How is the Lucy Girl
2008-02-13 04:24:00
So we went into the vet today to pick up Lucy . She had an ultrasound to see if they could find a cancer tumor, from where the cancer in her lungs may have originated. Still there is a 15% chance it’s not cancer, it could be something else. They didn’t find a tumor. ...

Tatum is Officially Clicker Savvy
2008-02-11 02:03:00
First off, dogs like to lay their heads on keyboards, and it makes it hard to type! So anyway I want to teach Tatum flyball the right way. And she’s not very high drive when it’s just me and her… so we are working on the small bits. I want her to have a ...

He?s Been Through Too Much
2008-02-10 22:27:00
Our Muffit boy has been through too many changes. My husband has told me we are keeping him. Well, at least my husband can’t get mad at me for keeping a dog without me asking him! I was looking through my old backed up pictures from my old server, and I found ...

ASCA Agility
2008-02-10 19:54:00
Well we did some ASCA agility yesterday. I just entered the one day. I’m glad I did. Chase was so tired last night when we got home that he was showing his teeth to everyone, even Lucy and Levi and he doesn’t do that often at all. Both Levi and Chase did great. Levi ...

Pink and Red Valentines Roses
2008-02-10 19:48:00
It’s February. Lucy will turn 9 on February 15th, the day after Valentine’s day. She is doing well. She is acting the same, so that is good. And I’m learning to deal with my emotions. I’m looking forward to Valentine’s day. My husband and I sometimes make dinner together and ...

Dealing with the Emotions of Pending Death
2008-02-09 05:28:00
I don’t believe in the rainbow bridge. I hope that Kip is out there, somewhere, doing something a heck of a lot more interesting than waiting for me by some bridge. Maybe he’s dancing on the stars, or he’s existing in some alternate reality where he gets to be some other type of entity, ...

Death Lasts so much Longer than Life
2008-02-08 23:43:00

Muffit the Muppet
2008-02-07 00:26:00
This is Muffit. Okay, his name started out as Wheatie, and then he came to live with us for a while as a foster boy. And for some reason, I just wanted to call him Muffit! Remember Muffit, the mechanical dog from the original Battlestar Galactica? Well, yup, that’s what I like to call him. But then he went to his new home and they named him Shiloh. We fostered him for CAWS, and they are a great rescue organization. They did follow up calls, made sure all was well. I even saw Shiloh at an agility demo about a year and a half ago.. and he was running around and looked happy and I was glad to see him. It was pure luck. Well, while I was in Los Angeles at the Clicker Expo, my husband got a call from CAWS. Poor Muffit had been dumped at the Humane Society of Utah. Not only that, the HSU didn’t scan him for a chip for two weeks! So now he is sitting next to me on the couch and he has a nasty cold. His breathing is labored. He’s super skinny, and when he came bac...
Shaping with the Clicker
2008-02-05 20:49:00
One of the core training techniques with clicker training is called shaping, or free shaping. There is also micro-shaping which is amazing to watch, and the clicker expo had a presenter… Alexandra Kurland who clicks with horses. And in a nutshell, she shapes the horses to carry their bodies, with a rider, so that ...

Wow the Clicker
2008-02-05 20:24:00
The clicker expo, as I have said before, blew me away. I do look at my dog training in a whole new light, now. I don’t know if I can convey to you what I feel, as although I like to think I am fairly good at writing, sometimes getting my information across ...

Going Exotic
2008-02-05 20:16:00
I just got back from Los Angeles, California. And while it’s not really all that exotic, it’s a heck of a lot warmer than Utah this time of year! Though flights to Tenerife would be much more fun to look into, as I love to get out of the country. It’s hard, anymore, ...

Quiet Before Tatum
2008-01-30 16:54:00
We used to have such a quiet house. I could work from home, and the dogs would be mellow and snooze through the day. Waking up in the evening to get dinner, some chew bones, and play. Or training, of course, always training. But now, with Tatum the Wild Child, there isn’t as much quiet. ...

