Into the wild: AdSense for feeds
2008-05-30 18:12:00 We've been hinting at this for awhile, but it's finally time to spill the beans: Starting next week, we'll be rolling out AdSense for feeds to a small group of publishers, in anticipation of a full launch to all FeedBurner and AdSense publishers "coming soon". If you start seeing "Ads by Google" on an ad in a feed somewhere, that'd be us. So what will this mean for you? Well, publishers already in the FeedBurner Ad Network will continue to see premium CPM ads directly sold onto their content, but with the added bonus of contextually targeted ads that will fill up the remainder of their inventory. That means you get the best of both worlds: a dedicated Google sales force that knows how and why to sell onto your content, with the added revenue that full back-fill coverage provides. And with AdSense, you'll know that your back-filled ads are using the strongest contextual ad engine, ensuring the most relevant and profitable ads are delivered to your subscribers. And yes, ads are ... More About: Adsense , Wild
FeedBurner Integration for Blogspot Blogs
2007-07-12 00:00:00 Hot on the heels of last week's much-ballyhooed free FeedBurner for everyone, we are very excited to announce the immediate availability of one-click redirection for Blogger Blogs pot blogs (note our fine use of both alliteration and first syllable congruence). If you host your content on a Blogger blog with a blogspot.com address (or use Blogger's “custom domain” feature), you can now redirect your native Blogger feed to your FeedBurner feed (quite easily, might we add). Gone are the muggy, languorous days of wrestling with "autodiscovery" tags in foreboding corners of your Blogger template code or hacking through this tangled discussion thread for a glimpse of configuration clarity. Starting right now, you just log into your Blogger account, select Settings | Site Feed, enter your FeedBurner feed address and click "Save Settings." Zap! Pow! Kraaakkkk! Now you've got the complete picture of how your content is being consumed out here, out there, out everywhere. Wh... More About: Integration , Feedburner , Blogspot , Integra
FreeBurner for Everyone
2007-07-03 17:00:00 One of the many benefits that FeedBurn er publishers will enjoy now that FeedBurner is part of the Google family is a little something we like to call, "more for free!" Beginning today, two of FeedBurner's previously for-pay services, TotalStats and MyBrand, will be free. Not in the sense of soaring high above the clouds or recently sprung from the hoosegow, but free like you'll no longer gladly be billed on Tuesday for a burned feed today. We suspect this will be welcome news to the 450,000+ of you using many of our other free services, but understanding that your feed is your feed, you will need to activate these newly freed-up services in order to partake in their awesomeness. FeedBurner Stats PRO PRO is feed analytics taken to the next level. You will now have access to the number of people who have viewed or clicked individual content items in your feed and “Reach,” which estimates the daily number of subscribers who interacted with your feed content. You can tu... More About: Everyone
FeedBurner Adopts Two-Year-Old, Renames it 'FeedSmith'
2007-05-03 23:47:00 It's official. We've signed adoption papers for the popular WordPress plugin that seamlessly redirects requests for an ordinary feed (from self-hosted WordPress blogs) to your super-powered Feed Burner feed. This plugin — a toddler in age, but a prodigy with HTTP requests — will be made available directly from FeedBurner as "FeedSmith ." It was originally raised by the multi-talented Steve Smith, who's trusting us to ensure its continued well-being. If you aren't already familiar with this handy plugin, you should know it's a reliable way to track your entire feed-reading audience and can even result in that elusive "bump in subscribers" effect when you first activate it. What the plugin accomplishes, in Steve's own words:Using some WordPress plugin magic, and user-agent detection, this plugin simply forwards all your feed traffic to FeedBurner. The plugin will detect all ways to access your feed (e.g. http://www.yoursite.com/feed/ or http://www.yoursite.com/wp-rss2... More About: Feedburner , Rename
What's Up With That? Vol. 2: Clicks
