Wedding Album Season
2007-11-22 21:31:00
Happy Turkey Day! Hope everyone’s doing well. It’s album design time and I’ve been putting together albums and albums and albums and albums. Here’s one I figured I’d post so you all can get a sense of what they’re like. This one’s from Amy and TJ’s wedding this past August in Estes Park. They chose a really awesome PictoBook, which are available in metal or wooden covers. Theirs was a metal covered album that will look something like this: Black leather binding, aluminum cover, and a nice cameo on the side. The PictoBooks are awesome. Check them out online at www.pictobooks.com. Here are a few spreads from the album, too.

Window Ninja 101
2007-11-12 00:00:00
Sorry, more dorky house maintenance stuff. I’ll try to keep it to a minimum! A few days ago we had 20 windows in our living room, which was annoying. And then we started putting them in, and things got even more annoying. I’m surprised I can type right now given the times I’ve turned my thumb into ground beef with the hammer. Yeeouch. 10 down and 10 to go. The guy who sold us our house didn’t tell us about the leaky roof and the leaky windows, so as we installed the windows we also had to reframe a bunch of them because the leaks had rotted the wood away. I have absolutely zero idea what I’m doing but at least I’ve got some mad style points. Dig the hat? Once we ripped the old windows out, we built new window frames. … And then we stood back and observed our handy work. The guy who looks like he knows what he’s doing is our buddy Alex. Alicia, who took these pictures, is psyched to do all the trim work on the inside of the house. T...

Home sweet home

Straying from the wedding and portrait theme lately, but hey, I think this stuff is cool. Our home! First, something with big paws and big claws visited us the other night — we think it was a bear trying to get into the hot tub for a soak. Notice the claw marks on the cover. Then there’s our new stereo cabinet, which I think is spiffy. I’ve never been good at making stuff with my hands, so I’m kinda proud of this. We pulled a bunch of cedar off the walls in the basement, but we didn’t want to throw it out. So I made a coffee table out of it. The table was supposed to be square, but it turned into a really ugly trapezoid (lots of character at least). I figured I’d have to redeem myself so I made this thing. Cool, huh? Then there’s our new drywall project. Check out the before, middle and after pictures. We couldn’t deal with the water-stained roofing shingles in our living room. And last is my super cool birthday present!! We wa...

2007-10-28 22:42:00
Yes! About time! We’ve been meaning to go to Indian Creek and Penitente Canyon for months, and we finally did a few weeks ago. The usual suspects consisted of me and Alicia, Toots, 5 crazy Norwegians (two of whom are good friends we met in New Zealand) and a Canadian guy named Tee, who just started a 6 month climbing trip and is now probably half way to Mexico to hit up El Potrero Chico. The two Norwegians we already knew are Maja and Terje. Maja is pronounced “Maya,” while Terje is pronounced “Tah-dee-uh,” which is too complicated for me so I call him TJ. So meet Maja (at our campsite), TJ (on Supercrack) and Tee (on Binge and Purge). TJ works on oil rigs in the middle of the North Sea doing real safe stuff like changing the spouts that spew out all the flames. Not sure exactly why, but he’s looking for a slight career change, and photography is his top choice. I copied my outdoor sports website, spruced it up a little bit, changed the logo an...
Convict Lake Wedding, Mammoth, CA
2007-10-05 15:54:00
What a great way to end the season: at Steph and Scott’s wedding at Convict Lake , on the east side of the Sierras just outside of Mammoth. Totally awesome wedding, despite it being rainy all day. Not that it mattered much — I think everyone had a rockin’ good time. I decided to set up a photo booth in their ceremony tent (first time ever) and it was a hit. Guests were in there all night taking pictures of themselves, but sometimes there were just one or two people alone in there clicking away… Mayhem! I found some surprises when I looked at the images the next day! I think I might set up a photo booth whenever possible, though, since the shots are just too funny. Anyway, congrats Steph and Scott — you’ve always got a place to crash when you’re climbing in Colorado!

Toots almost gets owned by a deer!
2007-09-28 19:17:00
So we’re trying to clean up a guest bedroom on a windy, cold Saturday when we hear Toots throwing a hysterical fit outside. He’s ADD to begin with, so when he gets fixated on something, well, beware. This time he couldn’t take his eyes off of a huge deer on the other side of our fence — and the deer appeared to be taunting him. I grabbed my little point and shoot and started recording a movie. I wish I was fluent in Dog and Deer . Toots: Get out! My yard! My yaaarrrd!! My my my yard! Mine! Mine! Deer: Dude, step off. Toots: Get out get out get out get out get out get out. Get out! Get out get out get out! Deer: I’m 20 times your size. Do you know who you’re talking to? Toots: Get out get out get out get out get out get out!! Get out!!!! Mine mine mine!! Or something. Anyway, this is how it ended. If there wasn’t a fence in the way, Toots could have been worked. Or he would have ran into the house with the deer chasing him, in which case we&rs...

