Purple Fringe with Tamron 70-300 Di LD Macro
2008-05-20 04:19:00
I try to have a simple write up on how I handle purple fringe (colored fringes along edges on areas of high contrast.) This happens more often on Tamron 70-300 Di LD Macro but it does not stop me from finding the lens dependable as the cost of the lens is so inexpensive and I just learn to work around the problems. In general, I pay more attention to the shots made with this lensAvoid backlit area with high contrastUse smaller aperture. Use f/8.0 instead of f/5.6 for long end in the zoomUse higher iso instead of bigger apertureAnd the following picture is sample of purple fringe around the rock area as well as the off focus area with purple color in the bokehAnd without photoshop and other commercial tools, I manage to use the following free software tools:XnView An free utility for viewing and converting graphic files.Accepts Photoshop pluginPFreeA free photoshop purple fringe pluginOnce I get PFree plugin to properly install on my XnView, I can call and execute the plugin on th...

Genuine Pentax M42 to K Adapter

Left: 3rd party adapterRight: Genuine Pentax M42 to K Adapter Left: 3rd party adapterRight: Genuine Pentax M42 to K Adapter The Genuine adapter has less wording in the engraving. It is the right one on the above two pictures with engraving for "Asahie Pentax" on top and "Japan" on bottom. The 3rd party adapters such as those from Kalt and Bower share the same mechanical build as the genuine adapters but they are bought with a tool for dismounting the adapterDismounting tool from 3rd party adapterBower adapter on bottom with "Bower" engraving on top In general, I recommend others to get the genuine adapter as the best adapter to use with M42 on Pentax latest dSLR. It is easy to use and dismounting can be done without the use of additional tool. With practice, I find myself frequently remove the adapter with thumb and index finger holding on the two holes in the K mount and dismount the clip with inward direction followed by a anti-clockwise turn of the adapter to unmount the adap...
Pentax Auto 110 & Morning Coffee
2008-05-06 04:29:00
I put this miniature SLR camera into my to-be-sold items and so far I am undecided whether I should part away with this cute camera. The first roll of test film was destroyed when I found that I had a dead battery and the battery was inside the film compartment and I am onto the fifth frame of test shots on the 2nd roll of Kodah 200 film. If you think that I should not sell it to my good friend for $100, please comment and show your support that I should keep it.I know once I see some good pictures from this camera, I would have a harder time to sell it. This camera is very small and I can have it in my backpack similar to another point & shoot. And I have three lens with the camera 18mm, 24mm, and 50mm when I purchased it as a set with winder and 8 different filters for $120. So far, I am very impressed with the viewfinder and the picture taking with it is quite easy to handle. I get stuck in deciding to trim this or not, please comment and show your support.

I have been busy trimming down my gear. Just want to show you the Pentax Auto 110 camera that I purchased few months ago. Here is the debut of my CBA evident, the shame, the glory, and fun with camera collection. Pictures are taken from K10D with Tokina 28-70 f/2.8-4.3 shooting wide open, I can't sell my Tokina, the product shots are as good as those from my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 except on the colors. Tamron 70-300 Di LD Macro Test Shots

All test shots are done hand-held with Pentax K10D in iso 100 with JPG setting on bright image tone with +2 on sharpness and -1 on saturation on some of them. Post processing are done in PicasaInitial Impressions:Very capable close up work with this zoom with 1:2 magnification in long end of the zoom from 180mm to 300mmAmazingly sharp for its price and that it is a zoom lens, I paid only $90 for a used copy of this zoom. New one only costs $129.00 as of this writingColor are rich and have good contrast and detailsAF is effective but a bit slow in the macro zoom range.AF.C is working reasonably well with little bug around flowersThough manual focus ring has a large focus throw, it is difficult to use manual focus as the macro only become available in 180mm to 300mm in which the zoom extends to a greater length making it difficult and awkward to focus hand held manually.I used f/8.0 throughout the test and use negative Ev compensation to reduce purple fringing in scenes with high co...

