What you should know about selecting a cat.
2008-05-03 09:55:00
Pets are an important part of the American household. Your pet-owning experience will be most enjoyable if you carefully consider which pet best suits your family, home, and lifestyle. The primary reason pets are given up to animal shelters is unfulfilled expectations, so make an informed decision. Take time, involve your family, and give careful consideration to the following questions before selecting a cat. What's special about cats? Cats make wonderful companions. Their entertaining antics and affectionate behaviors have endeared these animals to millions of owners for thousands of years. Easily house-trained and relatively low maintenance, cats make good indoor pets and most will readily adapt to a variety of environments. What choices do you have in cats? Purebred and mixed-breed cats come in a variety of shapes (head, ears, body, and tail), sizes, colors, personalities, and hair coats. Purebred cats have been selectively bred to enhance certain physical and behavioral charac...

National Pet Week Reminds Animal Lovers That 'Pets Jazz up Our Lives'.
2008-05-03 09:51:00
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. ? National Pet Week, May 4-10, celebrates America's more than 172 million companion animals, and the remarkable role they play in improving the quality of our lives. All across the nation, veterinarians, veterinary technicians and others will use this opportunity to educate the public on how pets improve human health, and how pet owners can return the favor. Dr. Gary S. Brown, a candidate for vice president of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), says his animal clinic will be busy doing public outreach programs during Pet Week. "It's a really fun atmosphere for both people and pets," he explains. "Along with discounted service, we have a poster contest for children. One of the things that makes this contest fun is that a couple of the anchormen from the local television station volunteer their own time to serve as the judges." Public response is strong; Dr. Brown says that his clinic received 470 entries to its poster contest last year and people ...

What you should know about choosing a veterinarian for your pet.
2008-05-03 09:48:00
Today's pets are living longer, healthier lives thanks to the availability of high quality medical services and pet-owners' careful monitoring of their animals for early signs of illness. With so much attention being given by owners to their pets' daily needs, doesn't it make sense to take some time in selecting the veterinarian who will become that pet's health care provider? When choosing your family's veterinarian, use the same care and criteria that you would in selecting a physician or dentist. Think about what is important to you. Location? Convenient hours? Range of medical services? Friendliness and commitment of doctors and staff? Payment options? Your goal should be to find the veterinarian who you believe can best meet your pet's medical needs and with whom you feel comfortable in establishing a long-term relationship. The veterinarian you select will want to maintain an ongoing history of your pet, including health records that detail immunizations, reactions...

With Garden Season Be Aware of Tomatoe Plants
2008-04-24 11:00:00
If you are growing your own tomatoes, keep your pets away from them. Tomatoes contain atropine, a product sometimes used to treat eye problems in animals. But too much atropine can cause dilated pupils, tremors and heart arrhythmias. The leaves and stems of tomato plants have particularly high levels of atropine.

What is an AAFCO statement?
2008-04-22 09:48:00
The "AAFCO statement of nutritional adequacy or purpose" ? also called a "nutrition claim" or "complete and balanced statement" ? identifies which life stage and/or lifestyle the product has been approved for. Under AAFCO regulations, this statement must be substantiated by the manufacturer. AAFCO recognizes three methods for substantiating the claim: Laboratory analysis Finished product is compared to minimum nutritional values established by AAFCO Nutrient Profiles for dogs or cats. Label states: "ABC Dog (Cat) Food is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog (Cat) Food Nutrient Profiles for (appropriate life stage)." Feeding trials Finished product that has been laboratory tested is fed to dogs or cats according to AAFCO protocols. Label states: "Animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate that ABC Dog (Cat) Food provides complete and balanced nutrition for (appropriate life stage)." A Brief overview of the Bombay cat breed.
2008-04-15 13:13:00
Nikki Horner is given credit for developing this breed after hearing many people stating that ?I?d love to own a panther?. So from her Louisville, Kentucky home she set out to develop a Panther like cat. Her goal was on producing a copper-eyed black shorthaired cat with the exotic appearance of a ?mini? or ?parlor panther?. So she started her development of the breed in 1953 by selecting of a Black American Shorthair male with deep colored copper eyes and a Grand Champion Sable Burmese female. After a long process of breeding she became able to consistently produce a black cat. The Bombay achieved CFA Championship status in 1976. Bombay?s are very unique cats. Many Bombays can be leashed trained and love to play ?fetch?. The Bombay is very outgoing and are very intelligent. They love to greet visitors ( they sure will not hide ) to your home and interact well with children. Bombays get along well with other pets. Bombay?s are true lap cats, they love to sit on their owners laps...

Feline Agility -- What is it?
2008-04-15 08:47:00
Cat Agility involves leading or getting your cat through an obstacle course. The course consists of Hurdles, Hoops, Weave Pools, and Stairs. Cats enter the ring and are given some time to get use to the ring.Once a cat gets use to the ring the cat is lead through the course by it's handler ( the handler uses a toy- such a s lure toy). The handler should not touch the cat but can entice or encourage the cat around the course. The cat is timed during it's run through the course. Timing starts when the cat touches first obstacle and ends when last obstacle is completed. The score is not only based on time but, number of obstacles completed, if the cat completes all obstacles, bonus points are given for seconds under the maximum allowed time of 4 minutes 30 seconds.Cat Agility events are fun for the whole family. The cats are quite entertaining. Many of the cats will have no problem getting through the course, while others think the object is to put their handler through the ...

