Winter Morning Sunrise - Sky Watch Friday
2008-05-29 23:55:00 "Welcome to Winter !"Sunrise on a cold, clear morningSky Watch Friday We're really into Winter here in Australia. The sun isn't rising now until about 6:20am, which means that I'll often get up when it's still dark. This is great for capturing sunrises, although it's not too conducive to getting out of bed!Another benefit of capturing sunrises during Winter is that the atmosphere is usually very clear. Often when the sun comes up there will be no clouds or haze in the sky, just a clear, cold morning. Of course, this means that the sunrise will look very different, and it is sometimes harder to get a good sunrise without any clouds. I'm hoping to wake up early enough one of these days to get the sun rising over the valley - landscape shots tend to work best on clear mornings. This photo taken with the Fujifilm S9600 digital camera. "It was a dark and stormy night..." - SWF
2008-05-22 08:37:00 "It was a dark and stormy night..."Trees silhouetted by the purpleclouds, with lightning back-lightingSky Watch FridayI know, you've probably heard that title too many times already. It's one of the most under-rated and over-quoted verses in history. But I couldn't think of a better title for this picture, which was taken late one stormy night. The trees are back-lit by a flash of lightning, fading out as it reaches the top of the picture to reveal the dark storm clouds. You might also have noticed something familiar about these trees. Yep, you guessed it, this is the same easterly viewpoint seen in many other photos. Somehow, whenever there's an interesting sky around, it has to sit behind these trees. All I can really do is change the angle! This photo taken with the Fujifilm S9600 digital camera. Submit Photos to Shutterstock and make $$$! Time to take a break! (Monkey Relaxing)
2008-05-16 21:31:00 "Time to stop 'monkeying' around!"Monkey taking a breakI caught this monkey taking a break at the Dubbo (Western Plains) Zoo last year. It seems an appropriate photo for today's post, as I've just finished a hectic week of playing at the Eisteddfod (along with younger siblings who were in other sections). One of the pieces I played in this year's Eisteddfod was Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata", Opus 27, 3rd Movement ("Presto Agitato"). This is a quite an "agitated" piece, and certainly makes for a great performance, if you can play it well. Recently I found a video of Rowan Atkinson (better known as "Mr. Bean") miming this piece, along with the first movement of Beethoven's "Sonata Pathetique". His performance is quite clever, and very amusing for anybody who's played either of these pieces. I've included the video below, and highly recommend you check it out. This guy is really amazing! This photo taken with the Fujifilm S9600 digital camera. Submit Photos to Shutterstock and... More About: Break , Relaxing

Free Access to Encyclopedia Britannica for Bloggers
2008-04-21 07:13:00 Encyclopedia Britannica is well-known as a reputable source of information. Over 4,000 editors who are recognized as experts in their field help to maintain well-written and accurate articles in this classic reference. Unfortunately the encylopedia has been somewhat neglected nowdays, with the advent of Wikipedia which offers free access to all articles. For every article viewed on the pay-for Britannica Online, an estimated 187 articles are viewed on the free Wikipedia. This may be set to change though - you can now get access to the online version of Encyclopedia Britannica for free through a new program called Britannica Webshare - provided that you are a “web publisher.” Bloggers are included in this invitation: “This program is intended for people who publish with some regularity on the Internet, be they bloggers, webmasters, or writers. We reserve the right to deny participation to anyone who in our judgment doesn’t qualify.” I signed up for this program, and now have... More About: Free , Access , Encyclopedia
Cumulonimbus Storm Cloud - Thor's Masterpiece
2008-04-17 21:28:00 "Thor's Masterpiece "Cumulonimbus Thunder Storm Cloud at SunsetSky Watch FridayI found this storm cloud photo as I was going through my archives searching for images to enter in an upcoming photographic competition. The huge Cumulonimbus cloud is lit up a light pink colour by the setting sun, while the horizon below is silhouetted against the threatening dark blue clouds around the base of the thunder-head.This photo was taken in Goondiwindi, Queensland. When I entered it into the Goondiwindi Photo Competition, I titled it "Thor's Masterpiece".Original post: Cumulonimbus Storm CloudThis Sky Watch Friday photo taken with the Kodak C330 digital camera. Palm Trees and Moon - Sky Watch Friday
2008-04-10 21:00:00 "Tropical Twilight" - Moon through palm treesSky Watch Friday This is one of my older photos, taken in 2006 with the Kodak camera. I was experimenting with taking moon photos, and tried out this framing technique with the palm trees silhouetted against the twilight sky, and the fronds reaching from the top of the picture downwards to the moon. I think it turned out fairly well, although the moon is quite small due to the minute 3x zoom offered by the Kodak camera. You can just see the colours of the setting sun reflecting off the top of the palm trees.Update: Tom and other readers pointed out that you can actually see a face in this picture - look at the curve of the tree on the left for a nose, and the moon becomes an eye. Sunset in the Australian Bush - Sky Watch Friday
