Cat Diabetes
2008-03-21 17:11:00
A UK-wide study of feline diabetes mellitus found 1-in-230 cats are likely to develop the disease, with a 1-in-57 chance among Burmese cats. This means around 40,000 of Britain's 8 - 9 million pet cats are likely to develop diabetes. In the USA, with its predominantly indoor-only, dry cat-food culture of cat ownership, there has been a fivefold increase since 1977. According to Danielle Gunn-Moore, Professor of Feline Medicine at the Royal School of Veterinary Studies at Edinburgh University, changes in feline lifestyle are the main contributory factor in obesity and diabetes. Pet cats get less exercise and more calories than their predecessors. A confined, bored cat will pass its time eating and sleeping. Pedigree cats may have increased risk due to being confined indoors through fear of theft.According to the report in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, veterinary records for 14,030 cats and found 61 had diabetes. Increased lifespan is also a factor as elderly cats are m...

Effects of Cat Obesity
2008-03-16 21:02:00
This are some information about cat obesity. You can use it to make your cat more healthy:).Obese cats are just like obese humans, are generally less healthy and have shorter life expectancies. The detrimental affects of obesity include:* Cardiovascular disease* Diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes), specifically late onset diabetes.* Hepatic lipidosis (a type of liver disease)* Lameness due to arthritis (joints wear out due to carrying too much weight)* Cystitis (lower urinary tract disease).Because obese cats feel less healthy, they are less likely to take exercise and, if the owner doesn't reduce the number of calories fed to the cat, they become more obese. Moderate to severe obesity should not be ignored. Maintaining the cat's bodyweight close to optimal (this can be determined by your vet based on the cat's size and age) avoids obesity-associated diseases.Technorati Tags : cat healthy | cat obesity

Identifying Cat Obesity
2008-03-13 12:00:00
Cats vary greatly in their sizes and weights. Overweight is therefore assessed using "body condition scoring".This are few tips to check whether your cat have obesity or not:Does the cat have a sagging belly or wobbly apron? How easy is it to feel the cat's ribs? If they cannot be felt at all, it is a sign of too much "padding". How active is the cat? Does the cat have difficulty reaching its back or bottom to wash itself?None of the above is a single indicator of overweight. For example many cats have a loose apron of skin. In some breeds it is genetic, it may also be due to previous weight loss or to pregnancy.

Why is aspirin so dangerous to cats?
2008-02-20 04:16:00
by: Julia - Cat WorldAspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is one of the most well known and popular over the counter drugs available. It is easy to assume that it is safe for cats, but this is definitely not the case.Unlike humans, cats do not metabolise aspirin very slowly. It is extremely easy to give a cat a fatal overdose in as little as a single tablet. The biological half-life of aspirin is 37.5 hours in cats, meaning that it takes 3 days to remove half of the drug from the body. Aspirin toxcity occurs when a guardian intentionally gives the cat a high dosage of aspirin, gives aspirin over a prolonged period, or accidentally gives a product containing aspirin.Aspirin toxicity can lead to kidney and liver damage.Symptoms of aspirin poisoning?DepressionHyperexcitabilityLoss of balanceVomiting, may contain bloodDiarrheaAnorexiaAnemiaGastric ulcersLiver necrosisHyperthermia* If you cat has symptom above, your cat can seizures, coma or death. So you must take your cat to vet immediately.Tec...

Cat Chewing
2008-02-18 17:34:00
A Cat Chewing Can Cause You Problems and be a Danger to Itself. Some cats, and especially kittens, love to chew at things. Often they chew things which they should not chew like electrical cords!A cat chewing an electrical cord could, of course, be disastrous, not only from the danger of shock but also of choking. Small pieces of cord can get lodged in your cat's intestine with very serious results. As far as you can keep electric cord out of the reach of your cat. Most cats will chew on the thinner cables rather than the thicker ones. Where practicable, you can try grouping and tying thinner cables together so as to make them too thick for your chewing cat's fancy. Alternatively, tie thin cords to thicker ones. There is split tubing that you can cover cords with that your cat should not be able to chew through. Many cats are repelled by citrus or bitter apple so they won't go near the cable. But fruit spray may not stop your feline chewing. After one taste of that your cat should b...

