Raymond Legaspi 'Does the Tango' at Ayala Museum March 25 Exhibit: Ten ques
2008-03-19 08:01:00
Raymond Legaspi 'Does the Tango ' is a one-man-show slated for the Ayala Museum from March 25 to April 7 of 2008, his third one-man show and the second in Ayala Museum. This is very fast progress for one who had dedicated 20 years of his professional life as a multi-awarded advertising creative director and has just very recently returned to his hometown and to his art. Travel with me as I interviewed him just before his Ayala Museum exhibit opening and not only to preview the arwork but to know the Artist up close:1. What got you started in doing Art?I have been an artist ever since I could remember. If only I could still find my school text books it would always be with drawings in it. But in college I took up fine arts and majored in advertising in UST. After that, I trained in Seattle in graphic design, illustration and photo retouching. Then nearly 20 years I worked as an Art and Creative Director for 3 multinational Ad agencies in Manila. In those years, painting after work o...

Will Ramielle Malubay stay on top 5 of American Idol season 7 ?
2008-03-19 06:50:00
March 18, 2008 Hollywood: Filipino-American Ramiele Malubay performed “I Should Have Known Better” on American Idol Top 11. "I Should Have Known Better" is a song composed by John Lennon(credited to Lennon/McCartney), and originally released by The Beatles on the United Kingdom-version of A Hard Day's Night, their soundtrack for the film of the same name.Ramiele Malubay is still the most popular girl in the competition in terms of cuteness and likability so that still works in her favor. However, there is a possibility of Ramiele Malubay getting hammered by the judges in the early rounds, with her hopefully surviving intact. She’s obviously the neophyte (similar to David Hernandez) among all the “veterans” (or professionals?) on the show, so American Idol will use that for all its worth. Plus, Ramiele Malubay crying in the sidelines every single elimination show is priceless. They can’t get rid of her early, but they are going to make her cry her eyes out week after week...

Disconnecting the Wack Wack Connection
2008-03-18 05:18:00
PerryScope: by Perry DiazWith the recent brouhaha over the ZTE-NBE and other corruption scandals involving the First Family and their business cronies -- the "oligarchs," according to Romulo Neri -- the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club had been, or may still be, the place for the "players" to play a real life game of "Monopoly." Indeed, the place could be aptly called "Wack Wack Gold Counting Club." In the midst of all these scandals was former COMELEC Chairman Benjamin Abalos, a slick operator who was tagged as the man in middle -- the conduit -- of all these questionable multi-million dollar transactions. Founded in 1930, Wack Wack Golf and Country Club has been the place to be for the rich and the famous. Named after the "uwak" (crow), Wack Wack has become synonymous with power and influence; that is, political power and influence peddling. The ZTE-NBN scandal has brought Wack Wack to the limelight. It was the venue for a series of rendezvous involving Philippine government offici...

Telltale Signs/ The Saga of Flor and Jennifer
2008-03-17 17:22:00
Telltale Signs / The Saga of Flor and Jennifer Rodel E. Rodis, March 17, 2008March 17, 1995 will be mournfully remembered as the day when Singapore executed Filipino domestic worker Flor Contemplacion for allegedly murdering Filipina domestic worker, Delia Maga. Filipinos recall that just before the date of her execution, two witnesses came forward with evidence that Contemplacion was innocent and that it was Maga’s employer who strangled her in a fit of rage after finding his 4-year old epileptic son accidentally drowned in the bath tub because Maga had left him alone, unaware of his condition. Although Contemplacion, the 42-year old mother of four, had neither the motive, means or opportunity to kill Maga, Singapore police nonetheless made her the sole murder suspect and convicted her based on her torture-induced confession. The authorities refused to consider any new evidence that might contradict their convenient wrap-up of the case. When Contemplacion’s coffin arrived in Man...
Hoopla from Manila, Grand Reunion of PBA Greats
2008-03-17 15:04:00
March 15 2008. Cal State Dominguez is a sprawling university in Dominguez Hills, Carson city, Southern California. Right off the 91 freeway and relatively close to the Pacific ocean, the gymnasium in this school was the site for the 1st Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Grand Reunion tour in the USA.The PBA Legends USA Foundation is the brain child of Abe King Jr(CEO), backed up by powerful help from Rey Santos (VP), Rufino Ignacio (Secty/Treas) and other fellow cagers like Senator Bobby Jaworski. These men of vision saw the potential of uniting the global Filipino and helping the less fortunate thru their passion which is basketball. The main objective of this unity is to raise funds for educational needs via scholarships, donate computers, provide medical/dental missions for the less fortunate Filipinos in the homeland. Another goal would be to assist the hard up PBA players (past and present) who have fallen to hard times.Abe King Jr is a big man with a giant heart. He curr...

Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao Defeats Marquez at Mandalay Bay Las Vegas
2008-03-16 08:19:00
This was a close fight with Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao winning over Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez by a split decision. Pacquiao earned 115 points over 112 of Marquez. The much awaited boxing rematch of Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez, The Unfinished Business, their unfinished business is finally “finished”. It was worth the wait. Pacquiao won by only 3 points, a small margin, but a victory nonetheless.115 points points for Pacquiao versus 112 points for Marquez by a split decision. What helped Pacquiao win the title was that he knocked down Marquez down to the mat on the third round. Because by the twelfth round, Pacquiao was visibly weaker and had a hard time deflecting the punches of Marquez. In a later interview, Marquez felt that he was cheated out of the crown just because of that momentary lapse in the third round. Too bad for Marquez, the points given to PacMan for that knockdown made up for the punches that Marquez connected.source:...

2008-03-12 07:17:00
The Journey concert with new lead singer Arnel Pineda at the Planet Hollywood Las Vegas last March 8, 2008 was packed and all the reviews speak of all attendees having a wonderful evening. Arnel was on fire and his stage presence was described as magnificent. The band debuted three new songs from their upcoming new album which will be titled "Revelations", which they announced will come out in June exclusively through Wal*Mart. It will consist of a disc of new songs, a disc of the greatest hits, and a DVD of the Las Vegas concert. "Wildest Dreams" is a rocker, "Through All These Years" is the ballad penned by the incredible Jonathan Cain, "Never Walk Away" is an uptempo song vaguely reminiscent of "Be Good To Yourself". The latter was penned by Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, and Jeremey Hunsicker during Jeremey's audition for the lead singer slot last June. Jeremey is the lead singer of Journey tribute band, Frontiers, and was considered a favourite for the lead singer position at one ...

American Idol Ramielle Malubay's racy facebook picture creates a stir
2008-03-11 04:18:00
Ramielle Malubay's profile photo on Myspace.ComHollywood: Ramielle Malubay's racy playful photo on facebook created quite a stir among Hollywood star watchers recently. The slightly scandalous photo of herself and two of her girlfriends on the internet posted on Face Book and now other websites are drawing thousands of views and media attention to it!The American Idol contestant, and one of Simon's few top picks remains a very strong contender for the Idol title. Actually the controversial picture looks just like typical teenage stuff girls do on friendster, myspace and facebook; nothing out of the ordinary. This whole thing is sad that people make small things seem like big scandals, but seriously, Ramielle is a talented singer and deserves to be respected as such and have a good chance of being American Idol!Judge for yourself. Here is the controversial photo:

Martin Nievera with his Visionary Award after meeting the members of media at Kodak Theatre 's press room. Photo by Jay Fermin ppp-usaHollywood: Covering celebrity events tend to lead into some interesting twist and turns. I can still remember covering the 2006 (Donald Trump's) Miss Universe held at The Shrine Auditorium here in Los Angeles with the world-wide media from print and broadcast. Distant recollection of being cornered and restrained by ACCESS HOLLYWOOD still lingers fresh on how 'Show Production' collides and limit other media access to the event and celebrities. ACCESS HOLLYWOOD literary herded the members of media from across the world like, hmmmm, cattle. The 1st Annual Filipino-American Visionary Awards held Friday, March 7, 2008 at the prestigious (Oscar award venue) Kodak Theatre in Hollywood was like a bad dream from two years ago coming back to haunt the media: No sound feed at the Press Room, thirsty and well starved members of the press (inspite of an in-hou...

Executive Order 464 Scrapped but not 'Executive Privilege'
2008-03-06 14:00:00
Today the talk will be about the controversial Executive Order 464 being revoked and the real truth regarding 'Executive Privelege'. From what I gather, EO 464 is nothing but a reminder that Executive Privilege still exists. And certain sections were struck down by The Supreme Court because it was against The Constitution. ELECTION lawyer Romulo Macalintal said scrapping Executive Order (EO) 464 would be futile as the executive privilege of a president is embedded in the 1987 Constitution. EO 464 was issued by Malacañang on September 26, 2005 following the appearance of National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales in a Senate inquiry that ended in his being detained and held in contempt after refusing to answer some of the queries of the senators.PCIJ has a great blog post (and podcast) today regarding the scrapping of EO 464 which I found enlightening, they “asked three lawyers — Theodore Te of the Free Legal Assistance Group; former UP College of Law Dean Raul Pangalangan, a...

Below is the printed page take on the scrapping of EO 464:Arroyo revokes EO 464, keeps privilegeMANILA -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Wednesday revoked Executive Order (EO) 464 prohibiting government officials from attending congressional inquiries. At the same time, however, her chief legal counsel Sergio Apostol pointed out that President Arroyo retains the right of executive privilege, since that is guaranteed by the Constitution. The decision was reached after Arroyo and several Cabinet officials led by Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita met with representatives of an "influential religious group" including some Catholic bishops at the Discovery Suites in Ortigas, Pasig City. "I am revoking EO 464. Executive officials may no longer invoke EO 464 to excuse non-attendance from legislative inquiries. Executive officials are instructed to abide by the Constitution, existing laws, and jurisprudence when invited to legislative inquiries," Arroyo said. The Catholic Bishops' C...