San Luis Obispo Wedding
2007-09-26 12:15:00
Just finished editing Lara and Mica’s totally awesome wedding outside of San Luis Obispo, CA at this amazing blue barn at the Swallow Creek Ranch. Lara and Mica totally rock. Their irreverent, hillarious senses of humor make them a great match. Congratulation you two! The Ranch was perhaps the most spectacular venue I’ve ever been to. It was the perfect blend of rustic, classy elegance. It’s up a small canyon with a nearby lookout onto the blue Pacific. Man was I missing California, if only for a bit. Oh yeah, if you’re looking for inspiration on how to decorate your wedding, look no further. The inside of the barn was ablaze in lanterns and lights. It was so cool. Check it:

Eastern Sierra fun
2007-09-22 12:47:00
Awesome! I’m shooting an absolutely killer wedding later today in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains at this place called Convict Lake, which is just down the road from Mammoth. I flew in a few days ago and have been hanging out with some Norwegians we met in New Zealand, who are wrapping up a year-long jaunt through Thailand, the South Pacific, Canada and America. For the last few days we’ve been waking up, sitting in hot springs, climbing, sitting in hot springs, and then going to sleep. Not a bad life! The other day TJ and I went up to climb one of the most photogenic boulder problems in Bishop, a proud line called Atari that’s shaped like the videogame symbol. I’m psyched with some of the images I captured of him up there. Check it: Then TJ caught a few pictures of me on some of the other super-mega-classics at the Happies. Ahh. Lovin’ it. Lovin’ it. Pictures from the wedding will come soon!

WPJA Contest winners
2007-09-21 08:21:00
Just got the results from the second quarter WPJA contest, and hooray! Honored with a couple of winners! I’m psyched, especially after I looked at the competition. One pic placed 5th in the action category, from Alex and Jasen’s wedding in Palo Alto earlier this summer. I didn’t realize it was that cool of an image at first, but after staring at it for a while it started to grow on me. And then there was a 16th place in the kids category from Julia and Patrick’s Estes Park wedding in July. The flower girls didn’t quite know what to make of all the people in the chapel staring at them! if you get a chance, check out the WPJA.com site and look at all the great images. There are some fantastic photos in there, lots of inspiration and great ideas.

I’m editing Sloan and Brian’s wedding right now and figured I’d post what has got to be the weirdest picture I’ve taken all summer. It’s a getting ready shot involving mirrors. The more I look at it, the less sense it makes! More from their big day later.

Tooters!
2007-09-16 21:05:00
A while back I mentioned that we’d gotten a farting Basenji that we named Toots. Here he is! Not the greatest pic, but enquiring minds want to know. We don’t know where his nipped ear came from. The furrowed brow is a typical Basenji thing. By the way, Basenji literally translates to ‘bush thing.’ Today Alicia was with him at the dog park while I was getting paint, and a crazy storm came in. I looked out the store window and hightailed it to the park to find Alicia soaked to the skin and Toots shivering like mad. So of course we had to go get him a parka. With a hood. I think he likes it. We’re such suckers.

Arrowhead Golf Course Wedding - Beaver Creek
2007-09-13 08:48:00
Gina and Brad had a smaller wedding that I absolutely loved. I was talking to Alicia the other day about what really makes a wedding click for me, and I think it’s when the celebration is a great reflection of the couple’s personality — and Gina and Brad did just that. They are food buffs, so their wedding was a ceremony, a small cocktail hour, and then the best meal EVER. And that was it! So simple, so elegant, so awesome. As Gina was getting ready, we started talking about what her and Brad do on vacations, and somehow the conversation turned into what they take pictures of on vacations: lots of signs. Pretty cool. So I decided that we needed to make some signs and take some goofy portraits with them. So her dad chopped up a beer box and made some classy Bride and Groom signs, which we whipped out during a short couples portrait session on the Arrowhead Golf Course in Beaver Cree k. It was hilarious! We even managed to pull off a great American Gothic replica. I...

Canon G9 Review
2007-09-10 23:12:00
I just got Canon ’s new G9, and it rocks! Hooray! I don’t have much to compare this to since I don’t have any other point and shoots — this is my first one since 2001, when I got a 2 megapixel digital Elph — and this is 12 megapixels. But what I am used to is my 1dII and my Canon 5d, of which the latter is a gold standard when it comes to low-noise shooting. My lens collection consists solely of L-series glass — primarily primes — so my standards are way high. Since you’re reading this, you presumably already know everything about the G9. If not, in a nutshell it’s got: An image stabilized lens, equivalent to a 35 to 210 (f/2.8 to f/4.8) 12 megapixel sensor 3 inch LCD display Digic III sensor RAW capture mode The ability to work with remote flashes The last two features are what interested me in this camera. I’ve been looking for a point and shoot that has RAW mode, and all this stuff about the G7 not ‘needing’ R...

