Meet Majic!
2008-03-08 14:10:00
Majic has not always had the best life - she was destined to a life of misery living outdoors in a dog pen with little human contact. Now that she's been rescued, she has learned that people are cool, and other dogs are not intruders. She would prefer to be the only female dog in a and a low key household, with kids over 7 years of age.We met Majic through the Dog Pack Rescue, Inc. They are a 501c3 non-profit, dog sanctuary and animal welfare organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and re-homing of adoptable companion dogs in order to prevent needless euthanasia of these healthy animals. They rescue dogs from high kill animal control facilities in the Northwest Georgia area. For more information about Majic, click here! With all that Jack Russell energy, she most certainly won't need any weight loss pills, BOL!

Why shelters and rescue organizations charge adoption fees?
2008-03-08 14:00:00
We were over at Savings Lives One at a Time the other day and found a great article, "Why Shelters and Rescue Organizations Charge Adoption Fees ."Here's a bit of the article...I'm honored to report that Jane at Pet Rescuer Central asked me to do a guest post on her site about why shelters and rescues charge adoption fees. She has kindly permitted me to repost the article here.I often run into people that think they should be able to “adopt” or “rescue” a pet free of charge. After all, they’re saving the animal’s life, right? Why should they have to pay anything when they’re doing that organization a favor by taking the pet off their hands? Plus, giving away those pets, or reducing the fee will encourage more people to adopt, right? These folks are missing the big picture.Shelters and rescue organizations charge adoption fees for three basic reasons: 1) to attempt to recoup a small portion of the cost of rescuing pets, 2) to discourage impulse adoptions, and 3) to keep...
Estate planning for pets!
2008-03-08 13:49:00
Theresa Harrington, staff writer for the ContraCostaTimes.com in Walnut Creek, Calfornia, had a great article on estate plans for your pets. Be sure and check this out:Group encouraging estate plans for petsDogs and cats can face euthanasia if owners die, and this foundation says foresight can offset thisBy Theresa HarringtonStaff WriterWALNUT CREEK -- Sally Burgess loves her dog so much that she has set aside $10,000 a year in an estate plan to pay for her pet's care after she dies."I don't have any family," said the 67-year-old Rossmoor resident who has established a trust. "My friend Debbie Olson is in charge of my dog Belle. Five thousand dollars is for food and upkeep and an additional $5,000 is for board and veterinary bills in case Debbie wants to go away for three weeks on a vacation."Unlike Burgess, many pet owners haven't thought ahead about what would happen to their pets if they died or became incapacitated. The White Kitty Foundation, established to help find homes f...

I'm a black dog and proud of it!
2008-03-07 15:59:00
Just the other day, MSNBC online published a story about 'black dog syndrome.' What is 'black dog syndrome?' It's discrimination of black dogs, either because of superstition, or misconceptions of temperament. Read more about it here! All across the country black dogs are many times less likely to be adopted in shelters and rescues because of the color of their coat.An interesting experience of my own...when my Mum went to the shelter to look at me and my brother, the shelter volunteer gave Mum my brother first to look at. Why? The volunteer said she wanted Mum to see my brother first because he was all black and less likely to get adopted than me!Mum didn't care what color her next 'best friend' was going to be, she just knew that she wanted a nice pup. My brother wasn't a very nice, well behaved pup - all squirmy and barky - so Mum asked to see me. I was quiet and calm, when she held me and she knew it was forever. Only took three days before my true colors of wildness cam...

Online shopping!
2008-03-07 15:58:00
Mum and I do most of our shopping online. Why? because it's convenient! Remember, I'm a pup and they don't let me into a lot of stores, and Mum likes to take me nearly everywhere with her.Remember the day after Thanksgiving? That's the day also known as Black Friday and many people, with their newspaper advertisements in hand, ventured out really, really early in the morning to get those great pre-holiday deals. What did we do? We stayed at home and took advantage of all the great online deals we found, got nearly all our shopping done in one day, watched the dog show, and missed out on all the crowds and pushing and shoving, BOL!Worked out great for us and that's just exactly what we plan to do this year - take advantage of those great 2008 thanksgiving specials. Specials with stores like Amazon, Overstock.com, Buy.com, Target, Radio Shack, J&R, Linens and Things and much more.I know it's a little early to think about the holidays, but Mum and I are already have something ...

Meet Ralph!
2008-03-07 15:48:00
They just don’t come much nicer than Ralph! This gentle hound mix was rescued from a local KY shelter where he was facing death row. He has been at the sanctuary for several years now, so has become a bit of a king in his yard. However, this amazingly gentle, sensitive guy rules merely by barking orders, and gets along great with everyone. His favorite activities are dinnertime, snoozing in the shade, and showing off for visitors by posing on top of his doghouse! Born in 1997, Ralph has spent most of his life at the sanctuary—but we still have hope that the right family is out there for him. Could it be yours? We found Ralph currently being cared for by Home At Last Animal Sanctuary in Salvisa, Kentucky. They are accredited by the American Sanctuary Association, and provide lifetime care for many animals including dogs, cats, pigs, cows, goats, rabbits and a horse, and includes a separate wildlife refuge. They are a for-life sanctuary, emphasizing the concept of compassion and off...

Keeping happy!
2008-03-07 15:18:00
Around here we are an optimistic bunch, love life and all that comes with it. But I have to say it wasn't always that way. Back in the late 90's Mum got really sick and it took nearly two years before she got better. Throughout the time she was sick she got very sad. When she got well, she promised herself that she would never get that sad again!Oh, every now and then life can get to you and we get frustrated like everyone else. But we get over it quickly and move on - life is too short to stay in the dumps. There is a new wave of being that making it's way through the blogosphere that we've come across a lot lately. It's called the Sedona Method. The Sedona Method was founded nearly fifty years ago by a man named Lester Levenson, who was battling depression and ill health. He developed The Sedona Method, followed it and lived a happy 42 more years. Hale Dwoskin, who was one of Lester’s students now carries on Lester’s work all over the world.Eckhart Tolle’s newest book a ...