Pentax M 200mm f/4.0 Test Shots
2008-04-22 08:00:00
I bought this lens a while ago and it is a shame that I have never gotten a single shot with this lens until last weekend. Few test shots were taken as JPG snapshots with my K10D in wide open aperture in f/4.0. Due to wind in a hiking trail, I used mostly ISO 400 to avoid motion blur. To my surprises, K10D is much noisier than my K100D in JPG.I love the lens so far but just I have too many overlapping lens with similar focal length that I don't get to use this prime as often. For one thing, I like the built-in lens hood and sharpness of the lens. There are various shots that I have problems with color not matching the original scenes. Orange looks more like yellow and brown looks more like grayish black. But my problems may be attributed unfamiliar JPG settings in K10D and I currently don't have a work flow and tool with Raw file in K10D.I am somewhat disappointed with JPG on K10D. Having been a loyal fan of Pentax K100D on JPG for over a year, I am stumbled to find poor...

Pentax PZ-1 & SMC FA 28-105 f/3.2-4.5
2008-04-18 04:35:00
Some test shots with Pentax PZ-1 and Pentax SMC FA 28-105 f/3.2-4.5. I love my PZ-1, this film body reminds me of Pentax K10D. It has two command dials very similar to the Pentax K10D and I feel no stranger in using all the hyper mode with the film camera. When I bought this used, I didn't even have the manual and I was no stranger to the camera on first shooting. It is a sweet film camera from Pentax and its Auto Focus seems even faster than the digital brethren and its shutter noise is well controlled and the whole gadget doesn't seem dated at all. Overall, I am well pleased with this film camera and it has more than what I would expect from a serious amateur film camera.I used Fujifilm 400 film and Pentax SMC FA 28-105 seems to do work well with Pentax PZ-1. I actually prefer the color form SMC than that from Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 when I tried the camera on two lens. Somehow, I find the lens with good color and contrast though the Tamron shows better sharpness in indoor s...

Fungus in rear elementThis is one of the lens that I got it without knowing fungus is on the rear element. I have placed the lens under sunlight and I can't be sure if expose to UV is enough to kill the fungus and I have no idea if it will spread further in the lens. It is not too severe when I examine the fungus. And my test shots seem to surprise me on the quality of the Pentax M28mm f/2.8. All test shots are attempted with Pentax K10D in Bright mode +2 on sharpness at open aperture in f/2.8 except the last two shots. Pentax Super Takumar 105mm f/2.8 in M42
2008-04-15 01:26:00
LBA (Lens Buying Addiction) has crept up on me in getting many unused lens for months after purchase. This Super Takumar happens to be first one to go. I only managed to use it the weekend before I packaged it for my friend. Now that it is gone, I missed the small size and silky smooth focusing ring. I previously owned a Super Takumar 35mm f/3.5 and I sold it too to my another good buddy of mine in photography forum. Perhaps, I have no luck in keeping two different Super Takumars. I love those old glasses and they are one of a kind in small and lightweight, compact like a pancake in its own charming way. Had I been more careful with my buying, I would have been able to justify keeping my two Super Takumar. I have purchased this old Pentax K 45-125mm f/4.0, a manual foucs lens, as a poor man's choice for Pentax DA* 50-135 f/2.8. I have a few test shots over the weekend, the lens is quite big but well balanced to use on my K100D. All test shots attempted at wide open aperture in f/4.0Initial Impressions:A lot of detail for a zoom lens.Color is rich as in Pentax SMC lensQuick zooming and focusing can be achieved with this one touch zoom that has a loose focusing ring as compared to othersZoom tends to fall to the front 45mm end away from body and there is no zoom lockThe lens is a bit bulky and heavy but well balanced in my K100D bodyf/4.0 throughout the rangeClosest distance is about 1.5m/5.0 feet throughout the focal rangeFocal range from 45-125mm quite good for portraitsGood color, contrast and sharpness at wide open aperture. Spiratone 20mm f/2.8 Test Shots
2008-04-03 05:29:00
I have my usual naive expectations going for the cheaper alternative for lens. I don't know much about this lens except my need for a wider angle prime matches with this lens. And I want it to be fast with maximum aperture at f/2.8. When I saw this in ebay for sixty something, it was a no brainer to me to take it as my temporary choices for a 3 prime trio as in 20mm/50mm/85mm as a cheap alternative to my desired Pentax limited lens in 21mm/43mm/70mm. Though the lens has the wide angle and fast speed that I want for the wide angle prime without the fisheye effect, my initial impressions are not quite satisfactory. I tried the lens in both of my K100D and Pentax SuperProgram and I summarize my thoughts belowInitial Impressions:Wide angle at 20mm is very useful as compared to my Vivitar 24mm and 28mm. So I assume 21mm is going to be great for street photography and landscapeThe Spiratone is unfortunately not very sharp at wide angle aperture at f/2.8. Perhaps I am expecting t...

