ABC Wednesday -- McDonald's
2007-10-17 03:32:00
I am not a big fan of McDonald's but happen to have 2 favorite McDonalds. I visited this first McDonald's for about three months when I managed to find the right timing to use my company free shuttle bus to work. I went to this McDonald after dropping off my kid to school. With different time schedules and both of my boys in schools, I forfeited the great privilege in taking free shuttle to work. This McDonald has a classic touch in the interior and it certainly looks very uniqueAll photos taken with Casio ex-z750Focal B&W are done in PicasaFocal B&W are done in Picasa The other interesting McDonald that I have ever visited is in Stanford Shopping Mall, it has a piano inside with classical music played all dayMcDonald's in Stanford Shopping Center Last week ABC Wednesday Lighting The Candles

Inexpensive gear with Pentax
2007-10-09 03:18:00
Pentacon 50mm f/1.8 (with M42 adapter)I use all the inexpensive gear that I can get with Pentax . I am on the frugal side who wants to go back to school for learning photography instead of lusting for the expensive DA* or all the primes that I am so inclined to look and NOT dare to see the price tag. Not that I want to discourage others from getting the better gear, I am simply constrained by my limiting budget and I try to enjoy my hobby with the inexpensive gear in the beginning. The following are various blog posts on all inexpensive but quality pentax gear that I have with Pentax1. Thoughts on DA 18-55I find the kit's lens is right on the money for my beginning path to dSLR from p&s. It does very well for me in outdoor setting. It is not the sharpest but it does reasonably well for outdoor and its zoom range at wide angle fits me very well for outdoor use. For indoor, I find it slow and needing the help with external flash as the internal flash does more damage to a pho...

Photo taken with Pentax FA 50 f/1.4I manage to find a curvy picture taken with my first copy of FA 50 f/1.4 on my first day testing the lens in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The lens was returned for an exchange as I found many soft pictures in daytime settings with f/4.0. This is my second post participating photohunt with this weekly theme set for 'Curvy'. Thursday Challenge -- Autumn Festival
2007-10-04 03:59:00
Thursday Challenge I took this shot with Fuji F30 last year during Fremont 50 years celebration. Time goes very fast and it has been a year that I have owned Fuji F30 and I still have not managed to finish the blog post on my thoughts on Fuji F30. It is a great point & shoot camera for taking snapshots and a perfect compliment to digital SLR types of camera. And I have another photo taken with Casio ex-z750 on the Oktoberfest in Yahoo last year

Wednesday ABC -- Killing The Beast
2007-10-03 04:30:00
It happened last Tuesday that our family worked as a team to zap a beast with some needed tool in killing the beast after some struggles. It is hard to kill an annoying fly at home and this time happens at night after dinner. We turned off all lightings except kitchen and narrowed down the beast to a well lit area. Thanks to wife's superb badminton play, my occasional lucky smash in ping pong fashion, my older boy' 20/20 vision to locate the beast and the after dance cheerleader of my younger boy, we did manage to kill the beast before we could celebrate without fear on our mooncake in mid-autumn festival. All photos are taken with Pentax FA 50 f/1.4 and Pentax K100D

Casio ex-z750 in duct tapeI manage to find the original picture of how I setup my Casio ex-z750 to take video on my bike ride. It was last year right around the time that I started Hin's Photo Blog that I did it one early morning. The jerky video of my bike ride can be seen in Early Bike Ride. Thoughts on Pentax FA 50 f/1.4
2007-09-29 03:57:00
My 1st copy has softness issues even at small apertures in daytime shooting and I returned it for an exchange. I love my 2nd copy of FA 50 f/1.4, I have procrastinated on all the front/back focusing tests that I set out to do when I got my 2nd copy. The formal testing on my 2nd FA 50 f/1.4 may never happen as I already fall in love with my new lens. The more that I use my FA 50 f/1.4, the more I love the lens. I love it not for the sharpness obviously. I love it for the great color, contrast, wonderful 3D look with narrow dof when I get lucky. And it is a funny term that I use, the picture looks creamy and sometime it sure looks better than the actual scene through my eyes. I have many pictures done at home and I always have the messy feeling about my home and the narrow DOF correct that and my home is as pretty as I can dream about :-)Okay, back to the softness testing, I find it soft until f/2.0+ for me for indoor portraits -- this is not a definite as I no longer pixel peep ...

Crumpler 2 million Dollar Bag
2007-09-25 04:34:00
It is definitely too small for my Pentax K100D but I find it on sale for closing out item in Circuit City. I paid $6.50 out the door -- I couldn't believe it. I bought it as the last one available in Circuit City in Fremont Automall. Some pictures and use of it for my 5 year old camcorder with Canon -- the bag is a perfect match for my dated and a bit bulky camcorder -- Canon ZR 50. All pictures were taken with my 2nd copy of FA 50 f/1.4 -- the shots come out quite satisfactory for me as I did it in a rush this morning with fluorescent lighting for added lighting in early morning and pp with Picasa with 'i am feeling lucky' and 'highlight/lighting/shadow'.Related Posts:Hin's Camera Bag -- with diapers, similac baby bottle insulator.About meJoby GorillapodPicasa 'I am feeling lucky'

