The Aquarium Sump - Hidden From View Yet Exceptionally Useful
2007-08-25 00:51:00 'Sump' isn?t a very exotic sounding word. In reality a sump isn?t. It may be hidden away and seldom seen, but a sump is a very useful addition to the marine aquarium. So what is an aquarium sump? It is another aquarium that is in addition to and in support of the display aquarium. It adds gallonage to the system which is a good thing from a water quality point of view and they also allow items of hardware to be hidden from view. A sump can house heaters, a protein skimmer etc, so that the display aquarium remains free of technical hardware and nothing is seen apart from the fish and/or the reef. The sump can also contain filtration, which again aids seawater quality. More About: Aquarium , View , Hidden , Ally
Product Review - Reef Keeping Basics
2007-08-23 21:32:00 A short while ago I had the privilege of being able to review a book titled 'Reef Keeping Basics ' by Eric V. Van Der Hope. Wow - what a refreshing change that was! I was a little scepticle when I was first given the opportunity as over the years I have read many papers, guides, books etc and over this time there is quite a bit of duplicate content and theories However I was pleasantly surprised. Starting A Marine Aquarium - The Very First Considerations
2007-08-18 11:24:00 Seeing pictures of a healthy marine fish only or reef aquarium in books or on the internet, or even better, in reality at a public aquarium will cause just about anyone to appreciate the beauty and general fascination of them. Some people will wonder if they could have one, and the thought will shortly disappear. Others, however, will not forget so easily and will want to delve further into the possibility of their own aquarium. If the potential aquarist knows a friend who already has a healthy marine aquarium, then there is a source of advice available already. The friend will already have been through all the research and considerations. Often, however, the potential aquarist will want to find out for him/herself. That is very good, as the aquarium system will be understood thoroughly. Then there may not be a known marine aquarist available, so what is the first move? Dashing to the local shop and buying an aquarium and a few bits of equipment that the shop says is needed is tota... More About: Aquarium , Marine , Cons , Mari , Consider
There?s No Water Movement In My Reef
2007-08-17 21:12:00 I came home this evening from a hard day at work, ready for the weekend, spend some quality time with the family and do the weekly maintenance on the aquarium. Everything was all ok until I parked the car on the drive, got out and came into the house...... As soon as I came into the house the first thing I could hear was a beeping sound. I knew right from the very start what it was. It was the control unit from my Tunze wavebox. Sometimes it gets a slight block, the pump turns itself off to prevent damage and the alarm sounds. No problem I thought I'll just give it a quick once over and it will be fine. More About: Water , Reef
This Means War Part 2
2007-08-11 12:15:00 Running a marine aquarium means being on the lookout for trouble. That?s not to say that a marine aquarium is trouble, it simply means that, as with most things, trouble can arise despite the best efforts and diligence of the aquarist. I?d already found an intruder in my aquarium. It was identified, considered and eventually action taken to control it. This invader was eventually overcome, controlled and nearly eliminated so that it was no longer a problem. Its name was bubble algae, or sailor?s eyeballs (Ventricaria ventricosa). Peace reigned once again. The reef was splendid, routine maintenance was done, and much quiet observation and appreciation took place. More About: Part

This Means War!
2007-08-08 22:01:00 The marine aquarium is kept for fish, or corals, or fish and corals. The setting up costs are substantial. At the end of all the research, designing and purchasing, and once the system has matured and settled down, the aquarium is a thing of absolute beauty. Aquarists watch their fish swim around as though on a coral reef (well they are as far as they?re concerned) and feel peace watching the corals grow.

Nano Systems - They?ve Been Categorized - But They Still Need Looking After
2007-08-07 21:54:00 We all know what is meant by a nano system, don?t we? It?s a very small marine system of, say, 10 gallons or less that is dedicated to a fish or two, and a piece or two of live rock.. That?s right, isn?t it? Well, no, it isn?t. It may be that I?m uneducated (and I?m not saying that possibility is unlikely!). A nano system is now placed into any of three categories. First of all, the nano is a system under 50 gallons. I?m not sure if this refers to the gross or net capacity of the aquarium. More About: Systems , Nano , Look , Been , Stem

Why Is There Scum On The Water Surface
2007-08-06 23:10:00 A couple of days ago we received an email from a young man who has just started out in this hobby and has setup a small salt water aquarium. He was very apologetic for contacting us but had noticed that there was a large build up of what appeared to be scum on the water surface and was hoping that we would be able to help him find out what it was, is it detrimental and how does he remove it. Salinity In The Marine Aquarium
2007-08-04 21:09:00 We all know that the fish and corals we keep are salt water creatures. That?s why we buy those expensive packets or buckets of dry salt mix. Fish only or reef aquaria are normally kept at a specific gravity (SG) of 1022 to 1026. It has been said that it is advantageous to keep a fish only system at 1022, as it is claimed that certain pathogens do not do well at a lower SG. Fish can be treated for some infections by lowering the SG even more. Reef aquaria are normally kept at 1024 to 1026, this seems to be the usual. More About: Aquarium , Marine , Aqua , Mari
