Traveling With Pets
2007-12-18 22:29:00 Barbara and I don’t travel much with our dogs. Most of our travel, because of my job, tends to be international or long-distance domestic, and taking one or more dogs would be difficult and expensive. In the past, though, when we had the time to actually drive somewhere within a few hundred miles to go ... More About: Pets , Stuff , Traveling , Sheltie
Hair, hair, pet hair everywhair
2007-12-18 22:13:00 Do you have a pet? Of course you do, or you wouldn’t be reading this blog. And, if you have a pet, you have pet hair. Frankly, I’ve completely forgotten what it’s like to eat a meal without Sheltie hair in it Sad, but true! As one of the principal foster homes for Sheltie Rescue ... More About: Hair
Dealing With The Loss Of A Pet
2007-12-18 21:54:00 Losing a pet is a terrible thing emotionally. Our dogs and cats are parts of our lives and our families. When they reach the ends of their lives, whether because of disease or simply old age, we suffer their absence. As most of you can appreciate, we in rescue go through this far, far too ... As cute as they are?
2007-12-15 20:33:00 This seems like a good time to address this issue we who deal so closely with dogs in the numbers we do. As cute as they are, it’s a rather serious matter to be bitten at all let alone badly enough to break skin. Heaven knows I’ve had my share of bites, most especially given the career ... If You Get Bitten Please Remove Your Ring!
2007-12-13 21:49:00 With many Shelties in the house we do have tiffs among the dogs every so often. Generally I’m on my feet when this happens and can do something to end it pretty quickly — like grab one or both dogs involved. This time I was on the bed — a waterbed at that — and ... Days in the snow
2007-12-13 20:55:00 After joyfully reading Julene’s blog “A Day Off” I started to think about when I would play in the snow with my sheltie Maggie. We got her when I was about 2 years old. My mom rescued her from an abusive family in Iowa and she remained with us until shortly after we moved to ... More About: Humor , Snow , Days
A day off?
2007-12-10 06:24:00 Today is my day off. “Oh, how nice! You get a day off” you say? Yes, it is! My day off was prepared for ahead of time. I carefully planned ahead due to the impending doom and gloom forecast by the weather man. The Pineapple express was well on it’s way to colliding with sub ... More About: Humor
Life?s little turns
2007-12-06 01:48:00 In an effort to participate in this “blog?”, I shall press forward and blurt out my musings as it were. I have apparently lost track of how the world has progressed without my help and that disconcerts me somewhat. I know these things happen, progress that is, but I’m a year closer to ... Sheltie Dreams
2007-12-05 20:24:00 Ahhh…it’s (much too) early on Thursday morning, December 5, in Canberra, the capital city of Australia. Yep, I’m on the road again. Flying to Australia might sound exciting, but it’s a loooong flight. On Monday evening, I flew to Los Angeles, where I had about an hour to walk over to another gate about 2 ... The Right Foster Home vs. My Sanity
2007-12-02 20:36:00 We are working so hard and somewhat successfully to acquire wonderful foster homes so we can spread the hard work of caring for rescued Sheltie s and Collies across many people and many homes. So now, thanks primarily to the hard work of SRU’s Foster Administrator, Shannon Tew, who is an ace organizer and asks excellent ... More About: Home , Stuff
Shelties and Sprinklers
2007-12-01 06:12:00 Cute video found on YouTube Clearly this isn’t the Shelties and sprinklers video I enjoyed. I’ll have to work on this more and figure out how to get that video up here. This agility one is good too. - Barbara This might be the sprinkler video… Hey! Success!
Window Blankets As Curtains and Solar to Run Them
2007-11-30 03:24:00 I know some of this is off topic but here it goes anyway…I’m almost obsessed with not paying more money to the local power company or fuel companies than necessary to be warm and comfortable (or cool and comfortable). This is a hot topic (pun intended) now that those cold winds are blowing around here and we have snow. I’m especially concerned with overpaying for basic needs because we spend so much money on veterinary care and I want to eliminate unnecessary expenses. I came across this product last year called a window blanket. They were terribly expensive so I moved on. But…I liked the concept and it’s really pretty simple - if only I knew how to sew. So last year I did things to create air layers between the windows and the room they were in by, for example, (you’re going to laugh) hanging sheers closest to the window and creating a second layer by hanging clear shower curtains. My idea was to create a heavy plastic but see-through ba... More About: Solar , Window
Management Challenges
2007-11-29 15:34:00 Few readers of this blog will be surprised to learn that, as the saying goes, it takes a village to run a rescue group. Oh, sure, ‘way back when we rescued a half-dozen or so Shelties each year, things were simple. We fostered all of the rescues in our own home, we found and interviewed potential adopters, and we followed up on things as well as we could. But Sheltie Rescue of Utah has grown a lot since those days. Now, we rescue dozens of Shelties every year and have to rely on others to carry some of the burden. As the breadth and extent of the work has grown, Barbara finds herself spending the majority of her time either feeding and pottying the dogs or answering phone calls from potential adopters, fosters, SRU members, etc., leaving her little time to handle the increasingly large administrative issues associated with being Chair of the Board of Directors for a non-profit. It’s not unusual for there to be anywhere from 15 to 20 Shelties in our rescue program at any... More About: Management , Halle
Kisses in the Night!
