New: PocketWizard Remote Transceiver Caddy
2007-12-03 02:11:00 Lon tipped me off to an interesting new product designed for mounting PocketWizard flash (and camera) triggers onto various things such as light stands and flash heads. He provided me with one to play around with & so far I've got mixed opinions on its usefulness.Don't get me wrong - this thing is very cool. I think I'm going to be very pleased with the one I have & how I plan to use it. However, I do not plan on picking up one for each of my PW's because I'm not sure that the light stand mount is a significant improvement over the simple lanyard-style cord that comes standard with the PW.Light Stand MountingI cannot argue that the mount to the light stand looks better than hanging it from the string and there is something to having the antenna oriented perfectly vertically. That said, I am ok with just hanging the PW from the lanyard and letting it swing in the breeze - it works fine over any range that I've tried (including across a small lake) and I don't thin... Hot Deal on the Canon 1Ds Mark III (or: Why Calumet Rules)
2007-11-30 23:13:00 Looking for the best deal possible on camera gear this Christmas? Bummed that the Canon Rebates aren't quite the hot deal that they were in years past? Here's how to save $500 on a new Canon 1Ds Mark III (or other expensive gear!) just by switching from Adorama or B&H.I can't make the rebates any better, but allow me to share with you a great experience I've had when buying gear recently: Calumet Photographic. Why Calumet Rules First off, let me make it clear that this is in no way a paid advertisement! I wish I could say that it were, but unfortunately I don't draw that kind of endorsement water (yet?). Besides having a great selection of high-end camera gear, lighting, and studio equipment, there are two key areas that will make me a huge repeat customer of Calumet.1. Ridiculously Fast Shipping on the Cheap! So here's the deal: Calumet will ship any order placed before 4:00PM on the *same day*. This applies to all levels of shipping, not just 2-day or overnight oh-my-... More About: Deal , Anon
I Thought Pigs Could Fly from Edgecliff Press
2007-11-29 23:36:00 Ari Buchwald contacted me via email recently to inform me of his new startup publishing company: Edgecliff Press . Here's what he has to say about his new company's model:We focus on niches that large publishers will not touch and use a new blended business model that combines the best aspects of various publishing models and new online and digital services.Their second publication I Thought Pigs Could Fly! is due out this month and focuses on Cincinnati Photography. There is going to be a reception/book signing at the Final Friday this month (11/30/2007) from 6 to 9 PM at The Gathering 1431 Main Street, Cincinnati, OH.Though I don't make it to Final Friday as often as I'd like, I would encourage you to check it out if you're able. Photo Contests Gallore: Photocompete.com
2007-11-26 03:25:00 I got a tip from Andrew Beliavskiy recently about his new blog Photo Compete.com. He has a nice start going over there with a nicely designed layout and most importantly: content! Content is king in the blogosphere (just ask John Chow or Darren Rowse) and Photo Compete has a ton of it.Andrew does a good job of documenting & tracking just about every photo contest that's currently out there... well, at least he's got all the ones I've heard of & a lot more (though I admit that I don't often participate in these contests). He also gives a quick rundown on each detailing the applicable entry fees, eligibility requirements, and - most importantly - copyright & rights information. A lot of "photo contests" are really just thinly veiled ways for a company to get images to use on the cheap... my advice is to carefully read and understand every detail of the terms before you enter. With over 300 RSS Subscribers, Photo Compete looks to be off to a great start & I wish And... Black Friday deals for Photographers
2007-11-23 14:58:00 Well, you won't see me out shopping today - though my wife is one of the many who were out by 6am or earlier to get a head start on the day-after-Thanksgiving deals. I'd much prefer to skip the crowds and catch online savings!Trouble is, I'm not sure that I've seen a ton of photographer-oriented deals out there so far. There are, of course, the Canon Rebates but they aren't as good as in year's past. Anyone seen anything good out there in Photoland?Amazon.com Black Friday DealsThere is a whole page dedicated to Black Friday over at Amazon... they've got a little bit of everything, so you may find some photo-related items. I have seen a digital picture frame, but didn't pull the trigger (we're looking for one for a gift, but I haven't figured out which one to buy just yet). They're doing a special deal every hour all day, so you may want to check back a few times to see what's cookin'.Good deal on (copy) paper! One thing I have ordered so far is 10 reams of copy pape... Lightroom 1.3 Freezing with nVidia ForceWare 169.04
