2008-03-01 11:51:00 Windward Mall (235-6477)If you haven't figured it out yet, this is one of my favorite pet shops. One of the best in variety of live stock plus supplies. On my latest visit I noticed more aquariums supplies for the Freshwater/Saltwater enthusiast with the small to medium size aquariums on sale. This plus a nice selection of assorted cichlids leads to a good opportunity for those waiting to start their aquarium. As always, a good selection of birds and small animals. Today they had a pair of diamond silver doves available along with their always full stock of parakeets, cockatiels, parrots, conures, finches, and canaries. Kittens were also available, as were guinea pigs and bunnies.Puppies available a Shih Tzu, Fox Terriers, and a pot-bellied pig. Always worth a visit. Pet Fun: Beat-Boxing Bassethound
2008-02-25 15:01:00 Saw this interactive flash program and had to blog about it. You might have seen this on other sites as its getting to be popular. but for those who haven't here is the link: Depending on your internet speed this may take some time to load, but the wait is worth it. I should also state that website is in another language. Although the controls for the hound are easily identified. You even have the option to record your own hound performance and I believe you can email the finished product. I'm not too sure of this last assessment, as I am very reluctant to add peoples emails on foreign sites, because that hound could be the candy coating for something malicious. Therefore I'm content to just play it as it is. make money online More About: Boxing , Beat
Pet Tips: Living With Your Cat
2008-02-23 15:07:00 Found this article on the Healthy Pet website. (Photo by ©iStockphoto.com/mariusFM77)The following is an excerpt from the website: Living With Your Cat, Part 1 Tabby is a trip. She snuggles, she purrs, and then she . . . leaves dead animals on your doorstep. She also coughs up hairballs, chews through wool sweaters, incessantly pulls out her own hair, and will only drink water in very particular ways. Although you might wish you could train Tabby to live in your house, you just might need to adjust to life in Tabby's house. (Read More) Living With Your Cat, Part 2 Can you imagine a nice fluffy Persian or orange tabby cat rolling over, shaking hands, jumping through hoops, or balancing a treat on the end of his nose? If you're living with shredded drapes and fur-covered kitchen counters, the thought may make you laugh. It's conventional wisdom that cats can't be taught new behaviors, that they're pretty much going to do whatever they want. The ... More About: Tips
Pet Tips: Small Ideas for Aquariums
2008-02-23 14:21:00 Found this article on the Aqua Hobby website. (Photo by ©iStockphoto.com/PLAINVIEW)The following is an excerpt from the website: Since the qualifiers Mini-, Micro-, Nano- and Pico- are already being used for "enormous" aquariums with several liters in volume, I had to come up with a new name to categorize these ingenious beauties that two friends from Londrina (Brazil) have been creating. Rony Suzuki and Fabio Yoshida are veteran aquatic gardeners, with heaps of cuttings and talent to keep inventing new setups that are always surprising and inspiring us, but this time they've really outdone themselves...or indone themselves, whatever! Good price too, don't think I can have one though.Shops also carries a nice variety of freshwater fish (some nice discus fish available), a few saltwater fish, a redear slider turtle, Jackson Chameleons, and a few birds. Of which they had pure white and pure yellow parakeets, finches, lovebirds, and canaries.I'm still in my Betta Fish phase for the office, so I ended up picking up a red crown at a very low price. You will not be able to completely stop your cat from clawing and scratching things, but you can control what the cat scratches. Step one is to give your cat an alternative to clawing your furniture. Scratching posts and toys will give the cat an expectable outlet for their natural behavior. A scratching post can be inexpensively built out of a couple pieces of wood nailed together and then covered with carpet. Pet Tips: Marineland Betta Sphere Setup
