrown into lakes and rivers; or animals who are aband...
