Popular Paws # 14: Bullmastiff
2007-12-17 10:05:00
Butkus the Bullmastiff: from Rocky I (1976) and Rocky II (1979) At the time of ownership, Stallone’s pet Bullmastiff, Butkus, appeared in the first Rocky film as an often-teased favorite pet of Balboa’s who lived in Adrian’s pet shop. In the Film, Butkus was given to Rocky as a gift from Adrian to keep him company while he trained. In real life however, Butkus was Sylvester Stallone's dog. Stallone took the 145-pound (61 Kg) Butkus on the three-day train trip from L.A. to Philadelphia for the exterior filming of the film. The Bullmastiff’s rough look went well with the rough look, that the movie offered. Bullmastiffs are exceptionally devoted to their owners and make great guard dogs and pets as well.

Pet Safety Tips: Toxic Houseplants and Dogs.....
2007-12-14 09:11:00
Plants provide beauty and fresh air to our indoor spaces. However, your puppy or dog may see houseplants as an extra snack or a toy. This can prove dangerous, since some plants are toxic. Learn which plants are potentially toxic and keep them high out of reach. Some toxic houseplants include: • Amaryllis • Azalea • Caladium • Creeping Charlie • Dracaena • Dieffenbachia • Easter Lily • Golden Pothos • Mistletoe • Philodendron • Peace Lily • Rhododendron • Lilies • Foxglove • Daffodils • Rhubarb leaves • Yew • Castor bean • Sago palm • Kalanchoe • Tulip bulbs Now with the festive season upon us, please do keep Mistletoe in mind. Although you might want to get close to your loved one under it, don't let your furry friend take a bite! If you may not be all that knowledgable about your plants and their latin names, please consult someone who is.

Popular Paws # 13: Bulldog
2007-12-10 09:32:00
Hector the Bulldog : from the Looney Tunes. (1950-) Hector the Bulldog is an animated cartoon character in the Warner Bros., Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of cartoons. Hector is a muscle-bound bulldog with gray fur. He walks pigeon-toed and his face bears a perpetual scowl between two immense jowls. He was a minor player in several Tweety and Sylvester cartoons directed by Friz Freleng throughout the 1950s. His usual role is to protect Tweety from Sylvester, usually at Granny’s request. He typically does this through brute strength alone. Hector is played by voice actor Frank Welker. Typical to his breed, under that constant frown, Bulldogs are actually quite lovable characters!

Classifying Dogs into Categories:
2007-12-07 09:32:00
Classifying dogs into categories began with the Romans. They had the following 6 categories: house dogs, shepherd dogs, sporting dogs, war dogs, dogs that ran by scent, and dogs that ran by sight. Interestingly enough, Mosaics meaning "Beware of the Dog" could even be found on doorsteps in ancient Roman cities. Today, more than three hundred breeds of dogs exist worldwide. The American Kennel Club recognizes 148 breeds which are classified into 7 categories: Terrier, Working, Sporting, Hound, Herding, Toy and Non-sporting.

2007-12-06 12:17:00
As with all things German, be that an appliance or a car, perfection is always expected. It is thus not surprising that the Rottweiler is a perfect breed as well. Of German origin, the Rottweiler is one of the most beautiful and most misunderstood dogs. Euro Puppy's top breeders have used this perfection to their advantage to carry on the noble European Rottweiler lines. At Euro Puppy, there are gorgeous Rottweiler puppies for sale, which will grow into powerful specimens. Due to its rather ominous look, Rottweilers are often believed to be the most vicious of all the dog breeds. In the hands of a responsible owner, a well-trained and socialized Rottweiler can be a reliable and alert dog that is a loving companion as well. Being intelligent creatures, it is not surprising that the police far and wide utilize the Rottweiler for its keen sense of smell, observation, and trainability. Apart from making great police dogs, Rottweilers make great protection dogs as well! The Germans g...

Dog Art: Yorkshire Terrier Paintings
2007-12-06 09:15:00
Artist, Sarah Theophilus’ distinctive style as well as her passion for dogs take the contemporary approach to the tradition of pet portraits much further. Her dog paintings capture the candid, the intense, and the more quirky nature of our beloved companions. Her art can be seen at Pet Portraits in Pastel. The Yorkie was bred as a ratter, used to kill mice and rats in small places and they originated in Yorkshire , which is a rugged region in northern England. Yorkshire Terriers were given their breed name in 1874, and were first introduced in the United States in 1872. They have now become the second most popular dog breed in the United States, trailing only the Labrador Retriever, according to the ACK statistics of 2006. The Yorkie has a free, jaunty gait, with both head and tail held high. Toy stature does not necessarily mean frail or fragile. The breed standard dictates that a Yorkshire Terrier must weigh no more than seven pounds while being 8 and 9 inches tall. There is n...

Euro Puppy Works With Only the Best European Havanese Breeders!
2007-12-05 18:15:00
The "Little Dog from Havana" was developed in Cuba, and was brought to the island country by Spanish sailors. The Havanese - as it became known- was considered a rare dog, and the Cuban Revolution didn’t do much to perpetuate their gene-pool. Many of the rich landowners escaped, leaving their dogs behind. By 1970, there were only 11 of these candy-floss dogs in the US, and thanks to the rigorous and well-meaning breeders within the US and Euro pe, their number and popularity has grown. Euro Puppy has been working with top Havanese breeders from Europe since the onset. These are breeders who have extensive knowledge about the breed standards and take an active role in socializing the Havanese puppies; making sure that they are healthy and happy puppies. This is an imperative character trait of these little dogs, even as they mature into adulthood. Euro Puppy has a history of working with only the best Havanese breeders and a guarantee has always been given to them concerning the home...