2007-11-29 05:51:00 We have a little black and white female named Simone that came from a puppy mill along with another Sheltie, named Ritzy. Both are very shy but Simone has some very funny little habits that only seem to get funnier as she opens up to life here. Ritzy in the meantime has found a forever home with a wonderful Dad. She doesn’t like the dominant dogs in the house although she’s happy to play a bit with a dog that’s not too intimidating. Other than that and knowing our routines really well, Simone spends an awful lot of time curled up in a corner hoping nobody will notice her. But the exceptions to this are growing… At meal times if I’m slow to get the dogs into their dining room (which used to be a human dining room) she will look for an opening between the dogs that are trying to bug me into feeding them and creep over to me and quietly put her forepaws on my knees and she looks up at me — into my eyes. Simone coming over to ‘tal... Wild Blue Yonder
2007-11-23 17:30:00 It’s one of those mornings that depress me the most. I’m leaving in a couple of hours for the airport. Today, I’m flying to Frankfurt, Germany, where I’ll hire a car and drive about 170 km south(ish) to a village named Jagsthausen where I’m attending a 5-day technical meeting. I’ll fly back home on Saturday, ... More About: Stuff , Blue , Wild , Wild Blue , Sheltie

Isaac: There’s a new star in the sky tonight
2007-11-22 04:33:00 I can’t believe it. Isaac ’s gone. This afternoon, we decided that we couldn’t let Isaac deteriorate any further, knowing that it was our responsibility to do what’s right for him, regardless of our pain. Isaac was the last of our “planned” dogs. We’ve still got two Shelties that we’ve adopted ourselves (Sly and Star ), but Isaac was planned. He was with us from just a few weeks old, and stayed around for 15 years, 9 months, and 18 days. When he came to us, he was the happiest puppy imaginable and brought us tremendous joy. His breeder had given him the name “Isaac” and I dislike changing a dog’s name. But Barbara and I had to figure out a registered name for this great kid. The Hebrew equivalent of Isaac is ??????? (Yitzchaq or Yitzach), which means “he laughs”. That was so appropriate for this beautiful blue boy, so we registered him as Scherzando Prophet of Joy. (Scherzando was his breeder’s kennel... The Black Spool - Beautiful Embroidery for All Reasons and All Breeds!
2007-11-20 23:11:00 Hi, I wanted to share with everyone the information on Jackson’s new Mom and Dad’s business — also daughter Tabitha’s business —The Black Spool. If you’ve had embroidery done and haven’t had it done here I recommend that you try them out in the future. The The Black Spool is family run and has always been a strong supporter of Sheltie Rescue helping us when we first started creating embroidered products for re-sale. Sheltie Rescue goes to Vanessa, Tabitha, and Bob for all the embroidery work done on our embroidered products. We get lots of compliments every year on the quality of the embroidery work they do. They digitize pictures and turn them into wonderful embroidery designs. They will work with you until the design looks the way you want it to look. They are great to work with. For information on The Black Spool or to contact them go to this link. http://blackspool.com/pages/1/index.htm More About: Beautiful , Reasons , Breeds , Embroidery
Jackson Finds a Home - Maybe?
2007-11-20 22:13:00 I have a very, very soft spot for the exuberant and loving nature of Corgis. The fluffy Corgi who ended up with Sheltie Rescue of Utah seems to have accidently found himself a home while we were out running errands together on Monday. With our Isaac boy needing special care and attention I decided to take the most outlandish member of the household, Jackson , a Corgi whom I love dearly, with me while I was out for several hours on errands. One of my errands was to drive up to Clearfield and pick up some newly embroidered towels from our ourstanding embroidery shop and rescue supporters - Blackspool Embroidery. I was looking forward to seeing our newly embroidered towels, Vanessa and Tabitha (Mom and daughter who run the shop), and their dogs who usually hang out with them at the shop. Their yellow lab mix, Jack, was there and ready to say hello as soon as I walked in. Jack is only 3 years old, also somewhat exuberant, but significantly slowed down by being very overweight. (Th... Freedom is just another word?
2007-11-07 04:30:00 I’m really depressed tonight. I’m in Boston tonight for a business meeting tomorrow, and I phone Barbara a couple of hours ago before I headed off to dinner (at a very nice Afghan restaurant) with a friend of mine.