2007-11-19 03:18:00 This evening I installed the latest update to Photoshop Lightroom , which brought me up to version 1.3 (Windows). I was having some trouble with it freezing my system - I would be using it for a very brief period of time and then my system video would lock up solid... mouse won't move, nothing seems to be responding - pretty much dead. Note that I did NOT have this problem with Lightroom 1.2 or earlier. So, after rebooting and seeing the behavior again I briefly searched to see of others had this problem. No luck there. Since it looks like the video freezes up, I suspected the video drivers & found that I was running a beta version of nVidia's ForceWare driver (version 169.04 to be specific) on my eVGA 8400GS. There is a slightly newer beta driver (169.09) available, but I decided to back down to the latest "official" driver, which is version 163.75 and is WHQL Certified. After all, I'm not using the system for games & therefore don't need the cutting-edge tweaks th...
Ring Flash week at Strobist: DIY rules.
2007-11-16 02:55:00 Well, it's officially Ring Flash Week over at the Strobist blog. Today David posted a killer DIY Ring Flash that looks so awesome you'd think the guy was building a prototype space craft.A 16" diameter concrete pier form? ...Are you effing kidding me?!? This is way more hardcore than my DIY Ghetto Monitor stand! (By the way, it is still standing! LG initially sent me the wrong part & is now in the process of a second attempt... here's hoping!)Well, while I have to admit that this looks pretty awesome, even painted black it may look a bit silly and be awful unwieldy. If I really wanted the ring flash look at an affordable price I'd probably just buy the ABR800 and call it a day, but some people are really into the satisfaction of home brew... Canon 1Ds MKIII goes to Madagascar
2007-11-16 00:55:00 Canadian native Michael Reichmann has just added a great article to his Luminous Landscape web site detailing his two-week stint in Madagascar with a pre-production Canon 1Ds MKIII. Michael relays some great anecdotes about the trip, airport security, shooting people in a rural, impoverished environment, and (of course) some of his thoughts on the new high-end body from Canon. He spices up the article with a showcase of some of the incredible images that he made while on the trip. I'm always a big fan of his photography and the Madagascar portfolio is so far no exception. While the $8k MKIII isn't exactly in my '08 equipment budget (nor is it likely to make the cut in 2009...), it's pretty interesting to hear some thoughts on the current top-of-the-line gear and see results from a reviewer who knows what he's doing. As usual, Michael focuses on real-world usage of the camera as opposed to a technical breakdown - which is a good thing since DPReivew will almost certainly have e... More About: Anon
Two new Photoshop Books

In this book, he goes through a ton of photographs and follows the same seven steps with each to go from good to great. Marching Band Photography Tips
2007-11-08 01:48:00 My friend Dan Zeis has been shooting (among other things) Marching Band Competitions for the past couple of years and I help him out from time to time with it. He's made a decent event business out of this, selling prints and gifts to the band parents via his website. Here are some tips on shooting marching bands in no particular order...The bigger they are......The harder they are to capture! Marching Band s are rated in a class system that varies a bit in specifics depending on the competition, but most always the system is based on size:A – Up to 36 wind playersAA – 37–54 wind playersAAA – 55–77 wind playersAAAA – 78–100 wind playersOpen (or AAAAA in some cases) – 101 or more wind playersThe competition performances are typically around 12-14 minutes in length and that's not a lot of time when your goal is to get a clear shot of each individual member!Exposure settingsDark skies & dark uniforms, sunny days with white accents - these are challenging conditio... LG L246WP: Sweet monitor, ghetto stand
2007-11-06 04:24:00 I picked up a new LG L246WP 24" Widescreen LCD this weekend... Here's a quick look at my current desk setup:Pretty sweet, right? Well... take a closer look at that stand holding up the monitor:Hm... So the quick story is that I went to Best Buy to pick up one of these after I decided on the model following some (fairly detailed & in-depth) research on the available 24" models. (I'll get into the specifics on what to look for in an LCD monitor in a future post.)Well, the store I was at had two available: one new, one open box. The sticker on the open box said "missing stand" and the price was very significantly marked down - about 1/3 off! So, I ask to open it up and check it out - everything looked good & I even had the so-called "Geek Squad" hook it up to a PC so that I could check for any dead pixels. There were none! It would appear that the previous buyer opened the box, saw that there was no base, and immediately returned it to the store.Since everything looked g... More About: Sweet , Monitor , Ghetto , Stand
