An Update On Little Ronnie
2007-11-26 16:29:00
Jess tell me Ronnie is doing well. The swelling keeps moving down and will probably abscess out the bottom of her foot. But she's playing and eating and doing real well. And Jess just loves her. I've just ordered more hay and I'm off today to get some grain for the girls and the goats. I've left my "brain" at work, That would be my daily planner. So later, I'll have to make the trip to Milwaukee to get it. Can't live without the daily planner. But first, a long warm bath! Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.ht ml for more horse stories, information and resources.

I'm Being Stalked!
2007-11-23 17:40:00
Everyday, twice a day these felines follow me until I feed them. This is only a few of the dozen plus cats. I had one momma dropped off and I had taken in 2 kittens that ended up pregnant at 7 months. They weren't big enough to get fixed yet. Usually the kittens will wonder off or accidents happen, Not Here. We had one get stepped on by a horse, the rest follow me everyday. It has gotten to the point that some wait at the end of the driveway when I get home and race the car to the house. No one will take them because they are too big now. I guess the good thing is they all seem to be males, the mommas moved on. I have to admit, you rarely see a mouse! Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.ht ml for more horse stories, information and resources.
The World Is Ending!
2007-11-21 15:25:00
OMG! You'd thought I ended horse life as we all know it. It's suppose to start rain and sleet and turn to snow today into tomorrow and I thought this morning I would close the gate to the pasture and keep the girls in the paddock and near the shelter, mind you, also open to the training pen with plenty of room to get around. I did while they were eating. Now the gate to the pasture is electric ribbon, three of them and when they were done with their grain and went to the hay feeder, of course because it was unfamiliar today, Misty freaked and started running around, well if Misty is running around then something must ready to eat us, so Kola then began and so the chain of me telling them to "Quit!" and them doing sliding stops into the corners of the fence had begun. Kola slid into her feeder and knocked it down. I was able to stand in front of them as they were headed back towards the opened gate to the training pen and shout "Quit!" and they settled as I redirected them to their...

This is my $10 dollar baby. She was a late June baby and is much smaller then my other weanlings. The swelling has actually gone down a little bit. The actual puncture was up by the red where it meets the white. She has developed a lump where it may finally drain. She has been really good considering she was taken from her Mom, ran on a trailer and taken to a sale with strangers all around. She hadn't even been haltered yet. That is pretty typical around here. She was very quick to learn to lead and is really getting friendly. She is pretty tough, she put my biggest alpha colt in line. After she was done with him he was trying to make friends with her. I just love her. Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.ht ml for more horse stories, information and resources.
Playin' Possum
2007-11-16 01:30:00
Well, the other night while I was already in my pajamas and slippers, my husband had taken the dogs out after dark for their late evening before bedtime "potty". He came flying in the door with two of the three dogs and stated that I had better come quick as there was a dead animal in our back garden up against the fence and Spot, the border collie had dragged it for some feet by it's *ss. So I grabbed a coat and a flashlight and back out we went. As I shined the light towards the whitish creature, the reflection of eyes moving along the fence line in a westerly direction was what I saw. My British husband who doesn't have much experience with wild creatures in the States, swore to me that it dead and stiff as he had kicked at it in his slippers! OMG! Fido immediately went for it as I was screaming at Steve to get his dog. It, of course, "dropped dead" in it's tracks, leaving it's mouth partially open showing just exactly how sharp it's teeth are. Steve managed to get the dog i...

Ten Dollars
2007-11-08 19:25:00
Well, I think I did it now. My wonderful boyfriend bought me a cute little filly with a puffy ankle for me to give a little t.l.c. to. It has come on gradually, my big tuff cowboy is showing more and more of his softer side. Of course I had to stay up until after ten o'clock so that I could see her. She will be my all around horse. I haven't seen her papers yet, she needs to be registered and transferred (that's $40). I'm not going to breed her, I'm only breeding 2 out of my 4 mares next year. I stay out of the Sale Barns for that very reason. People are paying to give their horses away. She sold for ten dollars and it cost the seller the minimum 25 dollar fee to sell her. So it cost fifteen dollars plus gas to give her away. What will it be like this winter? Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.ht ml for more horse stories, information and resources.

Thankfulness
2007-11-08 15:18:00
Why are horses a part of my life? I think that most of us who really must have horses in our lives are actually born to do so. It's something that grabs you as a child and never goes away. Almost an obsessive need. My horses are those that entertain me, listen to me after a hard nights work, ask nothing of me but to make sure they are fed and cared for, even though I ask of them. They are spiritual. A very calming influence on me. A kind eye. A warm nuzzle. There is nothing like the feeling of trust between human and horse. They trust me to care for and protect them and I the same. A majestic creature that symbolizes freedom and spirit. Best friends. Beautiful to look at. My mares, one a silent and solid introvert and one a talkative and colorful extrovert. A perfect balance. I am thankful for all equines. Even those that are not mine. Thankful for the time they give me. Thankful for what they have taught me. Thankful for their beauty. Thankful for the inner peace they give me.Plea...