MV?s Pitbulls
2008-01-26 00:17:00
So what is happening to Michael Vick’s pit bulls? I haven’t posted about Michael Vick here on Tip Tail… the whole story is sad and depressing. How anyone can fight dogs I just don’t understand. And to put them through such horrible ‘training,’ which is actually abuse, is beyond me. But then ...

MV’s Pitbulls

So what is happening to Michael Vick’s pit bulls? I haven’t posted about Michael Vick here on Tip Tail… the whole story is sad and depressing. How anyone can fight dogs I just don’t understand. And to put them through such horrible ‘training,’ which is actually abuse, is beyond me. But then again I don’t even eat animals because I want no harm to come to them. But now the good news about the dogs. PR Web has an Article (click here to read PRweb.com) which links to www.dogtime.com that has some great videos on their front page about how 10 of the dogs are being rehabilitated and put into foster homes to learn how to live in a home and with people. I love pit bulls. I fostered one for a short time, and she convinced me, beyond a doubt, that they are wonderful, amazing dogs. Strong willed, for sure, and also loving and sweet. But anyway, if you want some good news about these dogs, click the links above to read the good things about res...

Flyball Seminar

So.. there is a flyball seminar in Las Vegas in March. March 1, 2, 2008. I really want to go. I hear they are only about half full, so I sent my entrance fee for a working slot in today. Hopefully I’ll get one. I hope some of the other members of my club, the Thunder Paws, come too. Instead of going to mover NYC, I’ll be going to Las Vegas.. yet again. Man, that city just calls to me all the dang time. I am going there so very often! But it’ll be fun. I really want to see how I can get a better box turn on Chase. More reliable in competition. And how to maybe speed him up a little bit. His fastest time was 4.7 seconds. And I would love to see him at 4.5 or maybe even below. I believe he is capable of it! He is a very fast boy. It’s the box turn that slows him down, I think. The seminar is being given by Touch n Go. They keep winning the U-FLI nationals, and they have, I believe, the fastest U-FLI team. And man, they are fast. I saw them in the tou...

Learning to Play
2008-01-24 02:39:00
It’s strange, teaching a dog how to play with humans. It’s so natural for them when they are puppies. But if it’s not nurtured and encouraged, appropriately, it can fade. Or if it has been a bad experience for them, they will avoid it. Chase just naturally plays with people. And he loves tug. ...

Learning to Play

It’s strange, teaching a dog how to play with humans. It’s so natural for them when they are puppies. But if it’s not nurtured and encouraged, appropriately, it can fade. Or if it has been a bad experience for them, they will avoid it. Chase just naturally plays with people. And he loves tug. I didn’t have to teach him how to play. But Tatum… well, she knows how to play with other dogs, but she isn’t, still, quite sure how to play with me. Today I was putting some dog toys a friend of mine made off the freezer, and onto a chair for a bit. Well Tatum thought it was a great pile and picked out her favorite and ran outside with it. First thing I think is great training and playing opportunity. So I go outside with her, but then all the other five dogs follow us out. So I get the toy, and bring Tatum downstairs and leave the rest upstairs. She was still being playful so that was great. I squiggled the toy around and she chased it. I even threw it...

Dog Address Labels
2008-01-22 17:39:00
I want address labels. It’s a weakness of mine… and I don’t know why because people just throw them away anyway. but I love having a little logo and have it look nice and fancy up on the left corner of the envelope. I’ve bought address labels from Vista Print before, and probably will do so again. I’m almost out of the ones I have. And I love being able to customize them with the Utah Collie Rescue logo, or a picture of my dogs, or anything I feel like! Mailing Labels just look so nice and they are fun and so why not? I have also purchased business cards from Vista Print, for Utah Dogs, and would love to get some for Utah Collie Rescue, too. I could have matching business cards and return address labels. I like to match. And I like to have things look nice and professional. And Vista Print does this, and they have good prices, too. Many of their business cards are free, you must have to pay for the shipping. I don’t remember how the addres...
