Weird Past Photos
2008-02-11 19:07:00
Ok, The Transylvanian Horseman has tagged me for a weird photos of the past game. Only problem I have many weird photos to share and unfortunately for all of you, I can't just stop at one. So here's the first, 19 years ago with my sister and little Zoe only one month old. My sister is wearing the hat. I'm the one with the mane. We were in Florida at my sister's home visiting and Zoe was about one month old. I was in nursing school at the time, but taking a reprieve after having given birth. Here I am having afternoon tea at The Ritz in London, England with my husband on one of the dates he took me on when I went there to visit him in November of 2000. Very lady like. I wasn't allowed to wear my boots!Me, also in November of 2000, in the New Forest area of England, feeding a wild New Forest Pony. I made Steve stop at a small grocier in the area for a bag of carrots so that I could get out and feed them. Of course it did end in disaster as wild ponies tend to get pissed when one ...

A Boot For Every Occassion
2008-02-11 17:10:00
I remember saying that I had a boot for every occasion. And here they are, but there are a few more that I'd like to add to my boot collection in which YES! I do wear all of these at one time or another. I've got muck boots, riding boots, dressy boots, snow boots, blue jean boots, Black boots, every day boots. Some are Fryes, Justin, Laredo, Dan Post...... And guess what I want for my birthday......... I want a new pair of Justin's like those over at Mud Ranch . I found them on line and printed several copies off for Steve. I live in my boots. Even wear them to work, as a nurse, the pink rubber soled Justins. It's great working weekends. Nobody notices. And they're comfortable on a 12 hour shift. I love my boots! All bazillion of them. Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.ht ml for more horse stories, information and resources.

Kola Sleeping in The Snow!
2008-02-11 14:32:00
I said that I would post this the other day and so I did today. I just happened to catch Kola sleeping in the new snow. I thought it was funny. She's fighting it, but then the Sandman catches her. She's the only one I catch laying down to sleep. I have caught Misty only once in all of these years and the other day Misty was refusing it as I watched her falling asleep standing up. Steve has caught Misty laying down to sleep, but I really have not seen it. Kola always lays to sleep. Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.ht ml for more horse stories, information and resources.

Freezing!
2008-02-10 17:07:00
Once again it's below "0" here and we've thrown a bit extra hay to the girls and the goats. Of course it snowed again last night a couple of inches on top of the 14 inches or so that we got a few days ago and the northern frigid hefty winds are blowing and the snow is drifting. So travel home from work this morning was treacherous as the freeway was just ice. At one point, the fastest I could go without sliding was 30 miles per hour. I counted 8 fresh dillholes sitting in the ditches on my way home. And to top it off when I finally did arrive home there is a rogue sparrow that has some how gotten into the house so now it becomes a battle with Steve and I armed with a net pitted against 6 cats and 2 dogs as to who will catch said bird first. This is usually a 30 minute process as I've said this is a converted barn and there's lots of room and height to fly! And the other topping on the cake is I've already had my IM (shot) for my Multiple Sclerosis which makes me ill with flu-li...

Spread The Love Award
2008-02-08 20:20:00
I just received this lovely award from my new friend at Grey Horse Matters And I too would like to thank her for this award. It's very nice to be remembered as often we are too busy in our lives for others. I feel a deep connection with my fellow bloggers, although most of us have not met in person, we share a common connection and respect with our horses and interests. This was created by Mica at Garb-oodles Soup with an idea to "Spread The Love " in amongst those we meet through the blogoshere and find that connection. So I will pass this along to Mikael at Rising Rainbows Arabians who writes superb posts about her life raising her dream Arabian Horses. And to Sarah at Scary's West who gives insights into life out west, especially in Montana, running ranches, training horses and more recently cross country skiing. To Strawberry Lane who shares her life with us out in California with Alpacas, her horse, Mouse Trap and many other creatures her and her Hollywood Hubs care for.And finall...

