A Miserable Christmas for KC?

After a prolonged absence (perhaps he was on holiday), KC made a brief appearance yesterday. He gently loped across the field in pursuit of what appeared to be a pigeon. Sadly for KC, the bird spotted him and flew, unhurriedly, into a tree.If that's all the effort KC can muster for lunch, he's in for a pretty miserable - not to mention very hungry - Christmas .

Three Against One Isn't Fair

For the first time in ages KC put in an appearance today - stalking three pheasants in the field. Alas, KC soon disappeared from sight. Perhaps he didn't fancy the odds!!

KC Launches Aerial Attack

For the first time in ages Killer Cat came into my garden yesterday and sat staring into the undergrowth. Suddenly, his ears pricked up, his body twitched and he stood up on his two rear legs as if he was trying to pinpoint his prey. After a few seconds, he relaxed again - but not for long! He was soon on his hind legs and with body twitching as if he were about to pounce he again stared at the undergrowth. Not content with his efforts at trying to satisfy his curiosity, and totally unaware of my presence and the comical sight he presented he suddenly leapt gracefully into the undergrowth. For a few moments everything was still - not a movement, nor a sound. Then he emerged from the undergrowth licking his lips and looking as pleased as Punch. Clearly he had enjoyed his quick snack. But what was his snack? Perhaps a bird...maybe just a grasshopper which was too slow off the mark to avoid that graceful aerial attack. One thing is for certain - KC's prey was not a rabbit. ...

He's Still Around

Despite the absence of posts in this blog for the last month, KC is still around. He has been in my garden two or three times. He quite clearly thinks he owns the place as he no longer beats a hasty retreat when I approach. KC does seem to be taking a lazy attitude to the rabbits which continue to abound in the area. I am sure that he could quite easily catch some of the recently born bunnykins but he seems to lack the inclination to do so! Could it be that he's mellowed? Or has he just become SKC (Scaredy Killer Cat)?

Still Around

I've seen KC a couple of times during the past few days - just minding his own business and treating my garden as if it were his territory (which, to him, it is!). Not a rabbit in sight on either occasion - funny how they all seem to creep out of the woodwork (sorry, hedgerows) when KC is not around. Oh for that photo of KC stalking or actually catching a rabbit!

Did The Cat Play While The Man Was Away?

Quite possibly!You may well wonder why there has been little activity on this blog during the past month. The answer is quite simple - I've been away on holiday. Whether or not KC put in any appearances during my absence, we will never know. But I am back and on the look out - so KC had better look out too!No sign of him today, though. I am sure that KC, like most other felines, has a distinct dislike for water and probably stayed indoors to avoid today's rain. With the prospect of bad weather continuing until next month, I wonder how long we will have to wait before he shows his nose.

Cattitude!

He sauntered into my garden this morning without a care in the world. A rabbit which had been quietly basking in the sun disappeared without trace, though in the absence of fur on the grass I suppose it escaped safely. Yes, Killer Cat is back again!As he made his way slowly through my garden, KC caught sight of me looking at him. He gave me a long withering look then, nose held high, continued his stroll. He paused again to look back at me. If looks could kill, I'd have been stone dead. This cat really has got an attitude! After all, it's my garden and not his.

Dear Deer

Crows took to the air with much cawing and rabbits bolted for their burrows or other places of safety without a murmur. Thus was the scene in the field to the north of Abbey Lane at about 12.30 p.m. today. At first, I thought KC had put in an appearance. No such luck. The unusal cause of such fright was a deer gently loping across the field. We rarely get deer in this part of Coggeshall so it was good to see this one enjoying himself today. Good job KC wasn't around. He'd have definitely met his match with that one!

Yet Another Cat

'Tis a beautiful Easter Sunday in Coggeshall and as I looked out of my window this morning I espied a cat! At first sight, it appeared to be KC but, on closer inspection, turned out to be a cat I'd never seen before. This pure black cat stared at me fiercely before moving off. Just long enough for me to notice that it was holding it's head at an odd angle to the rest of it's body. But it didn't seem to be in pain so I just left it to its own devices. Look out rabbits and pheasants - another predator is in the neighbourhood. Look out Killer Cat - it looks as though you may have competition for the local wildlife!

Despite the beautiful weather we have experienced over the past few days KC has, once again, been conspicuous by his absence. Even the rabbit population seems to have diminished a bit - perhaps KC got them during the night! The watch continues.....

Strange Puddytat!