Screwlock PC Cables: Best thing since Velcro
2007-11-05 00:27:00 I'm posting this toward the end of "National Screwlock Week" over at FlashZebra.com. My friend from the CCofC, Lon, has been cooking up all sort of flash sync cables that have the screwlock variant of the PC connector on one end.The screwlock connector can be used on a wide variety of camera bodies and flashes that provide a screwlock-compatible jack. The big benefit to this style of connector is that (unlike standard PC Connectors) it locks onto what you're connecting to and won't wiggle free.Lon hooked me up with a short cord that will connect my Canon 30D's PC-sync port to a PocketWizard that I Velcro to my (shoe-mounted) 580EX flash. I use the 580 for a little fill and the PocketWizard triggers my various remote strobes. It's a nice setup except for the fact that a standard PC cable tends to work itself loose & sooner or later the remotes aren't firing. No more with the Screwlock!I won't bother regurgitating all of the details as Lon has put together a very deta... More About: Cables , Thing
Antarctica Expedition Contest

And, while I had previously learned quite a bit of these techniques from other reading & exercises I've done, it's great to hear it all laid out by these guys in sequence.Jeff and Michael cover everything from how to properly calibrate your computer to which printers to buy and which papers to print on. 2007 Canon Rebates - No double-dipping!
2007-11-02 00:04:00 The Canon Rebates are out for 2007 and while the program is different than the Cash In With Canon double rebates of year's past, there are still some good deals. This time around the hot deals are focused exclusively on lenses (and the new 580EX MK-II flash) - curious since they've just released several new bodies including the very popular 40D. (To be fair, there is a separate rebate program available that'll save you some money on a body, but it requires the simultaneous purchase of a printer & looks like it could be pretty error prone - I'd stay away.)Also kind of a bummer is that there is no doubling of the rebates in this year's program. In the past, you could get twice as much off of two or more items - buy more, save more. That led to some pretty hot deals!Anyway, what follows is a list of the lenses eligible for this year's Canon Rebate, linked over to Amazon where you can end up saving even more with no tax and free shipping. Kevin Zupp's concert photos
2007-10-29 03:16:00 Wanted to give a quick shout out to Kevin Zupp, who recently contacted me regarding some of my concert photography tips. He was curious as to how close you can be with a 50mm on a crop body like the Nikon D200 and still have a useful focal length. He was going to be shooting in the media area right in front of the stage & so his concern is probably valid depending (of course) on what he wants to shoot. Full-length is right out, but tight closeups of the singer or details of the guitar could definitely work. It all really depends on the setup of the venue & the stage. At the end of the day it'd probably be great to bring two bodies in with you, one with a wide angle and the other with the 50mm. If that's not possible then I'd go with the 50 alone.Check out his photos! One of Kevin's photographs is used as the thumbnail link in this article. Visit his site for more. Two reviews of the Canon 40D
2007-10-27 17:56:00 Here are two reviews of what is likely to be in my camera bag soon, the Canon EOS 40D. It'll be an upgrade from my 30D and I'll likely sell off my 20D that's currently used as a backup. Either that or I'll convert it to being a dedicated IR body...What's interesting about these two reviews are the different points of view taken. The first, from The Luminous Landscape, is focused on subjective image quality and usage tests - does the camera work well in the field and how to the prints look? The second review, from DPReview, is the "pixel-peeper" perspective - treat it like the computer that it is and run it through the gauntlet of very precise, technical evaluations. Each approach has its merits and we're (we == the consumer) better for the work that these guys have put into their respective articles. Some folks tend to put more weight behind one view or the other; I'm a little more in the middle: at the end of the day I want high quality output from a camera that works we... Who owns your photo? It Depends!