Well, Steve and I just got in yesterday from a trip to Georgetown, KY, which is just fifteen minutes north of Lexington. When you fly into Lexington, it is amazing, not a square foot of land below that doesn't have a horse on it. Pretty wild. We had some time to take a drive and went to the Kentucky National Horse Park, however, there was a Republican convention being held there and we were shuffled out, but I did manage to get some pics. We were actually there with our daughter, Zoe, to look at Georgetown College before she transfers there in January. The pic with the white fence is part of the Kentucky Horse Park. It stretches for miles and miles. Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.ht ml for more horse stories, information and resources.

I received this via e-mail from my horse club and it refers to the accident with the double decker. You'll find it interesting and sad. This moving, eyewitness account of the Oct. 27 horse trailer accident in Wadsworth, Ill., was written by Deanna Hertrich, a board member of the Illinois Dressage and Combined Training Association:What did you do Saturday night?October 27th, 2007. It had been a great Saturday. Perfect Midwest Fall weather and a day full of accomplishments. I had been able to ride three horses on the farm, one being my two and a half year old Boo for the fourth time of his life, followed by my twenty year old event horse, given a light day of dressage still feeling very good after a full season of shows. I consider myself and my family “horsy”. We own a small horse farm; of which I am the full time staff. I compete in combined training as well as dressage. Kevin, my partner, is also very active; not only a DVM practicing with Bristol Veterinary Service (must ment...

Damn That Smarts!
2007-11-02 02:36:00
Horse teeth hurt when they come in contact with human fingers. Yesterday, Jeremiah came in the morning to trim and I needed to rally the girls into the training pen. And they had their breakfast long ago, so I thought well one flake of hay will just bring them in to the training pen easier, so I wouldn't have to go out into the pasture and halter them. Just me takin' a short cut, not that either of them are difficult. SO as I brought the flake in, Kola, thought that Christmas had come early and attempted to grab the hay inspite of me trying to back her off, which usually she listens very well, but I was determined on putting this flake way to the back of the pen where the ground had a little grass and less dust, and I'm sure this confused her, so she managed to snatch a bit of hay which also included my knuckle! I was also carrying two halters and a lead rope, of which I used to smack her with. She then ran out of the pen toward Misty who hadn't figured it out yet, but, of cours...

It's Started
2007-10-29 18:18:00
I just read the article in the Cicago Sun Times. Draft horses killed in accident. They had 59 yearlings loaded in a double decker cattle/hog hauler. The driver of the hauler ran a red light causing an accident with a pick-up truck. He was taking the horses from Indiana to Minnesota. From there who knows, Canada???? Of course they do not yet know who owns them and state police say there MAY be a ticket for hauling them improperly. The driver was allowed to fly home with only tickets for running the light and failure to slow down to avoid an accident. The laws can be changed to make slaughter illegal, they will not stop people from breaking them. Now one of my biggest worries has become a reality. If this driver gets off with just a slap on the hand, it will just give the rest of them the go ahead. He would have totally got away with it if he hadn't gotten into an accident. Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.ht ml for more horse stories, information and resources.
Winter Fuzzies

Breakfast Outdoors

I'm not sure what it is about my husband when he feeds, but the horses and goats have developed some odd morning habits now. I went out to feed and I feed the horses each only one half of scoop of grain first and then I put two flakes of hay in their feeder. I then go back to the feed shed and get a large full scoop of grain for the goats and one flake of hay for them. Once the girls' grain is their exactly the same over the fence feeders, Misty will now take one, maybe two large gulps of grain while Kola scrambles to get as much as she can, then Misty decides that Kola has more and kicks her out of her grain and Kola tries to finish what Misty has left. In the mean time while I'm feeding the goats, Herman goes straight to what is now Misty's feeder, which originally starts as Kola's feeder and fights Misty via head butt and her ears back to get that grain before he realizes that his goat buddies are scoffing up their grain. It's like a well rehearsed comedic ballet! Please vi...

