Canines in Shining Armor...Our Wardogs from the Past...
2008-02-08 09:12:00 We are all familiar with the stories of Lancelot, and King Arthur. Our Knights in Shining Armor , from our childhood stories….well what about the canines in shining armor? We should not forget about these dogs of war, that for some reason went unnoticed in the legends about knights and fair maidens! Did you know that in the Middle Ages, Mastiffs were dressed in light armor from head to toe? A pot of flaming sulphur was strapped to their armor… Yes…they were then made to run into battle against mounted knights. And what about the Second World War? Russians trained dogs to run suicide missions between the tracks of German tanks with mines strapped on their backs! But long before this, war dogs were also used before the birth of Christ. Most popular, were war dogs in the Germanic tribes. When the Roman legions set foot on English soil, their dogs wore shining armor and had “wide bodies and stocky figures”. This makes us think of our modern mastiff dog breeds. The Sumerian, Assy... More About: Past
Dog Lamps # 5: Wacky or Tacky?
2008-02-08 08:42:00 Every week Euro Puppy portrays 2 dog lamps. Is one wacky and the other one tacky? Are both wacky? Or both tacky? We will leave it up to you to decide. While having our own beliefs about them, we would love your comments...are they wacky or tacky? Enjoy.... Dog Lamp # 1: Well....this lamp is called: "Goebel Red Dog Perfume Lamp with Glass Eyes". It is made of translucent porcelain. Both the dog and his eyes have a warm, magical glow when the light is turned on. ( no sarcasm intended of course!) He has a circle of holes in the top of his head for the heat of the bulb to escape so that he won't crack. There is a small reservoir on the back of his neck where perfume was placed. The heat of the lamp warmed the perfume and gently spread the desired fragrance into the air. Perfume lamps were popular in the 1920's and 1930's and came in many shapes and sizes... a forerunner of the air freshener, but infinitely more romantic! The cord has an old style, blimp shaped, in-line bakelite sw...

Ask Euro Puppy USA: "Misunderstanding Orders":
2008-02-06 18:12:00 Question: Hi! When your dog just doesn't sit down; instead just lies down...or when you say lie down and it sits down instead, what can be done? Answer: Training a dog or pup to respond to commands often takes time and patience. The first and most important thing is that he or she has your attention. For this it is best if he/she is wearing a choke collar and is leashed. Gentle pulls on the leash will almost always get their attention. If this particular dog has never responded to these commands, then you need to start from scratch. First, while holding him close with the leash, tell him to sit with a firm but non-threatening voice. If he does not respond, then you should repeat the command. This time you tug down on his rear until he sits. Once he accomplishes this, you praise him well in words and perhaps even a doggie treat. Walk him for a bit then repeat the command. Again, if he does not sit, do the same motions. This may take some time until he gets the point. For d... More About: Euro , Puppy , Orders

