Salinity In The Marine Aquarium
2007-08-04 21:09:00
We all know that the fish and corals we keep are salt water creatures. That?s why we buy those expensive packets or buckets of dry salt mix. Fish only or reef aquaria are normally kept at a specific gravity (SG) of 1022 to 1026. It has been said that it is advantageous to keep a fish only system at 1022, as it is claimed that certain pathogens do not do well at a lower SG. Fish can be treated for some infections by lowering the SG even more. Reef aquaria are normally kept at 1024 to 1026, this seems to be the usual.

Aquarium Additives and Hard Corals
2007-08-03 07:22:00
The reef aquarium with hard corals (SPS) is the desire of many an aquarist. The sight of pictures on the internet and in books only serves to increase that desire. With modern aquaria and equipment, plus the knowledge gained over recent years, this desire can be met, and more easily than some suspect. It is taken as read that the need for high water quality is understood. High water quality means a proper and stable pH, between 8.0 and 8.4, nitrate less than 10 ppm (parts per million), phosphate preferably undetectable, but no more than 0.03 ppm, and ammonia and nitrite undetectable. Equipment should include a properly sized and efficient protein skimmer. Water movement, which I consider a part of water quality, should be vigorous and chaotic. There is also a need for strong lighting, the best of which is metal halide, supplemented by actinic T5 fluorescents. A greater number of T5 fluorescents can be used without a metal halide, as many as can be fitted into the aquarium including...

Aquarium Additives and Soft Corals
2007-08-02 00:52:00
Keeping a seawater aquarium nowadays is a generally straightforward affair. Provided the design and setting up is satisfactory and the aquarist does the necessary periodic maintenance properly, the aquarium will give pleasure for a long period. Commercial seawater mixes are good overall. The mix will provide adequate levels of elements in the seawater, but checks should still be made, particularly when the aquarium is matured and settling and onwards, to ensure that important parameters are as they should be.

What Happens If You Lose Power
2007-07-31 21:41:00
This happened to me today - just as I was sitting down at the dinner table the power suddenly went off. Up I jumped quick as a flash to make sure that the aquarium was ok - my wife was more concerned over the freezer and that all the food might defrost - she obviously needs to look at her priorities! My son found it all highly amuzing watching his mummy and daddy running around the house leaving their dinners to go cold - and we didn't even ask if we could leave the table.

Water, water everywhere - not a drop to drink!
2007-07-28 23:32:00
When it comes to keeping a salt water aquarium there is one thing that we are going to need and the clue is in the name - that's right water! But is water just water - can you just use water straight from the tap or perhaps from the ocean itself. Well yes water is water but when we keep a salt water aquarium we are interested in any additional substances which are present. Leaving natural sea water out of the topic for the time being as I think I will cover that in a future post let's have a look at tap water.

Coral Propagation
2007-07-20 23:54:00
Any aquarist worth there ?salt? has a desire to see the reefs in nature continue to thrive. Fortunately a lot of the illegal harvesting has ceased and the natural reefs are starting to become more understood and admired. Unfortunately however, mankind is making it hard for these reefs to survive and many are in decline. This makes me very sad and I am sure a lot of others as well. As saltwater aquarists we all have a passion and love for these beautiful animals ? even if we stop keeping an aquarium for a while that passion does not dwindle.

Using Activated Carbon
2007-07-20 13:18:00
Using activated carbon is a means of removing certain organic substances from the seawater. In addition, it prevents the seawater from taking on a yellowish tinge, the substance that causes this is termed gilvin. Activa te d carbon, which is granular, is often placed in a canister filter which is also used for mechanical filtration purposes, as a good flow of water through the substance is achieved. Other filters can be used of course. Some aquarists simply hang a bag of activated carbon in a part of the aquarium or sump, but this practice has to be questionable because of the flow of, or rather lack of flow of, seawater through the substance.

Aquarium Lighting - What Are Your Options?
2007-07-19 20:41:00
Water quality (in which I include water movement) is top of the list in importance when it comes to keeping a saltwater aquarium. Closely following water quality is lighting, as much life on the reef depends on it. The lighting used for a reef aquarium is more intense than on any other type. The reason for this is that we are trying to simulate the sun as far as humanly possible. The lighting used on the reef aquarium is normally more towards the blue end of the colour spectrum as we are trying to produce the lighting colours present at between 10m and 30m in water depth.

Natural Aquarium Filtration
2007-06-22 22:35:00
In this post I will cover what I believe to be the most powerful form of filtration currently available to the saltwater aquarist. I agree that this aspect of filtration may not be for everyone, however by understanding what natural filtration is and how it works then you can implement the type of filtration which is best for you. There are various types of natural based filtration available - all of which never ceases to amaze me. The diversity of organisms which is in the aquarium is huge, to me these are just as interesting as the fish and corals which we keep. There have been numerous times when I have been sat in front of the aquarium when all the lights are out with a torch (with a red bulb in it) staring into the aquarium watching all the life go about its business.

The aquarium filter - how does it work then
2007-06-15 11:15:00
Since yesterdays post we have had a few people contact us saying that it is all well and good talking about aquarium filtration and different methods etc when there are a lot of visitors to this site who are thinking about starting a salt water aquarium and do not fully understand how an aquarium filter actually works. So here we go, this is the first of a couple of posts to touch upon the basics of aquarium filtration (what it is, how it works, methods etc)