So if you have time I strongly urge you to take a gander at his site and the wildlife photos he has on it. Mini Cooper
2007-10-22 05:25:00
This little guy was originally bought for my mom. I figured she could spoil him instead of my foals and she wouldn't get hurt. He turned out to be a good babysitter for the weanlings. That was until he taught them how to get under the electric fence. Since he was teaching them bad habits I sold him to someone I knew for his weanling. He had a much better fencing system. Then we missed him too much and went and bought him back. I moved him to my new farm and he either baby sat the weanling's or stayed with the Jake when he still was a stud. He soon found a way to get under the fencing and ended up in the farmers soybeans. My friend Paula came down for a visit and fell in love with him. He has 2 little kids that love him and 2 pasture pals. One is a draft horse cross. Cooper stands behind him and lets his tail keep the flies off him. He loves his treats and comes in expecting them. I have to get some pictures of him next to the draft horse. The funniest thing he did was when I came ...

A Cool Cane
2007-10-18 01:57:00
I thought this was a cool lookin' cane. With the horses head on it. which leads me into this post. While some know, however many readers of this blog do not, but I've just been diagnosed with MS. Which in retrospect, explains allot of things over the past two years. I've debated over the past couple of weeks whether or not to post this, but thought why not. There's alot of people out there with this, who are doing well and allot that are suffering. I'm lucky in that although I have minor things (in my mind) going on, I still can move and pretty well at that. So I thought that this cane may be in my future and that's the one would choose. Anyway, it gets one to thinkin'. Thinking how lucky I am to have a supportive wonderful husband who must really love me loads, great smart children between us, a longest standing best friend who's always been there even though I may not have been, and some wonderful four legged companions, who cuddle and listen and never pass judgement, well...

You're Not So Tuff!

Skyco is on the left and Boone on the right. Boone is a yearling stud colt that thinks he can play with the big stud. The electric wasn't working so he thought it was a good time to play with Sky. I couldn't believe that Sky was willing to play with this colt and didn't see him as a stud challenging him. Boone is fully dropped and notices the girls going by. I run the stud colts out together as 2 year olds. They seem to get along better with other horses later. Sky was with other studs as a 2 year old and it proves my theory here. Boone kept trying to take Sky's halter. I had to put an end to it because I had an uncapped post right there. Sky would probably make a good herd stud. He likes the young colts. Crafty Horsey Cards
2007-10-15 21:47:00
This is what I've been all afternoon. I have decided to personalize our Christmas cards this year. I took an old picture of the girls this past winter and made it black and white. I printed it out on pre-made 5x7 cards. I used glue spray and sprinkled the snow part with very fine white and silver glitter and I used a silver paint pen to fill in the space below the picture and I'll use it to write the personal message inside the card. The glitter is hard to see in the pic here, but I rather impressed myself. I had no idea it would turn out so well. Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.ht ml for more horse stories, information and resources.

I think it was Fido the dog that had them wondering what was over there. It made for an awesome picture in my opinion. They both turned at the same time. A nice autumn day in an overgrazed pasture. Roxanne
2007-10-12 05:23:00
I weaned the boys, I haven't weaned the girls yet. I found that the fillies get a little more attached to their Moms. Roxanne is half sister to Cash. She is a bay. She actually belongs to my boyfriend Gerald. I have made it known that she will be mine. I absolutely love her, even though she has an attitude. Cash has an attitude like his daddy, which isn't all bad. He would rather not be touched, he is adjusting. I have found that their attitude allows them to excel in the cutting pen. They really take their job seriously and they have a lot of cow sense. I might just have to trade Cash for her. Free Horse
2007-10-08 03:00:00
These ads are from my local advertiser paper from today in this small community in Wisconsin. I first started noticing these type of ads IE: free horses, adopt my horse, cheap horse for sale, this past spring. Is it the changing economy?(And this economy is just starting it's recession.) Is it the closing of the slaughter houses? Is it the cost of hay and feed as more and more farmers change their hay fields over to corn and sell for fuel? Is it the cost of land? Is it over breeding? What do you all think? I think it's a combination of all. Is this happening in your area? Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.ht ml for more horse stories, information and resources.

Are You Protected?
2007-10-07 17:13:00
If you keep horses on your property, do you have a sign posted similar or like this one? Are you protected from lawsuit, much like that of owning an in-ground swimming pool. How liable are you as a horse owner? Is it something you've thought about? I keep this up and highly visible. As anyone rounds the corner towards where the horses are kept on my property. You can't miss it. When I bought my first horse, Jess told me I had better post a sign so that I wouldn't be liable if someone came onto the property and ended up getting hurt. How do you protect yourself? Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.ht ml for more horse stories, information and resources.

I decided to sit out in the pasture with the girls for awhile this afternoon and this is the reaction I received. She's looking at me like I'm nuts. Then they got bored and went off to eat, but I thought this look on Kola's face was priceless. Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.ht ml for more horse stories, information and resources.