Dog Poems: " A Dog's Best Friend"
2008-02-06 09:10:00 A Dog's Best Friend O Lord, don't let me once forget How I love my trusty pet- Help me learn to disregard canine craters in my yard. Show me how to be a buddy even when my sofa's muddy, Don't allow my pooch to munch postal carriers for lunch, Shield my neighbor's cat from view, guide my steps around the doo, Train me not to curse and scowl, when it's puppy's night to howl, Grant I shan't awake in fear with a cold nose in my ear, Give me patience without end- Help me be; A DOG'S BEST FRIEND. 4 Problems Associated With Body Language And Dog Training:
2008-02-04 08:55:00 You must have noticed that sometimes your dog flinches away when you hug him. Sometimes, no matter how wide your welcoming arms are, or how coaxing your voice is, your dog will not come when called. The problem may not be due to bad breeding, lack of consistency, or lack of training time. You may simply be sending your dog the wrong body language messages. Some examples of these and how to overcome them: • Our body language vastly differs from the body language of canines. As humans, we try to catch someone’s attention by leaning forward or towards a person. Translated into canine body language this means dominance. We may put our hand on each other’s shoulders. This is a simple sign of affection for us, but for a dog this equates with expressions of dominance again. It is simply interpreted as pushiness. When a dog has the habit of urinating submissively, it is advisable not to lean forward and pat the dog on the head when greeting it. A dog or puppy will feel less intimidated an... "Sawubona Euro Puppy". Hello Euro Puppy. Africa Welcomes You.
2008-02-01 16:17:00 Euro Puppy has made roots for itself in Africa , much like a huge Baobab tree. Africa conjures up images of the "Big Five" and one would think dogs don't play an important role in the lives of Africans. Well they actually do. Africa can boast with a number of rare indigenous dog breeds. These include the Basenji from Congo, the Rhodesian Ridgeback from Zimbabwe; the Saluki from Egypt, the Aidi and the Sloughi from Morocco, the Azawakh from Mali, not to mention the Africanis (or Zulu Dog) and the Boerboel from South Africa. However, interestingly enough, more and more people from Africa are seeking to import dogs from Europe. Dog lovers from Kenya, South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria cannot match the uniqueness of the so-called large-bodied fighter dogs from Europe. The Rottweiler, the Neapolitan Mastiff, and the Dogue de Bordeaux to name just a few, are some of these powerful breeds. People living in Africa have started to surf the net and are looking for top quality puppies for sal... More About: Euro
How to Find A Reliable Dog Breeder?
2008-02-01 11:42:00 This is a question that a lot of people ask, when looking for the right puppy. With so many dog breeds, and so many breeders out there, one is left wide-eyed and uncertain. But first to answer this question, we must ask: what is a reliable dog breeder? Points to consider when looking for a trustworthy dog breeder: • How long has the breeder been involved with this particular breed? If it is a recently declared popular breed be cautious of someone who has jumped on the bandwagon to earn a few quick bucks. They may not have the best interests of the breed at heart. • Does the breeder produce dogs that differ from the typical examples of the breed? Deviations that don’t conform to the breed standard; sold as "rare” should not be ignored. Non-standard variations of purebred dogs (eg. white Dobermans, longhaired Whippets, miniature Dalmatians, etc.) are undesirable by trustworthy breeders. • Are the animals being bred actually purebred dogs belonging to a breed recognized by some l... What Is The Best Dog Breed?
2008-02-01 09:57:00 Well, there are over 150 registered dog breeds. Apart from this, there are those that are purebred and not registered; designer-dogs and so many sizes, colors and temperaments of pavement specials that it is not an easy question to answer. Euro Puppy has done a bit of research. We collected 20 comments and made an analysis at the end of it: •“It depends on a person who likes the dog...but for me, any breed as long as it makes you feel comfortable and can make it as your best friend.” •“The Border Collie is a truly great family dog and demonstrably is the most trainable for commands.” •“The Japanese Akita, besides being fiercely loyal, is definitely the strongest animal to protect your children against stray bears.” •“A wild mix of a shepherd dog with real wolf, or the coyote with a Keeshond! These wild mixes are truly the most perspicacious (keenly aware) due to their inherent advanced outdoor awareness (with a notably higher neurological brain stem) than any domesticated dog.” •“... Dog Lamps # 4: Wacky or Tacky?
2008-02-01 09:01:00 Every week Euro Puppy portrays 2 dog lamps. Is one wacky and the other one tacky? Are both wacky? Or both tacky? We will leave it up to you to decide. While having our own beliefs about them, we would love your comments...are they wacky or tacky? Enjoy.... Dog Lamp # 1: On paper, the idea of a little desktop doggie lamp might be cute, but somewhere along the line it just all went so horribly awry. From its demonic red eyeballs to its disturbing nostril hole charger, it’s just a bit out there. There is a bizarre umbrella lighting fixture that’s been implanted into the canine’s brain and if shoving a charger into the dog's nose holes isn’t bad enough, you can also juice up the battery by plugging his ass into a wall socket. If the ASPCA would start taking complaints about inanimate objects, now would be as good a time as ever. It comes in white or yellow colors. Dog Lamp # 2: This lamp is made of marble Borzoi dog figurines. The idea behind it was to incorporate antique and vi...
Dog Art: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Paintings
2008-02-01 08:46:00 Artist, Sarah Theophilus’ distinctive style as well as her passion for dogs take the contemporary approach to the tradition of pet portraits much further. Her dog paintings capture the candid, the intense, and the more quirky nature of our beloved companions. Her art can be seen at Pet Portraits in Pastel. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small spaniel with a coat of substantial silky hair of moderate length, often with a mild wave. Four colours are recognized: Black and Tan;Tri-colored; consisting of black, white and brown; Red or also known as Ruby colored, and a color classification called Blenheim, which is chestnut brown on white. The breed originated in the 20th century. Its roots can be found in the older King Charles Spaniel of the Restoration. The goal of the breeders was to get back the origianal longer limbs and straighter nose of the very first King Charles Spaniel. Over the years there were numerous crossings with Asian toy breeds like the pug, and the king Ch... More About: Paintings