2007-03-08 17:08:00 A publisher wrote in a couple weeks ago and asked, "Your click count and Google Analytics' click count are way off. What 's up with that?" And lo, another "What's up with that?" post was born. Welcome to What's Up With That Volume 2: Clic k s. Publishers who are interested in measuring audience engagement through their feed often turn on our clickthrough tracking service (StandardStats users, click "StandardStats" and check the box marked "Item link clicks"; TotalStats users do the same under "TotalStats"). When this service is enabled, we rewrite the clickthrough link so that the initial click request goes through ours servers; we log the request and then forward the browser on to your site. Publishers with access to advanced web analytics products (Google Analytics, Omniture, to name a few) often have the ability to measure clickthroughs as well, albeit through a different mechanism: these services use the addition of a parameter at the end of the URL - something like www.blog.... Headline Animator Overhaul, Part Three and One-Eighth
2007-03-07 05:47:00 Faithful readers are most likely aware of the minutiae that concern us here at FeedBurner inter-agency headquarters, especially when it comes to new features and notable drama such as "We're running low on decaf and 2% milk. OMG!" Today's enhancement to Head line Anima tor, the FeedBurner service engaged in a renovation comparable to the Dan Ryan expressway reconstruction project (minus the many reflector barrels), is all about expanding the reach of your content and making things look how you want them to look. Place Your Content in More Places, Easily It has been suggested by considerably more than seven of you that we should offer new capabilities to help grow your audience, and that's exactly what we're committed to doing with Headline Animator. It now features step-by-step instructions for placing your content on your MySpace page, a TypePad, Blogger or WordPress.com blog, a bunch of email programs, and "Other," a category we reserve for those interesting places whose name... Headline Animator Overhaul, Part 3
2007-02-27 15:45:00 In this, the third installment of the widget trilogy that is the Head line Anima tor overhaul, we're adding to our publisher engagement metrics by providing additional insight into the world's favorite content promotion tool. For the tens of thousands of you currently using FeedBurner's Headline Animator service, you'll notice a new "Headline Animator Stats" option on your Analyze tab. FeedBurner is reporting "Views," the number of times your Headline Animator was requested and displayed on a web site, in a feed, in email or anywhere else (for example, in a feed via email that you're viewing on a web page). This first step on content promotion metrics points out where people are most frequently seeing your content promotion widget. We have several more pieces of work on the Headline Animator front to finish off and then we're going to start weaving together all of the content measurement pieces we provide into a unified engagement dashboard. SUPER BONUS FEATURE: A helpful s... More About: Over , Part , Part 3
FeedBurner Is Three
2007-02-25 20:20:00 Today is our third birthday and my, how we've grown. Our customer base is 161% bigger than it was this time last year, we've welcomed a bunch of fine new publishers (maybe even you?), and we've won some awards. Today, Feed Burn er turns three and the flame-o-con burns brightly among other fast-growing companies. We strongly feel that we're supporting the best darn collection of publishers on the steam-powered pipes n' tubes of the Internets. So from the whole team, huge thanks to all of you for helping us continue grow up big and strong. While we may be wearing out the knee-patches on our corduroys that much more quickly, we haven't yet outgrown our commitment to provide services that help you engage with your audience. We just hope you can forgive us the once-yearly indulgence of devouring birthday cake with our fingers. But as a wise mentor once told us, merely stating your beliefs isn't always enough; sometimes you really must “speak from the data.” In that ... More About: Feedburner , Three
FeedBurner's View of the Feed Market
2007-02-22 16:00:00 Prompted by widespread buzz from many Feed Burner publishers who blogged about notable increases in feed subscribers over the weekend, we thought now was a good time to step back and talk about media consumption drivers, and how to accurately assess adoption of our increasingly feed-powered Webosphere (we did NOT just say "webosphere"). While it's always encouraging to see feed subscription numbers go up (Google's recent inclusion of subscription data for Google Reader and Google Homepage increased the number of feed subscriptions FeedBurner can report to publishers by 53% alone), these subscription numbers in a vacuum only tell part of the story. Equally important is the extent to which people are reading feeds and interacting with them. In today's post we'll take a look at one aspect of the feed aggregator market - the web-based aggregators - and draw some conclusions about how audiences are consuming content in new and different ways. There are obviously many other feed-readi... More About: Market , Feedburner , View
Google Now Reporting Subscribers