Rocky Mountain wedding in Estes Park
2007-08-31 19:26:00
Just finished up with Amy and TJ’s awesome wedding, which took place all over Estes Park — from Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park all the way to Lilly Lake to the Taharaa Lodge. Amy was super psyched to get cool mountain scenery in the background, so I had a lot of fun going to some of the most picturesque areas in my hometown. Fun stuff! I noticed during their wedding that they had an album on their welcoming table that was filled with images of them all over the world. Well, not images of them really, but images they’d taken of their feet. In sand dunes, on beaches, in jungles, etc. etc. Hawaii, Asia, throughout the Rockies, etc. So I figured, hey, I have to get a picture of them taking pictures of their feet at their wedding. Right? I mean, why not? So I took some shots of them taking pictures of their feet, and then I also took pictures of their feet (see below). Congrats, Amy and TJ! It was an honor to be a part of your wedding day!

Uberdorks on the Petit Grepon
2007-08-21 09:30:00
I’m sure anyone who was hiking around Sky Pond a few Mondays ago would have seen me and my buddy Chris halfway up the Petit Grepon looking like a couple of uberdorks. So if you were out there, yep, that was me up there. The guy in the white tightpants. Actually, Chris didn’t look like an uberdork, but he was guilty by association. Here we are: The Petit, in contrast to the two of us, is absolutely not uberdorky. It’s one of the classic climbs in North America, according to a book called, “The 50 Classic Climbs of North America.” Imagine that! You’ll have to excuse the terrible photos I’m going to post — I actually don’t own a modern point-n-shoot, so we dug a 7-year-old relic out of the closet. Anyway, behold! The Petit! Of the two biggest formations, it’s the one on the left that narrows down to a knifeblade toward the summit. So awesome. We hiked up there at 8 pm the night before so we didn’t have to get up at 3 a...

Rocky Mountain National Park Wedding Photos
2007-08-09 01:23:00
I wanted to post a few pics of Paul and Kelly’s wedding, which I shot recently in Rocky Mountain National Park outside my hometown of Estes Park. They had a pretty mellow ceremony and they picked a sweet location in the Alluvial Fan area near Endo Valley. The waterfall behind them was loud, so they rented a small battery-powered PA and put it behind a tiny pine tree. It worked really well. All the guests found seats on the rocks in a small natural amphitheater and listened to one of the most genuine ceremonies I’ve ever heard. It was way cool. Their ring bearer was their beloved dog Spanky, who came up with the rings attached to a carabiner on its collar. Spanky also signed a paw print on the marriage license witness line, which is legal in Colorado. How cool is that?

Toots and a house
2007-08-04 20:56:00
Alicia and I have been kicking around the idea of getting a dog for a while, so we cruised down to the Denver Humane Society and looked around. We almost came home with a neurotic, bug-eyed Boston Terrier named Rader, but instead we brought home a mellower pup who’s part Basenji. The Basenjis — which translate to ‘bush things’ — must be part feline, because they walk, run, play and groom themselves like cats. Pretty cool. We named him Toots because we were listening to a Toots and the Maytals song on the way home (a John Denver cover, actually, but no matter) that went, “Take me home to the place where I belong.” Then, as if to seal the deal, the dog started farting. Or ‘tooting,’ if you will. So Toots became his name. Then when we got back to Estes we drove to our first house! We closed right before we went to the Humane Society! So we’re now in the process of moving, which is becoming an epic, but we’re super excite...

Beaver Creek Wedding Mania
2007-07-25 18:53:00
Had a fun time shooting Noelle and Eric’s wedding in Beaver Cree k. Awesome couple with a totally fun crowd of guests. Lots of artists, musicians, etc in the house, so after I shot the dance floor to death, I pulled out the weirdest trick in the arsenal: the Lensbaby. This strange little lens is basically two pieces of clear plastic stuck together with a flexible vacuum hose. It lets you have selective focus, so you can bend the lens around to focus only on one part of the frame. It gives a really odd effect. One thing I wasn’t expecting was that the DJs lights really brought out all the lens’ imperfections, which is part of its charm, and in some of the shots there’s what appears to be a wrapping of cellophane around the subjects. Check out the pix!