He put in another appearance in a field off Abbey Lane shortly before midday today. The sun was shining brightly, and the sky was bright blue as Killer Cat slowly ambled across the field. Nearby, about five feet to be precise, a large black crow regarded KC with deep suspicion - though not enough to prevent him from closing the gap to about three feet! Suddenly, the crow flapped his wings, embraced flight briefly and landed about five feet further away. Seemingly oblivious of this brief bout of activity, KC looked at the crow and continued to slowly plod southwards.Meanwhile, a rabbit sat, nose twitching, about ten feet away. KC, nose in the air, briefly glanced at the rabbit and continued to amble southwards. The rabbit appeared quite startled to have survived this brief encounter and turned round to stare at KC as he plodded on regardless.An amazing sight given KC's history - and certainly not the action of a the Killer Cat I've come to know. Another Sighting!

.....and within just a couple of minutes of being snapped today, KC shot through a hedge and into an a field. In the absence of fur flying and hissing and spitting, and seeing a rabbit minding it's own business in the field, I can only assume that something, or somebody spooked KC, rather than him having launched an attack. What's up KC? Scared of your own shadow today?

Fair Weather Cat

3 degrees C, rain, sleet, hail and snow - that's what Coggeshall has to offer today!Not surprising then that there is little wildlife around. Just a few rooks and magpies, pigeons, wet rabbits and and an even more bedraggled pheasant is all I've seen so far today. Can't see the fair weather Killer Cat putting in an appearance today in these circumstances.

Stop Press - He's Back! And He's Not Alone!

Yes! At 10.40 this morning my patience was rewarded as Killer Cat put in an appearance in a field off Abbey Lane. Better still, he was accompanied by the smoky coloured cat with spots that I mentioned in this blog on 19 February. I think I'll call that one Leopard Cat.I spent several minutes watching both cats as they sauntered through the field without a care in the world. Leopard Cat led the way, closely followed by an apparently uncertain Killer Cat who kept shaking a front paw as if he'd stood on something prickly. Unfortunately, I then lost sight of Killer Cat but after a few minutes Leopard Cat forced his way through my hedge and into the garden.I immediately grabbed my camera and threw open the window. As I did so, Leopard Cat gave me a long withering look - almost as if he thought I was a piece of dirt. Of course, it might just have been that he didn't like the sound of Ray Clark (standing in for Dave Monk) from BBC Essex which was playing rather loudly on my radio. Whate...

You Could Be Forgiven.....

.....for thinking that this blog is going way off beam and concentrating more on Coggeshall wildlife in general than the feline creature to which it is dedicated. But in the continuing absence of KC what else can I do apart from regularly show that I am on the lookout for him.A beautiful morning (and part of the afternoon) in Coggeshall today. Once again, the two black dogs were enjoying themselves running around in the field to the north of Abbey Lane. This time they were accompanied by their owner. Meanwhile, the rest of the local wildlife seems to think Spring has sprung - and perhaps they are right. Wood pigeons, thrushes and blackbirds have been busy gathering nesting material and disappearing into my hedge - only to reappear with empty mouths. The rooks also seem to have been busy building their nests in the trees nearby. Meanwhile, rabbits basked in the sunshine and four (yes, four) magpies were also perched on top of my hedge. Dogs Keeping Him Away?

No surprises for guessing that KC has still not put in an appearance. The weather over the past few days has certainly been bad enough to keep him away. Perhaps I scared the living daylights out of him when I said "Shoo" to him on 1 February. Surely a cat which fearlessly takes on rabbits would not be afraid of a mere mortal saying "Shoo!"I noticed this morning that there were two black dogs in King's Field to the north of Abbey Lane. The dogs, which I think are labradors, are frequently to be found running around there - sometimes with their owner. This particular field has also attracted KC in the past - not to mention a few kite flyers. Come to think of it, the kite flyers have been as elusive as KC - odd considering the high winds we've had recently. Perhaps they've all been blown away!

I thought I'd give it a few days before posting here again - in the hope that KC might show up. Alas, he is still very much AWOL. Could it really be that he's deliberately staying away to annoy me? He Won't Come Out Today!

There's not a hope of KC putting in an appearance today as it's pouring with rain. No prospect of an improvement in the weather, either. All other wildlife seems to have taken cover, too. Not a sign of a rabbit in the fields off Abbey Lane. Apart from a few birds which have taken to the air, the only sign of wildlife I've seen so far was a drenched pheasant taking cover under a shrub in my garden.Looks like KC is a fair weather hunter. Wonder how long we'll have to wait for him to show his face.

Is It Worth It?

