Christmas Time

What dogs do on Spring Break

Farley thinks he is small

Puppy Eyes

West Cliff Trail

This is a paved trail that goes for several miles along the cliffs of Santa Cruz.  We stopped at one of the lookouts to watch the surfers down below in the water.  Dory was not too sure about this but stopped to sniff the ground cover and watch for a minute. STAIRS!!!!

Dory just loves stairs.  We took her to a friends house awhile ago and she spent about 10 minutes running up and down the stairs.  She loves having people sit at the top and bottom of the stairway and play "come Dory."  She went straight for the stairs at the beach in these pictures and usually easily beats us to the top.  She has an A frame for agility and she likes it too, and we find her out in the backyard just standing at the top of it some days.  She is quite the climber. Gus-Gus and Dory do their destructive thing.  They rip and tear at their toys, shred paper and anything they can get their paws on.  Gus-Gus likes to shred paper, water bottles, and generally anything plastic.  Dory prefers paper goods and cardboard to shred and cloth.  They also play a lot of tug with their toys; Dory likes to lay down and Gus-Gus drags her around the room on her belly.  She does the same thing when we play tug with her; she just loves to be dragged. Ping Pong really?

Dory lives with two other dogs that are both Basset Hound mixes.  She is the only one that can jump high and she tends to get up on anything she can.  But she really can't play ping-pong. Dory's House

Dory came to us from a rescue and was completely crate trained.  She just loves her crate and knows it as "Dory's House ."  We now just leave the door open since she is completely potty trained and nightly she will go put herself to bed.  After she puts herself to bed she gets mad at us for not going to bed early enough and leaving the light on too late and will just stare at us.   I think she feels safe in her crate, we try to keep it her safe spot and actually have it behind a chair.  I lined the bottom with kitty litter to absorb odor and also so it is softer to sleep on than the molded plastic.  Then the gravel is covered with blankets and her "princess" (red velvet) pillow. Dory Goes Tide Pooling

This is Dory on a high tide day at the Mitchel Cove dog beach in Santa Cruz, CA.  There were lots of puddles and tide pools to look at, and rocks to climb.  Dory had a good time sniffing and being at the beach.  "Beach" is definitely becoming one of her favorite words.  The dogs are allowed off leash at this beach at certain times but there is no gated entry so Dory is always on leash because of her bird chasing fetish.  This dog beach really could use some signage with the name of the beach as well as some dog rules.  The dog beach about a mile away just closed and I thought this would become a more popular place but there is always only one or two dogs there at a time.  This time there wasn't even any seaweed to smell the place up. Garage Sale Puppy

This is how Dory helped at our garage sale.   She also helped us take a few pics one night of some of the stuff to list on Ebay and posed cutely.  I am not sure if she helped us sell anything but she did make the day happier. Hopefully she also made a few more people hike up the driveway. Miyuki Dog Park

We took Dory to the Miyuki Dog Park in San Jose, CA.  She seemed to like it here.  It is all new artificial turf and crushed gravel.  There is a doggie drinking fountain, benches, and trees.  Dory likes going to new places to sniff but she usually does not play the first time at a new place and sometimes just follows me around.  There were only about 10 other dogs there and she was not interested in any of them, probably because she did not know them. Sunny Day Out

This was one of Dory's more busy days at the beach.  Lots of running, sniffing, digging, splashing, and meeting other dogs.  Then the ride home was really quiet; she just laid down on a towel in the backseat and enjoyed the ride home, as one tired pup. As they say, 'A tired dog is a well behaved dog'. Here are a few more pics of our day at the beach over winter break.  We just went for a few hours on a sunny day down to a local beach.  This beach requires dogs to be on leash at all times but we like it all the same as Dory is a beagle and is not trusted off leash anyway.  There is a dog beach nearby but it tends to have a lot of seaweed. Beach fun digging a hole

Dory loves to dig and especially at the beach.  She tends to get really sandy.  She sticks her whole head in the hole and sniffs sometimes and ends up with a nose full of sand.  She digs at home as well but this is not usually as welcome as she has tunnelled out of the yard on several occasions and dug up a too many plants. Aptos Dog park at Polo Grounds park

The Aptos Polo Grounds park in Santa Cruz County is mostly tanbark and some dirt.  There are really nice dogs and people that come here to play.  The dogs seem to really enjoy themselves.  Surf City coffee shop between the dog park and freeway that has a fenced dog area as well, so it is a nice stop along the way. My husband is happy to get a good vanilla latte on the way into to the dog park. read more

Farley is the biggest singer of the hounds.  He likes to sing every time the piano is played and gets the other dogs going, too.  Farley also starts howling at any sirens in a full hound howl.  The other younger dogs try and just don't quite get it but they are all hounds and trying to learn.  Dory also bays at cats in a really high pitch horrible ear piercing cry. Scott?s Valley Dog Park

The Scott s Valley Dog park is a very large dog park in a nice community.  This dog park is 100% tanbark; I was told it was donated by local tree trimming companies.  This works well since the area is known for large amounts of rain and the tanbark makes the park useable year round.  My dog has taken some time to get use to the tanbark and much prefers dirt and mud.  But I prefer less mud. But there are rumors that the park will be moving to the north side of town sometime in 2008, near the high school. We will have to wait and see though. Mitchell?s Cove Dog Beach

The Mitchell 's Cove Dog Beach has some weird rules and hours but is the only off leash beach currently in miles!  It is nearly impossible to find as it is just a stairwell leading down to the beach and I am not even sure it has a sign stating ?Mitchell?s beach? much less dog rules or hours.  It tends to have a lot of dead seaweed lying around.  Sometimes it is nice and other times it smells.  I think dog lovers should take some action to clean up this beach and get better signage. Gus-Gus Dress Up

Gus-Gus is ready for every occasion.  He is a docile dog and loves to dress up because he gets to be the center of attention.  Gus-Gus loves it when the camera comes out and just follows us around.  He knows that he gets all the love and dog biscuits when he dresses up.  He has a great ability to just lounge around in all kinds of hats. Ryland Dog Park

This downtown San Jose park was hard to find.  It is off of N. First Street and buried under a freeway overpass in the middle of a high-rise apartment complex (we have actually seen this kind of setup before).  The city boasts that this is a dry place to play even in the rain.  I wonder how the gravel gets washed to keep the smell down without the rain?   It was a small neighborhood style dog park also not in the best part of the city but everyone needs to exercise their dog.  The mural made it quite pretty for such a small area.