New Widget Towards End Of Page
2008-02-07 13:55:00
I created a widget for Callie at the bottom on the right of the page after she was telling me one night she likes to go out each day and check the other blogs on her list and make comments, but sometimes she would spend two hours checking them out to find all her blogging friends had been busy and not posted. So I created the little widget that gives the latest 10 updated posts .I used her blogroll as the starting point and found another 20 plus sites that I thought would be useful. Please let me know of any good horse sites with RSS feeds blogs I have missed out and what you think of it.You can find the full list of sites included at The Power Guide for HorsesI think one of the reasons I like it is because I can include blogs that do not post very often due to other commitments but you can still tell when they create a new postStevePlease visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.ht ml for more horse stories, information and resources.

What's Your Dream Barn?
2008-02-06 19:50:00
I'd like a small barn, maybe 6 stalls at most, a tack room, and an office area or place to just hang out. I like this one in the picture as I like the stall to turn out area. The only thing this is missing is the indoor riding arena. I'd want water available indoors and it would have to be heated. But with plenty of ventolation and light. A hay storage room would be nice too. I like this one too, only there would be fence all around with gates to different turn out areas. Storage on right, stalls on left with aisles in both and center riding arena. That would be cool. Quite frankly, at this point I'd be happy with a small barn and an adjacent riding arena. Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.ht ml for more horse stories, information and resources.

18 Inches of Snow By Tonight
2008-02-06 16:55:00
The calm before the storm. The neighbor's just down the road yesterday morning when Steve and I went out to start our errands before the storm hit. This is an organic farm, more like a compound that started with only one new house and now has a total of three new houses, several barns and multitudes of chickens and calves, horses, goats and dogs. Here is the start of the snow storm yesterday afternoon at about 4pm shortly after we got home from our errands and I fed the girls. I shoveled about 8 inches of snow this morning when I went out to feed. And the reports are for another 8 inches by 6pm tonight. My shoveling efforts are futile with snowfall rates of 2-3 inches per hour. We are hunkered down today and the silly girls are too freaked out to stay in the shelter today inspite of my efforts to feed them in there this morning. Thank God for four wheel drive in a pick-up truck because I may want to get out later. Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.ht ml for more ho...

My Bucket List
2008-02-06 02:29:00
One Cowgirl has tagged me for a bucket list..........This is a hard one for me because I don't have any life regrets and I've been lucky enough to experience alot that others may have not, so I thought hard about this and it may seem weak, but here it goes...........1) I would like to purchase five more acres of land adjacent to us from my farmer neighbor and surround it with decent white fence and build my dream barn for the horses.2) I would some day like to return to England with my husband and go explore the areas of Cornwall and Devon. One place I haven't visited with him yet.3) I've been out west, but it's been decades since I've been there and I would like to take my husband on a road trip west way through the Dakotas, Montana, Utah and Wyoming.4) I'd like to finish the remodeling of this house, mainly our kitchen and master bedroom.5) I'd like to take up wild life photography with my husband and travel around with a real good camera. So there's my bucket list. I've Been Tagged-Horse MeMe
2008-02-04 16:01:00
Ok, I've been tagged again, but only this time it's a horse meme. Mikael has tagged me this time and I think it's a good idea!1) Dakota, was my first horse and a bit much for me, but he had some funny quirks. Whenever, I was out cleaning troughs or fixing fences, he would steal my hairties from my head and pitch them aside. Or poke me in the butt with his nose.2) It took Misty a long time to warm up to me, years, and now she thinks that I am exclusive to her. She is much smaller than Kola, but most dominant.3) Kola is an extravert, and gets silly when I come out to feed. She always talks alot and will buck and sometimes rear if I'm not fast enough.4) My husband thinks that Misty looks retarded........like she says, "duh". I, of course, know better. She's just intraverted.5) Kola is loyal.......Is always the first to show up at the fence and check my pockets for any treats I may have brought, but when the halter goes on, understands that it's all business.6) Misty is smarter th...