2008-03-07 22:22:00 Sunset in the Australian Bush Sky Watch Friday I've got another Aussie Bush Sunset for you today. This photo is actually quite interesting, as it converges from a wide spanning vista to a single point - the Sun. But the way in which this happens in what really makes this photo unique. Most sunset photos will place the sun in or near the centre of the picture. In this image, however, the sun is thrown to the far right of the landscape, leaving room for the clouds and sky to fill most of the frame. How do you like it?This photo taken with the Kodak C330 digital camera. Sea Shell on the Beach Sand
2008-02-26 08:21:00 Sea shell in sandShell in Sand at the Beach I was browsing through some of my old photos the other day, and found this beautiful shot of a Sea Shell. I took this at Moonee Beach, near Coffs Harbour, NSW some years ago. This photo really reminds me of the "early morning at the beach" experience, with the seaweed and waves just visible in the background. I can almost feel the gentle grit of the cool sand underfoot (or actually under-nose, as I was lying down on the sand when I took this photo!)Do you have any memories of the beach that you would like to share? Urban Landcape - Sunset, Sun-rays, and Clouds
2007-11-17 03:23:00 Sunset over Urban RooftopsLast night I was outside during twilight, and noticed this amazing sunset. The Sun has already disappeared behind the clouds, but rays of light are still shining out and covering the sky. Although the photo above might look touched-up, I have not digitally manipulated this picture. The duotone effect (where the sun and it's rays are black-and-white while the sky near the top of the picture is blue) simply occurred naturally. This is a capture which is not likely to be seen again soon, I was lucky to be out at the right time to see it.The photo below is of the same scene taken a few minutes later - you can see the huge difference between the pictures. In the photo below, the sun has set and the rays of light from the first picture are entirely gone, replaced instead by a reddish glow near the horizon.Sunsets are always very beautiful to watch, and each one is different. As you can see from these photos, the scene changes even from minute to minute, giving y... More About: Sunset , Clouds , Rays
Purple Agapantha Flower (Agapanthus africanus)
2007-11-12 08:18:00 Purple Agapantha Flower BloomingAs it's Spring time here in Australia, all the flowers are blossoming and the trees are growing fruit. One of the variety of flowers blooming here at the moment is the Agapantha flower, properly called the Agapanthus africanus. These purple flowers are just starting to bud - when they have opened they will turn into a loosely hanging bunch of bright purple blossoms. The photo shown above depicts an agapantha flower that is just beginning to blossom - the left half has started to unfold while the right section is still a bud. The green of the flower blend in with the green grass in the background, and contrasts nicely with the purple blossoms just beginning to peek out of the flower. A this photo was taken with an aperture of F4.9, the background remains out of focus, thus keeping the attention drawn to the flower itself. It was overcast when I took this photo, so the picture has a very soft look to it. There was still enough sunlight available for me t... More About: Purple
Lighting Striking Dead Tree
2007-11-10 04:26:00 Lightning Striking at Night - Dead Tree SilhouetteThe other night we had a big thunderstorm over here, so naturally I was out with the camera in the cold and wet while others were inside snug and warm. Actually, I wasn't so foolish as to bring the camera outside during the rain, but after the storm passed over I went out looking for lightning shots. I took a few 30-second exposures, but the noise even at ISO 80 was disappointing. Decreasing the shutter speed by increments, eventually I got down to a 2-second exposure at ISO 80. Now for lightning, there's not much chance of getting a good shot with only a 2-second exposure. But I tried anyway. And what turned out was amazing...It was a one in a million chance. During the second exposure, a huge bolt of lightning split the sky - directly in the middle of the frame. And this is how it turned out. I find it amazing that I was able to get such a good shot on just the second try. The lightning is streaking through the darkened sky, endi... More About: Lighting
Cumulonimbus Thunder-storm Cloud at Sunset
2007-07-20 09:04:00 Huge Cumulonimbus Thunder -head and Storm Front at Sunset Storm Cloud s at SunsetI've been browsing through my old photos lately, and this is one of the shots that turned up. This photo depicts a cumulonimbus cloud heading a storm front, with the main thunder-head rendered in a pinkish hue due to the late evening sun reflecting off it. The storm clouds themselves are a threatening deep blue, and the black silhouette formed by the treeline and rooftops at the bottom of the image only serves to intensify the general atmosphere of foreboding. This photo, I think, truly imparts a sense of awe at the great power of creation.Moving on to a lighter note, this photo again uses a rough approach to the "rule of thirds". The silhouette forms the lower one-third of the image, the blue clouds another third, and the pink "anvil" of the cumulonimbus cloud rises toward the top of the frame. The focus seems to be divided between two areas of this picture - the pink thunder-head is the primary subject, ...