2007-02-16 14:00:00 Starting with our Saturday February 17th subscriber reporting, FeedBurner publishers will be able to see how many Google Reader and Google Personalized Homepage subscribers they have. (Thanks, Google!) This information will show up in tonight's subscriber reports (meaning that most of you will start to see the data on Saturday morning, U.S. Central Time). What does this mean? This is one more data point to help you understand how many people have asked to receive your feed (aka "subscribers"). For those who are interested in the particulars, the number that Google is reporting is the total number of Google users who've subscribed to your feed in Reader or with Personalized Homepage. While the subscriber number reflects overall interest in your content, keep in mind that there are plenty of other metrics within FeedBurner that help you more fully understand distribution and consumption. Now would be a good time to remind you that you can track clickthroughs for each item in your ... More About: Report , Port , Subscribe , Crib
Quick Enhancements to Site Statistics
2007-02-15 18:20:00 A couple quick hits coming this week for the thousands of you (yes, already thousands) using our free StandardStats service to measure traffic to your blog and/or web site. You may now ignore yourself. Not in a selfless, there's-no-"I"-in-"feed" kind of way. No, in the far more vital, omit-your-visits-from-your-stats way. Starting today, you may now exclude your visits to your own site from our StandardStats reporting; just check the "Exclude my own visits" checkbox when setting up site statistics in your FeedBurner account. Visits to your site with browser you are using when you check that box won't count toward any StandardStats site traffic.Witness (outgoing link) history as it happens. Starting in the next day or so, you will see site traffic from outgoing links accumulate over time.Enjoy cleaner pagination on traffic screens. Don't everybody shout "Woohoo! Better paging!" all at once. The recent traffic screens were getting hard to read for folks with lots of traffic; this ... More About: Men , Site , Statistics , Quick , Cement
The Numbers - They Go Down, They Go Up
2007-02-02 03:10:00 The best way to describe feed subscription trends is that they are feisty. Some days your numbers are up, some days (like weekends), they can dip down. This is all normal behavior (read more about why feeds behave the way they do in our TechCrunch case study). But sometimes, other things can happen that result in erratic behavior and we do our best to communicate to you in these instances. In the last couple days, some of you may have noticed a bump in your subscription numbers, and others of you may notice this bump in the coming days. Why, praytell? MyYahoo!, the oh-so-popular web-based feed-reader (hyphen-mania!), is again reporting subscription numbers. Neat. (You can catch up on the full story here). While we celebrate the closing of another forum thread, we hope some of you are pleased to see your subscription numbers on the rise. NOTE: Your subscribers were not lost during this time, they just weren't being reported by us on your Analyze tab. Stay tuned to this blog for ... More About: The N , They , Numb , Numbers , Down
Hackathon Episode IV: A New Hack
2007-01-23 15:20:00 A long time ago (last Thursday) in a galaxy far, far away (Randolph & Clinton in Chicago)… It's time for the latest installment in the FeedBurner Hack athon series. At 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 18, we put "normal" development on hold, gathered together in our new and improved conference room (now with white-boards and a projector!) and figured out our one-day projects. That's the rule for Hackathon: enter the day with an idea, exit the day with a fully-implemented new feature for FeedBurner. "That's impossible! Even for a computer," you say. Well, this ragged band of rebels was up to the task, and we have the following set of hacks to share with you now: 360 FeedFlares, by Paul Baker Xbox Gamertag Flare - This dynamic FeedFlare reports your Xbox Live Gamertag name and gamescore. It also links to your profile on Xbox.com. To activate this FeedFlare, add http://paulbaker.net/fb/gamertag.xml?name =YourGamerTag to your list of FeedFlares. And of course you need to r... AlwaysOn Media 100 Award
