Tight-Arsed Tuesday ? Free Dog Coat Pattern
2008-05-27 05:08:00
Got a shivering pup looking up at you with those big brown eyes? Given that we coat horses to keep them cosy in winter, coating a dog isn’t so much of an indulgence, really. For DIYers, this dog coat pattern on Circle of Crafters looks like a real winner. The author, Bobbi-Lynn, has thoughtfully included ...

Purrfect Cat Treat Review
2008-05-13 05:29:00
Cat treats are a little harder to come by than dog treats. It?s easy to see why ? treats tend to be mostly about training, and most people don?t even think about training their cats! That said, I think cats can and should get some training. Most cats can be taught to come when they?re ...

Catlivin? Climber
2008-03-13 13:24:00
I’ve always wanted a climby thing to keep my acrobatic cat amused and out of our hair, but as a lifelong renter the options aren’t so good. I can’t exactly be screwing avant-garde home-made climbers into the wall a la apartment living. And the thought of purchasing a standalone cat climber is a little ...

Aloveen Pet Shampoo Review
2008-02-29 07:01:00
Hoo boy do I have mixed feelings about this stuff. The vet handed it to me when Jack had a skin allergy and said: ?You can wash him with this three times a week.? Cue angelic choirs, guitar riffs and orchestra swells. Not that I?m an obsessive neat-freak or anything (far far from it). It?s just ...

How to stop puppy from biting
2008-02-16 04:12:00
The word ?mouthy? is dogpeople talk for ?nips fingers and toes ALL THE BLOODY TIME.? Our wee Jack was EXTREMELY mouthy as a puppy ? to the point where I was leery of having him mix with children. He never bit hard, but like a human infant ? everything went straight into the gob. The conventional ...

Cooking up Christmas Treats for Pets on a Prescription Diet
2007-12-21 06:19:00
It’s not fair is it? As if your furry pal wasn’t having a rough enough trot as it was, now his favourite livery, chickeny treats have got to be scratched from the menu. And you know it’s for his own good, but how can you tell him that? Weep no longer! Now, I’m not one ...

Fight Pet Stains with Forensic Technology! Yeah!
2007-12-13 04:40:00
We moved house last weekend, which was The. Funnest. Thing. Ever. Jack the dog and Mei Mei the kitten are now inner-city dwellers, and love it like a hipster loves his Bed Head hair products. We kept the move as non-traumatic as possible by storing the pets at their beloved Miss C?s place for the ...

Best Doggy Backpacks
2007-12-10 11:57:00
I’ve started working from out of home in a non pet-friendly office building.  Sigh. Benny doesn’t have his stay at home friend and I don’t get to hang out with my best barking buddy either. Double sigh. Dave on the other hand, runs his own business from a studio up the road with his partner and a daschund ...

Dr Harry Crossbar Rope Toy
2007-12-06 02:51:00
?Twenty dollars for a rope toy? Why not just use a bit of old rope?? Oh yeah. I can just hear my Mum?s voice. But here are the reasons you shell out for a rope toy: they’re made of a safe cottony stuff that won?t shred your dog?s innards if she swallows bits of it. ...

Tight-Arsed Tuesday ? Fastest Kong in the West
2007-12-04 02:16:00
Thanks to Jenny Turner for this great tip ? a raw chicken wing stuffed into a Kong so that it’s hard to get out makes a superfast, long lasting challenge for your dog. Just make sure the bone is raw, not cooked, so you don’t end up with expensive holes in poochie’s stomach. Just to ...

Climate Controlled Pet Carrier
2007-12-02 23:25:00
You know, at first I didn’t get this gadget.  To me it looked over engineered and amoral to boot. Hell, half the world’s starving and your dog’s getting carried about in air conditioned comfort!  C’mon! But then, as seems to happen a lot in my world, I found myself eating my own words.  We got a dog and ...

How to make dog behaviour problems disappear
2007-11-30 07:57:00
Dooce has just published the Best Post Ever, as she does, about her family?s rejuvenated relationship with Chuck. We all know dogs need daily walking, but Lordy, it?s hard to do it every single day of your life. And I can just imagine how much harder it gets when you throw young kids and busy ...

Etiquette for Off Leash Dog Park Behaviour - the Book
2007-11-28 21:48:00
You’ve seen the photos.  Proof that Benny loves his off leash parks.  But as you may recall I threw a pink fit when Benny was first introduced to the dogs in the park across the road.    Here he was, this little bundle of fur and light one minute ? and the incarnation of the wolf devil himself the next.  All that ...