2008-04-02 04:05:00
I have purchased this Vivitar plastic lens for a while. From this website, it looks like a lens made from Cosina although I am not sure.Who made that Vivitar lensI purchased this very cheaply in a bundle with a Pentax P5 film camera and the lens itself has cost me probably $5.0. It is one of my prime that I used frequently for night time street photography and landscape shots. Though the lens is not well built in construction, it is all plastic and light weight. But pictures taken with my Pentax K100D are great with the lens. Lens flare and ghosting are seen in shooting into the sun light and harsh lighting at night. And I am yet to find a lens hood.My impressions:Very inexpensive for wide angle prime at 24mmIt has the 'A' setting on aperture which is a big bonus for me for manual lensFocus ring is half turn and it is great for manual focusingLens flare are seen in many shots taken with this lensQuite sharp wide open at f/2.8Very light and compact for walk around and street ...

I got this M42 lens from a good friend of mine in PentaxForums. Too bad, I get a bit of oil in the blades but so far I don't run into shutter problems and the lens is in pristine condition and James has given me a nice matching lens hood to guard against flare. The lens is built like a tank and I used a genuine Pentax M42 adapter to use with my K100D body. This is one of the hardest manual lens that I have ever used. Test shots come out blurry due to mistakes on my part missing the right focus and the use of ISO 400 and aperture at f/2.0 for all test shots are taxing on the image quality. With more experience, I should be able to adapt to the lens.My impressions:Lens is well constructed and it feels very different than the plastic lensA portraiture lens with soft touchMore difficult than other manual lens to use due to stiff focusing ring.Prone to flare without lens hoodQuite soft at wide open aperture but I find f/2.0 quite good for indoor without flash.

Pentax SMC 28-80 f/3.5-4.7 Power Zoom Test Shots
2008-03-26 03:29:00
I have two copies of this lens and both missed the cover for the power zoom switch for A/AS specific function for power zoom. I kept one copy to myself after I tested the power zoom quite positively on my K100D body and Pentax pz-1 film body. It has rich color and contrast and I find the longer focal range more easy to use with less lens change as compared to Pentax DA 18-55 kit's lens.I did all the following test shots in San Francisco on 1st day of 2008.Related:Thoughts on Pentax DA 18-55Tokina 19-35 as Kit's ReplacementPentax SMC FA 28-105 as a walkaround lens

