A short while ago we added a new area to the Aquarists Online website where anyone can submit interesting aquarium related articles, topics, news etc for others to enjoy. It was not until recently that we were informed of a slight issue with the new resource. 'People could not create an account to submit their content!' Sorry about that and thanks Marie for letting us know.

An Automated Aquarium Hood
2007-10-15 20:02:00
If you have a saltwater aquarium and lighting is provided by metal halide lighting then potentially you could have quite a large aquarium hood. As we all know there are times when we need to access the aquarium in order to feed the fish, introduce new corals or fish, move rocks around etc and if you have a large aquarium hood then they can become quite bulky and hard to lift.

5 Cardinal Sins Of A Marine Aquarist
2007-10-14 12:00:00
I thought I?d jot down what I consider to be the five major sins of a marine aquarist, be that reef or fish only. They are not in any particular order. The list is not just aimed at beginners to the hobby who are just starting a saltwater aquarium but at aquarists of any level.

Anenomes And Anenomefish
2007-10-10 13:15:00
For me I just love the sight of an anenomefish living in symbiosis with an anemone. An anemone which due to its very nature loves to eat fish and any other animal which fall prey to it. But not the anenomefish. It could be said I suppose that the anemone uses the anenomefish as a lure for other fish. Whatever it is it is a sight to behold.

Coral Propagation - Why Don?t You Give It A Try
2007-10-07 13:05:00
A lot of people especially those who are new to the aquarium hobby are a bit sceptical when it comes to coral propagation. And I have to be truthful here - it really is not that hard. The biggest aspect which you need to be sure of before committing to doing some coral propagation of you own is that the water parameters in your aquarium need to be excellent.

Cycling The Marine Aquarium
2007-10-06 13:00:00
After you have done all the research, planned your system and parted with some or even lots of your hard earned cash then you will finally be at a point where you will starting to prepare to add some animals to your new aquarium. The aquarium is in place and is full of water - all it needs now is some livestock to make the picture complete, however before you can add any animals to the aquarium it needs to be cycled.

Quick Tip - Label Your Power Outlets
2007-10-05 13:00:00
With a saltwater aquarium and all the equipment involved you can and probably will end up with a lot of plugs. If you plan it correctly and do some form of cable management then you should be able to have a tidy system rather than a spaghetti jungle.

Aquarium Computers - Do You Use One
2007-10-04 13:00:00
I have to admit that I personally do not use a computer on my aquarium. This is not to say that they are not very good because trust me - I really would love to have one. The truth is that at the moment I cannot both afford to have one or warrant the expenditure.

How Does A Refractometer Work And How Do You Use One
2007-10-01 13:00:00
In a saltwater aquarium stability is one of the aquarists prime concerns and numerous devices are uses to measure various aspects of the aquarium. One of the aspects which aquarists measure is salinity/specific gravity - ie the amount of salt in the water.

A Fish House ? Now I Would Love One Of Those
2007-10-01 00:33:00
Something that I have always wanted is my very own fish house. No not a house made out fish! A fish house is effectively another room where all the equipment, sump, refugium, skimmer etc can all be kept. It is a designated room which can be set up in any way which you please.

2007-09-28 21:49:00
When you start a saltwater aquarium one of the things which you must do is maintain stability. The hydrometer is an essential item when it comes to saltwater aquariums. A hydrometer allows you to measure and record the salinity of the saltwater. The saltwater which is both in your aquarium and which is prepared for water changes.

At various stages of the saltwater aquariums life there will be various algae blooms that will occur. When these occur the aquarist should not feel despondant.

Stocking The Saltwater Aquarium Part 2
2007-09-19 20:39:00
In Part 1 stocking a fish only aquarium was considered. This time the reef aquarium will be looked at. Whatever the type of salt water aquarium, fish only or reef, water quality is important. In the reef aquarium, water quality needs to be excellent. Again, it is assumed that the aquarium is fully set up with suitable equipment, and the biological filtration (probably a ?live? rock reef with maybe a sump containing further filtration) is settled and adequate.

Reef Janitors - Essential In A Saltwater Aquarium
2007-09-18 21:38:00
Stability in the saltwater aquarium is key to success (as well as research and patience). Stability is created by the aquarist and the filtration within the aquarium. The aquarist provides assistance in this area by ensuring that the correct care and maintenance is provided to the aquarium. The filtration within the aquarium allows for pollutants within the water to be processed, therefore producing a pollutant free environment.

