Search Wikia Makes Its Debut
2008-01-19 18:35:00
The new dashboard search box of Wikia .com. Is is an open source search engine and results are known as "wikis."Used to be, back in the 90's, that every other week a new search engine was announced. Many of them were aggregating other search results then parsing them out, so you shouldn't count those. Especially since they were often created by university students who were querying other university student web search sites. Then they got a little more serious and you would choose from the Altavistas and the Excites. The University of Washington had a nice little web search project from one of its grad students, Brian Pinkerton, by the name of Webcrawler. It ended up getting bought by AOL.Then Yahoo struck and made its mark. Then Google struck and made its mark. MSN is out there as well. All continue to try and improve their technology. Yahoo recently debuted some predictive hint features in its drop down box with topic suggestions, and Google just announced its intent to search for ...

Mischievous 'Filipino Monkey' could have triggered World War III?
2008-01-17 05:35:00
Image released by the US Navy purportedly showing an Iranian vessel racing near the wake of the USS Hopper in the Persian Gulf. Photograph: AP A heckling radio ham known as the "Filipino Monkey ", who has spent years pestering ships in the Persian Gulf, is being blamed today for sparking a major diplomatic row after American warships almost attacked Iranian patrol boats. The US navy came within seconds of firing at the Iranian speedboats in the Strait of Hormuz on January 6 after hearing threats that the boats were attacking and were about to explode.Senior navy officials have admitted that the source of the threats, picked up in international waters, was a mystery. And now the US navy's journal, Navy Times, has claimed that the threats, which were broadcast last week by the Pentagon, are thought to have come from an infamous radio prankster. It said the Filipino Monkey, who could be more than one person, listens to ship-to-ship radio traffic and then interrupts, usually with abusive ...

Rodel E. Excerpts from interview with political blogger Dean Jorge BocoboMornings@ANC, January 7, 2008Host: Ricky CarandangRicky: Iowa is a small state. But it is all that significant?Dean: Iowa is important for people who aren't very well known... no track record. Iowa can be an introduction to the nation, and I think that Barack Obama has certainly done that.Ricky: Donors begin opening their pockets more aggressively.Dean: That's right, since Iowa, both Obama and [John] Edwards have made significant gains in their contribution. Ricky: New Hampshire is a smaller state...Dean: It's a little bit like Batanes islands. But New Hampshire is an important state, because it's the first real primaries. If you win twice in a row, or lose twice in a row. There's momentum down and up.Ricky: It looks as if Obama is set to win New Hampshire. Clinton is the establishment candidate. She can bounce back?Dean: She certainly can, and she shows a lot of strength. But what happened in Iowa, the decision ax...

Hearts Thru the Internet
2008-01-14 04:55:00
Times were when a single person had to go to parties or clubs to meet potential soul mates. Those were the days (and nights) when the individual got all dressed and psyched up to attend an event or meet a date. Even with all that preparation, chances are that you would not meet that special someone. Either the other person was not your type or did not meet up to your expectations. The introduction of the computer and those single websites have opened up a new dimension on how to meet that other person you want in your life. It is an efficient way of meeting tons of new people all over the world thus expanding the collection in that process of collecting and selecting.Logging into a website looking for a potential mate seems to be what single people are into nowadays. I don’t blame them. The price of transportation and bar drinks have really gone up. The majority would rather be in the safety of their homes logged into the internet thus saving all that cash. You then go out on a dat...

The Politics of Change
2008-01-14 04:41:00
The 2008 presidential election could turn out to be the most interesting election since Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860. Lincoln's famous quote on "change" was: "The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew." Isn't there a distinct similarity to what some of today's presidential candidates are saying? Today, "change" has become the buzzword in the presidential election. But "change" in itself is meaningless without knowing what the candidates would do to effect change. One of the issues that is now at the forefront of debate is change in the immigration law. Attempts have been made by Congress in the past three years to change -- or reform -- the immigration law but failed due to the issue of illegal immigration which is expected to become the hot-button issue in the election. When the 2008 primary season was kicked off i...

PROFILES ENCOURAGE
2008-01-14 00:53:00
by Rodel E. Rodis: Telltale SignsThe New Year began with the depressing news that deposed President Joseph Estrada was mulling a run for the presidency in 2010 if, he said, “the opposition fails to come to an agreement on a common candidate.” To ensure the opposition’s victory in 2010, he said he would willingly agree to be the unity candidate. How magnanimous. This news story drove me nuts. Is the Philippine political system so bankrupt and lacking in leaders with moral scruples that a convicted plunderer like Estrada could actually be elected again? My faith in the Filipino people was redeemed on January 5 when I attended a forum at the San Francisco Public Library and heard Quentin Pastrana, a recent MBA graduate from Georgetown University, speak about his new book, “Profil es Encourage: Ordinary Filipinos Making an Extraordinary Difference” (anvilpublishing.com). Profiles is about ordinary Filipinos who can and should be candidates for the presidency of the Philippines, ...

