ABC Wednesday - E

(The Wordless Wednesday post is beneath this post.)E is for Eggshells .......A busy morning of baking used the rest of the eggs in the carton.I usually buy brown eggs, so upon seeing these white eggshells against the gray, I was enticed to grab a shot.My family is used to seeing the camera appear at the most odd times, so ignoring their sighs and exasperations, I captured these broken eggshells before they were tossed into the trash. After viewing the finished image, I think I like the texture of the carton better then the broken eggs! Green Thumb Sunday - Weeds Against the Sky

Weeds Against the Sky for Green Thumb Sunday Green Thumb Sunday BlogrollHow to join Green Thumb SundayBack to the days of summer with this post.I was sitting down on the rocks at the ocean, and upon turning around, back towards the shore, I spotted a patch of weeds growing out of the rocks above me.The clouds had just cleared and the green color looked quite striking against the blue sky.Upon a closer inspection of them, they had tiny little white flowers along the length of the stalk, so I think they are some type of wildflower.Next season, I will spend an extra minute checking them out to find what kind they are. (The Wordless Wednesday post is beneath this post.)D is for Dartboard .......A macro shot of a well used dart board. The red and white sections create a neat pattern, and the many holes give it character.I am not sure how the numbers along the side work in the point scoring system, but they have their share of holes in them too. Green Thumb Sunday - Beaver Lodge

Beaver Lodge for Green Thumb Sunday Green Thumb Sunday BlogrollHow to join Green Thumb SundayFor the last couple of weeks, I have been posting about a hike through a swamp, and about a tree that a beaver had gnawed down. This will be the last post on the beaver, I promise. The above image is of the beaver's house, or lodge. It looks like a mass of sticks just piled together in the water, but there is really quite a network that he has built under the water that we can't see.He places the trees just so, and the entrance to his home is nowhere near the lodge - it starts quite a ways from it - almost like a tunnel of sticks and trees under the water. He builds several of these tunnels - it is always nice to have an escape route if needed.Since this was out in the middle of the swamp, this was as close as I could get to it.Many years ago I stood on top of a lodge that was built right next to a dam that a beaver had also built. No camera at that time, but the underwater network he had built...

In Need of Summer
2008-02-09 03:06:00
Summer at the Driving RangeAfter four winter storms this week, and another one coming tomorrow, we are in serious need of a reminder of summer.I remember this day being a very hot July afternoon, and the boys wanted to stop at the driving range to drive some golf balls.Always aware that a stray ball could come flying my way, I scooted to the end of the green to capture the neat arc of the stalls. One thing I did notice though, all the people must be right handed, as none were facing me to drive the balls with their left hands. (The Wordless Wednesday post is beneath this post.)C is for Coneflowers .......I was drawn instantly to the beautiful mauve color of these pretty Coneflowers.Set against the deep green leaves, with their centers so full and perfect, I just couldn't resist them.Notice the dark gray sky behind them - I had just enough time to snap these little beauties before Mother Nature sent us a whooping summer thunder storm.Be sure to check out my Wordless Wednesday post beneath this one - the image was taken about half an hour after this one. Busy Beaver for Green Thumb Sunday Green Thumb Sunday BlogrollHow to join Green Thumb SundayFor the last couple of weeks, I have been posting about a hike through a swamp.Last week's post showed a tree that a beaver had gnawed down. This week's post shows a close up of the beaver's handiwork. You can see how he just kept circling the tree as he gnawed away on it until if just got so thin that the tree toppled over.If you view the larger image, you can see the actual teeth marks that he made.It really is a work of art in itself! (The Wordless Wednesday post is beneath this post.)B is for Betta Fish .......This little blue Betta fish had such a personality.I really believe that they recognize their owners - he always paid close attention - especially when he saw us eating,This little life force was such good company, I do miss having him on my desk.He was really hard to photograph through the water and the focus was hard to set with all his swimming, but the back fin and long tail have pretty details if you view the larger image. Trail Marker for Green Thumb Sunday Green Thumb Sunday BlogrollHow to join Green Thumb SundayFor the last couple of weeks, I have been posting about a hike through a swamp. The trails are maintained by the Audubon Society, and there are different colored markers posted on trees to mark the trail you are following. We came upon this tree - gnawed down very nicely by a beaver. I had to chuckle - that trail marker was pointing in a direction that I was not inclined to follow.I think he was trying to tell us humans to find another trail and leave this area to him. A is for Apple .......Last week we finished the first round of the alphabet, so this week begins anew with the letter A.These apples were photographed last fall, and are the freshest to be found anywhere.Picked right from the the tree, it was the best tasting Red Delicious Apple I had ever eaten. So very crisp and sweet, the juice was delicious to slurp up - I can almost taste it just looking at it.Surprisingly, this image has been one of my best selling stock images. TaxesThe camera has been on a bit of a vacation for the last week or so, and will have to be for the next month or so as well.It is income tax season, and pulling all the reports together and closing up the year ends for a self employed family is a big job.The paperwork is astonishing and the organizing and calculating has yet to begin.I am most thankful for the computer and all the time and work it saves - I remember well the days of written ledgers with pages and pages of entries, and really don't want to go back there!Stumble It! Swamp Bridge for Green Thumb Sunday Green Thumb Sunday BlogrollHow to join Green Thumb SundayLast week I posted an image about a hike through a swamp. The image above shows the boards surrounded by swamp water. The wood bridge was the last stable piece of the walkway. The boards went for about a mile through the swamp until they just came to a stop.Forced to retrace our steps, we walked the unsteady boards back to the little bridge. So lush and green, the swamp was a peaceful yet unnerving way to spend the afternoon. Green Thumb Sunday - Swamp Plants
2008-01-06 13:47:00
Swamp Plants for Green Thumb Sunday Green Thumb Sunday BlogrollHow to join Green Thumb SundayThis swamp or marshland is one of several trails that is maintained by the Aududon Society in our state. It was quite a harrowing experience walking this trail which was set literally in the center of a swamp. There were planks, made by two 2x4 beams that were setting upon posts on either end. The posts were submerged, so all you saw were the planks, surrounded by oozing, bubbling, gurgling swamp water. The planks needed to be readjusted in some spots, as they had slipped completely off the posts. When you stepped on a plank, it would dip in the center between the posts, and the rising water would surround your shoe. All this while keeping your balance, trying not to slip on the wet plank, praying the plank would hold, and just imagining how deep the water was if it did break.I feared most for my camera, clutching it with one hand while my other one had a death grip on my husband's hand, ar...

(The Wordless Wednesday post is beneath this post.)X is for X .......X was a hard one this week, so I had to use my imagination.Mother Nature presented me with this tumbled mass of old weathered upturned roots and I took a picture - trying to capture the textures and patterns in the wood.It wasn't until I got home and was processing the image that I saw the X that was made by the roots crossing each other. There were many of these old upturned stumps that had been moved by the fierce flood waters that we had in the autumn. There was even a whole stump like this one up high in one of the trees - floated up by the high water and caught in the tree's branches.Hard for man to fight these forces - Mother Nature is always holding all the cards.