Why Cat Drink Dirty Water?
2008-02-18 17:26:00
By: Larry ChamberlainYou know that cats should always have a supply of water, especially if you are feeding them dried food. There on your nice clean kitchen floor is a bowl of nice clean fresh water, in a nice clean bowl. What does your cat do? Maybe gives the bowl a sniff and walks away from it, or just ignores the bowl completely, as if water were the last thing a self respecting cat would consider drinking.Tap water is usually treated with chemicals, often chlorinated strongly enough for a cat to smell it. Cats noses are far more sensitive than human noses and many cats find this chemical odor very offensive.Stale water in puddles and pools has a far more attractive smell are far as a cat is concerned. As well as the off-putting odor of chemicals in tap water, cats find the smell of detergents repugnant. So, because you diligently clean your cat's water bowl in the interest of hygiene, the detergent that you use deters your cat from drinking from it.You use the same detergent to...

Cat Is Your Boss?
2008-02-13 03:55:00
Do you select your friends based on how well your cats like them? Does your desire to collect cats intensify during times of stress? Do you buy more than 50 pounds of cat litter a month? Do you scoop out the litter box after each use? Do you wait at the box with the scoop in your hand?Do you think it's cute when your cat swings on the drapes or licks the butter?Do you admit to non-cat owners how many cats you really have? Do you sleep in the same position all night because it annoys your cats when you move? Do you kiss your cat on the lips? Do you feed your cat tidbits from the table with your fork? Does your cat sleep on your head? Do you like it? Do you have more than four opened but rejected cans of cat food in the refrigerator? Do you watch bad TV because the cat is sleeping on the remote? Did you buy a video tape of fish swimming in an aquarium to entertain your cat?Would you rather spend a night at home with your cat than go out on a bad date? Do you give your cat presents an...

Cat Bath Like Martial Art
2008-02-13 03:32:00
by :Bud HerronSome people say cats never have to be bathed. They say cats lick themselves clean. I've spent most of my life believing this folklore. The time comes, however, when a person must face reality. When he must look squarely in the face of massive public sentiment to the contrary and announce,"This cat smells like a port-a-potty on a hot day in Juarez."Know that although the cat has the advantages of quickness and utter disregard for human life, you have the advantage of strength. Pick a very small bathroom. If your bathroom is more than four feet square, I recommend that you get in the tub with the cat and close the sliding-glass doors as if you were about to take a shower. A berserk cat can shred a three-ply rubber shower curtain quicker than a politician can shift positions.I recommend canvas overalls tucked into high-top construction boots, a pair of steel-mesh gloves, an army helmet, a hockey face mask and a long-sleeve flak jacket.Draw the water. Pick up your cat nonc...