INSTANCES WHEN EO 464 WAS INVOKEDHello Garci Hearings at the SenateMalacanang invoked Executive Order No. 464 in refusing to cooperate with the investigation of the revived “Hello Garci" tapes controversy by the Senate committee of the whole. The Senate invited AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Generoso Senga and six other officers, including Gudani and Balutan, to the September 28, 2005 hearing. Senga initially informed the Senate that he cannot attend due to a scheduled meeting but would send the other officers. Later, he reasoned that there were ongoing operations, so he could not attend. But on the morning of September 28, half an hour before the hearing, another letter citing EO 464 was sent to the Senate, instructing the officers not to attend any hearing in Congress without the President's written permission. Gudani and Balutan testified that the Commission on Elections, aided by other top military officials, maneuvered to "slacken" security in Lanao del Sur, therefore allowing massi...

PerryScope: Gloria's "Omerta"
2008-03-05 02:01:00
by Perry DiazOn September 26, 2005, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo issued Executive Order 464 which prevented members of the cabinet, police and military generals, senior national security officials, and "such other officers as may be determined by the President" from attending congressional hearings unless approved by the President. Arroyo issued EO 464 when two military officers appeared before the Senate Committee on National Defense to testify during the investigation of the "Hello Garci" election cheating scandal. With a single stroke of the pen, Arroyo imposed a "code of silence" in her administration. And like the Mafia's "Omerta," EO 464 made sure that what happens in Malacanang stays in Malacanang. So far, nobody dared to break Gloria's "Omerta," except Rodolfo "Jun" Lozada. When Joey de Venecia III exposed the ZTE-NBN deal, he implicated Romulo Neri -- then the Director of NEDA -- for recommending approval of the overpriced $329 million deal. However, Neri said in his ...

Rodel E. Rodis, March 3, 2008President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (GMA) had been considered a loyal ally of the United States until July of 2004 when she “caved in” to the Iraqi hostage-takers’ demands to withdraw the Philippine government’s 51 soldiers and police officers from Iraq a month early, in exchange for the release of Filipino hostage Angelo De La Cruz. In directing the Philippines to be the 5th country to withdraw from the US-led “Coalition of the Willing” (after Spain, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Honduras) in 2004, GMA incurred the wrath of the US government which retaliated by reducing US military and economic aid and limiting loan assistance from US financial institutions. Prior to that date, the Philippines had shown its loyalty to the US by rallying the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to deal as one bloc to push China out of the Spratley Islands in the South China Sea, where four ASEAN allies and China hold competing claims. The Philippi...

She lost 110 pounds and found a passion: running
2008-03-03 15:56:00
March 1, 2008Five years ago, climbing a flight of stairs was a challenge for Rosemarie Hernandez Jeanpierre. She was 5 feet 2 and weighed 220 pounds. On Sunday, the 43-year-old nurse -- now half the woman she used to be -- will try to break four hours in the Los Angeles Marathon, and burnish an impressive racing pedigree. It's a long shot that would mean cutting almost an hour off her fastest marathon time. But odds mean nothing to a woman once considered morbidly obese, who shed 110 pounds and worked her way into the city's amateur running elite. Or, as she told me again and again -- in a voice reflecting her own amazement -- "Never in my wildest imagination did I believe I would be able to become an athlete."I wanted to meet her because I was intrigued by her story. No Jenny Craig or LipoZap; no Lap-Band surgery or boot-camp training. Just daily vigilance and exercise -- healthful food, small portions and hours spent running and working out until 100 pounds fell off. All immeasu...

Fools and Fears
2008-03-02 06:37:00
by H.JuegoPhilippinesFear stinks the most when you hide it all the more. In Gloria's case, one cannot feign fear by seeking refuge among armed military men, mistaking it for a more courageous act when it spews fumes of an abominable stench. At the height of the Makati Interfaith Rally, Gloria and some of her cabinet officials flocked to Camp Crame in what seemed to be a desperate attempt to secure the loyalty of General Esperon and Police Chief Razon. At the most, it's a politically immature move, if not the retarded type. At the very least, Gloria's bandwagon has become more like a bunch of defenseless juveniles imploring the aid of a force they knew could topple them down quite easily and mercilessly with a single blow. And this has become Gloria's strategy, quite apart from fruitfully rewarding the governors and mayors who grovel before her like a wandering money dispenser.Hours before the Makati protest, the police barricaded J. P. Laurel street, the path that leads to Malac...

Roxas To GMA: Truth Or Consequence; Makati Rally Today Only A Sign Of Count
2008-03-01 07:53:00
29 February 2008 Senator Mar Roxas warned President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo that her government's continued stonewalling of the truth and obstruction of justice will soon break the nation apart. The Liberal Party President said the Chief Executive should view today's Makati rally as a fair consequence of her administration's failure to come clean on the ZTE-National Broadband Network (NBN) controversy. "Ang hamon ngayon, Ginang Pangulo: ‘truth or consequence.' Huwag maging balakid sa katotohanan, kung hindi, patuloy na aapaw ang galit ng tao sa lansangan," he said. "In case you haven't noticed, Mrs. President, the people are angry. They are very, very angry. And if you continue to turn a blind eye to this and sing your chorus that everything's above board, then your so-called ‘Strong Republic' will just break apart into 86 million pieces," he added. The co-chairman of the Joint Senate Committees investigating the NBN deal said the President must act to "save the Republic"...