2007-10-16 09:22:00 Recently there has been a lot of discussion surrounding the topic of "Who owns your photo?" Note that this isn't a Copyright issue - e.g., who owns the photos I have taken, but rather Who owns my likeness? Or put more simply, Who can use a picture of me?The answer is simple: it depends!Well, that is to say that while you and only you own your likeness, you're only in total control of it when it is being used commercially. In the US, anyone can take your picture when you are in a public place and use it for non-commercial purposes - which includes editorial, reportage, and art. Of course there are exceptions to this rule, such as public places where you would have a "reasonable expectation of privacy", such as a bathroom or fitting room, but for the most part the general rule applies.Commercial use is a whole 'nother ballgame...Virgin AustraliaThe debate has been stirred up most recently due to an ad that Virgin Mobile Australia ran featuring the image of a girl holding her han... Nice Dappled Sunlight in Ault Park
2007-10-01 12:42:00 Recently I went down to Ault Park for a quick shoot. The sun was heading down & since it was such a nice day the park was kind of busy. Instead of fighting the crowd near the pavilion, we noticed some nice light coming through the willow trees near the entrance. The trees provided some interesting dappled light that we used on as the highlight on the model's left, while a speedlight in a shoot-through umbrella provided some fill on the right. The trick to getting this to work is to make sure that she's standing in just the right place - a step forward or backward would take her out of the light & you'd lose the effect. A good trick is to watch your shadow - if you can see the outline of your head in the shadow then you're in the sunlight. In this next shot, I kept the same lighting setup but pulled back a bit in order to shoot through the leaves of the trees & get a bit of the feel of the scenery involved. Both images shot with the Canon 50mm f/1.4 on the Canon 30D.... Window light is your strobe's best friend...
2007-09-25 02:26:00 I recently worked as the second-shooter covering a wedding in the Cincinnati area. One of my primary tasks was to get some nice shots of the guys pre-wedding as they got ready over at the house. Here's a nice portrait of Adam, the groom:The lighting on this photo is simple, but awesome. I put Adam in a chair near a North-facing window in the dining room. To his left, I had a large gold reflector to add just a bit more light to the shadow side of his face... all the while my strobes sat on their stands & watched with envy! (Well, maybe not - they were probably thankful for a break!)This was shot hand held with the Canon 50mm f/1.4 on the 30D, 1/200 sec @ f/2.0, ISO400. Should be a shoo-in for the album!Moral of the story: if you see a North-facing window give your strobes a chance to catch their breath! Do you back up your docs & photos? Radio-based TTL Flash Sync System?
2007-09-20 02:10:00 If this product works the way it claims to, then it may be the small flash user's Pocket Wizard Killer! The official “first look” press release of the Radio Popper - the world’s first fully integrated Radio Signal based TTL flash trigger system. This quick-look single page will bring you up speed on this exciting new product. This is all VaporWare at this point, but if they can pull it off it'd be quite sweet indeed. I think it's a tall order: triggering flashes is one thing - all you need to do is reproduce a single trigger voltage - in order to do TTL you need interactive 2-way communication between the camera and flash. It'll be tough to communicate those signals across the radio waves & then recreate it so faithfully that the flash and camera believe that they're still one unit...Still, here's hopin'! It'd certainly be cool to see it work.To learn more, check out their site which contains the one-page PDF press release: RadioPopper - Radio TTL Flash System . Do ... More About: Sync , Base
