Pet Safety Tips: Toxic Food and Dogs....
2008-01-03 08:46:00 Many a dog owner has been known to affectionately refer to their dog as "the four-legged garbage disposal" as they will happily eat anything we are eating. Some of our favorite foods, however, can be toxic to our companions and it is important to keep these foods out of reach. The following can be toxic to your furry friend. chocolate onions grapes & raisins coffee grounds yeast dough macadamia nuts xylitol - a sweetener found in chewing gum, candy and breath fresheners Don't forget to throw away meat wrappers and packaging as well - and keep the garbage in a closed cabinet with a pet-proof lid. Keep in mind that it takes a lot less to make a little dog sick, so those with smaller companions must be most attentive to safety! More About: Safety , Dogs , Food , Tips , Toxic
Dog Quotes # 15
2008-01-03 08:38:00 "The Shar-pei is a creature that within the many folds of skin hides the magic conglomerate of the charm of a hippo, the courage of a lion, the sloth of a seal and the appetite of a pig. Yet through all this, it is lovable beyond measure. Ultimately it can win the heart of a hermit, the life of a workaholic, and the love of a dog-hater!- Anonymous More About: Quotes

Popular Paws # 16: Chihuahua
2007-12-31 09:45:00 Chihuahua: Gidget the Mascot from the Taco Bell Advert The Taco Bell chihuahua was a popular advertising figure and mascot used by Taco Bell. The Chihuahua is a breed commonly associated with Mexico, as are the tacos that the restaurant serves. The name of the dog used as a model is "Gidget" and in commercials, the dog (sometimes depicted as a Mexican revolutionary wearing a beret or as a bandit wearing a sombrero) was made to speak through special effects. His advertising catch-phrase was "¡Yo quiero Taco Bell!", Spanish for "I want Taco Bell!". It was subtitled on commercials as "I want some Taco Bell." The figure grew popular, so much so that even toy figures of the dog were produced. Taco Bell stopped showing the dog in advertisements in 2000 in order to pursue other campaigns. Ask Euro Puppy USA: "Continous Biting Problems"
2007-12-29 12:00:00 Question: Hello Mario I was wondering: what is the best way to get over the biting of a bull terrier? Everyone says they have the same problem. I was hoping you could give me some insight because I know you have dealt with some pretty wild dogs. She is crazy...no, not to crazy, since she has learned to sit, stay somewhat and she is pretty good about going potty-ing outside. Answer: Tim, The best way to stop that biting is to each time she tries, to hold her mouth shut, shake her head firmly and say the word NO! If she continues, do it again and again until she gets the point. Most of this is play, but you must teach her to stop before it becomes a real nuisance. This behavior is quite typical of all young pups. Let me know if it works. There are other methods. Though this is the one most commonly used. Mario Response: Yes Mario, I agree it is just play but when I hold her muzzle she thinks it's a game. I have tried pinning her down and trying to make her submit but she ... Her dog paintings capture the candid, the intense, and the more quirky nature of our beloved companions. Her art can be seen at Pet Portraits in Pastel. The American Cocker Spaniel originated in the U.K and was brought to Canada and the United States in the late 1800s. The signature trait of the American Cocker Spaniel is its dark, expressive eyes that reflect a happy, loving, and active nature. They have long hanging ears, a rounded, refined and cleanly chiseled head with silky, feathered, medium-length coat. Cockers are divided by the breed standard into three varieties: black, ASCOB (Any Solid Color Other than Black), and parti-colors. Their name cocker is commonly held to stem from their use to hunt the woodcock birds in England, but today this breed is used to hunt a variety of game-birds and water-fowl. A Spaniel is res... The Origin and Evolution of Dogs
2007-12-28 09:12:00 All dogs, from the German Shepherd to the tiny Poodle, are direct descendants of wolves. They can all breed together and produce fertile offspring. Technically they are of the same species. But before that, wolves descended from a species knows as the Tomarctus - a creature that roamed the earth over 15 million years ago. This is what a Tomartus looked like. Not much of a Poodle, but certain canine features are indeed noticable... More About: Dogs , Evolution , Origin

2007-12-19 15:57:00 Artist, Sarah Theophilus distinctive style as well as her passion for dogs take the contemporary approach to the tradition of pet portraits much further. Her dog paintings capture the candid, the intense, and the more quirky nature of our beloved companions. Her art can be seen at Pet Portraits in Pastel. A Pug is a toy dog breed with a wrinkly face and a small body. They were bred to adorn the laps of the Chinese Emperors during the Shang Dynasty (1766-1122 BC), in Eastern China, where they were known as "Lo-Chiang-Se" or "Foo". The Pug's popularity spread to Tibet, where they were mainly kept by monks, and then their popularity went onto Japan, and finally to Europe. The breed was first imported in the late 16th and 17th centuries by merchants from the Dutch East Indies Trading Company and became the dog of the Dutch Royal family. Their fine, glossy coats can be apricot, fawn, silver or black. The word "pug" may have come from the old English word: Pugg, which was an affect... More About: Paintings

Canine Obesity and the Festive Season...
2007-12-18 18:19:00 With the festive season upon us, looking out for the health of your dog is just as important as looking out for your own waistline. The saying goes: you are what you eat. Often ones lifestyle is inadvertently mimicked by your faithful friend as well. It is imperative to look out for the weight of your dog. If you feel you are not overfeeding him, take him or her to the vet for a full physical. A lot of the time, substantial weight gain is due to the fact that well-meaning owners give out more treats than is actually healthy. Canine Obesity can more often than not, be traced back to the owner. However, sudden weight gain can also be due to hyperthyroidism, or Cushings Disease. Festive season equals eating more. Hence, it is no surprise that there are more scraps as well. With guests galore and preparations all around, pooch time is often decreased to a minimum. You should say time-out and go for quick walks with your furry friend. Take a break from cooking or from decorating th... More About: Season

2007-12-17 10:05:00 Butkus the Bullmastiff: from Rocky I (1976) and Rocky II (1979) At the time of ownership, Stallones pet Bullmastiff, Butkus, appeared in the first Rocky film as an often-teased favorite pet of Balboas who lived in Adrians pet shop. In the Film, Butkus was given to Rocky as a gift from Adrian to keep him company while he trained. In real life however, Butkus was Sylvester Stallone's dog. Stallone took the 145-pound (61 Kg) Butkus on the three-day train trip from L.A. to Philadelphia for the exterior filming of the film. Ask Euro Puppy USA : "Potty Training for Puppies"
More articles from this author:2007-12-04 08:36:00 Question: Dear Mario, On my puppy's potty training how do you find it best? Just rewards when he goes outside? Also how do I get him to start going to the door to let me know? I know it's a work in progress. What do you suggest? Answer: Each one is an individual and will learn at his or her own rate. The fundamental way to get started is to take him outside right after he has eaten or drank his water. If he does do his business, praise him well. If he does not go, then either put him in the kennel we shipped him in until he cries to get out, then at that time take him outside again. Repeat this until he does go. Then you let him run the house. I have found that the "Wee Wee pads" work very well to train them to do on paper versus anywhere in the home. You may need to place a few down in different areas at first. But as he learns you can get him used to one spot only. If he does go in the house, scold him with a firm NO. Never hit him. This only makes him hand shy and it ... More About: Euro , Training , Puppy , Potty Training , Puppies 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
