FDA Tips for Preventing Foodborne Illness Associated with Pet Food and Pet
2009-02-10 16:40:00
FDA is informing consumers of steps they can take to help prevent foodborne illness, including Salmonella-related illness, when handling pet foods and treats.  Pet food and treats, like many other types of foods, can be susceptible to harmful bacterial contamination.  During calendar year 2007, 15 pet products have been recalled due to Salmonella contamination; however, to date none of these products have been directly linked to human illness. Salmonella in pet foods and treats can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination, in people too, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems.  Salmonella in pet food and treats can potentially be transferred to people ingesting or handling contaminated pet food and treats. While the FDA has stepped up its efforts to minimize the incidence of foodborne illness associated with pet foods and treats, it?s important that consumers be mindful of the potential r...

How do I know if my dog or cat has Salmonella?
2009-02-10 16:38:00
How do I know if my dog or cat has Salmonella ? Dogs and cats that become ill from Salmonella generally will have diarrhea that may contain blood or mucus and fever. Affected animals may seem more tired than usual, and may have vomiting. Some cats do not have diarrhea, but will have a decreased appetite, fever, and excess salivation. Some dogs or cats may have Salmonella but may not appear to be sick. If your dog or cat has these signs of illness or you are concerned that your pet may have Salmonella, please contact your veterinarian. Let your veterinarian know if your dog recently consumed a recalled product. Do not feed your pet anymore of the recalled product. Dispose of the product immediately. How are Salmonella infections diagnosed and treated in dogs, cats, and other animals? See your veterinarian. A veterinary examination and laboratory tests can be used to diagnose Salmonella in animals. Salmonella infections may require prompt treatment with supportive care and fluids. ...

Water Safety
2008-07-28 15:32:00
For many families, summertime includes a lot of swimming time. Dogs joining pet owners on lakeside, oceanside or poolside adventures should abide by the following tips: Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool. Not all dogs are good swimmers, so if water sports are a big part of a pet-owning family, they should introduce their pets to water gradually. Make sure all pets wear flotation devices on boats. Dogs should not drink pool water because chlorine and other chemicals can cause GI upset.

Midwest flooding affects animals, veterinary clinics
2008-07-28 15:29:00
The floodwaters that inundated many Midwest river towns between late May and mid-June left veterinarians assessing losses while continuing to aid animals. By late June, many people had returned home with their animals. Other residents were cleaning out houses while their pets remained in temporary shelters. The damage seemed to be the worst in Iowa for veterinarians and other residents, though veterinarians in Indiana also sustained damage to clinics or homes. Iowa floodingIn Iowa, thousands of residents evacuated when the rivers rose. The Iowa Veterinary Rapid Response Team mobilized early to help staff temporary animal shelters. In Cedar Rapids, a temporary shelter at Kirkwood Community College accepted hundreds of pets?mostly dogs and cats?from both evacuees and disaster responders. Shelter volunteers included veterinary technicians and veterinary technician students, many from the community college, along with veterinarians and veterinary students, many from nearby Iowa State Un...

What you should know about traveling with your pet
2008-05-27 17:21:00
Planning and Preparation Planning and preparation are necessary when traveling with family pets. Consider whether your pet is comfortable when traveling. Some animals, like some people, function better in familiar surroundings. A car-sick animal can make a trip miserable for everyone. Some dogs and cats cannot withstand the rigors of travel due to illness, injury, or temperament. If this is the case, discuss options such as using a reliable pet-sitter or a clean, well-managed boarding facility with your veterinarian. If you will be staying with friends along the way, be considerate. Find out in advance if the pet is welcome. The same goes for hotels, motels, parks, and campgrounds. Always check whether pets are allowed or kennel facilities are available. If the pet must be left alone in a hotel room, place a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door and inform the maid and the front desk. Consider bringing along a portable kennel for use in hotel rooms or the homes of friends or relatives w...

What you should know about selecting a cat.
2008-05-03 09:55:00
Pets are an important part of the American household. Your pet-owning experience will be most enjoyable if you carefully consider which pet best suits your family, home, and lifestyle. The primary reason pets are given up to animal shelters is unfulfilled expectations, so make an informed decision. Take time, involve your family, and give careful consideration to the following questions before selecting a cat. What's special about cats? Cats make wonderful companions. Their entertaining antics and affectionate behaviors have endeared these animals to millions of owners for thousands of years. Easily house-trained and relatively low maintenance, cats make good indoor pets and most will readily adapt to a variety of environments. What choices do you have in cats? Purebred and mixed-breed cats come in a variety of shapes (head, ears, body, and tail), sizes, colors, personalities, and hair coats. Purebred cats have been selectively bred to enhance certain physical and behavioral charac...
About National Pet Week
2008-05-03 09:52:00
National Pet Week was jointly founded in 1981 by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Auxiliary to the AVMA, and is now widely celebrated throughout the United States and other parts of the world. In 2007, the week will be observed May 6-12. Each year, its goals are: to promote responsible pet ownership, celebrate the human-animal bond, and promote public awareness of veterinary medicine.

National Pet Week Reminds Animal Lovers That 'Pets Jazz up Our Lives'.
2008-05-03 09:51:00
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. ? National Pet Week, May 4-10, celebrates America's more than 172 million companion animals, and the remarkable role they play in improving the quality of our lives. All across the nation, veterinarians, veterinary technicians and others will use this opportunity to educate the public on how pets improve human health, and how pet owners can return the favor. Dr. Gary S. Brown, a candidate for vice president of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), says his animal clinic will be busy doing public outreach programs during Pet Week. "It's a really fun atmosphere for both people and pets," he explains. "Along with discounted service, we have a poster contest for children. One of the things that makes this contest fun is that a couple of the anchormen from the local television station volunteer their own time to serve as the judges." Public response is strong; Dr. Brown says that his clinic received 470 entries to its poster contest last year and people ...

What you should know about choosing a veterinarian for your pet.
2008-05-03 09:48:00
Today's pets are living longer, healthier lives thanks to the availability of high quality medical services and pet-owners' careful monitoring of their animals for early signs of illness. With so much attention being given by owners to their pets' daily needs, doesn't it make sense to take some time in selecting the veterinarian who will become that pet's health care provider? When choosing your family's veterinarian, use the same care and criteria that you would in selecting a physician or dentist. Think about what is important to you. Location? Convenient hours? Range of medical services? Friendliness and commitment of doctors and staff? Payment options? Your goal should be to find the veterinarian who you believe can best meet your pet's medical needs and with whom you feel comfortable in establishing a long-term relationship. The veterinarian you select will want to maintain an ongoing history of your pet, including health records that detail immunizations, reactions...

With Garden Season Be Aware of Tomatoe Plants
2008-04-24 11:00:00
If you are growing your own tomatoes, keep your pets away from them. Tomatoes contain atropine, a product sometimes used to treat eye problems in animals. But too much atropine can cause dilated pupils, tremors and heart arrhythmias. The leaves and stems of tomato plants have particularly high levels of atropine.