Palo Alto Wedding with a Hawaiian Flair
2007-07-09 12:16:00
Just shot Alex and Jasen’s wedding in Palo Alto , which was really cool. Alex’s family is from Hawaii, so the groomsmen were in Hawaiian shirts and the bride’s maids were in orange floral dresses. Lots of colors, which is a photographic dream. During the ceremony, I was standing at the back of the chapel and a little kid just teetered out of one of the pews and decked in the middle of the aisle. I dropped down and got the hilarious picture below. She laid there for a while watching the ceremony, and then picked herself up and disappeared. Pretty funny. After the ceremony, Alex and Jasen wanted some shots at the Puglas Water Temple, a monument built for the arrival of Hetch Hetchy water in San Francisco. The grounds were closed, so Alex, being the adventurer she is, proceeded to break in. In her wedding dress! Check out the shots. And Alex, Jasen — congrats! Let’s go climbing next time I’m in California!

Engagement photos in Rocky Mountain National Park
2007-07-05 16:59:00
I’ve been neglecting my blog lately! Bad bad bad. But today I decided to update things with a short post. I’m in California right now preparing for a week of photo shoots. 14 corporate head shots, 3 magazine assignments and two weddings. Whoah! I flew in the evening of July 4th, so I managed to see fireworks shows from the airplane from Denver all the way to California. The coolest was flying into San Luis Obispo, where I got to see the fireworks exploding above the thick marine layer that had formed over the ocean. It was amazing watching these bursts illuminate the fog below. Aaaanyway, a few days ago I shot Allison and Ben’s engagement session. We cruised in and out of Rocky Mountain National Park , and along the scenic Highway 7 with their two pups. Came away with some cool stuff. Congrats, you two! I look forward to the wedding!

Aruba wedding photography!
2007-06-10 15:58:00
Just got back from a fantastic weekend wedding in Aruba , where Jen and Scott decided to have a small, intimate wedding with a best friend and close family at the Aruba Marriott. A huge highlight: once they were married, they cruised out into the ocean in their wedding attire and went tubing behind a ski boat. I hung out on the back of of the boat with their kids taking pictures the whole time, and wound up with some awesome shots. Everyone on the other boats in the harbor was super psyched to see them out there, and all the folks in the beach bars were hooting and hollering as we jetted past. Their littlest girl, age 6, freaked out and started crying when the boat driver whipped into a curve and the tube overturned — she thought her mom was going to drown because her wedding dress was so heavy! But once she heard her mom’s uncontrollable laughter, she started laughing too. Anyway, an awesome wedding. Jen, Scott — here’s to you! A big congrats. Here are just...

How to have a green wedding
2007-05-30 14:43:00
I might be buying a home soon, and I’ve been really concerned having one that’s energy-efficient and sustainable. The place that we might make an offer on is way cool, but it’s got some issues such as a lot of enormous single-pane windows. Ideally we’d like to invest in the home to make it more efficient, but we may not be able to afford to do that. So after a little digging, I found out that it might be better for us to buy carbon offsets. We’d essentially donate X amount of money to a nonprofit, and the agency would use that money on projects that reduce the amount of CO2 emissions elsewhere. And the amount we’d pay would offset the amount of carbon emissions we let loose. One project I read about involved hooking long-haul diesel trucks to the electrical grid at truck stops, so they can power their electronic systems each night without having to keep their engines idling. That cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions. I think it’s a pretty c...

Mother of all rope swings
2007-05-24 21:18:00
Here’s a crazy shot I just came across while organizing my Web site. I shot a Montana wedding last summer at the Holland Lake Lodge, which is on Holland Lake outside of Missoula. Really cool place, really beautiful setting. The lodge is on a tiny little peninsula jutting out into this serene, gorgeous lake. Check out the portfolio link to see what it was like. Highly highly recommended place to get married. Anyway, the wedding was one those really fun weekend-long things. During the weekend, everyone discovered the mother of all rope swings. I got a bunch of rad shots of everyone on it, and here’s a shot that someone took of me on it… I know, I was working and playing. Sorry! Don’t tell anyone. I think I was about 35 or 40 feet up in the air.

Spire Banner!
2007-05-24 11:44:00
So I do a lot of outdoor sports and adventure photography when I’m not shooting weddings, and one of my clients is Spire USA, makers of probably the best laptop bags on the planet — so I have to do a little plug for them on my blog. They rock. I’m an avid Apple user, and they make little laptop sleeves that fit my Macbook perfectly so it’s protected when I’m on location. Anyway, here’s a cool shot that Cory Barnes, the company’s president, sent me the other day. It’s a shot I took in Bishop that was turned into a huge banner at an industry trade show. Way cool! And if you’re looking for great bag for your laptop, you know where to go. Oh yeah — the camera I used for this shot is the same one I use at weddings, so if you ever wanted to make a huge banner of your wedding ceremony for something, you know it’s possible