2007-01-17 16:30:00 Following Monday's Golden Globes, we hardly had time to get our vintage couture to the cleaners or hurry our borrowed baubles back to Harry Winston before we got word that FeedBurner has won another award to add to our wall of fame (er…window sill of fame, as it were). Today, Always On Media announced that FeedBurner was selected for their annual list of 100 Top Private Companies. This award is presented to companies who are chosen as trailblazers in the online advertising and media distribution industry. We are delighted by the honor, and are pleased to accept the award as part of the AlwaysOn Media NYC event later this month. And while you won't catch him antagonizing the paparazzi on the red carpet, you can see our in-house celebrity and CEO, Dick Costolo, on a panel at the event on January 30, covering how the Internet changes media metrics. (Not to be confused with the session across town about how many outfit changes every star and starlet makes for the after parties ... More About: War , Award , Ward
Headline Animator Overhaul, Part 2
2007-01-10 15:40:00 We are a people who like to provide clues to what we're up to, so when we write "Part 1" in a post title, that is our way of signaling the market that there will be other parts, possibly starting with a Part 2. And lo, here we are with the next phase of the Head line Anima tor Over haul from brushed metal ugly duckling of the widget world to multi-functional, multi-purpose content sharing tool. There were lots of publisher requests for default themes, so we've brought the following new favors to the Animator party: nine, count 'em, nine new Theme variations to bring added variety to how you choose to boost subscription to your content. There are new sizes and styles for advertisers, blogs, podcasts, vlogs/videocasts/v-is-for-victorycasts, and a special little number we like to call the Seasonal Theme. This theme's background will update for you automatically as time moves on, with apologies to our friends in the Southern Hemisphere right now for whom this will certainly make no se... What's Up With That? Vol. 1
2007-01-08 22:19:00 Judging by the grand total of two comments on last month’s Mystic Statistics Heuristics post, we’re guessing that there aren’t any remaining questions about what we do here at FeedBurner to calculate all those media metrics we provide to our publishers. Or, maybe the post was just too darned long and boring and you're all tired of Dick's jokey post titles. We'll assume the latter since we know there's a lot of continuing curiosity about how stats work, how we count, what doesn't count, what does count, etc. This post is the first in a regular series, "What 's Up With That ?", from the Publisher Services Team to transparently describe how FeedBurner works and what we’ve learned about the wonderful world of distributed media measurement. If you have a topic you’d like to see us tackle, send us an e-mail at publishers@feedburner.com, or just post a question on your blog and let us know. In the past couple of weeks, there's been a fair amount of discussion about subsc... More About: Hat
A 360 Degree View of Audience Engagement
2007-01-04 16:08:00 Update: Welcome, Performancing Metrics Users! If you arrived here by way of Nick Wilson's post recommending that current Metrics stats package users give FeedBurner's site statistics a try, we're quite happy to see you. As promised, site statistics are now live. Our architecture conversion work after the BlogBeat acquisition is complete, and our free StandardStats service now enables any of our publishers to track both feed and site audience, all from the comfort of your FeedBurner account. There is a lot to discuss, so this post will cover how to get started, what you get when you activate site statistics, what's coming next, and our vision for how the pieces all fit together. Getting Started If you have already enabled FeedFlare for your site, good news: FeedBurner uses the same JavaScript for both FeedFlare and site stats tracking. All you need to do is go to the Analyze tab and check the "Track metrics for my site" checkbox on your StandardStats service (or TotalStats, our... More About: Audi , Men , View , Gage , Degree
FeedFlare Gets Even More Del.icio.us
2006-12-21 00:31:00 One of the fun things about our Feed Flare service is its ability to reflect dynamic information from some of the most active social media sites on the Web. Want to display how many "Diggs" or related posts at Sphere your post has generated? Check. Want to display the number of Scapes on your posts? Easy. How about showing a "Monkey Alert" if your post contains the word "monkey"? Silly... yet somehow possible. (We've always suspected monkeys to be key drivers of the social media revolution.) Given all the recent fuss about YOU, it's timely for us to announce the latest addition to our extensive line of feed accoutrement: A dynamic FeedFlare named "Save to del.icio.us". This new FeedFlare unit will reflect the number of saves and the top three tags for each item in your post. It looks something like this: We'll let our friends at del.icio.us tell you more about the latest capabilities they're launching today. Also, for the curious, Matt McAlister demonstrates some more intere... More About: Gets , More