Surprise, surprise! KC continues to remain out of sight. It could be something to do with the fact that, spring apparently having arrived, more dogs are taking their owners for a walk and he's too scared to show his face. Or is it just that he's got wind of this blog and is just being contrary to make a fool out of me. Meanwhile, rabbits abound and will undoubtedly be thinking of breeding. The number of birds also appears to be on the increase. Surely KC doesn't really wish to miss out on these opportunities.Whatever the cause of his absence (perhaps he's moved away to some urban location), it does make you wonder whether or not it's worth while continuing this Mog Blog on a regular basis. Come on KC! Show your face - I need a photo of you with a rabbit to post here - just to convince the blog followers that you really exist!

Naughty Ducks

No sign of KC yesterday, or of the other cat! Indeed, apart from the odd rabbit and bird, the only other sign of wildlife I saw was two ducks trying to mate in the middle of the road at the junction of Bridge Street and The Gravel just before 9.00 a.m. Fortunately for the ducks, the driver of a blue van coming from the direction of Kelvedon managed to stop before flattening them. Amidst the sound of a tooting horn and much quacking, the ducks quickly abandoned their amorous activities and moved to the side of the road. They didn't seem very happy at being rudely interrupted, though!

Another Cat

Spotted a beautiful cat in Abbey Lane this morning. Judging by its coat - a light smoky colour with darker spots on its body - it appears that it may be a cross between a Siamese and a Tabby.The cat was creeping around as if it was stalking wildlife but I couldn't see exactly what it had its eyes on. Quite probably the rabbits. Also spotted a noisy pheasant in one of the fields adjacent to Abbey Lane.Alas, there is still no sign of KC. He's clearly missing out on the stalking opportunities, and now it looks as though he may have some competition!

A Dead Rabbit

Spotted a dead rabbit in Abbey Lane early this morning. Nothing to suggest that KC was responsible, though. The rabbit could just as easily have been killed by a vehicle. Meanwhile, KC continues to be elusive (what a surprise!).

I was in Abbey Lane early this afternoon and noticed a dark coloured animal shoot across the lane. I was not close enough to make a positive ID, but this was definitely not a rabbit but. It might well have been KC. By the time I reached the spot where the animal had crossed the lane, it had disappeared without trace.

Wildlife Abounds!

Heavy rain this morning has undoubtedly put KC off venturing out into the wider world once again. You must be wondering whether this cat really exists and I don't blame you for that. The weather in Coggeshall picked up this afternoon and it was lovely to see a beautiful white swan and ducks swimming on the River Blackwater close to the bridge. Pheasants strut the fields in Abbey Lane, and rabbits and birds abound in my garden - including, unfortunately, a pigeon (I went off them a few years back when one snatched a baby blackbird from a nest in my hedge).I really can't imagine that KC would miss the opportunity to stalk these creatures. Perhaps he's really a coward and doesn't fancy his chances when outnumbered.

Cat Free Weekend

With rain for most of the weekend it's not really surprising that KC has continued to be conspicuous by his absence. With little prospect of an improvement in the weather over the next few days this situation seems unlikely to improve.Meanwhile, the birds are feeding in my garden and the rabbits are treating it as their own territory. I wonder how much longer KC will allow them to get away with this. Or is it simply the case that KC has decided to embarrass me by failing to put in any appearances since I started this blog?

Took a walk this morning along Grange Hill and Abbey Lane in the hope that KC might show himself. Unfortunately, it appears that today's temperature of 4C is keeping him inside. Perhaps he'll emerge in Spring.A short while ago I caught sight of a dark shape moving through the hedge. Alas, not KC, but just a magpie taking a quick stroll. Oh, well.........!

With over two inches of snow on the ground today, it's hardly surprising that there has been no sign of KC. He does exist, honestly. The only visible tracks in my garden are those of birds and my size 9s. If KC had ventured out he would have found several rabbits huddling in the cold. Another missed opportunity, KC!!

Elusive Puddytat Keeping Warm??

No sign of KC as yet - a little odd considering he usually likes to sniff at our rubbish bag on Mondays. Come to think of it, there don't seem to be too many rabbits around today, either, but I don't think there's anything sinister in that. It's been pretty cold today and with the threat of a widespread frost overnight, with temperatures down to -6C, I should think KC's staying in the warm. He would do if he had any sense.But I've still got this strong feeling that he's nearby. He's probably heard about this blog and my intention of getting some photos and has decided to lie low for a while - undoubtedly in the warmth of his own home. After all, if the rabbits are keeping out of the cold, what's the point in looking for them when you can snuggle down on your favourite cushion in a nice cosy room. Come on KC, don't be a spoilsport. Come out, come out, wherever you are and have your picture taken for the world to see! Or are you scared of being positively ID'd?
