Independents: The Swing Vote in 2008
2008-02-05 03:08:00
PerryScope: Perry DiazRecently, the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) released its study, "California's Independent Vote rs" which showed that between the 1988 and 2004 presidential elections, "decline to state" -- or independent -- registration doubled from 9% to 17.7%. Conversely, Democratic registration for the same period fell from 50.4% to 43% and Republican registration fell from 38.6% to 34.7%. In terms of actual numbers, Democratic registration shrunk from 7.1 million in 1988 to 6.6 million today while Republican registration shrunk from 5.4 million to 5.2 million. On the other hand, the independents have grown from 1.3 million in 1988 to 3 million today and their share of the electorate has increased to 19.3% -- that's one out of five California voters. The PPIC survey showed that independents are politically "flexible." They can either vote Republican or Democrat. It also showed that 39% of independents considered themselves politically moderate while 31% consid...

Eli Manning threw two touchdown passes for the Giants, including a 13-yard toss to Plaxico Burress with 35 seconds remaining in the National Football League's championship game winning the Super bowl. Los Angeles: Disneyland is making preparations for Monday, February 4, 2008 for the "What's Next" athlete from Super bowl XLII that will participate in a series of events at Disneyland Park from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. including a parade with local Pop Warner football players and various activities in Disneyland Dream Suite, an in-park apartment originally designed for Walt Disney himself. It is on top of Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Bloggers Rate the Super Bowl Ads at $2.4 Million a Pop
2008-02-04 01:23:00
Internet research companies plan to measure the "watercooler effect" of Super Bowl XXXIX ads by capturing sentiments as they bubble up within the loose collection of diarylike personal Web sites collectively known as the "blogosphere." Here's one of my favorites:Cincinnati-based Intelliseek, for one, plans to monitor positive and negative commentary about commercials in more than 3.5 million blogs, charging advertisers upward of $20,000 for its intelligence. That's about 1 percent of the $2.4 million price tag for a 30-second spot during the game this year, up from $2.3 million last year.Such research could eventually offer real-time assessment and feedback on the reception and success of ad campaigns, industry experts said, and extend the influence of an upstart medium that has already placed its mark on mainstream news publishers and broadcasters."Blogs are a real-world temperature gauge as to what's really going on out there," said Tim Hanlon, senior vice president at advertis...

The Davos Question: How can you make the world a better place in 2008?
2008-02-02 21:48:00
Every year, for the past 37 years, leaders of government, companies, as well as wealthy individuals from Europe, the Americas, and Asia come together to the resort town of Davos, Switzerland. It is called the World Economic Forum (WEF), a Geneva-based foundation whose annual meeting of top business leaders, national political leaders (presidents, prime ministers and others), and selected intellectuals and journalists meeet and try to discuss the current world economic concerns. From January 23-27, 2008, these individuals hammered on this year's Davos question: What one thing do you think that countries, companies, or individuals must do to make the world a better place in 2008? The 11 sessions of Davos were held in a bunkerlike conference center, with no view of the surrounding beautiful mountains and the conference of the world's top achievers focused on global uncertainties, both economic and political. For the first time however, participants not only included corporate executi...

Ramiele Malubay the next Jasmine Trias ?
2008-02-02 03:23:00
Fil-am, Ramiele Malubay, is aspiring to become the first Asian-American Idol. The 4′11″ tall Ramiele, a Filipina sushi waitress from Florida, is a big fan of season 3’s 3rd placer Jasmine Trias. She performed “Natural Woman” as her audition piece in Miami and got the nods from Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul. She is going to Hollywood for American Idol.Every year, leakage on who will make it to the finals of the no. 1 tv show on Earth, American Idol (of course), proliferates on the internet from various blogs and message boards even before the announcement episode airs on television. The accuracy of this list is very high, about 90 to 100%. This year is no exception. There are even photos (with the help of paparazzis) proving that the rumors are true. Camera crew spotted 16 finalists who are allegedly from the Top 24 video shoot of Ford tv spot. RAMIELLE MALUBAY also made it to the top 24 of twelve Boys and twelve Girls so far:Top 12 girls:1.) kady malloy2.) carly hennessy s...

Election Watch: The Unfamiliar World of Politics
2008-01-31 02:39:00
Los Angeles: There are two kinds of elections in the United States; general and primary. A general election is used to fill an elective office. A primary election is used to select a party's candidates for an elective office. Tonight the GOP Republican Presidential hopefuls will face off in a debate at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley with CNN's Anderson Cooper moderating. This debate follows Arizona Senator John McCain's tuesday night win in the Florida primary and the fallout of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani from the race. You probably knew about this in the mainstream media. However, I will not dwell on these statistics and Election chatter as we near Super Tuesday (after SuperBowl Sunday) next week's multi-state primaries wherein 17 states including California and New York will be voting for their presidential nominees. What this means is during the SuperBowl telecast, be prepared for a bombardment of political endorsements priced at $2.6 million for a 30 second TV spo...

CHARMAINE CLAMORFlippin’ Out (Freeham)Jazz Times February 2008 IssueThat Filipino-American singer Charmaine Clamor is as drop-dead gorgeous as Nancy Wilson or Lena Horne is a nice bonus, but is beside the point. What really matters is that Clamor vocally resembles an amalgam of Wilson and Horne, a sumptuously elegant blend of silk and satin, trimmed with gutsy self-possession. It’s a sound that generated plenty of attention when, three years ago, she served up a delectable assortment of standards on her debut disc, Searching for the Soul. Now, with the release of Flippin’ Out, Clamor has moved a giant step forward, crafting an entirely new musical form; a hybrid of American jazz and Filipino folk music dubbed “jazzipino” (a term the album’s title anagrammatically toys with). Working alongside Tierney Sutton’s top-drawer trio—pianist Christian Jacob, bassist Trey Harris and drummer Ray Brinker—Clamor the inventive torch-bearer is still present with a rich, creamy co...

The Art of Crying

PerryScope: Perry DiazAfter her loss to Barack Obama in Iowa, Hillary Clinton, who was stumping in New Hampshire for the first-in-the nation primary, was in a coffee shop taking questions from a group of women when someone asked her, "My question is very personal, how do you do it? How do you keep upbeat and so wonderful?" Surprised at the nature of the question, Clinton was taken aback but she regained her poise and responded, jokingly, "You know, I think, well luckily, on special days I do have help. If you see me every day and if you look on some of the Web sites and listen to some of the commentators they always find me on the day I didn't have help. It's not easy." Then she got emotional and said, "It's not easy, and I couldn't do it if I didn't passionately believe it was the right thing to do. You know, I have so many opportunities from this country, just don't want to see us fall backwards." And with quivering voice and tears in her eyes, she said, "You know, this is v...

Keeping Our Economy Moving Forward
2008-01-29 02:03:00
Economic uncertainty is gripping Americans from coast to coast. The stock market has been volatile and the housing market is undeniably in a serious slow down. After eight years of tremendous trials ranging from a terrorist attack to corporate scandals to natural disasters, our economy has weathered a great deal. While I believe we have a solid economic foundation, it’s imperative that we address the areas that need the most attention to shore things up.Congress and the President are working together in a bipartisan way to create a temporary economic growth package that will have maximum impact, while avoiding long term tax increases. Because we have seen that targeted tax relief can have a stimulative impact, I believe any package should include such relief. This could mean tax incentives for businesses that would help hire more workers, or temporary rebates that would encourage economic activity. On the housing front, we need to do what we can to help struggling homeowners...