Time Well Spent
2008-02-01 01:46:00
I really enjoy spending time with my horses. It keeps me grounded. I love their company, their smell, their personalities and the differences in them. It's daily, the time well spent. Even when I have to work and my husband feeds them in the morning and evening, I still take the time to talk to them when I get home from work in the morning and sometimes give them a treat. They appreciate the time I spend with them. I know they do. I know that in how they spend their time with me. I know that by the nuzzles I receive. The fact that when I'm out there with them, they come to me and drop their heads and let me touch them. I talk to them constantly, touch them, wrap my arms around their necks, kiss their noses, feed them, groom them, pick their feet, clean their space, staighten their blankets. We exercise and they let me ride them. I look forward to the warm days again so that I may spend even more time with them. I look forward to an afternoon spent laying in the pasture with them.P...

Looking Forward To Spring
2008-01-31 16:06:00
I'm missing the green so bad right now and really looking forward to Spring . I love the smell of Spring. New buds on the trees, sprouting little leaves and our Daffodils popping up. I've got a long list of to-do's this year............ I must cut a bunch of branches of the boxelder trees that line our property. Weed the flower gardens and trim back the rose bushes.Remove our old swimming pool that a Spring storm took out last year.Obviously, do some more mucking and re-seed the pasture.I'm sure there will be fence repair and I'll have one trough to replace.Clean out the garage as it has turned into a "pit" once again. And the usual as mowing the lawn is one of my favorite things to do.And spread more mulch about. I can't wait and as I am now on a regular schedule, I plan to devote one day a week to riding, even if it's in the training pen. I'm devoting one day a week to ground work with the girls as well to get them into shape and me. I look forward to opening up the window...

Manure Removal Day!
2008-01-29 19:48:00
As you can see from yesterday's picture, I had a fair amount of horse manure to shovel today. And since the wind stopped and it was still 45 degrees out, I thought I'd better get to it as tonight the winds pick up to 50 miles and hour gusts, the temp drops drastically with another 3 inches of snow tonight and the temp to below zero by morning. It's been cold all week and yesterday, even though it was warm, it was very windy. So I took out 4 large wheel barrows of crap and spread on the neighbor's field and topped off the water before the hose froze. My goal was to get half done at least and I managed to get it all out of the loafing shed. It's fairly easy as I have rubber mats layed out. It's impossible to clear it out of the paddock area until spring as although the stuff on top may have thawed and the snow melted, there is still frozen ground. I hate this time of year because of it. I usually rent a bobcat in the spring and clear it good. The nice about only having two is th...

Another Seven
2008-01-28 14:53:00
This will be another 7 weird random facts........But only these will be about one of the other contributors to this blog and that is my husband, Steve aka "The People History"............1) He once dove 85 feet into the ocean off the back of a ship to impress the girls and swam to the nearest concrete post that the ship was tied to only to find that he was surrounded by sharks and then needed to be rescued..........He may have been fired from that ship.2) He hates the size of his feet........I don't.....wink, wink, nudge, nudge,.......know what I mean?3) He has named some of the wild birds that visit his feeder as he loves his birds......example....the cardinals are Mr. and Mrs. Special, the bluejays are Mr. and Mrs. Angry.4) He has created the very image of himself in his son. They are like two peas in a pod......Eerie!5) He lives on the British and disgusting creation of Marmite on bread and instant coffee.6) He doesn't like the smell of horses........hmmmmph!7) He has very good...

I'm only doing this to humor Callie.1. I cry at sappy, sad dog food commercials.2. I still have clothes from high school that I wear, (I graduated in 1980).3. Def Leppard is my favorite band, (so cowgirl)4. I'm on my third 1991 Camaro.5. I haven't changed my hairstyle since high school, (except the touch of gray).6. I know how to polka, (basicall grew up in Wisconsin).7. I helped put a blow up sheep on the hood of a guy's car while he was at church, bah. Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.ht ml for more horse stories, information and resources.