"Stars" Shine in Pampanga
2008-01-08 04:05:00
Amidst the gloom and doom in Pampanga , two heroes have emerged to fight the forces of evil. One was Governor "Among Ed" Panlilio who had beaten two political giants in one of the biggest -- if not the biggest -- upsets in the 2007 elections. During the campaign, he pledged to stop corruption and crush jueteng. Within five months, "Among Ed" stopped corruption in the quarry industry. Jueteng, however, was a different story. The forces behind jueteng are politically entrenched and it would be a monumental undertaking to stop them. However, it can be done. Last September 2007, the Pampanga Mayors League filed a measure with the provincial board that would transfer the authority to monitor the extraction and payment of quarry fees from the provincial government to the mayors of the seven "lahar" quarry towns. Over the protest of Among Ed, the provincial board unanimously approved the measure which Among Ed claimed was unconstitutional and illegal. Recently, Among Ed indicated that he re...

The Kulit Syndrome
2008-01-07 06:35:00
In the Philippines there is this phrase which describes a personality synonymous to being persistent, not taking no for an answer, and a pit bull’s dogged pursuit in getting what you want. It is called being “kulit”. No one really knows where this Tagalog word originated from. But everyone in the islands know what it means. The younger Filipinos regularly use this word to describe themselves while the older generation has learned to accept it. Filipinos take pride in having this trait. It identifies them to being able to get what they set their eyes on. Like a used car salesman, a kulit person will not take no for an answer. They will try the frontal assault and if that doesn’t work in getting what they want, they sneak around the corner in a sideways sweeping motion hoping to scoop up that objective of theirs. If that does not work, they will resort to drama like tears and act like their feelings have been hurt. Almost like an onslaught of rain and/or fire towards the person...

US Economy seen weighing on Manila Shares
2008-01-06 19:47:00
MANILA: Mounting concern about the future of the US economy will likely weigh down Philippine share prices in the coming week, dealers said Friday.“The outlook of the analysts are all bleak,” said Claire Quiray of Accord Capital Equities.“Domestically, at home, we are still expecting our economic figures to be rosy but like it or not, we are still affected by the United States. The lack of confidence (in the US) of most investors in general will prevail.”“Generally, investors here are more concerned about the economy in the United States and its impact on our country and on other regions,” she said.Francisco Liboro of PCCI Securities added: “The market will continue to trade cautiously and take its cue from US equities. A weaker US economy is seen to eventually crimp the country’s own economic growth.” However some dealers said the recent downturns in the market may be seen as an opportunity for bargain buys.“The valuation of stocks is attractive after recent dec...

Commentary: On Ken Burns’ “The War “

Source: National Archives (111-SC-263686) Los Angeles– On December 7,2007 was the 66th anniversary of the Second World War for the United States. It is just fitting and proper that a TV documentary series by Ken Burn s, The War- was made for this event.December 7 was called ” the day that will live in infamy “by president Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was the day the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. TheJapanese surprise attack crippled the US Asiatic fleet and almost decimated the American fleet in the Pacific. The attack on Pearl Harbor gained relevance today because it is compared to the attack on 9/11 Twin Towers. Actors 'to boycott Golden Globes' for 'Solidarity and Support'
2008-01-05 23:09:00
Actors' support for the protest will be solid, the union says. The Screen Actors' Guild, the union which represents Hollywood actors, says its members will boycott next weekend's Golden Globe Awards in the US. Union president Alan Rosenberg said there was "unanimous agreement" not to cross picket lines set up by writers who are on strike over royalties. The Golden Globes , awarded to actors in television and film, are second in prestige only to the Oscars. Without top actors present, TV networks may not bother to screen the event. It is difficult to imagine a ceremony honouring excellence in film-making, without actors there to accept the awards, says the BBC's Peter Bowes in Los Angeles. 'Solidarity and support' "After considerable outreach to Golden Globe actor nominees and their representatives over the past several weeks, there appears to be unanimous agreement that these actors will not cross WGA (Writers' Guild of America) picket lines," Mr Rosenberg said. However, the ...

Rose Parade 2009 Tickets On Sale February 1
2008-01-05 22:46:00
PASADENA - Ahead of the expected weekend rainstorms, crews worked Friday to continue dismantling the bleachers dotting the 5.5-mile Rose Parade route. The process of taking down the stands - which hold more than 70,000 spectators - starts right after the parade ends, beginning with the seating across Colorado and Orange Grove boulevards. It all takes about two weeks, said Sindee Riboli, president of Sharp Seating Co., the family business providing Rose Parade seating for more than 70 years. "I've been running the business for 23 years, but I'll never say I know it all," Riboli said. "There's always something unexpected. Silly little things - like somebody changed the locks on the portable toilets," she said, laughing. "There (are) always little issues, people in the wrong area, or who can't find parking - I feel this time of year I really earn my money." Still, Riboli said, this year's event went smoothly, considering how much is involved in "putting together an event as huge a...