Birman Personality
2008-03-18 18:22:00
Birmans are affectionate, gentle, and faithful companions with an air of dignity that seems to invite adoration by their human companions. As former temple cats, Birmans seem to have become accustomed to adoration. They are very intelligent and affectionate, according to fanciers, and very people-oriented. They will generally greet visitors with curiosity rather than fear. Because of their gentle temperaments, Birmans are easy to handle, care for, and show, and they make ideal pets for anyone who wants quiet companions that will offer love and affection in return for just a little well-deserved worship.

2008-03-12 07:42:00
The Hartz Mountain Corporation is voluntarily recalling a second specific lot of Hartz Vitamin Care for Cats due to concerns that bottles within the lot may have been potentially contaminated with Salmonella. Hartz is fully cooperating with the US Food and Drug Administration in this voluntary recall. Hartz recalled a specific lot code of Hartz Vitamin Care for Cats last November due to similar concerns. Both lot codes were manufactured for Hartz by UFAC (USA) Inc. in 2007, and were removed from distribution last November. However, bottles from the second lot had been shipped to customers prior to their having been removed from distribution. A risk of mercury from Compact Bulbs
2008-03-05 11:25:00
Spiral, energy-efficient bulbs are becoming very popular. However they can pose a small risk of mercury poisoning if they break, also when they do burn out they should not be disposed of in the regular trash.Maine Environmental officials along with the Vermont based Mercury Policy Project state the bulbs can pose a mercury poisoning risk if they break. If the bulb breaks mercury can vaporize into the air. However they do state that most danger can be avoided by using common sense.-- Do not use bulbs in table lamps that could be easily knocked over by children or pets.-- Properly clean up if a bulb breaks.-- Some states do not allow these bulbs to be thrown away in regular trash. Properly dispose of them. IKEA offers recycling bins. The study suggests these steps for clean up.-- Get children and pets out of the room.-- Ventilate the room.-- Never use a vacuum ( not even on a rug).-- Use stiff paper ( such as an index card) and tape to pick up the pieces.-- If young children, pets, pre...

Mike Brock -- "Pet Detective"
2008-03-05 10:16:00
Mike Brock of Lee County Sheriffs Office is jokingly known as the "Pet Detective ".Here's the story. Sydney Williams prized cat, "Taz" - a Savannah Cat had gone missing. Williams owns five cats and five dogs. Taz did not show up for dinner and by the next morning Sydney knew something was wrong.William's at the time had many contractors coming and going from her property as she was getting work done. This is where Mike Brock steps into the picture. Mike tracked down the contractors. Brock states " I basically told them it would be in everybody's best interest if this cat was returned to the family safe and unharmed."Within a couple of days the cat was returned.Williams stated " I don't even know what to say about Detective Brock. We truly believe if it wasn't;t for him, we would have never seen Taz again." Willams decided not to press charges.

In 1994, at the initiative of the Italian member of the Fédération Internationale Féline (FIFe), a gathering of representatives of some of the world?s major cat organizations took place in Venice.  The purpose was to discuss matters of mutual interest and concern, such as cat-related legislation and feline welfare, which affects all cat lovers from the pedigree breeder to the pet owner.  Some of those taking part saw the importance of international cooperation and they now hold an annual meeting which has become known as the World Cat Congress .  CFA is a proud member of the World Cat Congress and will be hosting the annual meeting and cat show in Houston, TX on March 28-31, 2008.
AVMA Reminds Pet Owners During Pet Dental Health Month That Pets Suffer wit
2008-02-16 09:25:00
Bad breath and yellowing teeth are two of the earliest signs. But if left untreated, these easily overlooked symptoms of poor dental health can develop into periodontal disease or gingivitis. Even worse, it sometimes leads to kidney, liver, or heart disease. Most people don't understand the serious consequences of poor pet dental. That's why the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is using this month to emphasize the importance of pet dental health. February is Pet Dental Health Month. "Dental health is very important for the overall health of our companion animals, and that's why we are a sponsor of Pet Dental Health Month," explains Dr. Gregory S. Hammer, president of the AVMA. "Many pet owners simply don't appreciate the importance of maintaining good dental health practices. As a result, dental disease is very common among companion animals. Pet Dental Health Month emphasizes working together with your veterinarian to establish an appropriate dental health regimen...

Breed Standard for Japanese Bobtail
2008-02-05 20:06:00
GENERALThe Japanese Bobtail should present the overall impression of a medium sized cat with clean lines and bone structure, well-muscled but straight and slender rather than massive in build. The unique set of its eyes, combined with high cheek bones and a long parallel nose, lend a distinctive Japanese cast to the face, especially in profile, quite different from the other oriental breeds. Its short tail should resemble a bunny tail with the hair fanning out to create a pom-pom appearance which effectively camouflages the underlying bone structure of the tail. HEADAlthough the head appears long and finely chiseled, it forms almost a perfect equilateral triangle (the triangle does not include the ears) with gentle curving lines, high cheekbones, and a noticeable whisker break, the nose long and well-defined by two parallel lines from tip to brow with a gentle dip at, or just below, eye level. Allowance must be made for jowls in the stud cat. EARSLarge, upright, and expressive, set ...