Beginners Tip - Research And Plan Before Purchasing A Single Item
2007-09-16 21:32:00
When you are considering starting a saltwater aquarium it is always tempting to rush to the shop with a pocketful of cash and purchase everything you need. I know the feeling - I felt like doing exactly that when I started. I could not wait to get my own saltwater aquarium, but I knew that I had to learn more about the subject before parting with my money.

Danger And The Saltwater Aquarium
2007-09-12 13:42:00
What wonders our reef or fish only aquariums are. There can be no argument that they are a thing of beauty, with inhabitants created by nature. To sit and watch a marine aquarium is to enjoy calm. Diving or snorkelling on the wild reef is very similar on a large scale. Nature is showing off, anything I can do you can?t do better. Colourful fish in swarms against a blue background and under a rippling silver sky. Corals in many colours, some swaying to the music of the sea. What an idyllic scene.

Reef Fish Behaviour In The Aquarium - A Wonder To Watch
2007-09-09 21:59:00
A major part of keeping a saltwater aquarium is actually making the time to just sit there and watch it, well it is for me anyway. I use this time for various reasons:

Aquarium LED Lighting - A Major Advance Or Is Metal Halide Still The Light
2007-09-08 13:20:00
I?ve already written about LED?s (Light Emitting Diodes) of low output (see 'LED Lighting On The Marine Reef Aquarium '). Those low output LED?s create excellent moonlight effects. This time the subject is still LED?s but ones of high output.

How To Clean A Fish Tank
2007-09-07 21:43:00
When the aquarium is clean it can look amazing to the eye - both for yourself and for anyone who see's it. The trouble is they don't keep themselves clean do they. Fish , like humans produce waste. This waste along with the aspects which we introduce into the aquarium (uneaten food etc) all helps to increase the pollution in the water.

Good Starter Corals For The Beginner
2007-09-05 22:33:00
When starting a new reef tank, especially if you are a beginner to the hobby as I am sure you may by now appreciate there is at times quite a lot to learn. Starting a reef aquarium is only as hard as you allow it to be. Why learn all about advanced water chemistry for example at the very beginning - learn the basics first, get your aquarium running and then carry on reading, studying and learning. Why make starting an aquarium harder by including corals in your aquarium where you have to learn a lot about how to care for and maintain them. There are some corals which are exceptionally hard to care for so why not keep some of the easier to keep corals whilst you are learning the basics and as you learn more and your aquarium ages then you can add more.

My Dream Saltwater Aquarium
2007-09-04 12:20:00
We love our marine aquariums, don?t we. The money we spend on them, the time we spend on them. Not to mention the time we spend just gazing at them. There?s always the feeling that it could be a little better, isn?t there. Not always the existing aquarium, either. Now experience has been gathered and methods are fully understood, the possibilities that could be achieved are realized.

10 Tips When Considering Setting Up A Saltwater Aquarium
2007-09-03 16:28:00
There is a bucket load of information available to people when they are considering starting their very own saltwater aquarium. In the majority of instances there is a little to much information given and people, quite rightly become confused. Lets be fair there is a lot of information to take on board! What makes it worse in this hobby is that there is not just one way to do things, there are various ways, each of them work and it is the responsibility of the aquarists to implement the one which is best both for themselves and their new aquarium inhabitants.

LED Lighting On The Marine Reef Aquarium
2007-09-03 14:25:00
There is a new LED lighting system which is said to equal the power of some metal halides. If that is the case then that lighting is going to be very interesting to marine reef aquarists. Presumably the spectrum will be suitable. Now I?ve led everyone up the garden path - I?m not writing about high power LED lighting, but just the opposite, very low power lighting. The lighting is designed to come on just before the main lights turn out.

The Coral Propagation Aquarium
2007-08-29 22:37:00
A lot has been said about wild reef conservation because of the known concerns on the future of these areas. Marine aquarists will also be concerned as none would wish to see wild reefs reduce. Unfortunately, they appear to be doing just that. I?m not going to natter on about this, but am going to write about propagating corals - not how to cut corals on this occasion, but how to prepare a place to put the cuttings. It is not expensive, and no great skills are required.
