Success M1530
2008-04-18 18:54:00 Just got all of my hardware working on my new laptop under KUbuntu, fingerprint reader logins, Webcam, sound, media buttons, remote control, microphone everything. Also stopped the dreaded media button from overwriting Grub everytime it’s pressed. I am disappointed that the sepakers and the microphone on the laptop are such terrible quality, especially for a “multimedia” laptop. I’ll post the steps I took to get everything working as soon as possible. But when KUbuntu comes out in a few days with KDE4 I don’t know how much will be relevant. Maybe I’ll just wait until then. New Laptop
2008-04-09 23:39:00 Got my new laptop today! A very shiny Dell XPS M1530. It looks good so far. Click here for a good look at it. It came with Vista (yuck) pre-installed. Seems wicked fast so far. The only thing I am still trying to get the hand of is the finger print reader. It doesn’t like me. Oh and it has no modem so when I am back in Millstreet it looks like surfing the net is out of the questions. I think I am going to leave Vista on a partition so I can play games and maybe use some of the Media Centre functions but as all of my Music and Videos are going to be in a soon to be install KUbuntu partition I don’t know how useful that is going to be. Maybe there is a way Vista can read ext3 so I can use them. We’ll see. I am going to install KUbuntu on it soon and I’ll update the blog with any issues I have in the hope it may help someone else. ESX - Find large files in the Service Console
2008-04-09 10:58:00 Got a few cases in work over the last few week where people are finding the root file system full in VMware ESX Server. This causes lots of issues with connectivity to VirtualCenter etc. The problem is that often it is difficult to find the large files that are causing the file system to fill up. I’ve been sending people this handy little script to help them so I thought I’d share it with everyone. find / -path '/vmfs/*' -prune -o -size +10240000c -exec du -h {} ; This searches the ESX ignoring the VMFS file system. For standard Linux you can put whatever you want in place of VMFS and it will ignore that folder. More About: Service , Find , Console , Files , Large

The Joe Pesci of Hurling retires
2008-04-01 09:03:00 Davy Fitz is after retiring. I must say I really liked him, being of small stature myself he really was inspirational. He was one of the few short ‘keepers. He was well able to have a laugh with the fans on the terrace during any matches I was at. And he got a tirade of abuse from the Cork fans. But he’d always have a wry smile and would often acknowledge the crowd if he made a mistake. Legend. The game of hurling will be a lot duller without him and his runs out of the tunnel to his goalmouth, followed by his patented smacking of his hurley off the crossbar. We’ll miss you in Cork anyway Davy. More About: Hurling , Joe Pesci , Pesci
Banners at Matches
2008-03-27 20:56:00 I’m off to see Munster and Connacht tomorrow in Galway in the Magners League. Going to be my first time at a Rugby Union match. Looking forward to it, but perhaps not the drive up. I alway sseem to be in a rush driving to Galway. I hope they are handing out those little red Munster flags although I think they only do that when playing at home. Here is a pic of a great sign at a game. More About: Matches , Banners
You know you are from Kerry when…..

Stress Relief
2008-03-25 10:36:00 Most people are aware of the fact physical activity can reduce stress but an article in the Irish Independent today contained a passage that explains better than I have seen elsewhere. “If, by around 4pm, it feels as if a stressful day at work has turned your brain to blancmange, it might not only be down to overwork or a shortage of double espressos. We respond to stress in the same way our ancestors did – by adopting a “fight or flight” response. Adrenalin and other hormones are released into our bloodstreams and our muscles are primed for response. The problem is that, these days, stress is more likely to be brought on by a tricky PowerPoint presentation or a job interview than an attack by marauding lions, so the toxins that build up for a physical response have no outlet. The results can be good; the cardiovascular system is accelerated and we can work harder (for a while, at least), but others are not so good; stress slows down... More About: Stress , Relief
Irish Archaeology
2008-01-30 10:16:00 After having dug to a depth of 10 metres last year, Scottish scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago. Not to be outdone by the Scots, in the weeks that followed, English scientists dug to a depth of 20 metres, and shortly after, headlines in the English newspapers read: ‘English archaeologists have found traces of 200 year old copper wire and have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network a hundred years earlier than the Scots.’ One week later, ‘The Kerryman,’ a southwest Irish newsletter, reported the following: ‘After digging as deep as 30 metres in peat bog near Tralee, Paddy O’Droll, a self taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing. Paddy has therefore concluded that 300 ... More About: Archaeology