Putting together a website can be an overwhelming task. But it doesn't have to be.We came across an interesting site today - the Web Hosting BlueBlook - that helped us learn a lot. WebHostingBluebook.com is a popular guide to the best web host sites. The top 10 they list are rated by webmasters. They also have an extensive list of hosting companies and a forum where individuals discuss their hosting experiences. Meet Sam!
2008-03-05 12:32:00
They say that a beagle is like a fine wine....it only gets better with age. And this is particularly true of Sam. You won't find a sweeter boy around. And make no mistake, this boy has lots of good years left. We know of beagles that have lived to 17 yrs! Given up by his family for a younger version, Sam deserves only the best of homes to enjoy his golden years. Could that be you? If so you will both be lucky! We found Sam currently being cared for by the Pet Adoption Fund in Southern California. Duffy is misunderstood. People call him goofy, but he's just an overgrown puppy. He'll grow up eventually and be a love machine. Right now he need lots of exercise - got anything to herd? You gotta meet Ruby!
2008-03-03 15:24:00
You gotta meet Ruby ! What a cutie...My Mum went to meet Ruby yesterday at the Southside Animal Shelter in Indianapolis! Mum thought she was a sweetie - submissive to two-leggers, fun, energetic; and she learns very quickly. Mum had her click training in minutes!Ruby isn't doing well in a shelter environment and really needs to find a furever home, or a foster family that can show her what life should really be like. Like any herding breed, (Ruby is a BC mix) she needs a job and to keep her mind active and stimulated. She's really bored at the shelter. Hey, I understand, I'm a herding breed myself. She would be best as the only dog in the family, since she gets along much better with two-leggers, rather than four. And since she tends to herd, she would be best in a household with older, dog experienced kids.Ruby is about two years old and Mum says, is a real lover girl. She's currently being cared for by the great folks at the Southside Animal Shelter (where I came from!). They ar...

Oysters?
2008-03-02 12:00:00
My Mum has always been a big fan of oysters, they taste good and sometimes they have nice surprises in their shells! Like pearls.Being a dog, I've read that oysters aren't bad for us to eat in moderation - an occasional indulgence in seafood is good for a pup. But not good as a steady diet. Everything in moderation, right? Mollusks provide a low calorie protein that are an excellent source of zinc, vitamin B-12, and omega-3's.I know it sounds a little far fetched, but I was asked, what if Gulf oysters had other surprises in them, as a dog what would I like that surprise to be? So I got to thinking...what if those oysters came with squeakies inside, like most all of my other toys. I could eat the oyster then have loads of fun trying to de-squeak the darn thing. But I would have to make sure and have Mum cook those oysters thoroughly. Why? There is always a risk for certain individuals in eating those little guys raw. Eating raw oysters can be dangerous for ‘at risk’ people beca...

If you are wondering if you are ready to adopt a pet? Are you financially able? Emotionally ready for the responsibility? Have time in your life to give to a pet? Do you have the proper space? What type of pet is best to fit your lifestyle? The North Shore Animal League has put together a great adoption manual to help you better understand the commitment involved in owning a pet. Check it out, it's well worth your time. And if you are a shelter or rescue, this would be a great document to share with your potential adopters.Us pups can be a lot of fun, but we can be a handful sometimes! Just ask my Mum. We can get into things like tissue boxes and trash, chew up furniture, leave our 'mark' on just about everything including fiberglass columns, we can even sometime bark up a storm, sometimes. We'll need training, attention, love, time, fresh air, running room and some of us even need a job.Be sure you are ready, K?

Meet Dizzy!
2008-02-28 11:49:00
A black lab/shepherd mix born in October 1999, Dizzy is a good natured, happy fellow. He has a neurological condition which causes him to have poor coordination and makes him appear "dizzy". In every way, though, he is a regular guy, walks well on a leash and loves to play tug-of-war. I bet he loves hanging out on the outdoor furniture. We found Dizzy currently being cared for by Lafayette Animal Aid, a cat and dog rescue and adoption organization, based in Carencro, just outside of Lafayette, Louisiana. They are an ‘all-breed’ rescue group and don’t discriminate against any animal due to size, age, breed, color or background. Their cats and dogs stay with them - and receive a safe and caring haven and all necessary veterinary care - until a permanent home is found for them. They were founded in 1974 and are a chartered 501(C)3 non-profit humane society. For more information about Dizzy, click here!

We need some heat!
2008-02-12 18:00:00
If you are like us here in Indiana, you're cold! It's been 10 degrees, snowy, very windy and just generally miserable for several days. At least today it's 20 degrees. We sure wish we had an indoor barn to do some agility. Gracie and I miss it terribly. But of course I have to get over my little pulled muscle before I can gear back up for agility. We usually train in a nice horse barn in the winter, but I'm sure even with these frigid temps, no one is even training in the barn as much as we got to last year.I'm telling ya, if I had a barn to do agility in during the winter, I'd fire up the gas heaters, like they do at the Circle G Ranch in Dayton where we compete a lot and get busy, getting some exercise!

She was looking around the Internet today and found an interesting site that offers what they say is the highest quality in women's fashions and denim. And the best part is that they are offering it at savings of up to savings of up to 85%, and everything is $17.95 or less. Everything? Well, we had to check that out!Mum found a couple of nice pair of designer jeans that she thought she'd add to her wish list. She just loves a good bargain! It may be Junior Clothing, but believe it or not, she can still fit into some of those junior sizes, because I work hard to keep her in shape.