Tamron 70-300 f/4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro Test Shots
2008-03-25 03:03:00
I had my first chance to test a used copy of Tamron 70-300 Di Macro that I bought it used from Pentaxforums marketplace. The lens that I got is almost like new and I just tested the lens with K10D over a past weekend. It is sad and unsettled that I have returned my K10D for a defect found in the shutter with no spring load. With inputs from others, it may be my inexperience with K10D shutter. All test shots are done in bright mode with the wrong adjustment on +2 to contrast and saturation and hence the high contrast and saturation on the test shots. I am quite happy with the purchase and the lens perform well for me especially for the longer range that I can use in the zoo. It will compete with my Pentax DA 50-200 for sure. Purple fringing are seen in a couple of shots with high contrast and I am told to use a smaller aperture to minimize purple fringe with this lens.Related:Reaction to photozone.de on Pentax DA 50-200Tamron 28-75 Di Test Shots
Vivitar 28mm f/2.5 from Kiron
2008-03-20 02:52:00
I bought this Vivitar lens from a good friend of mine and I know that the K mount won't fit into the KAF2 mount in my K100D. The lens is in superb condition and inexpensive price for a dinner lure me to get this lens without a 2nd thought. And it turns out the lens, with the base (baffle) removed, I can use it on my K100D body without any noticeable problems. All that is needed is to remove three tiny screws on the lens base plate and once the baffle is off, I have no problems using the lens as is.I later used my Christmas toy with Dremel to modify the extra flange that make the lens incompatible with my K100D body. With the Dremel tool, I manage to grind down the obstructing flange area and painted it black with a black marker. And here are few test shots:I have not formed conclusive opinions on the lens but so far I like the fast aperture at f/2.8 and the construction of the lens from Kiron is quite solid. The focusing ring is well suited for manual focusing. Sharpness a...
Vivitar 70-210 "Series 1" f/3.5 from Kiron
2008-03-19 03:12:00
I had few test shots with Vivitar "Series 1" 70-210 f/3.5 that I had a hard time selling in a forum marketplace. I finally managed to sell it for a meager $63.00 to another forum member who had enjoyed this fine lens before. I prefer much lighter gear and this lens is the heaviest that I have handled but the color, contrast, sharpness is the best 70-210 that I have handled. According to this site Vivitar 70-210 Series 1 Macro Zooms - Mark Roberts Photography the "Series 1" version I have is the version 1 with serial number starting with "22" made by Kiron, I think the version 3 will be lighter one. Though it is not the best one as reported by Mark in his report, I think this version 1 from Kiron with the exception on weight, produces quite outstanding images. I have not developed my first roll of film yet and results are yet to be seen. Pentax SMC FA 28-105 f/3.2-4.5 Test Shots
2008-03-11 03:32:00
I find Pentax SMC FA 28-105 f/3.2-4.5 the best walk-around lens in my gear. It is very lightweight, small and compact in size and the zoom range fits my needs really well. I have used this lens with Pentax K100D and Pentax pz-1 auto focus film body and lens performs well in both bodies. Compared to Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, it is not as sharp in wide open aperture but the color, lightweight and compactness of this lens has stood out among all the zoom lens that I have. And its bokeh is nice with rounded ring lights and it has rich color though not as sharp compared to Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 or my prime lens in 24mm, 28mm and 50mm. This capable zoom complements my Tokina 19-35 f/3.5-4.5 in traveling very well in the range from 19 to 105 with two zoom lens. And I can have one lens for all quick snapshots with this lens. For most of my shooting, I carry one prime and one zoom. And my latest is to carry this SMC FA 28-105 f/3.2-4.5 and either my manual primes with Spiratone 20mm f/2.8 or...

Tokina 19-35 f/3.5-4.5 Test Shots
2008-03-11 03:11:00
I love this Tokina lens so far in the short time that I use it with my K100D. It actually replaces my Pentax DA 18-55 very much. Though it is not as wide and not as long as the Pentax kit's lens, I like its performance especially in the wider end. At wide open aperture, its sharpness beats the kit's lens. I got my copy under $100 bucks and it comes with a compatible lens hood from a great seller in eBay. I loved the lens so much that I I ordered the original Tokina lens hood from Amazon/Adoroma store. This is an AF lens from Tokina and it has a short focusing ring and AF seems to be fast in this lens and though it is all in plastic, it is very well constructed. I have gotten a lot lens flare without mounting a lens hood, the original Tokina lens hood is highly recommended accessory to get with this lens.Tokina Hood Bh774 f/19-35 Hld LensesRelated:Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 Test Shots Thoughts on Pentax DA 18-55
How to convert Pentax M42 to K mount lens
2008-02-28 04:05:00
Here is my first attempt to drill a receiving hole on a M42 lens. Refinement is definitely needed but I have below a rough outline how I manage to convert an M42 lens to simulate a K mount lens. The benefit of doing the conversion save me the awkward step of mounting and dismounting the M42 adapter. The caveats fall into the need of getting an inexpensive altered adapter for each M42 lens along with the need to drill a receiving hole on the M42 lens. Also, this conversion assumes the lens base is big enough to hold the adapter and leaving enough room for a receiving hole to retain the locking pin from the K socket.A tool to drill a receiving holeI use a regular portable Dremel drill bit set bought from Walmart around $40 in Christmas. An altered M42 adapter with spring plate removedTape to shield lens opening to guard against debrisA guide for finding position to drill a receiving hole for locking pin from K mount body -- I use crayon in my first attempt.