2008-02-14 10:51:00 An idea for the office, what you'll need:- Marineland Betta Sphere and lamp (Baby Blue)- Gemstone marble flat stones (Translucent/white mix)- (1) Betta fish- Betta food.- Be sure to wash both the sphere and gemstones with mild soap, and rinse thoroughly before setting up.The sphere looks great and really magnifies the image of the fish, allowing you to see the true beauty and personality of your Betta Fish. Yes, they have personality. I found after a few days at work with my fish that I could pass my finger by the sphere and he would puff up, spread its tail in full glory, and try in vain to scare my finger away. Don't worry I always let'em win. I also found that the fish has good eye sight, I don't know if its the shape of the sphere that enhances his view, but the fish will track my finger at a distance, follow, and defend its home if my finger intrudes a certain distance to the sphere. Smaller fish may end up being a night time snack. Otherwise quite peaceful. (Nocturnal)Ghost fish require a minimum tank size of 75 gallons due to their large size of up to 20 inches in length. Small grained substrate is preferred. The aquarium should be densely planted combined with driftwood. Also recommended are some sort of inert piping for the fish to hide in. The plants, pipes, and driftwood will help the fish overcome its shyness as it is nocturnal and sensitive to bright lights. Feeding should be a mix of live tubifex, brine shrimp, meaty frozen foods, and feeder fish. make money online More About: Fish , Knife
Pet Tips: Nitrogen Cycle - The Key to Biological Filtration
2008-02-11 20:41:00 Article provided by Drs. Foster & Smith. Veterinary & Aquatic Services Department, Drs. Foster & Smith, Inc. Understanding the nitrogen cycle is an important part of keeping a successful aquarium. The nitrogen cycle is responsible for the biological filtration within the system. It keeps the water free of toxic compounds that are a result of the respiration of the inhabitants, and the decay of any matter such as waste products and uneaten food. When we understand this cycle, we can anticipate situations that may cause damage to this process, and prevent or avoid these situations that may lead to livestock loss. Figure 1. The nitrogen cycleAdapted from: Mills, D. The Marine Aquarium. Salamander Books LTD.8 Blenhein Ct., Brewery Rd. London N79NT; 1987. Pet Tips: Buying a Chinchilla - Things to Consider
2008-02-09 00:04:00 Article provided by Drs. Foster & Smith. Veterinary & Aquatic Services Department, Drs. Foster & Smith, Inc.Although people think of Chinchillas as cute, incredibly soft, and cuddly, and so of course they would make good pets, that is not always the case. Here are some quick facts to help you decide if this is really the pet of choice for you.Chinchillas are rodents, native to the Andes Mountains in South America. They have strong hind legs and move about by using a hopping gait and are surprisingly good jumpers, hence the need for a cover on a chinchilla cage. Chinchillas are as soft as they are because of the incredible density of their fur, with as many as 60 hairs growing from only one hair follicle. Because of the hair density, they are highly susceptible to overheating and become uncomfortable in temperatures above 75ºF, suffering potential heat stroke at temperatures above 80º.They also do not tolerate humidity. The best environment is temperatures between 50-65º ... More About: Buying , Tips , Things

Pet Tips: How Pet Food Is Made
2008-02-07 18:56:00 Found this article on the Veterinary News Network. (Photo by ©iStockphoto.com/lisegagne)The following is an excerpt from the website:"Recent events have many people questioning what goes into their pets' diets and what kind of safeguards the pet food manufacturers have in place. With more than 15,000 brands of pet foods available, owners are often confused about which diet might be best for their dog or cat. With the help of your veterinarian, choosing the ideal food doesn't have to be so complex. Because of these massive recalls, the pet food industry will be forever changed. Much more scrutiny and care will be given to supply chains, testing and quality control - even in an industry that for the most part has done an amazing job at all this for decades. For now, be vigilant now and watch the news. We predict pet foods will improve even further and the companies that make them will work hard to re-gain your trust and re-build their image. Pet Tips: Salmonellosis and Its Risk to Reptile Owners
2008-02-01 21:09:00 Article provided by Drs. Foster & Smith. Veterinary & Aquatic Services Department, Drs. Foster & Smith, Inc. If you ask the average lay person if there are any risks in owning a pet turtle or other reptile, the one that is most commonly mentioned is Salmonella bacteria. Most, if not all, reptiles carry Salmonella in their intestinal tract and intermittently or continuously shed these bacteria in their feces. Studies have shown that 85% of all turtles, 77% of lizards, and 92% of snakes carry one of the 500 serotypes of Salmonella. Salmonella usually do not cause any illness in reptiles, but can cause serious illness in people. Salmonella bacteria are easily spread from reptiles to humans. For Salmonella to spread from reptiles to humans, the bacteria must be ingested. This most often occurs when humans place their hands on the reptile or objects that have been in contact with the stool of reptiles; then they place their hands in their mouths, or ...