Summer Cut for A Groodle
2007-11-23 03:53:00
I was hoping I could post you a great story about our success at grooming Jack ourselves. But when we factored in time, stress, and dog fur everywhere, it was just better to outsource. Dog grooming is like a mini war between the dog and the clippers, so really, your range of hairstyles is limited. ...

Tight-Arsed Tuesday ? Speedy Frozen Kongsicle
2007-11-20 00:46:00
Bringing up a bouncy pup while running a home business has made me quite the fiend for time management. My latest method for putting together a frozen Kong is fast ? even if I do say so myself. A frozen Kong turns a hot dog into a cool customer ? and keeps him ...

Triple Crown Everlasting Treat Ball Review
2007-11-19 04:35:00
I have found the new holy grail of dog toys ? the Triple Crown Everlasting Treat Ball . Our vet suggested we get one of these very early in the piece. ?You can feed him every meal in it. Because believe me,? she said, ?You?ll get sick of stuffing Kongs.? And she was right ? stuffing a ...

Driving the Blues Away with Four Legs and a Tail
2007-11-15 13:04:00
Every couple of months, I’d get the blues. Not bad enough for me to slit my wrists, but enough so that I’d hole up in the house for a while and watch bad tv.  But since Jacque, Louie, and Benny have arrived, life’s been looking brighter. The cats came first and the blues became a lighter shade.  Sure, I might be feeling kinda sad and ...

The Keys to Happiness
2007-11-09 01:50:00
Why are dogs so goddamn happy all the time? Check out Alan Cohen’s sweet homespun philosophizing here: Are you as happy as your dog? My favourite: “3. Seize the Day. Munchie regularly shows up at my front door asking to come in and play with me. Depending on what I am doing and how muddy his ...

Tight-arsed Tuesday - Two seconds to a happy cat
2007-11-06 06:44:00
Keeping cats indoors may be a sound moral choice, but it’s challenging when your cat is moping around unhappily, drumming her claws and flicking through the tv channels with heavy distant sighs. One of the (many) ways we keep our Cornish Rex kitten amused is by mixing up her physical environment all the time. She ...

Tight Arsed Tuesdays - the Worlds’s Best E-Book on Puppy Training
2007-10-30 11:45:00
If you’re planning to get a puppy, and you’re reading this, then you are lucky. Lucky. Lucky. Lucky. Because you can download and read Ian Dunbar’s e-book, “Before you get your puppy.” This is worth printing and reading in your lunch hour. If you can’t sneak it onto your boss’s printer, spend the money on ink! That’s how good it is. Some people have a natural affinity with dogs and can get them to do almost anything. The rest of us have two choices – either blame the dog (“sorry about your flowers/cat/right leg but he got dropped on his head as a pup…”) or find a way to educate ourselves. That’s where Ian comes in. Ian is one of the positive dog training movement’s favourite sons. Here’s what you’ll find in the book: Six Developmental Deadlines 1. Your Doggy Education (before searching) 2. Evaluating Puppy ’s Progress (before selection) 3. Errorless Housetraining (before homecoming) 4. Socialization with People (by 12 weeks of age) 5. ...

Pet Travel Post #1 - Planes, Trains and Automobiles
2007-10-30 01:18:00
Looks like Dave and I have the holiday bug.  A little less than 24 hours after returning from our Fan-bloody-fabulous trip to Darwin, we’re organising our next one.  And this time we’re taking Benny with us and I’ve begun undertaking a little research in lieu.  With Christmas just 8 weeks away (gulp!) I’m going to be posting up a “suite” of pet travel related posts over the next week. Pet Travel Transport Flying with your Furry Pals With Australian distances what they are and plane fares cheap as chips, our family will be hotfooting to our Chrissy destination on the wings of a jet. While some domestic flights (especially the ones with ultra cheap fares) might not cater to pet travel, most will.  But it is best if you can plan your trip well in advance and follow the airline regulations.  The best airlines will have written rules for pet travel. The majority of which look a little bit like this: Pets should be at least eight weeks old a...

John Howard Dog Toy
2007-10-24 07:58:00
Has politics gone to the dogs? Following in the steps of Miss D, I began my own investigation into toys that give joy to dog owners as much as the dog. And I came up with this one. Yup.  With only a little over a month until Australia goes to election, these little Prime minister John ny Howard ...