Dwarves hidden in sports bags rob Swedish bus passengers
2008-01-25 14:39:00 Read this story in The Register today. “Swedish police are quizzing “people of limited stature” with criminal records following a spate of robberies from the cargo holds of coaches - possibly carried out by dwarves smuggled onboard in sports bags. According to the Sun, the gang responsible pack their vertically-challenged accomplices into bags and stick them in with other passengers’ luggage. The undercover operatives then rifle the hold for valuables before resealing themselves in their hiding place, to be extracted later by another gang member at the coach’s final destination. National coach operator Swebus confirmed it’d been hit by the audacious criminals, who have over the last few months has lifted “thousands of pounds” in cash, jewellery and other valuables. The company’s sales manager, Ingvar Ryggasjo, said that one short person had been put aboard a coach in a hockey bag. A female passenger said she’d seen some men... Hidden Camera Mirror Gag
2008-01-11 19:04:00 I found this over in Brimurs’ Place. It’s a great gag from a German hidden camera show. Two twins stand on either side of a plain piece of glass pretending it’s a mirror. When people come in the girl(s) pretend that they can see the other persons reflection no problem. Which of course they can’t. But the peoples bewildered expressions are classic. Buying a New Camera
2008-01-02 19:39:00 I got a new camera yesterday. Nice one to a Samsung L830. I got it in Currys in Mahon. Funny thing was that I went into PC World first (who have had their Irish Website shutdown because they didn’t pay for it) but they wouldn’t show me the camera before I bought it! I asked the guy could he turn it on so I can see how the controls work, what the display size was like and how the picture appeared on the display. Very strange. I mean why would I want to buy a camera that I haven’t seen? That’s like buying a car that I couldn’t take for a test drive. So I went next door to Currys and they showed me the camera, gave me the book so I could see the specs and let me play with it for a while. I was looking dubious so the guy said I could exchange it for a different camera if I didn’t like it. Perfect! So a sale of Currys at the expense of PC World all for the sake of plugging in a camera and leaving me look at it for 5 minutes. Actually I got a few camera... More About: Buying , Camera

Gaelic Games: Hurling Review
2007-11-20 19:15:00 Paul left his a link to his review of the game and I agree with everything he says about the game so in the interest of laziness here is what he has to say. “The first Gaelic Game was a big let down to all GAA fans. It’s lack of names and bad gameplay got some bad reviews from alot people, including myself. So how good would the first Hurling Game be? Well suprisingly it’s not bad. Making the fast’s game in the world was never going to be easy, but I think IR GURUS have done an excellent job. The gameplay is very good, although the graphic’s are not much better than Gaelic Games Football. The commentary is much the same with Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh giving his expert views. A good addition was the introduction of club teams, although they don’t have the real kit or badges and some of the clubs that are in it don’t even have a Hurling club, but this can quickly be resolved in the new edting section. Just like Konami’s Pro Evolution Soc... More About: Review
Sonys Gaelic Games hurling Screen Shots
2007-11-07 10:25:00 The stadia look really well done. Obviously these are probably not gameplay shots but it’s a start. I’ll be buying my copy Friday when it’s released so I’ll write a quick review then. My favourite line from the advertising is “to reflect the unpredictable nature of the Irish weather - conditions can now change during a match, and influence the outcome of the game”. Pity there are no ads on the TV for it though. Very little media coverage. I remember the one from last year of commentary over some lad moving stuff into his new house. It was very funny. Gaelic Games: Hurling
2007-11-05 10:23:00 Well it’s finally happening. Someone is releasing a computer game where you can play hurling. A few months ago a pretty good hurling manager game was released but now you can play the game itself. Unfortunately it is being developed by the same people who made the first Gaelic games Football Game (they are releasing a Gaelic Games Football 2 Game as well) however it can only be better than that game, which was a pretty poor rebadged version of an Aussie Rules Game they had developed previously. Still though I would urge anyone out there to buy it. The more people that buy it the more resources computer games manufacturers will but into developing these games as they will see there is a market for it. It is being developed for the Playstation 2 and is due to be released on the 9th of November. It also comes in a pack with both the Football and Hurling game included. Also in an intelligent move it includes a DVD which teaches you the skills of Hurling and Football. So it may e...
Halloween 2007
2007-11-01 16:50:00 Went out last night for Halloween . Thought there would be hardly anyone out because it was a Wednesday and everyone has work but I forgot about the students. Oh the students, I don’t think I have ever seen so many people out in the City Centre. There were huge queues outside every nightclub. We didn’t expect it so had no tickets as most places were ticket only. Still enjoyed ourselves though. Some of the fancy dresses were really good. Lot of work put into them. Sorry I didn’t take more photos of peoples costumes. Anyway I have uploaded the pictures to the Gallery. More About: Allo
Interprovincial Finals
2007-10-27 18:25:00 Watching the Inter-Pro matches on the TV now. No-one at Croke Park to watch it! What are the GAA doing putting it on during the Bank Holiday weekend? Not only is there no-one at the match I’d say no-one is watching it on TV. It wasn’t very well advertised. I reckon they should put it on St. Patricks Day instead of the Club Finals . I mean it’s great and all to have the Clubs playing on St. Patricks Day but to be fair very few people outside of the clubs themselves would have an interest in it. Whereas with the Interpros your literally have half the country interested in it. I don’t think the Club Finals need to be played on Paddys Day as any day your play in a All-Ireland Club Final is a big day. But at least the Interpros are back on the TV and in Croke Park.
Back Playing Hurling
More articles from this author:2007-10-23 11:58:00 Started back hurling training again last week. Really enjoyed it. Not a bad as I used to be I think, perhaps it’s because I have contact lenses now. Playing hurling with glasses underneath the helmet is definitely a drawback. Not sure what position I’d like to play yet. Probably Right Corner Forward. More About: Hurling , Back 1, 2 |
