Hawk Attack
2008-05-24 06:28:00 Yesterday I was about to get in the car to go to town when an all-fired ruckus broke out behind the house. Running round, we saw a massive flock of galahs and rosellas and such birds crazily swirling here and there and crying out desperately as they wheeled here and there. Then I noticed some hawk-like birds in amongst them. It was very hard to focus on them and get a clear view of exactly what they were, but it was clearly an attack upon the flock birds. read more » More About: Hawk , Attack

Wild Bird Talking - Success Stories - Sue helps a Fairy wren
2008-04-28 03:30:00 A fairy wren accidentally entered my friend Sue' s office one busy afternoon. Sue was flat out answering phone calls, when she noticed the bird agitatedly trying to escape. The phones kept ringing and Sue wasn't getting the chance to open the windows and pull the screen frame off to let the bird out. Meanwhile, the bird was getting even more desperate in her attempt to find a path and was endangering herself as she flew about the room and pushed herself against the glass windows. read more » More About: Stories , Success , Wild , Talking , Bird
Update
2008-04-20 11:30:00 Just to let you know about recent happenings with Maggie and Co, it's that time of year when the birds arrange their territories for the next twelve months. Not much action with our birds this year though (not yet, anyway). I got a clue that the Mags gang and Larry (grey butcherbird) gang have settled their quarrel. Last week, when I went up to the gate to call Larry, he and Maggie flew in side-by-side, then Maggie landed and Larry went to his nearby tree. But it was a definite signal to me that they are on amicable terms again. read more » More About: Update , Magpie

Is Wendy William?
2008-03-15 02:43:00 Over the past few months, our birds' feathers have all generally improved - Vicky's, for example, have grown nicely where she had a bald spot for about six months. But our new adult magpie, Wendy , has surprised us. Slowly but surely, her off-white neck feathers have got whiter - whiter and whiter. Are we going to have to change Wendy's name to William ? read more » More About: Magpie

Making Friends and Influencing Humans
2008-02-19 11:32:00 Maggie never forgets to impress and delight all his many friends and acquaintances, human or bird. It's his 'thing', the complete network builder. Yesterday, for example, I left for work in the car, and a few hundred yards up the street, the neighbour's dog (not a bad chap, but he chases cars) - you guessed it, chased the car. As it happened, I then remembered something I had to take with me, and stopped the car to check the boot (that's the trunk, for our American friends) to see if I had remembered it. read more » More About: Friends , Snake , Humans

Settling In
2008-02-19 11:25:00 Over the past few weeks our various baby birds have been gaining confidence and getting to know us better. At first when they come, they follow their parents around for food, then they try a bit for themselves, picking it up off the grass experimentally. (They have surprising difficulty when very young picking up their own food, even though they have already become accomplished fliers.) read more » More About: Magpie

Maggie does a remarkable thing
2008-01-28 06:25:00 Last Friday I was taking a water can up to the front gate to change the water in the bowl up there. Maggie was behind me pottering around. Suddenly I saw him running past me to beat me to the water bowl, getting there while I was still about six feet away, and then he stood facing me and drinking water. I had a nice chat with him, but the meaning of this action came home to me forcefully while I was walking back from the gate. He was trying to tell me that there was already water in the bowl and I didn't have to lug the big water can all that way. read more » More About: Thing , Magpie

A beautiful thing
2008-01-06 15:34:00 There is a beautiful thing about animals that I am sure readers who have the privilege to observe wild animals closely and make friendships with them will have also observed: we give them little things like food, that cost us next to nothing, for a long time they will they have no chance to give anything back; but when they do get that chance, they give everything they have. read more » More About: Beautiful , Thing , Magpie

Pigeons need our help!
2007-12-25 17:19:00 When Gitie and I set up WingedHearts.org, we wanted to keep everything positive, and try to work with those of you who also love animals as much as we do, to inspire others who haven't 'got it' yet, with our true stories of bird intelligence, emotion, and love. But an article in Maggie Wright's latest newsletter cannot be ingored, sad and negative though the subject is. (Maggie runs the maggiewright.net "See Animals Through Your Heart" site.) I cannot add anything to her words without losing my cool, so I simply reprint her article below: read more » More About: Pigeon , Pigeons

Bubs again
2007-12-16 07:53:00 Just a quick note to let you know that Vicky definitely has two very big bubs in her nest. Amazingly, her bubs are always very quiet. We don't hear a lot of squarking for food from them, and they always look very contented in the nest. I hope they stay in there a bit longer and get good and strong before they enture out.
The bubs
2007-12-13 10:57:00 At the end of last week I thought Vicky and Sophie both had babies in their nests, because they were both stacking food and flying back. Sadly, suddenly Sophie stopped and became miserable again, so it seems she has lost a second clutch this year. So many birds seem to have had bad luck in the district. It is odd, because the weather is wetter than it has been (it was drought for years until now), and one would think they know how to rear their babies in a wet season with lots of bugs to feed them. But many of our friends have also told us their magpies have lost babies. read more »
A Lucky Rescue Makes A Happy Family
2007-12-12 12:41:00 Driving to work this morning Ron saw a small bird walking awkwardly on the road, desperately trying to get away from a crow, while two of its friends who were trying their best to distract the crow were having no impact. Ron stopped the car and picked up the bird. He or she could not fly and it was hard to tell whether it was permanently injured. The bird was so happy to be picked up and Ron felt he certainly didn't want to be eaten by the crow. By the time Ron turned the car around and brought him home, holding him gently in his hand, the bird looked very comfortabl read more » More About: Family , Happy , Rescue , Lucky

Divebombing magpies
2007-12-06 13:29:00 The other day on the news there was a child who was attacked by a magpie, and tragically his eye was damaged. He was an amazing kid: the reporter asked him whose fault it was and he said Dad's, because dad forgot to tell him not to ride his bike in the magpie season. I wondered why it was only dad and not mum, but apart from that, it's a pretty wise way to look on life. But what I wanted to think about today was whether anything positive can be done to improve the sometimes poor relations between people and magpies. read more » More About: Magpie
Billy's Bubs
2007-12-01 13:41:00 I mentioned a while back that our neighbour's magpies, Billy and Polly, had had three or four bubs, and then I said I hadn't seen them around. Today Billy came down to see us after Maggie had gone off to his back paddock, and he stacked his beak and flew into the tree, where there were two bubs waiting. Good old Billy, who couldn't think about anything but his own stomach for years and who gave his poor old dad (now departed) apoplexy trying to get him to behave like a decent magpie, is now dutifully fathering his own kids. Good on you Billy! read more »
Understanding humans
2007-11-27 13:19:00 Since meeting Maggie I have never ceased to be amazed by how well the birds understand each other from different species, and how that understanding even extends to humans. We learned early on that they understood the concept of names. read more » More About: Humans , Understanding