Ok, I've Been Tagged......3 Times!
2008-01-28 01:17:00
I've been tagged, serves me right for complaining last summer about not getting tagged. Mud Ranch tagged me first. So once again, here are the rules.......The rules of the game are this–Once you are tagged, link back to the person who tagged you.Post the rules on your blog.Post 7 random or weird facts about yourself on your blog.Tag 7 people and link to them.Comment on their blog to let them know they have been tagged.1) I, also like Joan at Mud Ranch, love to harass my cats. And they too love me for it. I thought I was the only one in the world who does that.2) I belch alot and loudly and usually incorporate the word, "bullocks" into it. It's too long a story to elaborate. "Excuse me"3) I have a bit of a twisted and potty sense of humor, which is why I think that it's a bit funny and ironic that even though I was crushed that my sister had passed away in Kansas, I carried her in a box in the trunk of a Ford Focus down to Florida for our service for her passing that her former ...

Feed Me!
2008-01-27 03:28:00
This is my friend Sue's colt. He is really friendly and is always hamming it up for the camera. He is really smart too. He insists on being the first one to get petted and fed. Babies are so much fun! Then they grow up and you have to train them. It's okay for the people that train their own, like she does. Too many people watch a series of tapes and think they are capable of doing it. So many of the unwanted horses are the results of owners not being able to handle the horse. You can get babies cheap and people are giving away horses that are not broke. People do not understand that it takes 60 to 120 days if not longer to have a horse trained, it depends on your abilities. The average trainer in our area gets $550 to $750 a month to train one. That is a lot of money to put in a "free" horse. When you buy a baby, you feed it for a year to year and a half before you can have it trained. Add in the vet care and farrier and you have so much money invested before you can even ride it...

Connected
2008-01-24 04:00:00
Have you ever had a horse so connected with you that she or he acts jealous of others. Not people, but other horses or animals. I lovingly refer to Misty as "my pissed off little pony". I bring this up, because today I spent a little extra time with the girls as I needed to top the water off in their trough and it wasn't so bone chilling cold that I spent the extra time with them, clearing winter eye boogers and removing their halters again and clearly my previous post made all a bit uneasy.{{Sorry}}. I removed Misty's first and as I turned to remove Kola's, Misty reached around to bite at Kola. A behavior I disapprove of while I'm in there and standing in between them. I quickly corrected Misty and she stepped aside. I then turned my attention back to her when I was finished with Kola and she tried to give me the cold shoulder. I softly talked to her and she lowered her head and let me close. I try to give equal time to both, scratches and a little massage. As I left the pen, F...

We Love Our Horses, Right?
2008-01-23 18:05:00
I'm going to start this post with a question to all those who have horses. What is it that you do with your horses? Do you ride or drive? Follow a sport? Just answer this question to yourself first. I ride mine. Trail ride when I get the chance. Not as often as I would like, but I enjoy this. I think my horses enjoy this as well. They receive good care and are well fed. They get their bi-annual vaccinations, wormed, farrier, exercise and just time to be horses in the pasture. I think for most of us it is the same. Now, I'm about to open up the sore subject with most of us and we hold varying opinions about this matter, but, it's still out there and has not gone away. Recently I read a brilliant post by Juli Thorson. If any of you, like me, read Horse and Rider, you'll at least know her name. She also has a blog (link to the right) Some Things I See Coming . This post included a prediction of what is to come to the horse industry........The first link below is an article from the ...

Does This Make Me Look Fat?
2008-01-22 16:28:00
I had to laugh...........The other day I ordered up another 50 bales of hay and Bill, my hay farmer had delivered. Usually we're out doing something when they deliver and this time was no different. We were actually going to Chicago bringing Zoe to the airport to head back to University when Bill and his helpers delivered our hay. When I got home, I found a message on the answering machine and it went like this......." Ahhh, Callie and Steve, this is Bill. I didn't bring you the 50/50 mix. It's more like a 60/40 or 70/30........Ahhhh, you might want to cut back a little on your goats. I see they waste alot and I think they're a little fat. I probably shouldn't be tellin' ya that, cuz it could be counter productive to my business, but, yeah....they're pretty fat."OMG! I laughed so hard......Now Bill, is one of those serious farmers, the kind that you can raise a little chuckle from every now and then, but generally real serious.......Oh we laughed. I realize it's all truth. H...