Dog Poems: "Welcome Home" - by Louella C.Poole
2008-01-31 07:55:00 WELCOME HOME I saw him coming up the street, So spent and weary that his feet Seemed like two heavy weights of lead; Ah, he had known so hard a day, Small wonder that he looked that way, And slouched along with drooping head! Then, suddenly, with frantic shout, A little yellow dog rushed out a yard, To greet the tired man; He licked his hands, he kissed his face, Then dashed ahead in eager race, Then back again he gaily ran! The tired worker laughed aloud, Straightened his shoulders; through the crowd Pressed on; his feet seemed to take wings So fast he walked as he went up the street towards home... The yellow pup: all joyous leaps and caperings. O little dog so fond and true, Much good in life you surely do When you can make a man so old and spent Forget fatigue -- make him so glad He acts like any madcap lad, And laughs aloud with merriment! -Louella C.Poole More About: Poems , Home

The World’s Worst Genetic Mutation in a Dog:
2008-01-29 15:37:00 No, this dog does not have Arnold Schwarzenegger’s genes and no ….she hasn’t even spent a day at the gym. That’s right. She. Meet Wendy. The Whippet. Not exactly the most feminine representative of her breed, Wendy is a result of a genetic mutation. I first thought she was the best altered digital photo of the century, but (sadly?) she is real! Wendy - the dog whose appearance is a long way from the usual long, lean and sleek look of her breed- lives on a farm in Victoria, Vancouver Island, Canada and is what scientists refer to as : “ double-muscled” or a " Bully Whippet". Due to the genetic defect, nature rewarded her with twice the muscle size compared to the other representatives of her breed. Resembling the cross between Schwarzenegger and the Incredible Hulk, Wendy still has the heart, lungs and head of a normal-sized Whippet. Only her musculature is twice that of her breed. Her weight is 4st4lb (28 kg). It doesn’t sound that bad, but it is twice that of the normal weight... More About: World , The World

Now You Can Also Be An Expert At Choosing The Right Dog Collar!
2008-01-28 08:20:00 What is the best collar for my dog? Well, for the majority of dogs, a traditional nylon or leather dog collar is enough. There are so many styles of dog collars to choose from. This depends on the size and disposition of a dog as well as your training need. There are dog collars for specific situations and these are as follows: Traditional Dog Collar s should ride high on a dog’s neck; not loose so that it slides down near the top of his shoulder blades. The collar should not be too loose since it will slip over the dog’s head. It should also not be tight as this restricts breathing and may cause coughing or choking. A collar should be snug with enough room to fit two fingers between the dog's neck and his collar. The collar size on growing puppies should be checked regularly. Use a tape measure to measure your dog’s neck, and then add on two to three inches for safety. Collar and lead width should match your dog’s size. Smaller leads are for small dogs and puppies, and wider, more ... More About: Expert
Popular Paws # 20: Dogue de Bordeaux
2008-01-28 08:13:00 Dogue de Bordeaux : Hooch from the Movie: Turner and Hooch (1989) Tom Hanks plays Scott Turner, the Police-officer, who has 3 days left in the local police department before he moves to a bigger city to get some "real" cases, not just misdemeanors. Then, a man named Amos Reed is murdered, and Turner sets himself on the case. The closest thing to a witness in the case is Amos Reed's dog, Hooch, that Turner has to take care so that it doesn't get "put to sleep".The energetic Dogue de Bordeaux promptly sets about destroying Turner's house and turning his life upside-down. Eventually Turner, with the help of Hooch, uncovers a money smuggling and laundering operation led by his Chief, and Hooch gives his life to save Turner. Dogue de Bordeaux's are strong dogs that are loyal and devoted as well. More About: Popular