I have my kids' pictures first debuted in a slide show in My Kids My Passions in my photo blog. Fields Of Dreams with Pentax
2007-09-21 00:22:00
Picture taken with Penta x DA 50-200I have similar picture debuted in You Are My Hiding Place. I continue to have Pentax DA 50-200 as my most frequently used lens among others. I especially like its light weight and the focal range. It would have been nice if it were something wider like the DA 35-150mm but that is another price that I can't afford at the current moment.Related Posts & Links:SR Test Shots on 1/8 to 1/2 seconds with DA 18-55Pentax DA 18-55 replacementPentax FA 50 f/1.4Thoughts on Takumar Asahi 28-80 MacroReaction to Photozone.de review on DA 50-200

Narrow DOF with FA 50 f/1.4
2007-09-18 16:42:00
1/160 sec, f/2.5, 50mm, iso 200, 0Ev1/125 sec, f/2.0, 50mm, iso 200, 0 Ev1/160 sec, f/2.4, 50mm, iso 200, 0 EvThough I aim the focus at the white flower in the 1st and 2nd shots, I get soft focus on the white flower but the pink leaf in front of it is sharp. I am forcing myself not to think of the possibility of front focusing as I do get much sharper pictures in my 2nd copy of Pentax FA 50 f/1.4. And my 3rd picture seems sharper than first two and looks reasonably well in sharpness.I have yet to try manual focusing on Pentax FA 50 f/1.4 which I find to be very decent due to the wide focusing ring in the lens. Other critical suggestions include using tripod and larger aperture like f/8.0 for macro on flower shot, but the amateur in me still likes to play with narrow DOF as I find it most challenging and it helps in creating a unique story about the flower which is being singled out in the picture.Links:Nikon D70 Test Chart -- good reference on lens testingFocusTest Chart PDF -- ...
2nd copy of Pentax FA 50 f/1.4
2007-09-16 10:09:00
I have been testing my exchanged copy of FA 50 f/1.4 after finding too many soft pictures even in daylight environment in f/4.0 with my 1st copy. The exchanged copy seems better in terms of sharpness in daylight and I don't have many test pictures for indoor but so far I find it better in sharpness than my 1st copy. For indoor, I still run into soft pictures at f/2.0 or lower but overall it is better than my 1st copy.Love the sharpness, color and contrastf/2.0 seems sharp in this picturef/2.0, 1/100sec, iso 800 (should have tried iso 400)Love color from FA 50 f/1.4Related Posts:Penta x FA 50 f/1.4 Desktop Test ShotsPentax FA 50 f/1.4 Outdoor Tests in Love Is KindPentax FA 50 f/1.4 Indoor Tests on Ben's BirthdayThoughts on Pentax DA 18-55Looking for Pentax portraits LensFlash thoughts after FA 50 f/1.4Narrow DOF in FA 50 f/1.4

2007-09-12 09:23:00
Photograph ABC is on letter 'H' this week and I have not come up with any interesting H pictures and I find it the appropriate time to have an 'About' post for myself and this blog page in TechTheMan. Hin is my first name in Chinese. As someone who loves to take photos of others, I have a difficult time to like myself being photographed. Not that I don't trust others, I just feel awkward to ask others for a favor. Why this BlogI intend to use this blog to document my journey form p&s to dSLR and things that I have learned along the path in digital photography, blogging, advertising, the web, imaging tools, software and products related to photo editing, publishing and visual arts.Camera gearMy current camera gear consists of the following:Pentax K100DDA 18-55DA 50-200FA 50 f/1.4m42 Pentacon 50mm f/1.8Schneidar 135mm f/3.5Praktica 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6Fuji F30Casio ex-z750Joby GorillapodHin's Camera Bagswith Diapers, Lunch Box and Similac InsulatorDigital PassionsMy digital pa...
HinTheMan in Multiply
2007-09-11 18:05:00
I have just created a multiply.com account for trying out merging my photos and blogs together in one place. This is a very kool site for one to display photographs and I think the site is based in java and after a day of simple cutomization with CSS, I managed to create a simple site with little efforts in editing and multiply.com provides a very simple and user friendly user interface in importing photos with Flickr as well as RSS setup for blogging. My initial impressions are all wonderful and I am yet to invite friends over to form useful community for Pentax, Fuji and Casio. If you happen to be have an account in multiply, please send me an invite. The above badge will lead you to my multiply site. -->

Hin's Camera Bags
2007-09-11 04:59:00
I am so proud of my camera bags composed of my normal backpack from Nikko, a lunch box, diapers for cushioning and a Similac bottle insulators. And I have a second small handbag good enough to carry my K100D with two lensWhen more time is allowed, I will document fully my lineup of lens and camera bags that I use. And I do have weird combination of lunch box, diapers and Similac baby formula insulator, for now, have some imagination with the pictures that I took with my Fuji F30.And my full lineup of current gears and two camera bagsI usually don't carry more than two lens. I always have my DA 50-200 as it is my popular lens. And 2nd is either my kit's lens or my 50 mm. Sometime, I replace my kit's lens with the Takumar Asahi 28-80 Macro as it has Macro at 80mm which I find quite alright for a $37 lens So I usually limit my lens to 2 and definitely no more than 3. And with my backpack, I can stack the similac baby bottle bag below my lunch box which houses my camera and one sma...