Cat's First Aid
2008-02-11 23:08:00
Cats Com : In an emergency, keep a level head and quickly get your cat to the veterinarian. Call first. If your doctor's office is not open, call the nearest emergency pet clinic. Keep emergency phone numbers near your telephone. There are some things you can do or avoid doing to help your cat before you get her to the hospital/clinic as soon as possible:Wrap your cat in a heavy towel or blanket to keep her warm and restrict her movements. Apply a pressure bandage (sterile gauze or a clean handkerchief) to stem or stop the bleeding of a cut or bite.Apply a cold compress to a burn and gently hold it there until you get to the veterinary clinic.Do not induce vomiting even if you suspect or know your cat has swallowed a poisonous substance. At any sign of choking (drooling, difficulty swallowing, pawing at the mouth, gagging), do not attempt to remove the item.If your cat suffers heatstroke, take her to a cool spot and sponge her with cold water. Safe Home For Cats
2008-02-11 22:53:00
Cats Com : Even cats that spend most of their time indoors may be exposed to a number of potential hazards. The following list will help keep your home safe and sound for your cat.Be aware of the plants you have in your house and in your yard. The ingestion of a poisonous plant may be fatal. When cleaning your house, never allow your cat access to the area where cleaning agents are used or stored. When using rat or mouse baits, ant or roach traps, or snail and slug baits, place the products in areas that are inaccessible to your cat. Never give your cat any medications unless under the directions of a veterinarian. Giving Pills To Cat
2008-02-11 22:45:00
Cats Com : Giving pills to your cat is easier when you know how. It's hard to deceive a cat because most pills can't be hidden in a bite of cat food. Besides, cats are both curious and suspicious, so they will nose around any new food item.Just put the pill where the cat has to swallow it. Then grasp the teeth of the upper jaw and tilt the head backwards gently. Holding the pill between your thumb and index finger of the other hand, use the other fingers to gently pry the cats mouth open. You can then drop the tablet down the throat. Sometimes you'll need to give it a gentle push. Be sure to talk soothingly to your cat during this process, and reward her when you are finished.Tag : cat care | cat medicine | cat pills

There are references to "white ringtail" cats all during that time. In fact, Turkish-Van-like cats are depicted on jewelry from the ancient Hittite empire. It is designed and bred with the demands of modern apartment life as a human companion foremost in mind.Toyger's are of medium size with a strong and robust torso. Toyger's coats are short, thick, plush, soft and feel extremely luxurious. The ideal colouring for a Toyger is an orange/tan background with dark stripes like that of a Tiger. Tiffanie
2008-02-09 13:11:00
DescriptionTiffanies are so beautiful, and are also called by their breed's other name, Asian Semi-Longhair. True to their breed's name, these cats have hair that is neither very long nor short. They are essentially very much like the Asian Shorthair cat breed, only instead of having short hair, they have medium-long hair. Like the Asian Shorthair and Burmese, they are recognized in any of the typical fur colors and coat patterns of those breeds. Also like the Asian Shorthair, the Tiffanie cat breed was bred in Britain. The breed is less popular in the US and elsewhere.PersonalityPerhaps the most attractive characteristic of the Tiffanie or Asian Semi-Longhair breed is that their wonderful coats are not nearly as hard to groom as for many similar-looking breeds. Other than that, the personality traits of this breed are not much commented on.HistoryThe Tiffanie cat breed was developed in Britain in the mid-1980s. It is also called the Asian Semi-Longhair cat breed. The Semi-Longhair...
Sphynx

The mutation occurred in a single cat...
Somali
2008-02-08 23:25:00
DescriptionThe Somali cat breed is a longhair offshoot of the Abyssinian cat breed.Head: wedge-shaped but slightly rounded,Ears: large, pointed, broadEyes: large; dark-rimmed, as with AbyssiniansBody: medium-longLegs: in proportion to bodyPaws: oval-shaped with five in front and four in backTail: characteristically bushy tailCoat: longhair and traditionally, red or "ruddy" colored; however, other color varieties have also been developed; tabby patterns not allowedPersonalityWhile this may not qualify as a behavior per se, it is worth noting that Somalis are fairly unique in how they shed fur. They shed or "blow" a large amount of fur once or twice a year rather than day by day.HistoryThe origins of the Somali breed are fairly straightforward. Like so many other breeds, the Somali breed is a naturally-occurring offshoot of an existing breed, in this case, the Abyssinian. The Abyssinian is a shorthair breed, yet litters would often have a longhair cat which did not fit the breed stand...

DescriptionThe Singapura is one of the USA's newest breeds of cats, having gotten its start in the 1980s when travelers to Singapore brought the cats over with them and started breeding and showing them. Back in Singapore, many of the cats remained stray street cats.
